While on vacation in northern California, I went river tubing with my girlfriend. Cat, who is with Getaway Adventures, saved our tubing trip. I'll spare you the details on how we got to this point, but Cat had just dropped off some customers at Steelhead Beach on the Russian River. She saw me with my deflated river float and asked if I needed any assistance. I explained, and she offered to try to pump the float for me. We weren't sure if her manual bike tire pump would do the job, but we decided to try. Cat attached the bike pump and started pumping, and we could see it was working, but it was going to take some time. I offered to take over for a while and she agreed. Eventually, we got the float fully inflated and, thanks to Cat, my girlfriend and I were finally able to get on the river. Cat refused to accept payment. She just wanted to help. She asked if we had enough water and although I said we were fine, she insisted on giving me two bottles. She also gave us a sunscreen tube that contained enough SPF-50 sunscreen to fully cover us. Cat was so generous and giving of her time and so friendly, personable, and easy to talk to. Although I did not go on a tour with Getaway Adventures, I am fully confident in recommending them based on my experience with Cat. read more

We did a bike tour in Healdsburg with Tom, and he MADE the trip! So much fun (even if some f-bombs escaped my mouth periodically because of the hills!) He's a total wine nerd, and it starts to rub off a little. Soooooo much fun! We also met some awesome new friends on the ride. For those that are not in hill-shape, you may want to think about working out before, or at least learning how gears on a bike work! Healdsburg and the surrounding country is hilly (at least for those of us that live at flat sea-level)! What an incredible day with Matt on our "Sip & Cycle" your of Calistoga! Matt is knowledgable, personable, and was great with my 8 year old niece. He pointed out interesting sights, picked great (and safe!) routes for us, and was very patient as we wandered the grounds at the different tasting rooms. When my bike met an unfriendly rock and I ended up on the ground unexpectedly, Matt was able to handle the situation without any fuss, which I greatly appreciate. I purchased the Sip N Cycle tour through Living Social, so right off the bat, I knew we were getting a steal (two tours for the price of one!). My friend and I chose to do the Healdsburg tour on July 5th. Tommy Thompson was our guide - not only is he easy going with a lot of great information on the Healdsburg wine scene, he's also a chef. Which = BOMB lunch on the patio at Quivira Vineyards at the end of the day. The bikes were in great shape and were very comfortable and easy to ride. Helmets are required (as they should be), and are also clean and comfy. On our Healdsburg tour, we first stopped at Pedroncelli Winery (free tastings, great Petite Syrah). Next on the list was Family Wineries Dry Creek - a small tasting room that housed wines for many different wineries. Love these kinds of places! Although the tasting was $5 per person, the gentleman was very generous with his pours and the number of tastings he provided to us. We ended up buying a bottle of Philip Stanley Granache, which was oh so drinkable and delicious. Next on the list was Bella Vineyards - what cool caves and grounds! Definitely the most beautiful winery we visited. Again, tastings are either $5 or $10 here, but worth it. Our last stop was at Quivira Winery - my favorite of the four. It is a biodynamic vineyard, and they place emphasis on sustainability and restoring local habitats...how awesome! Their wine is great too - love their Sauvignon Blanc for a refreshing summer wine. Not only were these wineries gorgeous, but the scenery along the entire trip was breathtaking. If you get a chance to do one of these bike tours, I highly recommend checking out Healdsburg - I've tasted all over the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, but nothing has ever been as remote or beautiful as what I experienced in Healdsburg. Tommy has a great rapport with all of the wineries, and the lunch he prepared for us was just perfect - lots of variety (ranging from Thai noodle salad to strawberries to crackers and cheese to cookies), and everything was fresh and flavorful. Plus we got all the cold water we could ever want. He made special accommodations for my friend and I too - he drove us back to our car a little earlier than the rest of the group because we had to get back to San Francisco for a Giants game. Thank you Tommy! We really appreciate your professionalism and going the extra mile to accommodate our schedule. I highly recommend this tour for a scenic wine tasting experience. read more

We took our winery tour with our guide Tom Scott. He was a great tour guide and a great teacher of wines. He took us to 4 wineries. Each winery tasting is $10 per person. Remember to "revisit" a wine that you really like. Wineries are chosen based on what the group likes to drink so be sure to have an idea and Tom will take you where you want to go. There are approximately 400 wineries in the area and he has been to, by Tom's count, to over 200 of them. The bikes are well maintained and the ride is flat. If you have not ridden a bike in a long time be prepared for about 15 total miles of easy riding with maybe 3 to 5 miles between wineries. I would suggest that you not drink too much. Lunch is provided, which was very nice. I definitely recommend this bike tour to round out your vacation or weekend trip. read more

