The pita was soft and made with love, the meat was tender and juicy, the tzatziki was already on the souvlaki and so tasty. I did not expect anything from this place and I was truly amazed by not only the food, but the service right from entry. Have ordered from them twice, both times were good. FINALLY! A place that has LAMB souvlaki!!! Was tasty, tender, and fresh. If you love proper souvlaki, you'll love the lamb. Years and years ago, longer than I care to remember, I used to live in NDG in my first apartment and ordered or biked over to Souvlaki George all the time, mostly because this is one of the few places that offers lamb souvlaki instead of the usual pork or chicken. George was usually the only one manning the restaurant with his wife and he always came out and chatted with you. Back then, it was a cute sit-down restaurant with blue and white gingham-print tablecloth and posters of Greece and an almost kitschy Hellenistic theme. Years later, George tried expanding (I remember the Souvlaki George at Atwater next to the old McDonalds) to several locations and tried getting into politics. Unfortunately those forays never worked out but Souvlaki George on Monkland is still there and going strong all these years later. I found myself in the old hood for something and decided to give old Souvlaki George a go. It's changed a bit, it's not the cute resto I remember fondly but it's now more of a take out counter and with a few tables. It's more shabby than it used to be, the place could do with some renovations but the lamb souvlaki is still great and the home made fries and tsatziki sauce are still fresh. I saw a steady stream of people of come the whole time I was there. Sometimes it's nice to see old places still where they were and still doing OK. read more

I can't say enough about how delicious this meal was. David was our server and seems to be possibly a manager as well. Though shy at first he was so sweet and kind, though he came right out of his shell once we started chatting with him about just moving back to Montreal after 19 years away from home. So much is made fresh in house like the Greek salad on the side, the tzatziki sauce and the mains too of course. We had the #5 Pork Souvlaki and the #6 Chicken Souvlaki. The meat was just perfectly cooked on both and the fried potatoes were to die for! The combination was a delight of which I have not had in a very long time. We shared the carrot cake and of course some Baklava (also house-made) for dessert. Both were super yummy, and I have to note that the Baklava was the perfect combination of lightly sweet and savoury. I am so hooked!! read more

