BUYER BEWARE!!!! If you get the wrong product you will not get your money returned. You will order a nice topsoil and instead receive Decomposed Granite and sand, and you will be stuck with it. Use a credit card so you can file a claim with them and get your money returned! I called Geo Growers to deliver 24 yards, 2 truck loads, of topsoil to use for new sod and garden beds. I asked for 1 step above chocolate loam, which they were out of, so it was suggested to get a step above that. I had previously used a landscapers mix delivered from Whittlesey which I was happy with, but I needed it fast and they were delayed a few days on delivery. I received 12 yards of what turned out to be Decomposed Granite (DG) and another product that felt like sand. I called and spoke with Jason at GeoGrowers who said that he was embarrassed that I had gotten the wrong order and he did not recommend what I had delivered for new sod. He said it was commonly used for sewer yards because the water drains quickly since it is mostly sand. The product felt like sand, was silky and heavy like sand, but dark colored. I had my landscaper return all of the product to GeoGrowers after speaking to George the owner. George said he would return my money and the delivery fee I paid to the driver. He tried to talk me into keeping all of the product, and said both products were basically the same, and are excellent for growing things due to the ground up granite/minerals. You can see in the photo that the 2 products are not the same and are not even the same color. George offered to give me 12 yards of the DG at no cost. If you have ever had DG it is a nightmare to get rid of. It stains everything orange and has little rocks in it, and it was not what I wanted. It took my guy 3 RT trips using a large, flat bed truck and several hours to load it all. My guy said that George paid him for the delivery, but then George decided to not return ANY of my money because it was "short on product." I paid $1,182.09 and $278 for delivery to the independent delivery driver. I filed a claim with my credit card company and a complain with the Better Business Bureau. I have 2 people to testify that the product was loaded and delivered back to him. What's more, I lost some of my good topsoil because the dump landed on my side yard. I regret not waiting and using Whittlesey. read more

Rude people all around... ordered for a jobsite and was told delivery would be that day. They showed up the next day with half my product. After many calls, I was told the rest of my order would be delivered... it was another day later, and when they delivered they didn't call me upon arrival or en route as per their phones had lost power.... so instead of finding a point of contact, they dump the product at the front of the Ranch's gate. Totally botched my order and ended up delivering less than I needed. The dispatcher was sick the day my order was scheduled to go out and I'm guessing something was lost in translation when the fill-in person prepared the order. I called and explained we were short two yards of magic mulch. No follow-up by Geo. No call. No reach out to explain what happened. Just silence after I complained that I still needed two yards of miracle mulch. Later that day delivered one yard of mulch, and the delivery driver gave no explanation why there was one yard and not two. I'm still short one yard of mulch at $102. read more

Worst garden soil. I have been gardening for years and years. I mean over 20 years. Grandparents owned a farm. I have used soil from all around and this soil by far was the worst choice. I'm talking about their Thunder Garden. It is fluffy and has no mass to it. I have multiple garden beds and used different garden soil in each to see which one was the best. This soil was horrible. It did not retain water. I had to water twice as much as other garden soils. Plants struggled. I moved some plants over to a different garden bed with different soil and they took off. I purchased a small amount of Thunder Garden and sent it off to get tested to see the nutrient makeup. It came back poor. The worst part is I purchased 6 yards of this for my garden thinking that it was good quality garden soil. I had to amend it twice over the last two years for it to actually grow anything. Heard about this place from a neighbor, drove over to see if they can help me with my yard. The disgruntled woman behind the counter this Sat was one who really didn't want to help me at all. I told her I was there because my lawn was suffering and I needed help. She sat there like a bump on a log without engaging me with helpful questions to diagnos the issue. I told her that I am getting brown spots and dead areas even though I am watering every other day.. her smart as response was "well it's out out there, 103 degress". Then she proceeds to ask what is the lawn sitting on, Me: dirt, her: well out here it's different, Me: ok, but I don't even understand your question, it's not like I'm putting a new lawn on my driveway. Her: ok. That was it, OK, no follow up no nothing, your the expert lady help me out She was unhelpful, seemed annoyed I was there and it makes sense that on a Sat around noon there was nobody at this business because then I drove over to Natural Gardner, where it was packed, and got all the answers I needed by them really trying to find out what was wrong by asking in depth questions. read more

