My husband was feeling snackish after an impromptu visit to the Merry Shelley last weekend but wanted something more substantial than their small bites so we came here. We didn't have to drive far to find parking but it might be a longer hike on busier nights. The establishment is bigger than the Merry Shelley and Revolution Gallery (the three have a lot of joint events complete with shuttle service, but we haven't been to one). Plenty of space and seats. My husband tried their in house mango BBQ sauce, but it packed too much of a punch so he went with a burger he really enjoyed. They have a full bar. Our cocktails were great. Service is friendly. Two things to preface this review. 1. I love hot sauce more than the average person. 2. I have been trying to drop a couple pounds in the weeks leading up to my vacation (not the best time, I know). Welp, there goes half my weight loss progress... worth it? Well, considering my career does not depend on how good I look at the beach, I'd say yes. I tried to limit myself, and as successful to some extent, the food as. too irresistible to, well, resist! I ordered the chicken fingers Sophia Loren style. Previously, when I thought of chicken fingers, I though of Chinese takeout, or microwaveable kids' meals. I guess when they called them Best Fingers Ever!" They weren't kidding. When the plate came out, these things were freaking HUGE. They were breaded quite heavily, but at the same time, there was more than enough chicken so as not to offset the balance. Chicken itself was cooked nicely. Then there's the Sophia Loren sauce... this was something different tan anything I had tried. This sauce was garlicky to the point of spiciness, and had some cheesy notes as well. If you are a fan of garlic or bold flavors in general, do not miss out on this! It was also nice trying the different hot sauces. They were good and well differentiated, only I didn't feel compelled to buy any. Not a reflection on the restaurant, more a reflection that I already have probably 20 different bottles at home. If not, I would have definitely bought a box set. I was also able to try one of their cocktails and an Old Fashioned. Drinks were unremarkable, but then again, I wouldn't call this a cocktail destination. Great food, but two instances not good, two visits: 1) Bouncer threatened me not to touch him when leaning in close to ask about unisex bathroom on very loud Halloween event night. I don't like to be touched either, but given the circumstances for proper communication, I wouldn't have made it a threatening big deal. 2) Trying to be inclusive brought my 18 & 24 yo daughters for their food... they would not serve us, even outside with stipulations of no alcohol to be served to either myself or the 24 yo. Wow what a place. Everything homemade, great service, excellent music, solid drinks. Unfortunately they were out of the eggplant wings and The Grain Elevator ($11) was not the best substitute - the fried tomatoes and goat cheese were good, but just not as good as we imagine the eggplant wings were- but that was the only disappointment. The quesadilla and chicken Caesar salad were solid staples. W.C. Fields burger ($12.50) was amazing. Homemade sweet potato fries and onion rings were definitely worth the upcharge. Hand cut chicken fingers with housemade hot sauce was the highlight. Everyone, even the vegetarian, loved them! If you don't do spicy, get the sauce on the side and dip it instead. Worth the flavor even if you only have a little. Everything was delicious and our bill didn't break the bank (even better that the server split our check for us). We will be back! read more

This has been on my list of places to try for a while and I'm glad I was finally able to come. All the anticipation and they did not disappoint. I went with a couple of friends on a Saturday. We wasn't sure what to expect because it was a bar/restaurant, on a Saturday night, with live music. Luckily it wasn't overly packed and we got seated right away. When you walk in, you are entered by a divey bar area with a decent amount of seating and some tabletop seating. There was live music as soon as we entered as well. Though it would have been nice to watch them perform, we opted to grab a table in the back because we knew we would need the space to try all of our food. Lucky for us, we were still able to hear the music because it was really nice. The inside is a decent size with burlesque style art along the walls. The lighting is dim but it goes with the ambiance and you can still see the menu and everything. We also appreciated the fact that despite how cold it was outside, it was nice and warm inside. Now for the food We tried a little of everything. We started with an order of the nacho fries which were fried to perfection and covered with nacho cheese and fresh jalapenos. We had an order of the eggplant wings which you can have fried plain or tossed in sauce. We opted for the sweet mango