We've spent thousands of dollars at this nursery over the years and recently had an experience that will end our relationship with them. Last year we purchased two trees, two large pots, two cacti, and a desert shrub. We were explicit that everything would remain outside year-round and needed to withstand Austin winters. We relied on their staff's expert guidance -- including buying the pots directly from them -- and were told we'd be fine without bringing anything in or wrapping them. We even replaced two cacti specifically because our previous ones couldn't handle the cold, and were assured the new ones could. This past winter, despite temperatures staying well above the listed cold tolerance minimums and only a week of cold weather, every single plant died. When we raised the issue, the staff never pulled up our account, never asked what plants we had purchased, and offered no apology or empathy. The second person we spoke with openly acknowledged that we had been given bad guidance -- but hid behind a 30-day return policy anyway. I pointed out that they were admitting their own experts gave us bad advice and said you're stance is to still do absolutely nothing for a long-time customer, his response was, simply, "pretty much." Mistakes happen. But when a business admits fault and still refuses to make it right -- without even the courtesy of an apology -- that tells you everything about how they value their customers. I visited The Great Outdoors to spruce up my backyard. This nursery did not disappoint. They offer an overwhelming amount of plants, both outdoor and indoor, soils and mulch, and beautiful pottery. They also offer some rare variety plants but understandably, at a premium price. Service is very friendly. They even offer free drainage hole drilling if the pots you're buying do not have drainage holes. I left The Great Outdoors with a few star jasmine to climb up the side of my house and I'm so excited for the fragrant flowers they produce! I also purchased a baby staghorm fern, baby umbrella tree and beautiful marbled terracotta pots for them to live in. So check this place out to elevate your space! read more

My friend and I popped in here today and we had a lovely time perusing the grounds. It's like a free visit to a botanical garden. Everything is so well cared for and abundant. We finally left with a Pride of Barbados. He needed something for this front yard that is full sun. You can't go wrong with a POB. They are stunning!! Everyone that worked there was helpful and kind. I love coming here. It's such a good time just roaming around and checking out all the different plants that have. Which is a ton. I have picked up a wide variety of different things here from herbs, flowers, bushes, pretty much whatever you can think of... everything is fairly priced and they do discounts on items that need to be discounted. Which I really appreciate because some places will still have full price for something that's falling apart. People that work here are very nice and are more than happy to talk shop with you. Don't be afraid to ask a question on the type of dirt that you need or the plant that you are considering buying. Parking is such a pain in the ass here. But it's worth it. Service-Service is there if you need it all you have to do is ask. But the employees don't really talk to you otherwise so they're not very warm and welcoming. Maybe they're pretty busy I understand. Selection - selection is really good although pretty overpriced especially with the plant market bottoming out in 2025. Plants are no longer valuable and should not be expensive. But their prices are still price very expensive like it was back in the 2019 through 2021 plant craze. So they definitely never did adjust their price according to the current market value. The main thing I'm writing this is because I was kind of weirded out by the Idol worship in the greenhouse. I'm not sure why this company chose to bring religion into a public non-religious facility. There is a time and place for religion, but a plant nursery is not yet. Play should stick with retail and capitalism on nature. Yes, I will continue to come here as I do on a regular basis. They help me with specific needs (like a spray to repel caterpillars from my dill) & help de iding on plants for certain light/ shade conditions in my yard. I've gotten herbs & indoor/ outdoor plants from here for years now, and this is a fantastic spot to just park & walk around, too! It's definitely a "happy place" for me! We live 45 minutes away yet we still come here every season to see what they have in stock. It's a large place that offers a wide selection of plants and pots. Every plant is clearly labeled with what conditions it needs to thrive - usually providing more information than other nurseries. There are indoor and outdoor plants. There's a large greenhouse in the back. There's a beautiful 700-year-old live oak whose canopy shades the center. And the staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Went for the first time and was thoroughly impressed with the level of organization this place has. The only thing I'd recommend is the staff shouldn't assume someone's been there before. When checking out, I asked for 2 more bags of soil that were not on the shelves but confirmed were nearby. The cashier handed me my receipt and I had no idea what to do next (to get the other bags of soil). He asked me what kind of car I had, so I told him, and I thought that meant he'd be telling someone to bring them to my car. So I stood by my car for 5-8 minutes until I walked over to a staff member and told him my situation - it was then I learned that I had to pull my car up to a certain area for them to load. When I'm going to check out the employees are talking to each other and I walk up and stand there waiting for them to say something or let me know who can help me check out and they don't say anything to me. They just keep talking to each other until I say hi to them. Seem more interested in their conversations with each other than working or providing any form of good customer service. The last time I was in the area and tried to make a visit I didn't plan on checking their hours of business so that attempt was a fail. Months later, I finally made plans to visit this nursery before checking out Leroy and Lewis barbecue which is literally down the street! This nursery is huge and there is plenty to look at: from shrubs, to fruit trees to succulents. The staff was very helpful and there was always one right around the corner from wherever we were! What I love about this place is not only the variety of plants, the friendly staff but free drilling and the variety of pottery they carry! I've been the plenty nurseries and most always lacked in the pottery area. Price ranges vary but I spent about $70 each on my past two visits. I bought two bonsais (Japanese Yew and Willowleaf) and two indoor house plants (Birkin and Bi-color Dracaena Braid) as well as pots for them. Excellent offerings, inconsistent customer service. You can ask three employees where to find an item and get three different answers- some increased educational system would benefit. Or honestly just plate a couple of maps around the store to help people orient themselves - like they have at the mall. The young lady with long pony-tailed black hair with purple stripes could use some education in customer service basics; not a single word of pleasantry or offer of assistance. The minute she asked if I needed a receipt she was turned around talking to her coworker leaving me with a tabletop full of items to manage myself. A little offer to help, or an offer to come around and scan big items, or even a word or two wouldn't have left such a bad impression. read more