Was just in there today. It was my first time and I usually dread soil yards for the overly surly and macho vibe they can sometimes have. That was not the case here. I'd always heard geo growers products were great and staff are friendly. So far that has proven true. Dan helped me choose a product an then cheerfully loaded it into my truck. Between the Go Local card and the Yelp deal ($10 for $20 Certificate, which is still available as I write), Geo Growers has been the absolute cheapest place to get dirt for my flower beds and garden. Get the Double Thunder mix if you're going to mix it in with existing soil that is lacking in drainability (is that a word?) and nutrients. The folks working there are super-helpful and knowledgeable. They even let me grab some okra and basil from their garden on the way out. It's a short drive to the south side of town, but totally worth it for the friendly service and excellent products the big box nurseries just don't offer. read more

I have waited a long time to update this review because I really wanted to give them a chance to fix things, but that's clearly not going to happen now. I bought several yards of Thunder Garden 2 years ago and had a great experience. I ordered another 3 yards this year for some new raised beds and had it delivered in late February. Long story short, there is herbicide present in the new soil. This probably means it has manure in it that came from animals grazing on pasture where a broadleaf herbicide was sprayed. These things happen. I could go into detail about all the folks I consulted and tests I did to be certain of the problem and the culprit, but the bottom line is the soil has big problems. It deformed and stunted or killed a ton of my transplants, and left me not knowing when, if ever, it would be safe to eat veggies from these new beds. Once I was certain of the problem, I called Geo Growers several times and left messages. I sent several emails through their website. I heard nothing for 4 weeks. Finally the owner called me, said they take these sort of concerns really seriously, and that he wanted to come out to look at my plants and make sure it wasn't some type of disease. He said he would come by later that day. He never showed up or called me again. That was 10 days ago. I wasted a lot of money and time and labor on soil that cannot be safely used for its intended purpose. The soil problem was disappointing by iteself, but the real reason they have lost my future business is because they care so little about customer service. read more

I live near Geo Growers and thought I'd stop by to see what they have for my yard and garden. They have good natural remedies to problems and great soil! They will deliver it to your house if you live fairly close and will bring as little as 1 yard. They have a large variety of soil, and things like crushed granite. They also have some small plants, and raised bed products and supplies. If you ever go, make sure you talk to George. He's extremely knowledgeable and helpful. read more

Even though this heat wave has taken a toll on the garden the herbs and veggies are doing really well. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. The dog's love it too! We had a great experience at this place. It was recommended to us by Tillery Street Plant Co, who get their dirt there. We got 25 (5 gal) bags of Thunder Garder for a raised garden bed. Although it took a while to shovel all of that and load it into the car, it was an unbeatable deal. They also take 10% off all dirt with Go Local. I also got a few started plant there, and they are all doing really well and looking mighty healthy. They were pretty reasonably priced to start with, but they also had a buy 3 get 1 free deal on all starter plants, and gave me a gallon of compost tea for free! The whole experience was just really nice and I feel like these people really know what they are doing. It is totally worth the drive to the outskirts of town to get soil for our garden. read more

Good service and selection, but their Fairland pink gravel is nearly $5/bag, pretty sure I could quarry it myself and have it be cheaper. I've been using various soil mixes from Geo Growers for over a decade and they never disappoint. The service is always superb; prompt and courteous. Today was a great example; George called me back himself to discuss the dirt I had ordered to be sure it was the best for its intended use. I purchased three cubic yards of their Thunder Garden Blend this Spring for my organic garden. I drove all the way from New Braunfels because their soil was highly recommended by a friend. A couple months later it became evident that their was something very wrong with their soil. I came to find out that the soil I had purchased was contaminated with a herbicide. When I brought this to their attention, they advised me that the manure from their supplier had been contaminated with the poison. They refused to take responsibility, and blamed it on their supplier. I have yet to receive a refund for the contaminated soil they sold me. I purchased soil from their closest competitor. It was cheaper and the quality was 100% better. Please do your research before you buy from this establishment. Don't make the mistake I made. read more

