Background & First Rental Property We were introduced to William Whalen (Handyman Around the Corner) by the owners of Malt & Burger after seeing the excellent refurbishment work he did on their restaurant. William has handled multiple large-scale repair jobs for us over the years, starting with getting our first rental property ready for sale. It involved a massive list of detailed, nit-picky items, and his team knocked them out quickly and affordably. Work on the first rental included: * Living Areas & Bedrooms: Complete paint touch-ups, lubricating stubborn blinds, installing missing outlet/switch plates, mounting mirrors, and installing heavy glass cabinet doors. * Kitchen & Bathrooms: Replacing plumbing fixtures/faucets, re-attaching the dishwasher kickplate, and repainting the master bathroom vanity and cabinetry. * Utility & Safety: Installing an extended dryer exhaust hose, cleaning out deep roof-line lint vents, and covering exposed electrical outlets. * Exterior & Garage: Repairing storm door handles and weatherstripping, patching/painting garage ceilings, and securely hanging fluorescent workshop lights. Our Main House For our primary residence, William and his crew stepped up to handle major exterior upgrades and structural changes, including: * Replacing three windows and fully recaulking all windows. * Pressure washing and painting the entire exterior of the house. * Demolishing the rear patio cover and adjusting the rear screen door. * Replacing the front door completely. * Installing a foundational drip line system. Second Rental Property On our second rental unit, they executed a total refresh from top to bottom: * Exterior Maintenance: Repairing and recaulking the Hardie siding seams, followed by two fresh coats of exterior paint. * Fencing: Installing two new 6 ft. x 6 ft. chain-link gates. * Interior Overhaul: Repairing drywall damage, refreshing the trim and baseboards with new paint, and installing a foundational drip line. * Flooring Highlight: Replaced all old flooring with waterproof laminate flooring and new shoe molding. A huge shoutout goes to his flooring specialist--he was incredibly fast, and the final floor job was absolutely perfect! Minor Adjustments & Accountability Any minor do-overs were rare and handled with total professionalism. When a few windows needed better caulking and paint touch-ups, William's painter immediately came back to scrape and recaulk everything perfectly. There were a couple of quick DIY fixes on my end for minor drip line leaks, though in William's defense, these specific Swan Hose Element EZ-Connect Soaker Hoses were a unique system he hadn't used before. We also had a slight communication mix-up regarding the soffit above the demolished patio cover; I requested to "tear it down" but forgot to specify restoring the original soffit layout. Even so, William proactively sent a crew member out to try and clip it back into place for us. Final Verdict If I owned a larger portfolio of rental properties, I would put William on a monthly retainer without hesitation. The company downloads thousands on thousands of phone numbers from an online database and sends unsolicited calls to anybody they can early as 8 AM (even calling businesses and renters on holidays) in order to rope in clients by offering a special free estimate (which is standard practice). If you do choose to accept the free estimate, they will try to overcharge and upsell you on any sort of home remodeling projects you're considering due to the small size of the company. From a worker's point of view, the company will hide information on the jobs you confirm and will threaten your job security once a week if you do not get 2 potential jobs per day. This unfortunately leads to the harassment of many Houston citizens through desperate callbacks for months on end and even giving misleading information about the company's status with the Better Business Bureau. There are cockroaches and bugs living throughout their showroom and the owner, contractors, and most of upper management do not speak English as well. All in all, this company is very unorganized yet uncomfortably persistent when it comes to finding clients and will often overcharge clients who are in desperate need remodeling and do not have time or resources to find a second opinion. If you do come in contact with them or happen to receive an unsolicited call, I strongly suggest finding another contractor to save you from a headache/wasting your time. I would even make sure to block the number because they will not stop calling if you don't.
