I have moved with Gentle Giant twice in 2025. My moving crew this past time was Dex and Jimmy. They helped me move a dish cabinet, two night stands, and my Sleep Number bed across the street. When we got to the new location, I had planned to move my 50 gallon fish tank with a friend later in the day but they offered to help with that too! The temperature the day of the move was 100+, but they were persistent, fast, courteous, and very professional. I specifically contacted this company for help with the more delicate items I had to move and they absolutely delivered. In addition to the movers being top notch, the communication with the business representatives before, during, and after the move were stellar. Given the level of service, you get with this company I would say that the price is fair. These are not discount movers, but you certainly get what you pay for in terms of quality. read more

I heard a lot of good things about Gentle Giant but was ultimately disappointed due to a new bookcase being broken during the move and some packing issues. I had two guys assigned to me and one of them was excellent, but the other could have been better and caused some stress for me. He ended up absent-mindedly putting broken glass in one of my moving boxes thinking it was trash, which was annoying and potentially dangerous. The top section of the bookcase completely broke off, and it was impossible to fix since it had shattered. I was told that it was a cheaper bookshelf not meant to withstand moving and was reimbursed $50, but ultimately this didn't help me feel much better as I had to get rid of my bookshelf in the end. read more

The move appeared to go well and the movers were very good...however during the move a glass coffee table top was shattered and 4 irreplaceable plates out of 6 were broken along with another plate. The move was a short ten minute drive from my old place....so I was surprised by the damage. During the last move, amid the coronavirus pandemic (moving companies are considered essential), we spent only a minute--before and after--near the movers to give directions and OK the total. Be prepared to begin paying when the movers leave their warehouse and end when they arrive back, adding some costs. Would recommend packing your own items, or as many as you can, because the packing itself is time consuming and the packing materials, which are generally not cheap in the store, are even more when you buy them from a moving company. I LOVE GENTLE GIANT!!!!!! We downsized from a big townhouse to a much smaller one, and to make things more challenging, we have a bunch of antiques - including a floor-to-ceiling armoir that gives movers heartburn - and probably had double the number of boxes I'd predicted. Their estimate was 5-7 hours. I was figuring on at least 7, since our previous movers had taken a full 10 hours. They wrapped up at 5 hours on the dot - never took a break, not even when I brought them subs for lunch (they ate on the road after finishing our job). They were fast, seamless, athletic, and very very careful with everything they did. Our crew was Gabriel Samu, Robertas Tulko, Valentas Zelvys and Edmundas Ratkevicius, and they couldn't have been more professional or helpful. One guy offered to help clean up a glass I dropped on the floor, another tried to help me subjugate a wardrobe box without me even asking. They even helped pack up the stray odds and ends around the house, wrapping everything up so it was safe and secure. They were clearly used to working together - I'm pretty sure they were reading each others' minds as they wrangled huge and heavy pieces down the stairs - it was like a choreographed dance. About halfway through, the crew chief gave me a heads up the final cost might be higher, because of the volume of all our stuff. The move itself went smoothly until I realized my rug never made it to my new apartment. A big reason I went with them over others is because of their 100% satisfaction guarantee. I figured if there were any issues it would be an easy fix. I've talked to 3 people, one on the phone and two over email with no resolution. Everyone I've talked to has taken the attitude of "are you sure it's not behind boxes? or somewhere you haven't looked?" Do you think I didn't look around extensively and check my old apartment before calling you? Do you think this is fun for me to be disbelieved and have you all drag your feet in fixing this? Highly recommend. Used for an in-town move. I have been involved in several personal moves in my lifetime and have been responsible for major company and office moves. Never have I experienced a crew like this! Friendly, cheerful, quick, efficient, polite, courteous, focused, and a strong work ethic like I have never seen in a moving company! Moving day was no different! The guys were great! Fast, orderly. When they were unloading at our new house, our neighbors were so impressed that they wished they had known about Gentle Giant! The crew was unbelievable! The crew we had "get it". Not only do they know how to pack and load, they seem to understand that a move is not only stressful, but it is emotional as well. Leaving behind memories and daily contact with good neighbors, moving to mostly an unknown. I've moved about 30 times in my life and hired movers about 10 of those times, hired packers about 5 times. They definitely were very professional over the phone and was on time and professional. They did a great job packing but too well - they packed as if I was moving overseas over military airplanes or something. Wrapped everything multiple times then padded every box (e.g. I had ~50 mini shot bottles and they packed them individually multiple times). The end result was that I paid them like $350 to pack up books, booz, and a small bit of junk. I could have packed the same amount by myself during that time. I should have caught them and told them to hurry the hell up but I was working at the time and did not notice. I knew something was off since all I ever heard for the 2.5 hrs of them packing was the sound of the packing tape. They used up a bunch of them, all packing material, then I had to buy more from their truck. Unpacking was a huge hassle undoing their overly meticulous packing and getting rid of the packing material was a pain. But then they were professional, nice, and didn't steal anything even tho I was in another room working. I would probably use them again only if I were under time pressure and couldn't get other place. I should have just offered ppl $30/hr on craigslist to pack up stuff. If you are in the military and looking to move to Iraq or something, use these guys to pack. You'll lose no china even if they dropped your boxes midair. read more

