Finally got around to trying out Gervasoni's after putting it on my list ages ago--the frog legs caught my eye and my heart and I was so excited to try them! We hadn't made any dinner plans this evening so tonight was the night! Gervasoni's is a great little hole in the wall. The decor is a bit mismatched so the vibe is kind of all over the place but it's still a good time. The staff are all really nice, the service is prompt. It's clean and tidy inside. The food was kind of lackluster though, which is why I can't give it a higher rating. A special appetizer, they had crabcakes this evening. It's important to note that I'm a Marylander, born and bred so I have incredibly strong feelings about crabcakes. I pretty much know to be very cautious about anything offered outside of my home state. The proper ones should be all crab with just enough 'filler' to hold them together. These were the complete opposite. I split the order with my partner and still gave up halfway through an individual cake. They just weren't for me. I had intended to get the frog legs to try them for the very first time in my life but they were all out! My partner got the fish and chip special. We were both surprised to see that the fish weren't beer battered, but it does look like they make them fresh in house instead of frozen and that is very cool! He loved the coleslaw and said it was really good! He also got the limelight cocktail and it was delicious. Strong too, so worth every reasonable penny! I ordered the filet mignon and while cooked to perfect medium rare, it was not a good representation of the the cut itself. It was very fatty, segmented, and was rather tough in spots to cut. I also wish that when our server had asked if vegetables were okay, they had specified that the vegetables were just zucchini. They were large pieces, cooked to be quite mushy, and were greasy. Killer mash and gravy though. Here's the thing: I will be back! I wanna try out the sandwich/salad side of the menu and get a cocktail for myself! And try the desserts! I still have a really good feeling about this place! Just need to find the right entree for me. read more

Tonight was our first time eating here and it won't be our last. This is definitely a hidden gem!! We started with the fried zucchini... this is spears not coins. My husband would've wrestled me for the last one if I didn't say go ahead... lol! I had the calamari steak with rice pilaf and he had the patty melt, adding bacon and mushrooms. Both dinners were amazing! For dessert we had the bread pudding, which is made in house. It was one of the best I've ever had. The service was amazing, glasses never empty, very friendly staff, too. This place is a hidden gem, it has an unassuming look to it, and very simple decor, but the food, the food is amazing. Delicious and generous portions. Our waitress was so quick at making us feel welcomed and her service was amazing. The price point was reasonable for the quality of food offered. The service was horrible and so was the Food I believe this is a health issue because my hamburger patty was not well done the waitress took it back to the cook and instead of giving me a a new hamburger patty, they threw this one back on the grill very unprofessional. We went in on a Friday night at about 7pm. The appetizers were awesome. We had the garlic shrimp and spicy honey chicken and while each was definitely targeted to a specific audience (seafood lovers and spice lovers) they were both fantastic. We also had the prime rib dip and grilled chicken sandwich, and both were very good. Portions were reasonable for the price and we left with leftovers for the kids. Next time we will get the steaks. Waitresses were attentive and in great spirits. The ambiance was romantic and it was a great pick for date night. Very glad we made the effort to find it. On that note: the worst part was finding it. Signage was poor and I actually drive by it twice when trying to find it without GPS. I ended up pulling off the street and that's when I saw the business name written on the side of the building about 120 yards away. read more

My wife and have enjoyed Gervasoni's since they were in Modesto. Prices are, in my opinion, very reasonable. Service is always great, but frankly, we have gotten to know the staff and they are always "on the spot". What really matters is the food! if you want a medium rare steak, you will get a MEDIUM RARE STEAK. For lunch, we just had a hamburger that came with a side And veggie. As a returning customer this time I had the opportunity of sitting at the bar when the restaurant was booked up. At first it was slightly slow but once the bartender attended with us she was great. The party I arrived with was only drinking water and she was on top of his refills. On behave of the food it was wonderful. I had the clam and muscle linguine which was as great as the service. We went to Gervasoni's for the first time since they moved from downtown Modesto. We had reservations. We arrived on time. We were ignored and things went downhill from there. We went and sat at the bar. My wife and I ordered a drink. Eventually, we were seated. I think it was after about 20 minutes. Again the staff rushed by, ignoring us. Finally, a server came and brought us water. After some time the server came and took our orders. At this point I will summarize. Service was poor and very slow. The food was palatable. No one in our party was impressed by their orders. I have to say that we used to go to the former location. The service was terrific. The food was delicious and the ambiance was warm and inviting. We were extremely disappointed by our entire experience. I do not like to give poor reviews but, I am honest. We will NOT be back. read more

We've gone here several times over the years but the quality of the food has diminished greatly. The last 2 times we've gone the French dip sandwiches are 95% fat. It's gross. We brought them home for the dogs. And today the same thing and the fries were over extremely salted. I can understand it's hard to get and keep good help and maybe you get a bad meal once in awhile but this is a lot about the quality of food they start with and what they think is acceptable to serve their customers. There's far too many other places to try. Sorry to cross this off my list. The service was good but after the last 3 tries I don't think it was going to make a difference to tell them about it. read more

