To wander into French Market, the lively and lovely sister brasserie to Café Provence, is to step…read moredirectly into a vibrant watercolor painting of community life. Here, the strict, timeless geometry of the Left Bank softens into a warm, sun-lit casual elegance, a neighborhood sanctuary where the hum of local politics replaces the brooding silence of the philosopher's corner. It is a space where the Democratic social scene is always in full, effervescent effect, a kinetic theater of ideas where local strategists, organizers, and policy wonks gather over marble tables to debate the future of the state while tearing apart freshly baked croissants. The air thickens not with existential dread, but with the electric, hopeful prose of a collective striving for progress, making it the definitive salon of the modern suburban landscape. The beauty of French Market lies in this seamless blending of civic passion and culinary delight. Every corner of the room feels curated with a benevolent affection, an atmosphere fueled entirely by a staff that can only be described as thoroughly fabulous. From the front counter to the busy kitchen, the team moves with a synchronized, smiling grace that makes every patron feel like the guest of honor at an intimate neighborhood gathering. They navigate the bustling room with a genuine warmth, pouring drinks and delivering plates with an infectious energy that elevates the casual setting into something truly extraordinary. It is a rare, beautiful thing to find a restaurant where the hospitality feels less like a service industry transaction and more like a generous act of civic kinship. On the plate, the market routinely touches the sublime, offering dishes that sing with a clear, poetic precision. The crab cakes are a revelation of coastal longing, packed with sweet, tender lump meat and boasting a delicate, golden sear that yields effortlessly to the fork. Nearby, the croque madame arrives as an opulent, dripping monument to breakfast-time indulgence, a decadent tower of savory ham and melted Gruyère crowned with a perfectly runny egg that coats each bite in a rich, golden velvet. To wash down these triumphs, one must order the French press coffee, a dark, aromatic brew that arrives in a slow, plunging ritual, delivering a bold, robust punch that commands your full attention and jump-starts any morning debate. While the kitchen operates at a remarkably high standard across the board, a discerning diner must exercise a small measure of tactical restraint when navigating the entrees. For all the brilliance on display, it is best to gently bypass the steak frites for the time being, steering clear of the dish until the kitchen source a more premium quality of beef to match their otherwise flawless standards. But this minor detour is easily forgotten the moment you glance toward the pastry case. The desserts here are an absolute, transcendent poetry of sugar and butter, offering delicate tarts and airy confections that are nothing short of sublime. French Market remains a triumphant, essential neighborhood jewel, where the food is exceptional, the people are magnificent, and the conversation never stops flowing.

The passion fruit coconut water drink (I forgot the name, something including oasis!) was also a refreshing treat in the summer heat. I saw a woman pour a little bit of vinegar into a little paper cup and sip it straight, so in true monkey-see-monkey-do fashion I did the same. My first taste was the White Peach Balsamic. Forget everything you know about balsamic vinegar, stuff this good is on a different plane of existence altogether. Wow! So syrupy and brightly flavored I now understood the glaring lack of bread cubes. Who needs them? The White Peach was like jam. I was instantly thinking of pouring it over ice cream, or ... ? It turned my world upside down. My budget permitted a purchase of just one bottle this trip, but you can rest assured I will be coming back to add to my collection. If you're curious, I chose the Lime Jalepeno Balsamic as my first bottle. All I add is a little oil, salt & pepper and I have a salad dressing that knocks my socks off!

The person assisting me was friendly, knowledgeable, and had a passion for steak. I picked up a couple of the T-Bone steaks. He said they were exceptionally tender and would fall off the bone. As an extra service I was given some of their house rub. I seasoned the steaks with the rub and dry aged them for only 3 hours. I put them on my charcoal grilled, and cooked them medium rare. They were the best steaks I have ever had in my life. They seared perfectly and I will only buy my high end steak from this place in Kansas City from now on!

What makes this place stand out is the concept. You can walk up to the butcher case, pick out your own steak, and have them grill it for you. It's a fun experience that feels different from a traditional steakhouse. If you'd rather order from the menu, there are also plenty of meat and seafood options available. We shared a bone-in ribeye that was absolutely delicious. We started with the Sweet Potato Hummus, which my wife especially loved. The real surprise of the night was the Hot Honey & Goat Cheese Brussels Sprouts. Those were outstanding and easily one of the best sides we've had in a long time. The roasted potatoes, on the other hand, were just okay. Another thing worth mentioning is the deli-style refrigerated cases in the back of the shop. They're packed with prepared meals, sides, meats, and other items that looked genuinely tempting for taking home later. Overall, a very enjoyable first experience and a creative addition to the Kansas City dining scene

Recently they added on a wing around their deli, and it looks a little more suburban than the area but not a total eyesore. Back when I worked down the street from here, and lived nearby, I used to pop in here frequently for beer, wine, and to indulge in their great salad bar. I don't often find myself grocery shopping in this part of town any longer, but when I do I always notice that they still have a great selection of local items, including beer and wine. AND, they still rock a great salad bar. I popped in here most recently thinking I might try one of the waldo take and bake pizzas that I'd heard were rumoured to be available, and was a bit sad that I would have to get thin crust to get any meats on a 'za. Definitely not Cosentino's fault, but that would be an improvement as I'm not a waldo thin crust fan. At any rate, I think you'll find most of what you need here at a somewhat reasonable price. I'd put prices somewhere in between whole foods and price chopper. While you might pay a little more than going down the street to Price Chopper, you'll find a cleaner shop, and tons more local options, which I always enjoy. Now that I live a little bit further out I find visiting this grocery store to be a bit nostalgic, and I enjoy seeing what little treasures I can find if I find myself here.

To have this exquisite sanctuary within mere walking distance of our front door feels like discovering a secret coordinate on an old traveler's map. It is a place that exerts an irresistible pull, anchoring itself as the absolute perfect destination for an intimate, romantic date night or a lively, laughter-filled evening meeting up with friends. There is a brilliant, transportive alchemy at work here, transforming a casual stroll through our neighborhood into a deliberate departure from the ordinary, where the modern world gently recedes into the background. The atmosphere is utterly on point, evoking the hauntingly beautiful, slow-burning elegance of a French colonial-era brasserie tucked away in the humid heart of Southeast Asia. There is a distinct, poetic nod to the writing of Joseph Conrad within these walls--a deliberate, masterful play of light and shadow that makes the space feel alive with a quiet, brooding mystery.
