Really disappointed in the service here, but just as disappointed in the selection. The girl working here had no clue what she was doing and there wasn't anyone else more experienced around to talk to. She was either on her phone or using it to look up the questions I had about a few plants they had. Either way, off putting and completely useless. Also (for those looking): They also do not grow/stock veggie starters or any herbs really. Very minimal and overpriced selection of old, basic Texas yard plants and a dusty little succulent and houseplant tent. I've been driving by Vivero for a while now and have always wanted to check it out. We decided to finally go the other day, and of course our timing was off as we were about to get the winter storm, so most of the plants were covered to protect them. Caroline came up to us right away with a huge friendly smile and explained that they were prepping for the freeze, and she offered to uncover and show us anything we were interested in seeing. She pointed us to the greenhouses with the plants we were interested in, and she worked nearby so that she could help if we needed it. She happily gave us the names and information on all of their gorgeous succulents, and you could tell she has a real passion and joy for her job and all of the plants. I'm a huge fan of naming my plants, and she absolutely loved it when we told her we wanted to buy "Edmund." We ended up getting a huge and stunning foxtail fern, and she even kept referring to him as Edmund while we were checking out. Replanting our yard as the existing plants were not low water users and not meant for TX summers. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I brought in some photos and orientations off different areas in my yard (ie N facing or morning sun, etc.). They guided me to choices based on the look that I wanted and the area in the yard. Everything they recommended has turned out great! Whatever they didn't have in stock, they called when it arrived and we went and picked it up. They are very easy to do business with. Two weeks after planting, already getting some chili pequins. Myself and the birds are enjoying them! Definitely check this place out. read more

I have passed by this wonderland of plants probably a thousand times, but today was my first time stopping. Shame on me! You guys, this place is a gem. They have a massive variety of plants that are incredibly well cared for and organized. They have taken the steps to provide an excellent customer experience by creating easily maneuverable walkways, signs for each row of plants and having expert gardeners on site to answer any questions you might have! 10/10 recommend checking this place out. I recently purchased an oak leaf hydrangea from Vivero for 39$. it looked a little less than vibrant with only one small shoot but was told it was just starting to leaf out . On the ride home the plant tipped knocking off the sprout but I planted it anyway assuming it could recover which it did not. Vivero will not give me a store credit or any sort of compensation for this plant. They don't accept returns for any reason. If I had been advised of this at the time of purchase I would not have bought the plant. Lesson learned. I will no longer be shopping for plants from them. The person I spoke to on the phone stated that the plant was at a vulnerable point when I bought it which makes me wonder why they would sell it at that point and why they don't take some ownership in the plants demise. read more

Moving here from another state and being first tome homeowners, we really didn't know much about what we could plant that wouldn't make it past a few weeks in a sunny Texas summer (followed by a thunderstorm the very next day). The owner (I think he's the owner) is super passionate about flowers/plants/trees, extremely knowledgeable about them and care, and just an awesome guy. The prices seem reasonable to me and the selection is awesome. The place is very well organized and everything is at least named if not included with a mini description about the plant. I really enjoy walking through the plants at this place.. Right off the bat, I'll say Barton Springs Nursery is my favorite, but Vivero comes in right behind them, for what I need. This is a "Mom & Pop" place, so you won't get the low price on potting soil or mulch like you will at Walmart.. but, you won't find a 30 gallon variegated agave at Walmart, either! If you've read any of my reviews, you know that I love good customer service.. The people here are nice, helpful, and I enjoy dealing with them. They aren't nearly as big as some other nurseries in town, but, they have stuff that I haven't seen anywhere else, and their plants are healthy! I've been buying borders and fillers, desert plants, hibiscus, etc this year.. and Vivero has a really cool Salvia Greggii that I haven't seen anywhere else, that has hot pink and white blooms, really nice, "hot lips", I think it's called.. I just bought a very nice agave "Cornelius" which is a smaller, slow growing, green with yellow stripes, agave, that will be the 'showpiece' at my front door.. Again, I haven't seen these anywhere else.. I've bought salvia, hibiscus, Mexican fire bush, esperanza, Red tipped Yucca, New Gold Lantana, and other plants from here, all have done very well for me. Honestly, their prices are very reasonable, although I haven't seen many sales there.. (I admit, I love finding bargains, like the $3 a piece Luna Blush perennial Hibiscus, on the close out table at Home Depot!! Sorry, I got them all).. Anyhow, when I have to chose between a really healthy looking plant or a really cheap sick lookin' plant, I'll pay the extra bucks for the healthy one, and everything I've seen at Vivero, is very healthy. I will continue to do business with this place, and will highly recommend it to anyone who asks. Well worth the drive, and if you have a weedeater or chainsaw that needs worked on, Hill Country Power is just down the street, I love them, too! read more