orange hot sauce which was a great balance if sweet and heat. They came out looking like chicken tenders and tasted soooo good. We got a mama bomb, which is a huge rice ball stuff with either vegetables or meat. They were out of the veggie bombs so we got the meat version which was pulled pork. I wish they had a bit more flavor but it did come with a side of chunky tomato sauce that had a nice flavor. We got an order of the beer battered fried pickles. I love pickles and I love fried pickles. So when she came out with 5 huge spears of fried dill goodness, I was in love. When you bite into it the pickle still had a crunch. You get that fresh dill flavor and then all of a sudden a shock of heat hits your mouth. This was one of my favorites. We also got the say cheese which is their twist on mozzarella sticks because instead they use white cheddar. The batter is was made the cheese sticks stand out to me. After all of this you're probably thinking there's no way they tried anything else. Don't underestimate this trip because we definitely did. ‍ I got the spicy mama burger which was a huge patty with fresh jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, a fresh huge sliced tomato and hot sauce. The flavors came together nicely and the burger was juicy and flavorful. I got a side of sweet potato fries which I can tell were not frozen. They definitely cut up a sweet potato and fried them. It came with a side of honey butter that had an extra surprise to the taste. I won't say what it was, but it was definitely a perfect addition. Another friend got the fish sandwich which was beer battered haddock with all the fixings on a hoagie. As much as it seems like a cool bar go hang out at. This is definitely a place for food. If you haven't been here you are missing out. Their food is reasonably, with nice size portions, and their drinks are cheap. If you usually drink from a straw when going out, do be mindful that they don't have plastic straws. But they do have metal straws that you can purchase for $1.25 and you get to keep it. We love going out of Friday nights to dance at Hot Mama's. They bring in some great bands and there's enough space that we can make do. The food is great. You can tell that things are from scratch that at other places would normally be frozen. The chicken fingers are a great example. They're always crispy - never soggy. And the breading is clearly homemade. The bartenders and servers have always been friendly and the service is fairly prompt. Plus, while your waiting, you can munch in some seasoned popcorn that's got a little kick to it. There are typically old movies going on the TV's so that's either a plus or a distraction depending on your ability to multi-task. And quite often there is live music. Swing Buffalo will bring a whole group of people and go dancing. It's a pretty good setup all around. My only complaint is that the music is often much too loud for me. But I bring ear plugs because live music is usually too loud for me. On the whole, definitely make a trip out to Hot Mama's, preferably on a night when the River Dogs are playing and Swing Buffalo is dancing! read more

This is a cool divey little place hidden in the heart of Buffalo. I came here on a Saturday after going to a museum, and despite the "No Gang Colors" Sign on the door, I braved it in, unsure of what to expect from not being a local. The place looks like just a bar when you first walk in, but there is a dining room, and a small space where live music plays in the back. It was a little chilly inside, but the service was pretty good. Our waitress was very insightful on how to read the menu, and she was attentive. Right away she brought waters, and their house popcorn. A lot of the items on the menu have sweet and savory themes to them. The popcorn was no exception, with a mix of sugar, salt, and pepper. It was good. After looking at the menu for awhile, I ended up getting the Pink Lady Burger. The burger had hard boiled eggs, beets, onions, swiss cheese, and was stuffed with goat cheese. Whoa. I only could handle half of it because I knew I would overdo it, but it was a very interesting burger. There was a lot going on there, and I would probably try something different if I were to go back, but man that burger was very good and filling. It came with fresh cut fries. They offered a cajun or sweet potato fry, but I went with the plain to not have too many flavors going on with the burger. Michael got wings that were sweet, but then a super hot kick would come at the end. They were 10 for $10. The place seems to have a lot of specials on Mondays and Wednesdays. We went to dapper goose for dinner last Friday night with some friends, and they highly recommended stopping by hot mama's canteen for a few drinks afterwards, so we did. This is not a fancy joint, very much a local watering hole type place with a mixed bag of patrons. Most of them were older, with a few 20-something locals. The