Why buy Dirt? Well why would anyone think of making dirt a business model? I don't know but I'm glad that they did. If you are serious about your garden or lawn then you need to start with good soil. There is none better than this place. Way better than the bagged stuff you get at the big box home improvement places and cheaper. Catch them on their 2 for 1 weekends and it becomes "DIRT" cheap (sorry..could not let that go!). You basically buy soil by the 5 gallon bucket (you bag yourself and save). After reading previous reviews I went into the store a little bit apprehensive after all some of the previous reviews weren't glowing reviews. So what did I find at Geo Growers? I found two very informative and helpful young ladies at the front desk. They explained everything in detail and were apologetic that the product I wanted wasn't available and told me when they expected more of the product would be available. As I was walking back to my truck curiosity got the best of me so I decided to look around to see what else they had to offer. While looking around I was greeted by this scary looking dude and I thought oh damn, I'm in the wrong area. Anyhow long story short the dude was so helpful. I told him what I was there for and relayed they were out so I'm gonna make the drive another day. He told me to hold on and during his absence determined he could take some product from a customer that wasn't coming in for a few more hrs and refill his order during that timeframe. While we were talking I discovered that he was an Army Ranger and a father. Just goes to show you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. This guy went above and beyond to help me get the proper product for the job and did it with a smile. I was so impressed with Geo that I've already sent three people there way. This place has awesome dirt and nice people. The prices are good, and they accept the Golocal card, which gets you 10% off of anything they sell! The lady who helped us at the counter showed us around and was very friendly and sweet. We talked as I admired the pet chickens running around (bout 5 grown and 4 younger chicks). She had lots of useful information and the whole place was full of interesting gardens and gee-gaws. We bought Thunderdirt to lay our sod over, and that stuff is golden. read more

They were nice, but we were disappointed with the dirt. We thought it (thunder garden) would be more organic matter, instead, it just looks like sand and small pebbles. I didn't think anything would grow in it but tried it anyway because we had already gotten it and I really don't know that much about dirt. Well, our plants are having a hard time growing this year compared to last. I know it could just be a bad year, but really, looking at the dirt, I just don't see how anything could grow in it. I tried supplementing with manure and fish emulsion after the fact, but it's just lacking... really disappointed since I heard such good reviews. It's good for growing cactus though. I have used three companies in Austin for soil for new raised vegetable gardens. Thunder Garden is the best soil I have ever used, and it retains its loft for many years without significant amendment. In fact, the soil I bought last year from another vendor is inferior to the Thunder Garden in my three-year-old beds. On top of that, Geo Grower's customer service and gardening advice is excellent. I really love this place, its the place for soils. George really knows what he is doing. I'm in the gardening business and I use them fairly often. Buying good soil is a wise investment for your plants. They also have a very nice selection of organic products for your garden. The staff is nice but a bit quarky, but I'm not there to chit-chat. Do make sure you take a look at the soil they are loading, to make sure you are getting the right product, you don't want to go home with a different mix than what you really needed. Never has happened to me, but I can see it happening on a busy day. read more

I live in SW Austin, and I have Celebration Bermuda grass. After spreading turf topper last weekend, my grass looks amazing. This product consists of sand, gypsum, and turkey compost in a fine particle material so it was very easy to spread out. I also love working with George and his staff as they are all very knowledgeable about their products and landscape management. We ordered 21 cubic yards of pea gravel last weekend. All aspects of the interaction were great - Cheerful delivery and great product. We called Friday and had delivery Saturday. We ordered Thunder Garden and French drain rocks from Geo for delivery to Dripping Springs. Their folks are very communicative and kept us up to date on delivery. The soil is wonderful. i am not scientest, so cannot comment on the quality of the dirt/compost or whatever. but all five people i consider local experts say GG is "the" place to get goood compost - even the main guy who hosts garden radio show and public TV gardening show. they were prompt the few times we had it delivered (years ago,) and they were helpful when i drove pickup to pick up a bunch of loads to start a new garden (yes, each one of my tomatoes, cucumbers and onion cost me on average $6 each, but that is separate conversation :) ) Their pricing seems to be exactly average (for bulk soil) read more

I fully agree with the reviewers who gave awful reviews. The place used to be one of my favorites and the owner George has been kind and courteous. Nowadays they have a suboptimal staff. They did not only execute the order but a disgruntled lady tried to put the blame on me and the person who took the order because she had been out due to health reasons. I conmiserated with her and asked her to please remedy it. She kept on giving me a terrible time. I asked then to talk to George. I did. Since the order process and delivery became a hassle, we agreed to cancel it. On March 22, they billed my card 478.47. On March 27 they refunded only 366.97. No explanation and no response to this date. I will dispute and persevere on my complaint. I feel so disappointed. I feel sorry for George. Caveat emptor! read more

Great company!!! Only bought a quarter cubic yard but they were nice enough to charge bulk rate and as it was a slow time of day helped me and my lil gal bag and load. Bought a gorgeous Black Beauty to transplant and will be sowing my seedlings over the next week. Staff helpful, friendly very knowlegeable and patient with me and my three year old.