Dropped by the place with a friend - tried their pikilia plate (regrets) their calamari (regrets) ... they had 'a' beer option, a Coors Lite (for the seriously upscale micro-brew price of 8.50) ... our meager chicken and lamb sticks were in absolutely no danger of being undercooked. A perfunctory "is everything alright" from the waitress only happened long into the meal while walking past her seated inside the restaurant (we were on the terrace), and by chance we caught pricing errors while paying (not in our favor). Sorry GS, it's easy to price your menu like the quality will be on the plate, it's something else to actually put that quality in front of your customers once they're seated. Maybe it was just a really bad night for the cook, or maybe their only real concern is getting money into the cash register. Disclaimer: I have not been here in about 16 years. As others have shared their amusing "George" stories, I thought that I would as well. Once upon a time, before the internet was a place to find food choices...I picked up my yellow pages and called various greek restaurants in my area to see if they delivered. Georges apparently did. So I ordered. And yes...even back then...it took a long, long time. Eventually - and by now I was starving - this man came to the door with my food. I had a 20 in my hand (or at least I think I did), took the food, got change, went inside quite excited to eat...and just when I am about to open the package of food...a knock on the door... The delivery man is standing there. He says, "I think you may have not paid me". I say, "but you gave me change". He says, "I counted my money, and I don't have the 20 from you" (he showed me an enormous wad of cash, and I wondered how he knew what MY 20 looked like) He asked me if I could look around and see if I had accidentally taken it back. I walked inside, saw the change - there was no 20 attached to it, and went back and told him so. He looked upset but left. Again I walk over to the food, this time I lift the lid off and am about to put something into my mouth when I hear extremely loud banging at the door. I open it. It's the deliver man again. lol....He is now raising his voice, very angry - "YOU did NOT pay me. I DON'T have the money. I want to come inside and see if you have the 20!!!" No joke. He wants to come inside my apartment. I said, "I have others 20s at home but they don't belong to you". I try and close the door. He puts his foot in the door. He screams "I'm going to call the police!" and other such garbage - I say, "CALL THEM!". And slam the door shut, luckily not cutting his toe off in the process. Now...I am really really hungry by this point, as this whole process took about 10 minutes more. I sit down. I am thinking "I'll never order from this stupid restaurant again". I look at the food. It was chicken souvlaki. And it looked amazing. I bit into the food...and...I must say, it was one of the best things I have ever tasted. No joke. Now what the-f am I going to do??? How can I get more of this because you see...the man at the door...well...he told me his name...George...so yes...the owner is the one I had the fight with. Over the next many months, I had multiple girlfriends of mine go to Georges Souvlaki to pick up food for me. It was always delicious. And I always hid in the car, hoping to not be recognized by George who I felt would never forget me. One girl - while watching me eat, said, "I think you like that food more than me"...it was that good. About 1.5 years later of using women to get my Georges fix...I walked into the restaurant wearing a long coat, a hoodie and get this...sunglasses...at NIGHT! I figured, who cares, I'm a weirdo but I can order food. And I did. And I did NOT take off the glasses. (they were mirrored) George sees me. Comes over...looks at me...and says..."you look familiar"...and that was it. I started coming back. He never remembered and eventually I was able to dine there as a real customer, sans disguise. I have to say - his food was excellent. He was also a very nice man. And apparently, a great hero to many people that he has supported over the years - from his wife's family from the Philippines to many mentally challenged young people who he gave jobs to. (not kidding) Lastly, after I took those first few bites in my apartment on the first occasion, I moved my pillow and underneath it was a 20 dollar bill. I am giving Souvlaki George a one star because of their service. My hubby and I live no more than 10 minutes away by car. We *used to* order delivery often and we have also been in the "dining room" for a meal. The deliverer's do not give a crap about what type of pop you ordered. MULTIPLE times we have gotten wrong cans. Our last delivery was TOTALLY WRONG and my husband placed the order with "George" himself. I ordered chicken souvlaki and I got Gyro meat. We asked for the T sauce on the side and they gave us 2 super tiny cups which was supposed to be enough to cover 2 Gyros - I barely had enough sauce for half of one. We called the restaurant about the cans (before we realized that my order was wrong) and here is what "George" told us: "The pop companies are always changing the look of their cans. My driver doesn't always recognize which can is which". He gave us attitude and clearly made us feel like we were inconveniencing him. We will *never* order from or dine at Souvlaki George again. As a poor college student rooming on Loyola, this restaurant was always our late night go to meal. Of course there is nothing in NDG open late but this restaurant and it's good drunk food. Simply put, the delivery was terrible. We could have walked to and from the restaurant 10 times before getting our food. But the poutine is great, and their gyros and chicken pitas are very good. The salad is not the best, but everything else on the "plate meals" are good. Their fries are crispy which is always awesome when you come home late at night, and they actually do have some good deals if you check out their website and want to go into something with a friend like the "2 poutine, 2 gyro, 2 coke" combo. I've only ordered there once more since leaving Loyola campus, and picked up the food. George is definitely a character. A friend of mine stole a menu one night that we were in there. He literally chased us down the street, and when we stopped to give it back, he signed it with his name and gave it back to her. I have only ever ordered take out from Souvlaki George so I cannot comment on the service or the ambiance of the restaurant. I have ordered from Souvlaki George twice. The first time something happened when they took our order and they wrote down the address completely wrong. The driver obviously got lost and so our food came about an hour and a half after we ordered it and was seriously cold. We each ordered a chicken pita and even though it was cold, it wasn't bad. The fries were also pretty good once we heated them up. Given that the food wasn't so bad cold and that they take debit over the phone, we tried them again. The second time the food came much faster, but to be honest, it wasn't all that much warmer. They should consider investing in one of those insulated packs, seeing as their delivery zone seems to be quite large. Overall, the pros: pitas and fries are pretty good especially for the price, they take interac over the phone. But, cons: cold on delivery, and the tzatziki sauce is missing something, maybe it's not salty enough or not garlicy enough but it doesn't taste as good as it should. read more

Ordering to eat away from the retaurant is excellent, but doing so at the restaurant is not what I was expecting going there. I find it a bit dirty and not well ventilated. The cool thing about this particular restaurant is that the REAL Souvlaki George, the one who ran for mayor of Montreal, and the one who started the chain, works here. He is eccentric as fuck and can be pretty hilarious. However, he can also be the biggest cock-blocker on the planet. My old roommate and I came here once with a couple of Korean girls and good old Souvlaki George came up to us making hilarious (but totally inappropriate) comments to them, asking them a million questions about if they were Japanese or not, and insisting that they really "feel" Montreal and let Montreal go inside of them. He put his arm around them, touched their shoulders, etc. All really funny stuff to me, but it made the girls really uncomfortable. I have seen him cock-block Concordia students on dates as well. It could be that he doesn't intentionally do this and that he's simply eccentric; however, if you're considering going on a date here for whatever reason, you have been warned. The food is decent. The greek-style potatoes are great. The delivery service is terrible - I lived a 5 minute walk away from this place and it would routinely take them over an hour for us to get our food. If you want to eat at the restaurant, George will make a big show of sitting you down and giving you good service. However, the barely pubescent girl they hired as a waitress has the biggest fucking attitude problem I've ever encountered in the service industry. I don't know if she still works there, but she made me feel as if I was facing charges at the Nuremberg trial every time I went. Which is not a very good feeling. She constantly looked pissed and like she wanted to rip our heads off. The one truly amazing thing about this restaurant though is that it is usually open till 5 AM - pretty much the only place in NDG open that late. Now that is impressive. If you're a Concordia student at Loyola I can see this place being very tempting to frequent as there aren't that many restaurants close by in this area of NDG, but consider that shitty business practices don't deserve to be rewarded. read more