fanciest beer they had was blue moon, and the fanciest vodka they had was some Russian vodka (no captain Morgan run either). They have live bands every weekend from 8-11pm which was cool - we caught the last half an hour of the performance. The bartenders were friendly and efficient, and at the recommendation of our friends, we ordered a hot mama bomb, which was an arancini (Italian Deep friend rice ball) with a meatball inside. It was good, but I would have liked some red sauce with it. Not sure if that was an option since our friend did the ordering. They also have ones with other ingredients stuffed inside, including vegetarian options. From what we hear, they have all sorts of great pub foods, which we look forward to going back to check out should my lifelong diet ever end. We ended up having a great night, though hubby and I would have never wanted to go there if it wasn't for our friends since it's in an unfamiliar neighborhood that's traditionally known as unsafe. With the gentrification of Buffalo though, that may have changed and will continue to change. Came for lunch on a Saturday and was surprised to see a brunch menu! Ordered the potato cakes, but wasn't impressed. Kinda bland...pretty much deep fried mashed potatoes. Far from the authentic Polish/German style potato pancakes. Husband enjoyed his mas burger with crumbly and creamy bleu cheese. Popcorn and fries are amazing and worth the trip alone! The bar is filled with classic pin up art, the live bands are free to enjoy. The drinks are cleverly named along with the theme of the bar. We went in during Cinco De Mayo. The bartenders where dressed for the occasion and they had a special menu for it. We tried the Pork Quesadilla and Jalapeno Nachos. It was a wonderful spin on the regular menu. We tried the owners in house made hot sauce Head Stone Heat Hot Passion on the Quesadilla and omg it was amazing. They are definately a destination worth seeking. Went there to listen to a band Friday night so we were in no hurry but after a half hour of watching the two servers walk by us, avoiding eye contact each time, I decided to get up and grab two menus myself. We decided what we wanted and put the closed menus on the table. After about another ten minutes I decided to stop one of the servers who finally took our order. The wings were dry and the fish in the fish tacos tasted re-heated, nothing to write home about. It was a whole different atmosphere at the bar where everyone was friendly, smiling and accommodating. Hot Mama's Canteen is the latest addition to the booming lineup of businesses on Amherst Street--and it's a GREAT new addition. Situated on a triangular corner at the intersections of Amherst, Military, and Kail, Hot Mama's occupies a historic triangle-footprint building that has been a local hangout for many, many decades. (As neighborhood retirees wandered in over the course of the evening--mixing with an eclectic crowd of college students, neighborhood activists, and musicians--time after time, they recounted stories of escapades here 50+ years in the past.) The space is beautifully rehabbed--with all of the historic charm left intact and a rockabilly/pinup theme in the decor that perfectly suits the old-meets-new charm of the space. Gentlemen who were regulars of the space in its previous incarnations were particularly excited to see a men's bathroom had been added (apparently, there had been just a closet with an non-operational door before?). The venue stretches out across three rooms. The first is the bar room--well appointed, clean, and inviting. You can belly up to the bar, chat up the other patrons (and the friendly, Vargas-girl attired bartenders) and never even venture back into the other spaces. If you do, however, you'll first encounter a triangle-shaped space where they have live music (an ever-expanding roster of local and even national Americana acts). Open to this space is the final room: a large, bright dining area. During meal hours, this is reserved for those ordering food--but even if you're not eating, head back there to play a round on the 20-foot, antique shuffleboard table. It's a gem! Hot Mama's isn't just a bar, though--it's also a pretty darn good restaurant, serving an upscale mix up pub food with a classic Buffalo twist (like the fried bologna sandwich) and an homage to the owner's Italian heritage (giant, stuffed arancini--which got rave reviews from the diners around me). I opted for a grilled cheese with tomatoes, which was served pressed--hot, melty, crispy, and delicious! I also tried the hand-cut fries, which were very tasty. All told, my meal came in at $6.50. My dining companion went for the gumbo and said it was so good she could have eaten a gallon. A diner at the bar next to us was raving about the catfish po'boy that was one of the specials that night. Each meal is served with a selection of the bar's signature hot sauces--from the "Headstone Heat" line created by the