First time hiring movers. Pretty glad we did! Went off yelp reviews and when I saw 4 stars I didn't bother calling or inquiring anywhere else. Gentle Giant really lives up to the name. They're a great moving company that is truthfully gentle with all your things! I filled out their online home inventory questionnaire then called their Lorton office. After about 5 minutes of talking about minor details regarding the move, they gave me a quote and estimated time for move completion. I put down a $200 deposit over the phone and was told that since moving sometimes has its random unforseen circumstances, I could call even the day before to reschedule the move. I found that very professional and flexible on their part! Come moving day, 3 guys arrived on time and even called beforehand to tell me they were coming. They quickly had me walk with them through our home to get an idea of what to move, where to move it to, and any specifics we wanted to mention. I showed them what boxes were fragile and what to be very careful with and they said "don't worry we are careful with everything" So basically, I wasted time labeling boxes as fragile haha! Then the guys got to work, finishing about 3 hours later. They told me that they would then drive to our new house and grab lunch quickly on the road (off the clock they said). Great! Once they left, we gathered some final odds and ends and headed to out. Suffice it to say, Mike, Mike, and Milch (sp?) beat us to it and were waiting curbside for our arrival. They did not call us to rush us or anything but were waiting patiently in their truck cab. I asked if they could throw something down to protect our hardwood floors, and they obliged. They rolled out a long carpet of sorts and then got to work. They finished on time and always asked us where we wanted things to be put. They even helped deconstruct and reconstruct furniture that was bulky--asking us where in the room we wanted it placed and in what orientation. Once everything was complete, we signed a few papers, they gave us the total charges (33% less than estimated), and then were on their way. Great company. Good quality work. Efficient. Honest. Good values. From support staff to the actual movers, the way this company does everything in its power to make you feel at home and comfortable with your move. There was never any doubt about "if they break something, or is anything missing" All in all, an experience like this made us wonder why we even bothered to move ourselves ever. I recently moved from Baltimore to DC. Every interaction, from initial contact to the move itself, was professional, courteous, and thorough. Although my movers, Armin and Ian, got lost on their way to my apartment in Baltimore (-1 star for not Google Mapping that...), once they got in the door, they got my 1 bedroom, 1000 sqft apartment out the door in about an hour. They use these huge bins to load your stuff, which make the job go much faster. They sprint (it's their gimmick, but still cool), between the loading dock and the loading elevator. On the drive to DC, I was expecting to arrive a solid hour before they did. They beat us here. There is no gamesmanship, no slowing down to increase the cost, nothing. They're honest, and, as someone who has moved around a lot as a kid, that's a rare quality in a moving company. Although there were some hiccups with the loading docks at both ends (their truck was bigger than normal) which increased the time, the actual time spent moving belongings was swift. I have moved twice in the past 9 months. For the first move I used Allied Movers and was thoroughly dissatisfied with their services. As a result of Allied's inability to move my couch into my (then) apartment, I googled moving companies who could help move my couch into my apartment. That's when I found Gentle Giant. They were quick, friendly and able to do the job. So when I needed movers for my second move, I went with Gentle Giant again, and could not have been more happy. The coordination of the move over the phone was very thorough. My move coordinator called me the week of to confirm the details of my move (which were all accruate), and then the crew chief called me the day before my move to ensure I was all set. They showed up on-time, with an extra guy! As someone who was paying by the hour, I was thrilled that they had another set of hands (and legs) to help. They were very fast to move everything out of our 1000 sq ft apartment which was packed to the gills and hoist our couch out of the 3rd story balcony. When they arrived at our new house, they were literally running out of the house to keep the process moving (again, very nice when you're paying by the hour). They also did many of the little things that I didn't see with Allied. They put down floor covering so as not to get our carpets dirty or scratch our hardwood. They asked me if I had a bedskirt for our bed so as we didn't have to pick up the mattress when we unpacked. They put felt on the bottoms of our table and chairs so they wouldn't scratch the hardwood floors! I have to say, Kiefer, Gabe, Ion, and Drue were awesome, friendly movers who did the job right and quickly (though carefully!) I would recommend them to anyone. read more

