Denied printing a quote for me at the store when i requested a price comparison, received from 2 different shops being told that was the issue with the vehicle. I had bought tires and batteries from Steve at a different company before and was so happy with his customer service and overall demeanor that I followed him over to Top Notch. He remembers you and your car, and he made recommendations on the best winter tires with a quote at $100 less than another shop down the road (which I did not disclose before getting the quote, so they weren't trying to undercut). I had brought a previous car here for a problem I can't recall and so has my husband, no issues with the work needing us to revisit or have trouble with their job done. We are long-time customers who brought our "new to us" vehicle in for an inspection. After that, it was one issue after another. The day after we picked up the car from the inspection and some work that was needed, we completely lost the brakes in the car. We were told by many sources that if the car had been put up on a lift incorrectly, that the brake lines would be crushed. Had the car towed back, then we explained the situation. We feel that we are fair people and explained that if the mechanic made a mistake, we would gladly split the difference of the cost to fix the car. We understand that mistakes happen. We were told that the mechanic definitely did not make a mistake, and that we needed 4 lines replaced (2 brake lines, a fuel line and the other line in the same area). Cost to fix: $780. SHOP CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS SEVERLY DECLINED OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS: 1. Each and every time our vehicles have been in the shop, we await a call to let us know what is going on. Each time we call for information we get the same spiel from the customer service desk... "I was just going to call you..." - it's hard to believe that since we are the ones who always have to follow up. 2. During the last repair, early in the morning we called and asked that the owner, Owen, call us to discuss the broken brake lines. That call finally came through at almost 4 PM, which was after the next issue that I am going to list (see #3). 3. Upon my arrival at the shop to pay for the work done on our vehicle, I walk in and Jim is bad-mouthing my husband to Owen. I stood in the lobby and continued to listen to the conversation without being greeted or assisted. Finally, I said to Jim - you do realize that you are talking about my husband. His response: was something to the tune of: your husband is accusing us of breaking something on the car and we did not. I explained that regardless, it is poor customer service to discuss another customer in such a manner when you have other customers in the lobby. At the end of the day, we paid the $780 to get the car fixed. THEN, two days later, while bringing the car downstate to our child at college, we noticed a strong gasoline smell. We brought the car to another mechanic, who upon looking at the car, showed us that the new gas line that was installed did not have a clamp. Apparently the $780 that we had already shelled out didn't include a clamp. MORAL OF THE STORY is that we will no longer be customers of this establishment. There have been far too many errors from the mechanic team and they have horrible customer service. If I could, I would leave ZERO STARS. read more

I was faced with a truck repair dilemma this week and my regular "go to guy" of close to 30 years suddenly vanished. Being a business owner and down time is money I panicked. Calling around I received estimated repair dates from 3-5 days? What! Called Top Notch and spoke with Steve. He immediately started asking questions concerning my repair, something these other shops didn't, and started explaining causes and ways of addressing the problem. He was even ordering parts while we were talking so they would have them in case other things arose. VERY NEXT MORNING in and out within 2 1/2 hours. Replacement of alternator and complete truck inspection. Really! WOW! Met with Owen and other mechanics to discuss other mechanical factions of my business and they re-assured me that any issues or repairs could be addressed accordingly. Around October 2014, I had an optispark go bad on my built 383 1995 Camaro Z28 & took it in to Owens for a repair. About a month after getting this repair I was driving to work, my power steering cut off & I heard something steel bouncing under my car & actually its my crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer sliding down the street. A bolt holding the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft backed out & the loose pulley damaged the crankshaft over time. I bring it back to Top Notch & they tell me there's no way they could've been responsible. The operation for a couple things I actually had done by them includes messing with this crankshaft pulley. What Top Notch thinks is the shop that built my motor back in 2011 was actually responsible so it took 3 years for this bolt to come loose. So anyways they basically tell me my motor is destroyed & then offered to buy it from me oddly. I had a certified GM mechanic look it over & he said it wouldn't have taken 3 years for that bolt to back out more actually he thinks it was messed with either when someone did that optispark repair wrong & actually loosened that bolt holding the pulley on & didn't torque it back down or when I had a throwout baring go bad & replaced just a week after getting this optispark replaced. The clutch kit was installed back in May by Top Notch & failed due to a throwout baring in that kit going bad & this is around 1,650 miles after it was installed. I asked a transmission expert about this & never has he heard of a throwout baring going out that quick on its own without it being installed wrong. Top Notch paid for this part oddly under "shop warranty" not to be confused with a manufacturer warranty but not the labor. I also asked to see the throwout baring that was bad & they never let me see it. I called the shop that built my motor back in 2011 about ($15k into the motor alone) & they specialize in motors specifically racecar motors that's basically all they do never have they had a problem like this in their 45 years of business. Had other things done by these guys like an exhaust, had some subframe connectors welded in, & some exhaust manifold gaskets replaced, nothing really to do with the motor. After this incident I wouldn't trust them with my cars ever again. When I have 5 different mechanics 2 of them certified GM mechanics telling me Top Notch had to be responsible what can I think? Owen seems like a cool guy but I question if these guys really know what they're doing I asked & none of them went to any schools for this stuff its all self taught, this was probably that one time, second time including that clutch kit, they messed up maybe more who knows there's only a few reviews on here. Didn't really like how they joked around about doing donuts in the parking lot with my car (tire marks everywhere so they're not trying to hide that) & oddly enough telling me my car is fast really how would you know that unless you took it out & went crazy with it. If you're looking for a mechanic for repairs or modifying I say look somewhere else there's better more reliable options out there all I know is as soon as Top Notch started touching this car there's been nothing but problems. read more