bar's proprietor. This is a Buffalo-made line with flavors like Mango-Orange, Mexican Aftershock, Tequila Lime, and a plum style I didn't catch the name of. Also recommended is their "All American" sauce, ketchup with a serious kick--great on fries! From the moment we walked into Hot Mama's, everyone in my group and the friends who joined us agreed it was a place we could (and will!) hang out a LOT. Don't ask questions, just order the Spam Griller. I went back and forth in my head to decide if I wanted it. I then asked the people I was with if it was a risky decision. I then checked Yelp to see what others said about it but nobody commented. I figured I would take the risk for all of you and I did it. IT WAS DELICIOUS. The Spam Griller is a sandwich with grilled sliced ham, grilled sliced onions, Webers mustard, and white American cheese. It reminded me of the homemade fried bologna sandwiches that my mother would make me as a child. This sandwich could be the next Buffalo classic. It was served with French fries which were good. My friend upgraded her fries to sweet potato fries and I didn't think they were that good. We did order zucchini wings as an appetizer which were a delicious start to our meal. I docked a star because the service was a little slow. The girl who helped us was absolutely wonderful but she also was behind the bar which is out of sight of the dining room. It is a cool urban vibe out front, perfect for a couple of Kenmorons who miss living in the city. Germane (sp?) took great care of us, what a great guy. We had wings and burgers. Terrific! They have a lot of specialties. Hat burner in draft too. They also make their own hot sauces and have some great options for spicy dishes. A great place to meet up with friends! It seems rather small when you walk into the bar but around a corner restaurant space opens up- we stuck to the bar. There's a good variety of beer available draft & bottled. The bartenders: friendly and available. The place wasn't too busy for a Saturday night, which is my kind of jam. Once we smelled the wings the people down the bar had ordered we knew we needed to be apart of that. Their sauce variety is limited but VERY flavorful and so....good. Spicy, too! First off, I have never written a Yelp Review and I've never been so disappointed that I had to! This past Saturday at 5:36 pm I ordered 2 sandwiches- the Sophia Loren and the Big Daddy's Cuban. I was told the food would take 25 minutes, I got there 5 minutes earlier, told them I was early so no worries, and I was offered a water while I waited. I wasn't drinking alcohol because I had to be to work at 6:30. First off, the food took until 6:19 to be ready, almost 45 minutes- when these 2 sandwiches couldn't possibly take more than 10 minutes to make. Also, There were only 2 customers, Myself and another customer who was Only drinking. Hmmm??! What took so long? I can't explain it. There were 3 people working in the kitchen, and another 3 at and around the bar, that's at least 6 employees. Not one of them double checked this order! Even though they were terribly late, I work in the service industry, so I still left a $3 tip. I check part of the order while I'm there there to make sure my Parmesan sauce was on the side of my Sophia Loren sandwich and that there was mayo on the sandwich, I didn't see any mayo, so I asked for a side. Waited another minute or so for my mayo, and At this point I have 8 minutes to get to work. As soon as I get to work, I pull out the boxes of food to split with my coworker and I notice something else is wrong! I check out the BIG DADDY Cuban sandwich, this sandwich looked terrible, there was nothing to it, and definitely did NOT live up to its name. On the entire sandwich there was 4 extra thin slices of salami, two thin pieces of ham, a piece of cheese, and their sauce just in the middle- not even spread across the bread completely. What else was wrong you ask?... there was NO pulled pork on the sandwich! Now anyone who has ever in life ordered a Cuban sandwich knows that the pulled pork is the Staple, the Glue, the Best part of this sandwich. Immediately I call... they couldn't hear me, asked me to wait so they could get the manager. The manager comes to the phone, a woman, she also cannot hear me well because there is a band playing. I'm wondering why she couldn't leave the room to hear me better. But apparently they don't care too much about their customers. So, finally she understands me well enough to hear that my pulled pork is missing from my sandwich, and that i was just there. The only person who had ordered food for that 45 minutes while i waited!! She asked me if I could bring the sandwich back for another. I explained that i was at work already and was unable to come back there. Let's not forget i was already 5 minutes late for work because they were late making this horrible sandwich. I said I wanted a Credit for the sandwich and that I would come