My husband and I so enjoyed the Napa Pedal and Paddle tour. AJ and Jill were our guides and they are awesome! The wineries were lovely and we were given plenty of time for the tastings. The lunch was incredible and difficult to capture in words because you kind of had to be there on that hill overlooking the vineyards. We had a really nice relaxing and fun day on the Peddle & Paddle tour. The morning was a little gray and cool but it warmed up very quickly. What we liked about this tour was that the biking was not along the main roads so there was minimal car traffic. Our guide was J.P., he did a great job, especially since somehow he was our solo guide for the day as the second guide for whatever reason was not available. So our group was unaccompanied at a few points along the way, but it worked out ok. We visited the Robert Young Winery and de Lorimier winery. I'll post separate reviews of these. Lunch was served by our guide at the deLorimier winery and then we walked through the vineyards to start the kayak portion of the tour. The water level was low at a few places but overall it was a nice ride down the river. Tips: Bring a towel and change of dry clothes, maybe even shoes, to change into so you're not wet in your car on the drive home. Also it really does take about an hour to get to the Alexander Valley campground starting site if you're coming from downtown Napa. read more

My girlfriend kept saying, "Best. Vacation. Ever." over and over after we got home. We did three days of cycling. Accommodation were first rate each night at spas and resorts and dinner selections were fantastic. Tommy and Jason were great guides who took amazing care of us on the road, at wineries and at the lunch table (they had a gourmet picnic spread waiting for us each day). We saw tons of microclimates from sunny Dry Creek Valley to the Marine Layer laying over the Pacific Coast Highway. I lost count of the wineries we visited, but they made sure we also got to see redwood forests and a seal nursery at the mouth of the Russian River. We'll be repeat customers! read more

My wife and I did the Carneros Sip & Cycle tour. This Getaway Tour had been recommended by friends and they were absolutely right on. Tommy was our guide and our chef. He arranged for us to tour and taste four winery's in the Carneros region, we biked around 18 miles. We visited a mixture of small intimate winery's and larger operations. Each had it's own charm and all seemed to know Tommy and gave us attentive service. At the second winery Tommy prepared a delicious lunch. His knowledge of the area, wines, and cooking were quite amazing. This tour is a highly recommended way to see the area while getting in a decent outdoor activity. read more

Absolutely loved the pedal and paddle tour. Our guide, Jesse, was very familiar with the Healdsburg area, was organized, innovative, hospitable, and a great photographer. The lunch he made us was top-notch. The two wineries that we visited, Robert Young Estate and deLorimier, were phenonmenal! Great wines and great service. At first, I thought that two wineries wasn't enough, but I'm glad considering the amount of outstanding wines we tasted. The paddle down the Russian River was very peaceful and an experience that not a lot of folks have access to (the entry to the Russian River is wedged between two wineries). It was a great way to 'sober' up and cool down before driving back to our next destination. It was a great way to spend the day. read more

8.5 kayak trip on the Russian River was really fun, and Eric was a great guide! Lots of good nature information, and animal sightings along the way including egrets, turtles, bass, and otters. The food spread at the end was really top notch, and he gave great advice afterwards about where to see redwoods and eat at a taco truck in Guernville. Our Fathers Day adventure this year was kayaking with Getaway Adventures. We had scheduled to kayak from Healdsburg down the Russian River but Tim called us the day before to let us know that construction on a dam was going to require us to change our location to Jenner, where the Russian River meets the ocean. Very glad we made the change! Our guide, Eric, picked us up in Santa Rosa and drove us to the launch point in Jenner, giving us local information and history for all of the small towns and farms along the way. Once on the water, we first kayaked to the mouth of the river to see the harbor seal nursery beaches (from a distance, of course) and then he took us on a hike to show us where the end of "The Goonies" was filmed. After that, back in the kayaks to head upriver for a couple of miles, stopping to watch herons, osprey, and even a large family of river otters. After a few hours on the water, Eric served an excellent lunch and we piled back in the van to head back to Santa Rosa. On the way, he took us to a local farm store to taste jams and jellies (sounds lame, but it was fun, especially for our kids) and get some baked goods. It was a great day. We are already planning to book with them again, next time for a biking/kayaking trip. read more

We had a wonderful day in Carneros with biking, three winery tasting tours and kayaking. Our guide, Dustin, was exceptional and I highly encourage taking one of his tours. The scenery on the bike trail was gorgeous and we loved every minute. We got to visit the Etrude, McKinsey and Ceja wineries and were given the VIP treatment in intimate small group settings. We kayaked 8 miles on the Russian River with Dustin as our guide. Dustin was amazing - personable, funny, engaging, knowledgable - even cheering me on ever so patiently as I tried to steer, occasionally doing exactly the opposite of what I was supposed to do! The scenery was beautiful and Dustin pointed out grey herons and egrets and turtles sunning themselves on rocks and logs. We had a great time. Sip-N-Cycle is a nice way to enjoy the vineyards and scenery up close. It's very different riding a bike through the wine country vs. zooming by the vineyards in a car. Tommy, our guide on the Calistoga Sip-N-Cycle, was personable, fun, and good at checking in with everyone. He did a good job of guiding us primarily on low traffic back roads. We went to four wineries, each with different character. The bikes were nice and in good condition. The lunch they served was lovely. I recommend it. read more

