    Rare species, BoxCat

Love this place! They have a great selection, including the rare species of domesticated box cat. Pro tip: grab a popsicle or ginger soda out of the cooler inside to enjoy while you walk around on those hot days.

The Natural Gardener is my favorite plant nursery. The people working here are plant experts and definitely know their stuff. In the past they have provided me important gardening tips and recommended specific plants that would work best for my yard. They have a wide range of plants, bushes, roses, and trees best suited for the Austin climate. All the plants looked healthy and vibrant. I was here to get a bag of perennial ryegrass but did walk around. They had poinsettias and rosemary shaped like miniature Christmas trees for the holiday season. They also sell a huge variety of bags of compost, dirt, and other ingredients for your landscaping. There was also walking trails on their property showcasing how to design your property with a vegetable garden, native plants, fruit trees and a vineyard. There was also animals too where I saw chickens, Biscuit the goat, and dinosaurs (sculptures). They used to have a donkey but not sure where he went. It the best place to find native plants and gardening supplies.

I really enjoy shopping at this nursery. It is a 40-minute drive, so I don't get to go as often as I like, but anytime I'm needing more variety than the smaller local nurseries offer, I make the trek out to TNG. The employees are all very kind, and most have a pretty good knowledge of plants. Most importantly, if they don't know the answer to a question, they know who does and they will find them for you! The new General Manager, David, is amazing! He's always out on the floor, interacting with customers. If you can catch him not tied up in a conversation, you will hit the jackpot with someone who is a wealth of knowledge! Last, but not least, I only recently discovered they have a labyrinth, butterfly garden, goats, and chickens! You really could spend hours out there and not get bored! ETA: I don't know how I forgot to add this, but this place is very dog friendly! I'm not talking "dog tolerant," as most nurseries are. I'm talking staff that will stop what they are doing to engage with your dog, pet them, give them treats. They LOVE dogs here!

A small section of the butterfly garden

My visit here raised the bar on what a nursery could offer. I started in the butterfly garden - this wasn't a place where plants were offered up for sale. Instead, it was a beautifully landscaped garden showcasing plants that support butterflies. A friendly employee enthusiastically volunteered information about the properties of different plants, which caterpillars they supported, and how they interacted with the plants (in some cases, eating them down to the ground, but that's ok because they regrow quickly and caterpillars need them). I altered my plans for part of my garden based on this information. There are also other show gardens, a chicken pen, and an attractive goat. The plants for sale are laid out in helpful sections and they are well-labelled (no issues with bringing home the wrong plants or unlabelled ones). Inside, there is a good variety of high quality gardening tools and hoses for sale as well as bird-feeders and seed. I was considering buying a hose attachment that would have been the opposite of what I wanted. Another employee, helped me find the perfect product. The location is a journey from downtown Austin but so worth the travel time.

This place is amazing, and what a beautiful job they have done with laying out the place! So many healthy plants, and so much expertise too in some of the workers. You can tell that they take pride in what they do, which you just don't get at the big box places. The plants I got here were SO MUCH healthier than the ones I've gotten at Lowe's, and you know what else? The plants are actually cheaper here than at Lowe's. They also have some really cool plant that I've never seen before (e.g. the shrimp plant and the string of dolphins that I have posted pictures of) Yes, there is a long line due to everyone deciding to take up gardening during the pandemic. Their sign at the gate said 30 mins and yes it was accurate. So just plan accordingly. I literally just put my car in "park" and listened to a podcast and had some "me" time, no biggie. You're going to get plants, don't get stressed about it.

    April loves it here!

Very minimal and overpriced selection of old, basic Texas yard plants and a dusty little succulent and houseplant tent. We stumbled onto Barton Springs Nursery almost by accident after seeing their showroom on Lamar and…read morerealizing there was an actual nursery a little farther west. Somehow I had never heard of it, despite it having been around for decades. I was not prepared. This is less a traditional nursery and more a beautifully designed place that happens to sell plants. The property is shaded by huge mature oaks, with gravel paths winding through incredibly healthy plants, weathered wood structures, limestone, pottery, little seating areas, a greenhouse, ponds, and thoughtfully placed pockets where you can just sit. Everything feels considered without feeling precious. I kept trying to describe the aesthetic and eventually realized the most accurate reference point is the Animal Crossing island I always intended to create but absolutely never did. It is genuinely one of the most beautiful retail environments I've experienced in Austin. We were only stopping in between errands with our five-year-old and 11-month-old, so we barely scratched the surface and didn't actually purchase anything. Even so, several staff members took time with us. Everyone we encountered was warm, knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely happy to talk about plants and the property. The Genus Bar is particularly cool. It isn't just clever branding. You can bring actual plant problems to their horticultural experts for help, and they have equipment on hand to dig into what may be happening with a plant. One gentleman walked us through the space, explained some of what they do there, gave us some history of the nursery, and was completely open to whatever plant questions I wanted to throw at him. There are also a surprising number of things for kids to discover. Turtles, enormous tortoises, an axolotl, ponds and other little bits of wildlife are worked into the property. Our five-year-old loved feeding and watching the turtles and tortoises. One of the staff members caring for the tortoises also made sure we knew not to touch them because of the salmonella risk. How did I make it this far into adulthood without knowing that? Another unexpected detail was the nitro yaupon tea. I initially thought I was being offered cold brew coffee, which was challenged the moment I smelled it. Yaupon is a native holly whose leaves have a long history of being brewed as a caffeinated tea, and the person serving it gave us the whole background while preparing it. It was light, fragrant and really pleasant. Just another small thing that made the visit feel less transactional. The major caveat is price. This is NOT where I would necessarily come for a budget-conscious haul of plants I could easily find elsewhere. The nursery is in Westlake, the products are highly curated, and the pricing reflects the environment and clientele. That said, the plants we saw looked exceptionally healthy, the garden and home goods felt carefully selected, and there appeared to be some more unusual plant options mixed into the broader selection. You're paying for a noticeably different experience. And honestly, the experience is the reason give it five stars. We came in intending to look around for a few minutes and left wishing we'd had considerably more time. I tend to linger in nurseries anyway, but Barton Springs Nursery seems almost specifically engineered to encourage that behavior. Next time we'll come when we're not wedging botanical exploration between chores. Even if it isn't where you buy every plant for your yard, it's worth visiting at least once. We'll absolutely be back.

There's a giant garden gnome out front, plus two resident tortoises, parakeets, a pond with turtles, and even an axolotl inside the gift shop! It's so lovely to walk around here, admire their space, and gather inspiration from the wonderful assortment of plants they have. So I drove home empty-handed, having wasted an hour (and 30 miles). I'd just hoped for a nice drive and to check out a different garden shop. But this place isn't a garden shop, it's only really set up for dealing with contractors and wholesale operations, not individuals. Again, I wish their web page or the LivingSocial deal had made that clear. So, 1-star experience. However, the price list looks promising.
