Great Scott moved me from Washington, DC to Baltimore with a month's storage in between, so two moves actually in the spring of 2019. Up and down a lot of stairs in Washington, and they did it all with ease and friendliness. Definitely made me feel secure. Unfortunately circumstances arising out of covid shut down necessitated a move from Baltimore. I didn't even think of contacting another moving company. Two of the gentlemen who did the first move, Earl and Ambrosio, along with Warren were so kind and careful and helpful with this last move, and I am very grateful. Scott accommodated a request to change the original date to one a few days later. As with others would I would HIGHLY recommend Great Scott Moving Company to any and all. I can not tell you how great these services were. We were getting floors redone and had to move a ton of stuff from our main level to the basement and then back again a few weeks later. I contacted multiple movers and most involved extensive picture taking and filling out long forms to get a quote. I called Scott and he gave me an hourly quote and that was it. I was a bit worried about not having more "official" in place but he came through with flying colors. Very steam lined. Very reliable. I got a quote for my move from an apartment to a house about 45 minutes away, it seemed a bit high at first, but I'm glad they estimated high because it ended up taking less hours than the estimate. The two men that showed up were professional, efficient, and wrapped all my furniture quickly and well and ensured nothing got damaged during the long drive, not to mention were very careful not to scuff up any walls. I had Great Scott Moving come in to help me for a move last Friday and decided to go with them because of their reasonable quote and recommendation from a larger, trusted moving company. I FaceTimed with Scott to walk through my furniture and boxes to get a quote. I made sure to clearly state the long walk from my apartment to the elevator, mentioned a heavy table I had, and a staircase in my new place. He sent me a quote clearly stating 4 hours for 2 men and a total of $650. I double checked as I had been quoted by other companies 3 men, but this was my first time hiring movers and Scott seemed sure that the estimate was correct. The day of my move, two men came to move my 1 bedroom apartment and I came to realize it was taking much longer than the quote had initially indicated. At this point, my items were loaded into the truck and there was nothing I could do but continue with the process. At the end of my move, the movers didn't have an Allen key to separate my 300 lb table and wanted to try carry it upstairs without separating. I knew this was going to be a risk with such a valued item of mine and rightly so, these men were exhausted as the job was larger than it should have been for the two of them. I would have expected them to have an Allen key but ultimately asked them to leave it downstairs to mitigate any risk of ruining it. The movers were great and diligent, but the truth was Scott was dishonest with his estimate - an approach often used to get the sale. At the end of the move I was charged $1,100 - nearly double what I was quoted. While the two men who moved me were diligent and efficient, I cannot recommend this company based on the wildly dishonest quote and Scott's customer service. I called Scott after my move to discuss this with him and felt instantly bombarded. He told me his men have more experience than other movers and so 2 of his men are the equivalent of 3. He told me most movers don't wrap up items and protect them but his did. And he told me when you have 3 men there is always just one standing around so it's the same as having two of his men. I was so taken back by his response I felt like I had no option but to just simply end the phone call. It's a shame this was the outcome because the movers did a good job, but I cannot recommend this company and will not be using them again for this reason. read more