These guys got the job done! I just needed some labor help moving things from a storage unit into a moving truck; I drove the truck across the country myself. Setting up an appointment with Gentle Giant was very easy - it seemed like all the other moving companies in DC were booked for the period of time I wanted to move, so I was stoked when Gentle Giant replied they could handle my job. The two people who were sent out - a young lady and a man - worked carefully. I asked them to use my ratchet straps to secure the truck's cargo bay, but they insisted on using their own (I was never told why my straps were inferior, though I used them to secure a 200+lb couch for this move without issue), then charged me for their strap. That said, the strap held up well as I traveled 2,800 miles over the next 7 days! The truck packing job they did was something to marvel at for sure, as absolutely nothing shifted in transit and nothing was damaged. I knocked off a star because they parked their truck in an alleyway that cars constantly drive through. The security guard of a nearby bank had to come out to tell them to move after the bank manager asked me whose truck it was; the guard told us the police had been called since they had been sitting there so long. The movers' truck could have easily been pulled into a wide perpendicular street in the same alleyway (Paloma Way near 14th and U in DC), but the movers wouldn't move it after I, the bank manager and the guard asked them to. I wasn't thrilled at the movers' response, but they soon wrapped up the job anyway. They also charged for 2.75 hours of labor even though the 2 movers from another company who, 2 months prior, originally removed all my stuff from my apartment, loaded it in a truck, drove it to the storage place and loaded it in there did it in 2 hours. There are some things Gentle Giant can improve. read more

Complete NIGHTMARE!!! Gentle Giant was scheduled to arrive between 12 and 4 pm to move us out of our DC condo. We waited patiently until about 2:30 when I called just to see where we were in the line up at that point. First I got VM. 10 minutes later they called back to say "Oh we sent you an email earlier today...we had to cancel. Two of our crew tested positive for Covid. Sorry" They sent me an EMAIL...at 1:30 pm! I'm moving...not sitting around checking my email. They had no contingency plan, no offer to call allied movers to see if anyone could pinch hit for them. They just sad "sorry and we also can't fit you in for tomorrow either." We were left high and dry and we are in our 60s! Thank goodness for our amazing realtor who rented a U Haul truck, drove it over and along with her husband and our son-in-law, we pulled it off. DO NOT USE GENTLE GIANT movers!!! read more

I kept reading all the 5 star reviews and things but I didn't see the big deal. Their quote was high but I needed to book movers pretty short notice so I went with them. Two movers showed up which is what I was quoted for, but then a third came to help. I had only one other experience with another moving company so that's how I am comparing. When I moved about 6-7 years ago I used a company and 2 men who were really muscular strong came to move. They quickly moved everything, carrying 36 boxes on their back with these straps they used so it would make it faster. I was very impressed with that move -- moved a 3 bedroom apartment in like a couple hours. The 3 bedroom apartment at the time was for me and my roommate so there were boxes of clothes and each other personal items and furniture. Gentle Giant did not have 2 strong muscular men, but two men and a woman. They were nice and got the job done but were kinda slow. That ate up the time which I have to pay for. I only moved 1 bedroom amount of stuff and actually did not have clothes packed. My lease started on a Saturday but I couldn't get that date so I started moving some of stuff on my own from my car (clothes and small boxes). So Gentle Giant did not even move ALL my stuff. They were handling just a living room set (light weight not big) and a dresser and a bookshelf. I was getting a new bed, so no bed. Then some boxes with kitchen items and various things. They took FOREVER. I paid top dollar to have them move. They didn't have a strap to use to carry 3-6 boxes at a time just carried them like anyone would. I think if the movers I used 6-7 years ago did it then I would have paid less and gotten it done in less time. It's not like I move that often though so how many times am I really gonna hire movers. read more