I have been bringing my Ford Mustang into Top Notch Auto for 9 years, recommending this business to all my family, friends, and co-workers because of their great service and honesty. Over the past year, things have changed drastically. Last March, I brought my car in for an oil change and to have them check my heater and AC which was not blowing hot or cold air. After having my car for 8 hours, I was given around 14 pages of things "wrong" with my car, but they never looked into my heating/AC issues. When I reminded them, they said that they forgot and I would need to bring it back next week. Bringing my car in weekly is definitely not convenient. Two weeks ago, I brought it in again for an oil change and to have them diagnose my heater/AC issues. Again they said they completed the oil change, but needed more time to fix the heater/ac and would need to order parts. Again I was told to bring it in next week. They verbally quoted me around $100-$300 depending on how long the labor took. They said the oil was changed, but again I had no windshield wiper fluid which I had asked them to be sure and fill. When I brought it back the 3rd time, they kept my car ALL day, but now quoted me $2,651.45, but would need to order parts and complete the repair another day. I could not afford the repair and told them I would pick my car up. Again I asked them please fill the windshield wiper solution that they failed to do last time. When I picked up my car, they told me it had been refilled which it was not. The man working in the office came out and we lifted the hood. He pointed to the empty chamber saying that it had some fluid in there which it clearly did not. As he removed leaves from under the hood, he somehow pulled out the tube leading to the wipers so any remaining fluid dripped on the ground. Then he claimed it was a leak and pulled it back into the garage. If there were leaves under the hood which he had to clean out, it makes me wonder if they ever even lifted the hood. The man did fix the wiper and finally filled it with wiper fluid. Today, I went to another service station where they diagnosed the issue in less than half an hour and fixed my heating/AC for $161. This is a HUGE discrepancy from Top Notch's almost $2,700 quote for the exact same repair. I am really shocked and saddened by the way I was treated as well as Top Notch's apparent dishonesty. read more

Owen and team know cars & engines (and from what I saw, trucks as well). I was quoted by a facility in Algonquin (Algonquin Auto Clinic) that my air conditioner ('97 Cadillac STS) was leaking at the compressor and would require $648 to repair. They had run a leak test (they said) and subsequently wanted to replace the compressor, clutch, orifice tube, and drier/accumulator. A friend recommended I get a competitive quote at Top Notch Auto, which is where I met Owen. He was surprised after running his own tests that showed I was simply low on coolant. While I waited, he recharged the system and ran his own leak test with indicative dye. NO LEAKS! That was back in May, and my air conditioner has been running great for six months. Total cost $63, less than one tenth of my original quote. I will take my car nowhere else. read more

Unbelievable and knowledgeable service! We had been having an ongoing problem with my mother's Chevy, Impala for well over a year. The car would die without rhyme or reason. We took the car to several repair shops, Midas, Firestone and finally the Chevy Dealer, all of whom would replace the battery, check the alternator, say there was nothing wrong with the car and yet the car would run for about a month after the repairs and new batteries and then die again. The car was towed twice to the Chevy Dealer while it was dead (per their request), and yet they still couldn't figure out the problem. Frustrated and several batteries and hundreds of dollars later, my brother looked up repair shops in our area and came across Owen at Top Notch Auto. He was so nice and told us to bring the car by and he'd check it out for us and see if he could figure it out. Well, it took him a couple of days and he called us and told us what was wrong with the car. It was the Body Control Module. So for a year and a half neither Midas, Firestone of The actual Chevy Dealer (who should know everything about Chevys) could figure out what it took Owen 2 days to figure out. Unfortunately Owen did not have the equipment he needed to fix the car himself, but he spoke with a different dealer and told them we would be coming and told them what was wrong with the car and we were able to get the car fixed. It is going on one year now and the car is working as it once did. It is a great car. The most awesome detail, Owen did not charge us a dime for his diagnosis (who does that now a days)? He said, he just wished he would have been able to fix it for us. Since then my brother goes to Top Notch, I go to Top Notch and my mom will never go anywhere else, neither will my brother nor I.