The process was incredibly good from start to finish from getting a quote and making all the arrangements to the movers showing up right on time to the great care they showed with all of my parents stuff including disassembly and reassembly of various bits of furniture. Moving out of their long term home has been very stressful for my folks and the easiest part of the whole process was the actual movers and the actual move. Loved our recent experience with Great Scott Moving. I was a little skeptical that we needed two trucks but Scott assured me that he had assessed everything we had--and he was spot on. Crew got caught in traffic on the way over, so ran a bit late, but hit the ground running. I had to twist their arms into taking some coffee and donuts. They worked like a well-oiled machine. The two lead movers were personable and answered all my questions as they arose throughout the day. When we arrived, they were up front that the sofa would be a very tight fit up the stairs and they couldn't promise it would go. They even considered the 2nd floor windows (too small). When it came time, they told me before they started that they could give it a go if I was ok with scuffs on the walls. I appreciated being consulted before they started. I don't know what magic they worked, but they got it up with minimal scuffing and no dents to sofa or walls. I was a bit anxious that we didn't have a written contract, other than an email exchange, but they arrived on the day and the charges were as quoted. When there was something I didn't understand on the bill the next day, I received a patient explanation from Scott--who answered the phone personally whenever I called. I can't emphasize enough how much I love this company. We used them 7 years ago moving from a 1 bedroom apartment to a 4 bedroom single-family home, and we were so pleased at how accommodating they were (even stopping by a store we purchased new furniture at to pick it up on the way). So now, moving again to a 5 bedroom home (including emptying 2 storage units), we knew we wanted Great Scott Moving. From the very start we knew we were in good hands, when the organizer on the phone looked through listings of our house online to see layout and furniture to decide on how many people and trucks they would need. On the day of the move, the crew worked like a machine... *all* day. I was exhausted just watching them. And they went above and beyond disassembling furniture, wrapping up pieces, and ensuring nothing got damaged. Plus, the chemistry between the crew members was quite refreshing and they work together so well. This is incredibly important with so much communication having to go on, from logistics of where and how to move things in a coordinated effort, to the tactics of cornering awkward couches around support posts. Let me just open with a word of thanks to Jonathan H. for bringing this AMAZING company to my attention. If ever there was a time for Yelp to come through, it was now. I called Great Scott after finding out I needed to move ASAP. Scott himself answered the phone and he was totally cool. He didn't try to pressure sale me into anything and we quickly arranged to do a move at 9am on Monday morning. A few days later I realized that some changes would need to be made so I called back and spoke with Henry. I needed the movers to come to my storage unit in Falls Church, then proceed to my condo in Virginia Square then to the new location in Crystal City. I also had a time variable. We only had the elevators reserved at the final location from 1-5pm. Henry quickly added up his estimates and said he would have the movers come at 10am to ensure we arrived by the end location at the appropriate time. Let me tell you, his calculations were SPOT ON. The two man moving team arrived promptly at 9:55am. They were beyond courteous and moved my storage items out ASAP. All of my items were securely packed up in the truck and the boxes that weren't well taped up were given an extra tape padding by the movers. When the movers arrived at the Virginia Square location, they assessed all the items quickly and began moving. NOT ONCE during the move did they slam a large item against the wall. NOT ONE DING OR SCRATCH on the wall or any of my things. After they finished up there, they proceeded to the final location but mentioned they would take a quick break to get some water and a short lunch (Henry mentioned this when I spoke with him). Indeed it was a short lunch because they arrived exactly at 1pm for the unload. Mover #1 stayed and unloaded the truck and mover #2 brought the items up in the elevator into the condo. There was no loading dock here but they still moved fast to get all of my items up. They placed the boxes/furniture in the appropriate locations and just as they had before, did not put one scratch or ding into the walls or furniture. I mean, I could not believe how carefully, yet quickly, they maneuvered my things through the condo hallways. Amazing. If anything, just the fact they didn't ruin our walls was enough to make me be true to them forever. I would recommend Great Scott Moving to anyone to cares about their things and expects true professionalism from a move. If you factor in time and truck rental (not to mention they're insured!) the price is so right. Moving is stressful enough; let these guys take the stress out of it. There are tons upon tons of review about how courteous, careful, hard-working, and reasonably-priced Great Scott Movers are. Yet, I chose them because the guy who answered the phone when I called for an estimate had a super hot accent. I literally was making up additional questions to ask him just to stay on the phone for another 45 seconds. I'm going to