I come from a background in customer service and know how important it is to be courteous over the phone with prospective clients. My situation is urgent, so I have to be out of the apartment I was living this weekend, I called them to ask if they had any availability for this weekend, and after she checked and came back to the line she said that she was booked ( I was expecting this answer on such short notice) and wished me good luck with my move before I could finish a sentence. I am pretty sure that companies like this have a tight network and can refer other companies if a customer asks, which I was going to do, but this girl would not even let me get a word in. They make you fill out a ridiculously over detailed standard form and then wait another week to even provide you an estimate. Good luck trying to get them on the phone too. I don't know what the costs would have been, but the estimate was substantially higher than similar companies (and I contacted a lot of such companies). For wonderful customer service and reasonable prices, I recommend Great Scott Moving. I spoke with Henry there and he couldn't not have been nicer or made the process easier. My wife and I hired Gentle Giant for a recent move from Capitol Hill to Clarendon. They were able to fit us into their schedule on short notice. I really can't say enough about how great these guys were. Full of energy, quick, and trustworthy. We had a very large armoire that needed to go up an angled staircase and they tried every approach and finally got it up there with no damage to walls or the piece. Any other moving company I have had would have just given up and said "It will have to stay downstairs." Several times we offered them drinks or food but they refused to stop and rest until the work was done. If you want to deal with real professionals who treat your stuff as if it was their own and hustle to get the job done, use Gentle Giant. read more

The actual move with GG was fine -- no serious complaints about the physical moving of my apartment's things, which I packed myself. However, what the booking agent described as "about $15 for materials," which he indicated would be tape, turned out to be nearly $100 of charges for items that I was unaware I was "renting" from them (like the big movers' bins, which, had I been given the option to decline, probably would have rented because they save so much time (= money)). At best, this is nickel and diming your customers; at worst, it's an unethical business practice. (They also charged $6 each for wardrobe boxes, which -- unlike with the bins -- they told me once they started to unpack my closet; I accepted, but you better believe I jammed as many clothes in those things as possible.) Although they were on time practically to the minute and were very courteous, the three movers that showed up seemed quite young -- which I wouldn't remark upon, except that it might explain why they seemed to rush rather than take care to wrap furniture before moving it from its original place, particularly unwieldy items like bed rails. The job took an hour longer than I planned -- which I don't blame them for because I have a lot more stuff than you might think would fit into a 1BR -- but I really had to insist to the booking agent that 3, not 2, people would be required (having moved many, many times), and that it would take more than the 3-4 hours they suggested. However, it still felt like sticker shock when the bill indicated 6 hours because of the gratuitous one hour "travel time" that every company seems to add, PLUS the nearly $100 in "materials" that I didn't realize I'd used. Ultimately, the bill was about $200 more than I had expected, which was a bummer. Bottom line, I would not use them again, because of the unexpected "materials" charge. I have used movers at least half a dozen times and know that it always costs more than you plan, but they really could have been more clear about the true cost once you factored in travel time and materials. read more

We used Gentle Giant in July to unload a truck that we had had packed elsewhere and then driven to DC. The Gentle Giant movers were quite late getting to our apartment building--almost an hour late. We only had reserved the elevator for two hours. When we told the movers they had a deadline, they literally RAN our furniture, etc. up to our apartment, and got everything done within our tight time frame despite being late. Moving sucks. There's no two ways about it. Having had experiences with both decent and not-so-decent moving companies, I must say that Gentle Giant is the best out there! We did a last minute move from DC to NYC, and they were incredibly accommodating to our needs. The moving staff were incredibly friendly, and even in the midst of moving our stuff up and down a 3 floor walk-up in the rain, they maintained great attitudes and a sense of humor. On delivery day, they kept the lines of communication open so I knew exactly when to expect them. They handled our belongings with the utmost care- not a single item damaged.