We did the Carneros sip and cycle tour for our second day in Napa. It started off slightly sketchy because the drop off area at cuttings Warf has NOTHING else there and it felt like we were being dropped of in the middle of nowhere, with a beautiful view (granted we arrived about 15 minutes early). We were eventually greeted by our tour guide Tommy who was fantastic. The bikes were very good quality and were the right size. We were with two other couples (one with two children ages 8 and 10 from Germany) which made us a little nervous at first, but it turned out to be no problem whatsoever as they only stayed for two of the four wineries and then left us to do a kayak tour of their own. Our first stop was Etude, picked by Tommy and we were greeted by friendly staff who were expecting us and clearly had a personal relationship with Tommy. Second, we arrived ad acacia. Again, we were greeted by staff who immediately took us to the gazebo for our seated tasting. At this point Tommy left us to go pick up a hand selected lunch from one of the local deli/shops nearby. We had a spread of cheeses, meats, bread, fruit, pasta salads of different kinds, salad and the variety was fantastic. There was more than enough food and it was delicious. After that we headed on our bikes to Domaine Carneros. Again, Tommy went right in and we were promptly seated on the outdoor terrace with a great view and fantastic service (even though the place was very busy when we arrived). Finally, we biked to our final destination a small Mexican-American influenced winery called Ceja. Again, Tommy knew the staff, who were expecting our visit and gave us a personal service experience. Ultimately we did 17 miles on the bike beginning at 9:00AM and ending around 4:30PM. As for the biking: be prepared for hills! (definitely need to wear tennis shoes or closed toed shoes). You MUST wear a helmet (so don't do your hair). Tommy is very cognizant about each individuals bike ability and will stay backs with slower travelers to make you feel comfortable if needed. He also made us feel very safe traveling on some of the roads that were more crowded. You can also stop to take pictures if you like and Tommy will not rush you or leave you behind. We liked this very much and will definitely do it again if we go back to Napa. Both the biking experience and the choice of wineries was fantastic. On a final note, in our wine woozy state we forgot the bottle of wine that we purchased in Tommy's van and he came to the restaurant where we ended up for to eat dinner to bring it to us with no complaints and a smile. read more

My wife and I did the Napa Pedal and Paddle excursion, and overall it was a good experience. The biking was easy, pleasant and our guide was quite helpful instructing my wife about gear changes and other tips. The "paddle" part was disappointing and I wouldn't do it again. You kayak out to the railroad bridge and back to the landing. The river is not scenic, and it was boring and somewhat difficult paddling against the wind and tide. Plus, we didn't have life jackets. While both wineries we visited were nice, we weren't told what the tasting fees were up front (should have made a point to ask I realize now) and fees were not waived with a purchase at one of the places which is unusual in my experience. Our guide took photos of us on the river with his phone, but failed to text them to us despite several calls. I think their prices are steep, however I would do a straight cycling winery tour again, but definitely skip the water. read more

I should have written long ago, but it shows what a great time that we had with our guide, Ken, that it is six months later and my wife and I are still talking about what a wonderful day we had. We cycled through the Dry Creek valley in Sonoma and hit five wineries, each unique, in its own way. Ken took care of everything; transporting any wines we bought, making sure the van was available, and just knowing where to go and what we would enjoy. Even though Zinfandel is the primary grape grown around there (and you'll have opportunities to taste lots), we found plenty of variety including some stellar whites. The picnic lunch our guide provided was excellent; a simple (but not cheap) assortment of really fresh fruits, vegetables, cured meats, cheeses and artisan breads. Just the thing to keep you going, but not weigh you down as you cycle to the next winery. read more

Biking was a beautiful way to see Healdsburg and surprisingly relaxing. We went to two wineries, one of which turned out to be my favorite of the entire weekend. JP is the best bike guide ever! We were on our honeymoon in Napa and JP took us on an amazing full day bicycle tour of the valley. He was funny, relaxing, knows a ton about the area including the people, and even when I got a flat tire, it was a non-event. JP gave me his bike, and raced ahead to the van to make the repair while I kept riding with my wife. This was the highlight adventure for our honeymoon and for any guided tour, the guide can make or break the trip. JP made ours one we will never forget! read more

He was very friendly, courteous, professional, knowledgeable, and had some great stories to share along the way. He was able to gear the ride towards our skill level and made sure we had plenty to eat and drink (both water and wine!). He also knew all the locals at the wineries which made if fun as we were used to stopping in at some of the bigger names out there which can be a little more pretentious.