I used to order from Soulkai Georges on a weekly basis, but I moved away from Montreal a few years ago so haven't ordered since. Firstly, they raised their prices tremendously. Even though I was paying 5-6 dollars more for the same dish I got 3 years ago, I was still willing to make the order. About 10 minutes after placing the order I received a call saying they didn't realize that I didn't meet the minimum requirement for delivery because I was 99 cents short and live too far (I am about a 7 minute drive from them). I don't understand, how much do they expect me to pay for a piece of chicken and some rice??? I usually always order for delivery but sometimes I eat on the terrace in the summer. The thing I love about this place is that the food is always consistent , it's always fresh and my food pretty much always comes on time (delivery).The prices are standard for any Greek restaurant almost the same as marathons maybe a little cheaper and the food is much better, in my opinion. My favourite is the chicken pita plate, the meat is amazing and the salad n fries are probably the best I've ever had!! I gave George Souvlaki one star because I recently ordered some lamb pita combos from them and the meat they had used seemed much like it dated from a few days ago since it did not have a good taste at all. Frankly the service was not as professional as excepted from the receptionist. It was disappointing as I had ordered a lot of them for a birthday party and ended up discarding them and ordering from another restaurant. I personally don't recommend this place since the quality of the food is so poor that food poisoning is very probable! read more

I had occasion to stop by this place before attending a Concordia University football game as the football field is right across the street from the establishment. Though I am not Canadian and I do not live in Montreal I do try and take in at least one Canadian university or college football game each year. Every time I attended a game at Concordia I promised myself a visit to Souvlaki George thinking that given its proximity to Concordia it would probably be a "go to" place for Greek food. I mean who eats more than college students? Well, to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. First off the place was in my humble opinion dingy and dirty and the service was at best surly and I was there only for a take out order. In addition to the surly service - AND I WILL PREFACE THIS COMMENT BY SAYING THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRING THEME IN CANADA - substitutions on menu items seem to be as unwelcome at the place as a Toronto Maple Leaf sweater wearing Federalist marching up and down Monkland Avenue imploring Quebec to become officially English speaking. I mean what is it in Canada where you cannot ask for a reasonbable substitution (like substituting rice for french fries)? Anyway, I could have lived with the dirty interior and the surly service if the food was any good but really it was no surprise that the food was horrible. Overcooked, greasy, and wholly unappetizing - and this from a guy who will eat just about anything and NEVER complain. So, bottom line is that if you happen to be attending a Stingers athletic event (and the only reason one would find themselves at this end of Sherbrooke Avenue is to attend an event at Concordia as there is certainly nothing else there) then take this advice from a humble football-loving American and stay away from Souvlaki George. read more

Called for delivery and was advised that they don't accept Visa for delivery; checked the justeat.ca app and found out to order there is a fee for delivery, so I called them back and said I would come pick it up, was told I need to present two pieces of ID with purchase?! Lmao! Food tastes real bad. Horrible frozen fries. Phony chicken schwarma and even the gyro meat is bought cooked and sliced and then put in frier with all the other garbage. Exceptional - start to finish. We arrived early to take in the orchestra symphonique de lisle at Concordia at Oscar Peterson Hall. So being famished we looked to Yelp to provide local dining options. Georges Souvlaki happened to be right across the road. Georges is unassuming however upon entering we were immediately welcomed and seated by a very friendly young lady. The menus are entirely in French however the i tired of each item made it easy to understand the offerings. Time to order was under five minutes and the wine choices though limited were nicely paired and very reasonable.We selected lamb skewer and lamb chops both which came nicely spiced with fried potatoes, salad, Pita with tziki sauce. All of which was delivered to our table by the Chef and Owner - George who was pleased to tell us that all the menu items were home made and prepared on site. The entire meal was scrumptious and excellent. For desert we enjoyed baklava which was generous and flavorful. The coffee was strong but not bitter. For two the entire meal with a half liter of house red was $65.00 which I dream a real bargain. We will certainly eat at George's again when in the area. read more