I absolutely love this nursery! I went since I heard that there were two plants that I was looking for. You can text them before you leave and they can confirm if the plant is there or not. The employees were extremely sweet and helpful. I was assisted as soon as I walked into the nursery. Unlike other nurseries, everything was very easy to find. I do wish that they had more things on shelves rather than on the ground. The plant i bought was a 25 gallon citrus plant and a passion vine. An employee was luckily there to load it into my cart and truck. He was more than happy to help and give me tips. I know he was busy with other things, but it was nice to see that he prioritized his customers! The nursery is a bit away from me, but if I'm in the area, I'll be glad to go back! Very pricy and there is no guarantee on any plant purchased; and they only sell plants, and not a great variety. I can understand perhaps smaller plants but those that cost $300 and up should come with some sort of guarantee, especially when someone who works there has offered to plant them (for a price). The selection is limited to the small area of the nursery center, there are no restrooms, and I've never received good customer care from this vendor. Everyone is harried and grump-acting. I guess that's why they work in a nursery...to avoid people. And it's not that I haven't given them a couple tries before coming to this conclusion (3 times in fact), and it's the same deal every time. And one point I chased down someone, I believe to be the owner, about plant guarantee (at a $600 cost, and a plant that was being pushed as the right choice for my yard-turned out it wasn't after I did some research) and got a very snarky answer, "Once you leave the gate it is your problem if it dies." Then walked off as though he couldn't believe the question. Ha~ There are better stocked and priced plant nurseries than this one, where you can also find products (soil, gravel, garden art, pottery, etc.), and better customer service in Austin and Dripping Springs. Customers paying these prices don't know better or have more $$$ than cents...;) I woke up!!! After I discovered they don't guarantee their plants I never returned :) read more

This is the best nursery in the Austin area. The array of plants, bushes and trees, is truly amazing. The plants always have large roots in plastic pots, which means they'll takeoff in another pot or your yard. The staff is knowledgable and patient with each customer. I have lived in the area for several years and never stopped by this nursery. On a whim yesterday, I decided to visit and I'm so glad I did! The parking lot was full, and while there only appeared to be 2 workers patrolling the area, I had someone greet me and assist me with questions. I received great advice on plant care, and didn't feel pressured to buy anything-they just wanted to ensure my plants were receiving proper care. I noticed in a few reviews that there were complaints of no warranty or guaranty on plants(I assumed this was obvious, being that these are live plants). While the grounds may be slightly smaller than some nurseries in the area, it is fully loaded with an assortments of plants that caught my attention. Pricing was reasonable, and I even spotted a few yuccas that were priced almost the same as a chain retailer I visited( rhymes with Bowes). I will definitely be back in the Spring when I need help with my flower beds. read more

Be aware of their return policy before you buy! No refunds, no exchange, no store credit....no NOTHING! Employee told me that once you exit the gate with your purchase, you own it and it is yours without exception! Says it is clearly posted....my bad for not seeing it! Very small road front and signs, so you may miss it when you drive by. Although it looks small, they have a good variety of native Texas drought tolerant plants. Recently bought some landscaping plants for a butterfly and hummingbird area, and the quality of the plants are very good. This is one of the best nurseries I have ever been to in Austin. I also do not feel as though plants are overpriced. I have been to almost all of the nurseries in Austin and their pricing is on par, or better, than what I have seen elsewhere. I am a graduate student and on limited income but really wanted to have some plants on my porch and Vivero growers made that possible for me. And their inventory is by no means limited! (and as to the comment on not having soil, they are located next door to geo-growers which is a soil company and have always referred me to swing next door and pick some up if needed) They have signs up all over the place saying no plants are animal resistant or animal proof and to discuss with the owners what type of plants you were looking for and what area you live in. These signs have been there since they opened (I went opening weekend) and have seen them every time I have gone to the nursery so I dont really understand "cape cod g"'s complaints. There is one that is giant and on the cash register and really hard to miss. There was another one on the door to the office where the register is as well...Also, I have a feeling that wasn't the owner she talked with, because the owner commented to her frustrations with a very sweet apology and said she was with another customer and was unable to attend to her, so another worker at the business helped her that day. The owners are extremely kind and helpful. I have never had a bad interaction with either of the owners, nor any of the workers there. Everyone is quick to help and will discuss what types of plants are best for where you live and what goes best together. They also give help in how to care for all the plants they have; I have never been able to keep anything alive before but their plants are really healthy and they give you really good advice on how to care for everything. read more

I have been a customer for years. I was considering two different plants and staff helped me. I took home one variety/color and decided the other color would be better. Less than 24 hours I returned with the plants to exchange for the other choice. "Sorry, cannot exchange them" was staff response. She had helped me yesterday and so I was asking just to make an even exchange. The plants were never taken out of pots. They do have a "no return" policy, however, making an even exchange didn't seem unreasonable considering I returned the following day. So, needless to say, I am unhappy with the plants I bought and very disappointed that they couldn't make an exception for an even exchange less than 24 hours. read more

Shop at this place if you like highway robbery. I explained to the owner that the deer in my neighborhood ate everything, and like a perfect Southerner, she sold me 8 overpriced plants that are "deer resistant" with a smile. When I brought one back two days later, a shadow of itself because it had been devoured by deer, she wouldn't even talk to me and her husband said "if you buy a car and crash it on the way home, you don't return it." (To which my husband responded, "you would if you had been told it was crash resistant!"). Were were prepared to spend a lot of money with them to completely renovate our yard, but instead they got $200 and have taught me to never support small, local businesses. Ahhhh! A nice review I am happy to dish out! To tell you how much I love this nursery, I was scheduled to move to CA last year (which I did not), and I said to Michael and Katherine the thing I would miss most about Austin would be Vivero. They have so many varieties of succulents, cactus, trees, plants, shrubs. Each employee is a knowledgeable expert. I may on a whim buy plants at other places because I'm a plantaholic from birth. I just can't pass up a plant that calls to me. I regret that decision each time when they die. Stopping by Vivero to look for just one thing I need, luckily I live nearby, I never leave without a full cart. These guys work so hard at what they do and the expertise shows in their healthy lovely plants. Have you been to Home Depot lately? I've only met one employee this year who knew where a plant I was looking for would be located much less what it looked like. This is after watering them each day. Like Pyrachanthis?
