Many of what was once brick and mortar restaurants currently operate out of food trucks and offer outside seating!! They're a few full service restaurants who work hard to meet the needs of visitors, so be prepared for long waits for seating!!

When I was growing up around these parts we lived for summer break & beautiful Mexico Beach. Highway 98 runs from Pirate'cola to Mexico Beach. We called it "Adventure Road" 2 & 1/2 hours of stunning beach after beach, sugar white sands & emerald green waters. The most beautiful beaches in the United States are on the gulf of Mexico. Navarre, Ft Walton Beach, Destin, Panama City etc., gorgeous beaches all the way down to desolate, Mexico Beach. Back then, you could drive your truck right onto Mexico beach, build a campfire in the sand. Camp right beside the ocean. Those were the days my friend, those were the days. My memories drift back often of Mexico Beach, us 3 kids on summer break. 16 Year olds going on 30, we were inseparable. Back then, I had a pink Flamingo colored side step Ford. My brother, his best friend moi boyfriend riding shotgun, in the back, a dog named "Masquerade" & 3 surf boards. Those were the days, wild & free on "adventure road" my highway, just like Jason Aldean sings about in his song. And yes, along the way, we have all paid a lot of heavy tolls. October 2018 Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach with 160 mile per hour winds & a 17-and-a-half-foot storm surge. It was a Category 5 hurricane, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. Now, here we are, 5 years later. I'm back on my highway, "Adventure Road" back to Mexico Beach & it has never been more beautiful. It's been years, but here we are. Sunsets lost, have been again found, and the sound of the waves mingle with the familiar voices of all the ones we lost, along the way. As the waves roll by, their voices linger, for a while, then drown silently, in the sound of the crashing swells, washing away into a blur. Some things have changed, but many, remain the same, as Mexico Beach, re-emerges anew. As the sun goes down on Mexico Beach, the old memories wash away in the foamy white tides like old scattered photographs. Faded memories of a flamingo pink Ford rolling down adventure road.. Decent little park in downtown Port St Joe by the boat ramp. It has a couple of new pickleball /…read moretennis courts, a playground that could use a little help, a pavilion with tables, a few benches, and a couple of swings. I have brought my child here the past 4 years on and off. She loves the pirate ship playground. It has seen better days but she will still get on it and slide. The pavilion would be the perfect place to have a small gathering. Or sit back in the swings on a nice fall or spring day and enjoy.

The restrooms were relatively clean and there was a baby changing stain on the women's side. The boat launch was extra Wide and concrete instead of gravel. There was also a fish cleaning station and a place to borrow life jackets. The fishing pier was awesome for taking some gorgeous sunset photos and we saw so many birds there. Between all the swings, benches, and picnic tables, there were plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view or watch the kids play on the playground. There were constantly people playing pickle ball, so it seems like it would be an easy place to find someone to play with. The park is non smoking and pets must be kept on leashes.

Recently, St. George Island was rated in the top 10 beaches in the US, and as I have been there…read moremany times, I would agree. Unfortunately the recent fame may have impacted this quiet uncommercialized family friendly island. This visit was filled with all sorts of redneck behavior from island guests. Our neighbors, following an all day beach drunk fest, busted glass, screamed, and fought into the wee hours of the morning. We witnessed a good bit more "recreational drug use", which is not normal for this place, and we ran into 10 or so small groups of beach fisherman who were targeting shark which is a no no on a busy beach. I'm pleased that the clear water, white beach, and the lack of commercialization is still there, but I'm disappointed that St. George has made the fatal turn of turning into a little PCB. I'm sad to say that I may be changing my beach destination in the future. Please come back to me St. George Island that I have come to love.

The main attraction at this beautiful park is the honor walk. With a view from the bluff…read moreoverlooking the gulf, flags and granite stones honor those who have served our country. The 70 foot tall American flag is at the center. Surrounding the honor walk, a number of picnic shelters, a huge grass lawn and a bunch of parking so that you can access the playgrounds, the dog park and the pickleball courts. The garden is small but beautiful, with a lighted pathway, a few benches, and a pergola about halfway through--perfect for a quiet stroll. The memorial, dedicated to soldiers of the Vietnam War, was peaceful and thoughtfully done. There's plenty of parking, and a few small lakes nearby with a sign warning about alligators.

The gardens weren't open during our visit as they were still doing repairs from hurricane Michael. This house was built in 1838. There are three stories of house access available to tour. The house is much smaller than I expected, but the original furnishings and period clothing on display is really interesting to see. Our tour guide was very lively and full of information about the area and all families who lived in the house before it was sold to the state of Florida in 1994. Would highly recommend if you're in the area!

We did see an alligator, but the views and the history shared by Captain Cook were worth the tour even if we didn't see any wildlife. My husband and I recommend the airboat tour and plan to make it an annual tradition. Captain Cook makes the tour fun but the swamp views are worth the trip even if the alligators are hiding. Tip: if you are in the front row on the airboat I would recommend not wearing lipgloss....everything sticks!