back another day. She replied that she would see what she could do and asked me for my phone number. My phone number was already given to them on my order, so she actually had the number still there in the bar. I would also like to add that these sandwiches come with French fries, my fries were warm when i got them! not hot!! So everything about this order was wrong! And i didn't complain about the mayo missing or the fries that had been sitting. Well, it's been 2 days and still NO CALL! Now a few months back, something similar had happened, and they forgot the bacon on my Sophia Loren, i called that time as well. They also asked me to come back to get bacon--- hahaahhaaa!! I thought that was hilarious,let's just say I didn't drive back for bacon. Although bacon is sooooo good. Nor did I ask for a credit that first time they messed up. This is twice! Twice my order was messed up, twice I called, twice nothing was done about it. Therefore, never again will I spend my money Nor support this business. If a staff of 6 people cannot figure out how to correctly execute two very simple sandwiches, then maybe their incompetence shouldn't be rewarded with business. read more

Ohhh how I'd love to give a better review! We decided to try this place because of all the yelpers who raved about the food but it was pretty disappointing. The only saving grace was the very friendly staff. We tried the (veggie) Mama Bomb as an appetizer and that is exactly what we got, a bomb. The presentation was great but the flavor fell flat. My boyfriend ordered the Asian fusion wings... you would think with all the effort they put into the description of their "unique" sauces that they would be amazing! Yeah, no. They were aa bland as could be and should have been cooked for another few minutes. I ordered the Black Rock Brew burger, which our waitress raved about and instead I ended up getting a hog burger instead. Our waitress, Shanna was very nice about it & got it replaced immediately. The popcorn they gave us before our good arrived was very good. They even filled it after we ate our wings. The wing were perfectly hooded. Nice and crispy on the out side. Not dry on the inside. Fun neighborhood bar with shuffle board table and live music on some nights. Street parking only. This place gets extra points from me for knowing that a Cuba Libre is a Rum an Coke, have a shuffle board table and live 80's cover band the last time I was there. I know they have food but I've only had their Arangini, I think they call it Hot Mama Ball. It's one huge Arangini with the option of vegetable or meat. It was ok. It was fun to try it with all of their hot sauces. They have like 5 of those. They have a good section of beers, Honey Brown on tap, and a full bar. I'll check them out again on Friday in hopes they bring back that 80's cover band. read more

Wow! I'm in love! The theme is heat but the vibe is so chill. Creative cuisine, great live music and the delightful Cat McCarthy behind the bar makes Hot Mama's Canteen a new on my favorites list. The menu pairs each item with recommended hot sauces from Buffalo's own Headstone Heat, a collection of five different hot sauces sure to satisfy everyone. I tried all of them but the Sweet Mango Orange. The Mexican Aftershock is certainty spicy but deliciously flavored. The Hot Passion Sauce has a sweeter and tart flavor but still with a good kick. For something milder, the All American is a thicker sauce flavored with garlic and onion with a consistency more like ketchup. I think I'd like this one best with fries or on a burger. But hands down, my ultimate favorite was definitely the Tequila Lime. Try them all but don't miss that last one. I will probably buy some for home on my next visit. I started with the Mama's Bombs. The daily special was a smaller sampling of both the vegetarian and carnivorous version. Both were fantastic although I preferred the one with pork. I was torn on my dinner decision because so much on the menu sounded tempting but ultimately I went with the grilled cheese. Now, a little bit about my history with cheese: When I was three years old, I was babysat by an aunt and uncle who forced me to eat a cheese sandwich - that would be a slice of American cheese between two white pieces of bread. (I gagged as I wrote that.) And there began my hatred for cheese. As a teenager, one of my friends coaxed me into trying her bacon cheeseburger and I started to open up. But still today, I view cheese as a compliment; something to be melted on or mixed into another dish. I certainty don't eat cheese sandwiches be they cold or grilled. But this grilled cheese combined Smoked Gouda and white cheddar with tomato, and Gouda is my favorite cheese. It was truly amazing. I don't normally like grilled cheese but gave this one a shot because of the Gouda. I was far from disappointed and savored each and every last bite. If this place were closer to home, I'd be in trouble! read more