I wanted so badly to like this place. The menu looks wonderful, the restaurant has a good atmosphere, and the service was great. The problem is the food quality. We ordered a ton of food at my table, but I am just including the items I remember: Bread and butter: good, tasted better than average. Fried oysters: the breading was not very good and the oysters were cooked from frozen. I liked them more than anyone else at the table because I prefer those big gulf oysters, but others ate half of one and refused to eat the rest, despite most of us being big oyster fans. One of the oysters among our two orders had a strong odor and was left uneaten. Fried zucchini: breading was not very good again, but the ranch sauce was decent and they tasted good enough. I liked these and they were the only item where the breading almost tasted right, partly because it was applied more thinly than on other items, which made it crispier. Sweetbreads: this is something I don't eat, but we shared one order among the table of seven and couldn't eat more than half, so it is safe to say that there were no big fans. Lobster bites: these were almost pretty good, but the breading was a problem. It is just a lousy breading recipe and they use it on everything. Most of our table was sick of the breading from other appetizers, so I ate most of them. Ribeye: they were all out of ribeye *sad trombone sound effect*. Chicken marsala: we didn't order this, but I am adding it to the list because the bartender said it was one of their best dishes. After the meal, two people in my group said they wished they had ordered it instead of what they did order. Shrimp Louie: pretty disappointing. It said Bay shrimp, which are usually kind of boring, but I am pretty sure these were from frozen since they were soggy and too soft. The soggy shrimp definitely hurt the quality. The hard-boiled eggs also had gray yolks since they were overcooked. That little attention to detail is important. If you screw up a 10 cent egg, throw it out and cook it right. Yolks should be yellow and should not have a texture like chalk. Chicken picatta: I didn't eat this, but my partner said it was pretty bad. She peeled off all of the breading and ate part of the chicken, but she mentioned that it tasted like boiled chicken. Maybe it steamed itself inside the breading? Maybe it was pre-boiled? Not sure. Either way, she didn't want to take it home, but another person at our table wanted to keep it so he could feed it to his dog. Rack of lamb: I was expecting them to come out with a tiny little rack, which I often see when a restaurant is trying to keep frugal, but the portion wasn't bad. The main problem was that it wasn't seasoned all that well and came out a little on the tough side. The guy who ordered gave a head wobble when I asked if he liked it, then said it was "just alright." The mint jello was the same recipe my grandma made at Thanksgiving dinner when I was a child, though. I thought it was an abomination then, and I still do. Not sure what person in humanity's history decided that lamb needed an accompaniment of toothpaste-flavored gelatin. Synopsis: I ate so many oysters and lobster bites because nobody else in our group really wanted to, which means I was stuffed at the end of the meal. Most of the food was not very good, but if you like gritty breading on a layer of slimy undercooked breading and seasoned with just salt and pepper, you might think the food is fine. There may be a few dishes that are really good that we didn't order. Maybe they just made a really bad batch of breading that day and figured nobody would notice. My table complained a little as we walked out and we have had conversations about the bad food since, but the service was great and our waiters were so friendly that we felt bad complaining too much and I still left a good tip. You could do worse. You could also do a lot better. Zero out of seven people in my group felt that they had a good meal and two out of seven people said their meal was bad. I really liked the vibe of the restaurant and I hope the food quality gets better because they clearly know that half the equation for a good restaurant is having good staff and creating a comfortable space. The other half is having exceptional food, which I am afraid they don't. I think the breading needs to be fine-tuned and limited to just a couple of dishes. Maybe switch things up and have multiple types of breading so they can pick the one that best compliments the item being breaded. read more

We came to eat dinner for my birthday. The food was delicious. We started off with the complementary bread rolls. For our starters, my wife had a salad and I had the minestrone soup. For our main dishes she ordered the Prime Rib Dip Sandwich with fries. I had the 12oz New York Steak. The portions here are good as we both left full. A group of good friends met for lunch recently at Gervasoni's. None of us had been to this location. I had dined many times at the original location in downtown Modesto years ago. We were seated quickly and Dixon came to take our beverage order. After perusing the menu we began our order. Two had the tuna melt and sweet potato fries and a side salad. One had a bowl of clam chowder. Another ordered the Oriental salad and I had the shrimp Louie with a cup of clam chowder. Everyone enjoyed their lunch. Service was excellent and we all said we would return. Dixon was very kind to take a photo of our group. I plan to bring my husband since he has not eaten there before. There is a definite country vibe which is fine but the music was a little loud for us. No worries, we just talked a little louder. I do wish they were still open on Sunday for brunch.
