I had just had the oil changed at grease monkey and DeKalb, and by mechanic diagnosed the engine as having seized meaning there is no more oil in my vehicle after they complete the oil change. Needless to say I could never prove that. So now I'm in need of a new vehicle and I called around to several of local dealerships now that I've moved back to Illinois. I went to visit Alan Browne Chevrolet. My husband had been trying to help me from long-distance and connected me with Keith. Keith knew that I was disappointed with what happened with my Chevy and gave me the patience and answered all of my questions as I test drove a couple of their brand new equinox that were on the lot. I was sold! The sales team is excellent. When I went to negotiate the cost, I don't feel that there was a lot of heavy up selling trying to occur. I didn't know that I wanted to bring my vehicle back here for service that I always have one point of service and there'd be no doubt the vehicle had been cared for!!

I'm a regular customer at Merlin. I used to get all my oil changes and car issues checked there…read more But every time I went, they'd hand me a huge list of repairs. For example, when my tail light was out, they charged me $35 just for installation--something I later learned to do myself in about two minutes. Then, I heard a sound from my tire, and they said it'd cost $600. When I hesitated, they warned me it was risky to drive, so I agreed. Later, I had an oil change--they charged me $80 for synthetic oil, which should last 6,000 miles. But at 2,500 miles, my engine oil light came on. I checked, and there was no oil. I had to get it redone elsewhere. Next, I had a catalytic converter issue. Merlin charged me $300 for installation after I bought the part myself. Later, I smelled smoke from my A/C vent. They told me it would go away after some miles, but it didn't. My engine light stayed on, and after about 7,000 miles, the car wouldn't accelerate. They said it was the catalytic converter again--$1,500. I had no choice, so I paid. They had already charged me $99 for the diagnostic. One week later, I heard another noise from the tire. I asked them to check, but they wanted another diagnostic fee. I reminded them I had just done one, but they insisted it was separate. I paid $99 again. Then they said it was the tire bearings--$600. I was suspicious, so I took my car elsewhere. Turns out it wasn't the bearings; it was brake pads. I've realized they exaggerate issues to charge more. I've wasted $3,000 in two years. If I'd gone to another mechanic first, I'd have avoided all this. I've seen other reviews saying the same. I don't recommend Merlin. If you have car issues, go somewhere else.

I had two seasoned mechanics (not from this area so no competition) look at the bill and the narrative on the bill and BOTH mechanics gave me the same exact opinion and quote and said we were overcharged by $900...we went in and tried to discuss this with the owner and were told that they are a "top notch shop" unlike others and that they knew they had a budget of $2000 and that they told my son up front...my son said that he did tell them he had $2000 but the last time he spoke with the shop the bill was 1,500 and he thought they would be replacing glow plugs....this didn't get done and when he picked it up the bill was $2,000...I asked why he didn't receive a estimate in advance and he said they can't do one because things could come up to impact the estimate... Either way...labor is outrageous and we will not be using this shop again...

I've used Bill White's C.A.R. Hospital several times this summer. My car is fun to drive, but at 15 years old, it always needs something. My greatest concern is an unanticipated breakdown, and that's exactly what happened the first time I visited the C.A.R. Hospital. Usually, there's a clear view from the shop area to the waiting area/service desk--where I anxiously crane my neck to see where my car sits in the line of work. Usually, the waiting area is cramped and unclean, a place for stale coffee and man-picked TV. Usually, I find myself on the receiving end of vague terms with hens-and-haws, until I prove my cursory understanding of a fuel combustion engine and the ABS system. Here's what it's like at Bill White's: complementary beverages if you need to wait; free local pick-up and drop-off when requested; always friendly and polite service counter assistance by Rachel, Joy, and Bill; absolutely clear communication about diagnosis of problem and solution to problem, clear communication about the reasonable price of service or repair, and clear communication about exactly when work will be completed; lastly, there's a thank you card or coupon in the mail--real savings, not just some stupid systems-check, on something a car really needs.