guess he was Australian, but it doesn't even matter. Based on my now totally arbitrary selection criteria, it's probably a miracle that I selected such an awesome company for my hoist/move. I had a couple of very expensive new items delivered that did not come close to fitting up the stairs in my house, so I found myself tasked with hiring "hoisters" to get the super heavy items from the main level to the 3rd story roof deck/sunroom, and then down a level to the 2nd floor. GSM sent three moving superheroes to complete this mission. When they were finished, the politely suggested I sell the items with the house if I ever end up leaving this place. It was that hard. It's also the first day I think we've hit 100 degrees this summer in DC. Fun fact: autocorrect turns "hoisters" into "jousters" each time I type it. I'd put my money on Alex, Eric & Avi in a jousting match as well. They were good-spirited, super polite, very efficient yet extremely careful movers. And shakers. Just kidding; can you tell this move has caused me to go insane? They were scheduled to come at 3, but called me at 11:30 to say they could be here closer to noon since I had booked "ASAP". After they were done wrapping, hoisting, unwrapping, and staging my difficult pieces they even let me extend the service, (because they were way more awesome than I anticipated), and we made a run from my old place to the new place with a truck full of furniture. I had intended to move the other furniture myself, with my guy, but after such a good experience with GSM I was willing to pay to have it done faster and better by professionals. Especially considering the fact that I added a move to the hoist I'd scheduled, the price was extremely reasonable. I've used movers before and only had horror stories...now I won't hesitate to use GSM or to recommend them to others. The move on August 12 was beyond flawless, it was a "moving experience" (no pun intended). In preparation for renovation work in my home, I needed everything moved from the upper and first floor to my basement for temporary storage. I reached out to Great Scott about a week in advance, providing an inventory of what needed to be moved. Tom responded promptly with a quote that was hundreds less than two other movers and was able to confirm date/arrival time. The movers, Alex, Josh and Jean Claude arrived on time, were extremely professional and efficient. They completed the job in just 2 1/2 hours, but I had no issue paying the four hour minimum. It was truly worth it. The way they carefully packed 2 floors of furniture into a small portion of my basement was amazing. They raised the bar from a profession to an art form. Great Scott is fantastic. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Last week they performed a multi-location move in under 4 hours (from a storage facility and a house, into a storage cube for cross-country shipment), and were completely professional, punctual and honest to a fault. Just to give you an idea, the estimate that they gave me for the move was very conservative (6-8 hours, depending on how much repacking needed to be done because the stuff in the storage unit had been sloppily packed in the initial instance). In addition, the customer service in the main office is terrific -- my contact, Henry, patiently and quickly replied to all of my ticky-tacky planning e-mails and phone calls prior to the move. Not sure whether my stuff will have any dings or issues on the other end of the shipment, but I figure it's a natural selection situation -- "survival of the fittest" furniture, electronics, etc. This was by far the easiest, worry-free move that I've made. A wonderful experience at a stressful time! Long distance move from MD to N.C. the crew was friendly and very professional. They moved fast and barely took a break ensuring every box was ready to go and packing up the entire kitchen and odds and ends. Henry at Great Scott was easy to work with to coordinate my full pack up move. On day one, the packers arrived on time, with tons of packing materials, and lovingly, thoroughly packed my one bedroom home, asking about delicate or special items along the way. On moving day, again, the movers showed up on time, and ready to dig in with speed, care, professionalism, and courtesy. When they couldn't get my boxspring out of the front door of my basement apartment, they went over-and-above by offering to come back another day to move it through the back door. I moved a 1BR apartment last week, and in general, had a favorable experience. They were basically on time, and they were friendly, moved everything quickly, and with a decent amount of care. One slight ding is that a drawer on my small dresser broke, although it's a cheaper Ikea-style particle board drawer, so perhaps that would've happened eventually anyway. The other more major ding was when they told me my queen-sized box spring wasn't going to make it up the stairs. I trusted their opinion, since they are pros and have much more experience than me. Their suggestion was to saw the box spring in half (so it could give/bend and get up the stairs) and re-brace it after, which I understood and was fine with. When I came down to finalize things/pay, my box spring was just face down on the ground outside. Without any effort, they just said the box spring wasn't going to fit, and they left it on the ground. After a few minutes of discussion, my older landlord (likely in his 60s) and I decided to take it up the stairs to get it inside, and we were able to make it all the way up with only some slight elbow grease. So.. thanks for the effort, guys. My experience wasn't terrible, but personally, I likely will not be using them in the future. read more