Avoid working or shopping here! The place is owned by millionaires that do not care about plants or the livelihood of their employees. The working conditions are unsafe and unethical for a multitude of reasons. Employees are not forklift certified There is no maintenance on the hundreds of years old oak trees, so limbs could fall and kill anyone at any given moment The metal tent over the cashier stand is not up to code Corroded pallets of pots that weigh 1000s of pounds could fall at any given moment They do not offer hazard pay or medical insurance Employees are expected to work in hazardous weather conditions with no accommodations Uneven pavement that you can easily trip over Toxic work environment, and no understanding for burnout or medical issues A tyrannical manager that fires employees for simply disagreeing with them Manager refuses to give employees raises for taking on more job responsibilities Manager doesn't respond to Slack and argues with employees for miscommunication The manager lies about job descriptions and offers "monthly reviews" at interviews, but does not follow through in doing so Brainless owners that start construction projects on the property without properly finishing them, and leaves the construction project in a hazardous state Price gouging The plants are not well taken care of because the workers are over worked The owners act as HR, but do not want to take responsibility for their tyrannical manager And so much more than I can count. If you care about your well being or plants in any way, avoid this place at all costs! read more

My favorite nursery to visit at Austin for potting soil. The stars of the show are their Congo African Gray, Sable, and their Lilac Crowned Amazon, Pascal. The prices are somewhat steep for grown plants, but I enjoy starting to raise plants from when they're young. I really must rant about their parrots located in the gift shop. But be warned that you should wash your hands before touching them. Also, the parrots are sometimes unfriendly toward male adults and children, and may even lunge to try and bite. Pet them at your own risk. Sable is the gray parrot with a bright red tail. She's incredibly well socialized, loves scritches on her head, and loves being chatty. Especially if you're a female. She speaks in a male voice when she talks, but you probably couldn't tell it was a parrot talking because of the clarity of her voice. Pascal is the other parrot that's mostly bright green. She enjoys hiding in a corner and staring at you. I get her to approach me by sticking my index finger between the cage bars. Yes, I am well aware of the risk of my finger being bitten. However, Pascal has never done anything other than lunge. After she lunges, she obediently bends her head down and lets me scratch her head. As I turn to leave the gift shop, both parrots both bid me farewell. read more

One of my favorite places to get plants especially citrus trees. They have a wide selection of citrus, such as oranges, grapefruit, lemons, kumquats and more! I also find them to be in better condition than others. The trees are disease free, tall and full of foliage. The staff are all very helpful, especially on the phone. You can call ahead to see when they'll get shipments of new plants, even place holds too. Which will help guarantee you something before your visit. On weekends they'll likely be a line since parking is very limited, but I've only had to wait 5 - 10 mins. read more

We visited at least three nurseries and The Great Outdoors was the only nursery to carry a large selection of 12" nursery pots. They don't carry Miracle Gro because it's synthetic, but they do carry a fertilizer containing liquid seaweed. I love that they have an ample free parking lot. read more

I LOVE the great outdoors! As a plant girlie I am always looking for a great plant store. This place has incredible variety and a great staff that will help you find what you are looking for! They have the best variety of indoor plants in the city. Do yourself a favor and avoid those boutique plant stores with overpriced plants and go to a larger store like the great outdoors. Loveeee this place. When a friend recommended that I come here for plants, I had no idea this nursery was so big! They have so many different kinds of plants and flowers it's easy to get lost. Luckily they have friendly and knowledgeable workers there to help guide you through your purchase. I found one particularly hard-working cat sunbathing by the succulents. I bought plants from another local business but made my way to TGO for soil and pots because I was in the area and had some time to kill... Not only was the selection incredible (of pots and plants), the prices were so reasonable. Had I purchased the same exact plants from here instead of the other business, I would have spent $150-$180 less, which is substantial! I'm guessing because they're a larger nursery, they can buy plants in bulk, thereby driving down the prices. The service was also outstanding. I showed a photo of a depressed plant to a staff member and they immediately told me which soil I needed to repot the thing, and added a nice little pro tip of using distilled water vs tap water to help revive it! I pledge to be a better plant parent in 2022 and that means visiting TGO more often. read more
