No fancy seasonings, just classic ham & pickle goodness! The chicken salad is good, a bit more minced than expected but still good. They have parking, friendly staff who will help you decide what to get (or you can roll the literal dice on the counter) & lots chips & drinks to choose from. There is no seating - just takeaway. Great place to stop for a real Maine Italian. I stopped during the lunch rush and placed an order, it was out within 5 minutes! The food quality is much better than any chain sub shops in the area, the bread tastes very fresh, and it's cheaper too. Good selection of Coke products as well as Humpty Dumpty potatoe chips. There is no indoor seating but it is located next to Shevenell Park that has some benches and tables. read more

Subs, or Italians as they are called, are pretty basic- ham, turkey, salami, roast beef. You aren't going to find anything with "parm" in the name, nor a grilled option like steak and cheese. Very soft, fresh bread. Veggies were fresh, meat was sparse. Subs are built on a roll that is cut like a hot dog roll. The ingredients are sitting in the crevice at the top of the bread. Truly the best Maine Italians! George's is a hole in the wall sandwich shop that's been around for decades and not much sas changed. They make the best classic Italian - boiled ham, white American cheese, and the freshest / crisp / ripe vegetables that set this sandwich shop apart from the rest. Even their tomatoes are firm and flavorful. I always add banana peppers for an extra 50 cents. The classic Italian is ham, but you have the option to add salami or other meats. I chose both ham and salami which was delicious. I recommend at least doing doubling up on ham if you're choosing a single protein. If I could ask for anything more, it would be having the option to add jalapeños. Besides that, this place is a gem and will forever be on my Maine list. Bring cash! read more

Born in 1948 when this business was founded, I was raised and have lived most of my life in Biddeford and enjoyed these sandwiches and the friendship of at least two generations of the Greek family owners, who put an exclamation point on Franklin, a little street which connects Main and Alfred, over the years joining the Nutshell Restaurant, Palace Diner, 20th Century Lanes and Doc's Tavern as famous and popular landmarks for locals. Aside from the finest sandwiches and service in the city, George's showed respect and courtesy to their customers by informing them in advance whenever the shop would be closed for vacation a few times a year, or the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays. This place is an institution. If you haven't been here, you are missing out. They do one thing, Italians. And they are absolute perfection. Veggies are not only perfectly sliced, but always fresh and made to order. The most popular is ham, loaded, salt pepper oil and olives. Honestly, getting it done any other way is just silly. I do get mine on a wheat roll which makes me feel a bit better about myself. These sandwiches are simple, they offer no frills (sauces, etc) but they don't need to and they know it. I ordered two sandwiches. One was made correctly but doused in oil. The olives were Greek and not black, they fell apart when eating. The one person I dealt with was nice enough except even when instructions were written down, couldn't follow them. The second sandwich pertains to the instructions written down. There were no tomatoes on the sandwich, the meat was little even when asking for double meat. The olives were Greek instead of black which is a noticeable difference. If you didn't have what I was asking for then tell me. When I pay over 20 for 2 sandwiches and give a 20% tip when the machine asks for one right after you pay, I expect my instructions followed and the sandwiches made correctly. I will not return due to poor service and sandwiches which should be less than what they are charging. read more

George's has been popular for over 60 years and it's because they found a good formula and have stuck to it. They make good sandwiches that aren't too expensive. The Italians are loaded with big pieces of tasty vegetables and meat. If you want more meat in your sandwich or there's a vegetable you don't like, they'll make the sandwich however you want. There's a list of ingredients so you can figure out what they're putting inside, but salt and pepper aren't on the list. I found my sandwich to be a little salty because I didn't know they were going to add salt. Now I know and I'll be back to George's soon. Next time, more meat and no salt. The minute you open up your sandwich, feast your eyes on a perfectly made Italian that is generously stuffed with items including tomatoes, pickles, green peppers, onions, olives, and cheese. Customers can choose between salami, turkey, ham, roast beef, genoa, or tuna for protein, or you can keep it a veggie sandwich! I highly suggest ordering the ham or the tuna. I've been a long time patron of Georges. Love the Italian sandwiches, they have been very fresh in the past, and decided to try them again with new ownership. So my wife and I picked up two italians on Saturday for lunch, and found one of them to have stale bread. It was an end roll to top it off.. Not sure what happened here, if it was stale from Botto's bakery, or was saved end rolls destined for some unlucky customer. The italians were purchased at noon, and eaten no more than 30 minutes later so should have been fresh. As for the content of the sandwiches, they were filled with tomatoes, ham, cheese, and veggies as expected. This experience was all about the bread , and as you know directly impacts the enjoyment of the italian. If you're gonna eat carbs, you want it to be "FRESH". Growing up with the almighty Philadelphia hoagie, I have had to adjust to the Portland-style Italian sandwich. In general, I am not a fan - the rolls are usually subpar, and the whole olive and green pepper thing reminds me of Subway. There are, however, a few that I have found enjoyable. Of these, George's reigns supreme. Though the style of roll is the same - squishy and a bit bland - the rolls seems just a little fresher and more flavorful. The cold cuts seem a cut above others I have had on an Italian sandwich, especially the turkey. The sandwiches are well put together, so they don't fall apart or congeal into a paste-like texture midway through. And the price is really fair. I think my favorite aspect is the feel of the joint. It's clearly been there for years, unchanged and unaffected by interior design trends. It retains it's character, and feels like walking into 1977. That's not always a bad thing. read more

In this day and age that may not always be perceived as a good thing. But, I can tell you, for George's, it's been a recipe for success. In addition to that, I think what has George's be such a local stand-by is that they keep things simple. If you want perhaps the best Italians in the area, this is the place to go to. I like the fact that they only accept cash, and that their Ham or Salami Italians are only $3.30!! The bread is excellent and the veggies are cut thick and fresh. I've actually only had the salami or ham italians here (may times over), but that's why I come. However they also have other sandwiches on their menu, which look good too. On a final note, one of the things that always impresses me about George's is their neatness and cleanliness. For the lunchtime rush they arrange their most common sandwiches in a partially pre-made state and cover them in wax paper. When you order they slide yours out, add the toppings you wish (go for the works, salt, pepper and oil) and wrap it up. All in about 30 seconds.