Five stars for a super fast and easy move with friendly movers who did things so fast that I paid LESS than what the company originally quoted me! The guys were really nice. My move was small, but we moved stuff from storage in Maryland all the way across town to Capital Hill South, and unloaded, in 2 hours. There was no time wasting. At the end, they sat down with me, counted out the hours and tagged on no extra fees--just charged me the hourly rate ($130 for two guys) that was quoted when I called the first time. The only fee beyond the hourly rate was for travel time to and from my place, and that fee had been disclosed up front on the phone with my estimate. They moved my stuff so fast that it was cheaper than the estimate (no guarantees that this will happen to you, but they weren't slacking is all I'm saying). It's a higher hourly rate than several other places in the area but SO worth it for a smooth move with no hidden fees and nice people. (Also, someone always answers the phone in their office so if you have questions, etc., they will be there). I have had the WORST moving experiences previous to this--watch out for the cheapo movers who will try to charge you extra on arrival and threaten to take your stuff if you don't pay in cash before they unload! Nothing like that at Great Scott-- great price, great service, HIGHLY recommended. read more

nikhil does not seem to remember what happened the day they moved. i simply suggested that they lock the elevator out, as everyone does in our building when moving. when i spoke with the concierge in our building that day about people moving and not locking the elevator out, the concierge stated that nikhil told her that they knew how to do it. therefore, the elevator was not broken. I also do not appreciate being harrassed by someone's movers in the hallway of my building, when they have failed to utilize the proper procedures for moving out of our building. my dog did not bite anyone and to have someone assume i have a dog for racial reasons obviously does not know me, nor the kind of profession i am in. if you are self-important, and claim to know everything about people you have never met, definitely have this company move you. they will be more than happy to use inappropriate language to degrade any of your soon to be old neighbors they come in contact with! read more

I've lived in several 1 bedroom apts in the DC metro area, and I've moved every year or two, upgrading apts, location, etc. Some bad experiences with moving companies have led me to trust my moves to friends and family most of the time, but I gave it another try with Great Scott. Amazing! I would normally hesitate to give anything a perfect score, but it is impossible for me to think of a way my moving experience could have been better. This includes getting the estimate, them calling me to confirm, and offering to come early when they finished up their morning move. These guys were fast too, I've had other movers take their time or kind of loiter around if they didn't have direction, because hey, it's hourly, right? With 3 movers and no help, they were done in 4hrs including a 1hr commute. My previous movers had 2 guys with help from my boyfriend, brother, dad, and myself and it took 9 (that's right, 9) with a 15 minute commute. And it wasn't that they weren't careful too--these guys could fully pad and wrap my furniture in the blink of an eye and they wrapped everything that wasn't boxed. I didn't have a single scratched or broken item (can't say the same for previous movers). The guys were so nice too. I highly recommend this moving company. I will be using them again. read more

While my move did go pretty smooth, I cannot say that I had quite the pristine experience other yelpers here seemed to have. First off, some things were just beyond their (and my) control - such as the weather, how DC metro drives in such weather, and the unpredictable traffic patterns. However, they stuck with just their 30 min travel time and didn't add on for time after they got to me. One star The rain left everything outside a slick, muddy mess...but the guys hustled quick and hustled hard. Another star HOWEVER, and this is where I'm a bit ticked...they didn't lay down ANYTHING on the floor nor the carpet. so after the move i had a muddly mess all over the hardwood floors and all over my carpet. This was a place that i was converting to a rental property so I had to had everything professionally cleaned.... the muddy mess ended up costing me extra. I've moved many, many times...and this is the first time where they didn't lay anything down on the ground to protect the flooring or at least attempt to by putting cardboard boxes down...nada. So that's one star docked off. Now, at my apt they did make the effort to clean off their shoes, put down a cloth and managed not to track up the brand new carpet. So that's a half star They also were nice enough to put a write up in my documentation about the loading dock mishap at my apt, which did add on to the fees. The apt complex took a copy of the form and said they'll refund me the difference. Another half star added. Overall, I will say that they did give me a decent move at a more than fair price. I moved from a 2 bedroom condo to a 1 bedroom apt - both within in the DC metro area - for under $600. read more

They charge by the hour, but unlike some of the other local companies, only have a 2 hour minimum (and then charge in 1/4 hour increments after that), making them perfect if you only have a small move, like I did. We just moved this past Friday to a new place and decided to use this company. They were wonderful! They came into the house, looked at everything we wanted to move, and got to moving. Every time they had a question about something (a piece of furniture or a box), they would come ask us if we would take it or if they should. They packed up all of our stuff in about 45 minutes, and when we got to our new place, they checked out the layout and 45 minutes later everything was inside. They are very fast and very nice to work with. There's a two hour minimum and they charge $130/hour, plus travel time, but it is worth every penny. We didn't have to lift a thing and they took care of everything. If we move again, we will definitely be using this company again! read more

4.5 stars My last move was with Great Scott -- they were very efficient and moved like they were working on their own dollar, instead of mine. The movers literally ran back and forth to the truck and carried as much as humanely possible with each load. They finished before their estimated time -- and prior to my expectations as well. I did notice a few minor dings on my stuff -- to be expected I guess, but that's the only reason for 4.5 instead of 5 stars. I have used them for years from different rental houses in DC and for my business, and several friends have used them from my recommendation so I am basing this on at least eight moves, I wish I could post this review eight times.
