Wonderful selection of Russian, Bulgarian, Polish, Byelorussian, Greek, Turkish, Lithuanian, Slovakian, and other European goods, from pork sausages to feta cheese and a huge array of sweets along the spectrum. If you don't read Cyrillic or Greek, make sure to take a Russian or Greek speaker along with you, else use your common sense and/or ask lots of questions -- even the stupidest of questions are welcomed and answered with courtesy. read more

I had no idea there was a brilliant little Eastern European grocery store tucked away in this shopping plaza. We happened to be eating nearby and decided to stop in to check the place out. When you walk in you immediately greeted with a huge island of candy. Obviously it's candy you'd find in Eastern Europe, so the labels are not in English and the packaging designs are way better than anything you'd find in the states. You grab a bag and fill it up with whatever catches your eye. Prices range from $4.99 to $9.99 a pound. If you need to know what the ingredients are you can ask at the counter and they'll help translate for you. 99% of it is chocolate based. You really can't go wrong. My family had a blast picking out some treats to take home. They have a huge selection of dry good and canned groceries. If your looking for an obscure ingredient chances are you can find it here. Lots of pickled veggies, grains, pastas, chips, crackers, cookies, and other things I was totally clueless about are abundant here. There is a refrigerated and freezer section in the back. It had so many products I was overwhelmed. They also have a deli case up front with meats and cheeses. My husband was thrilled when the guy working asked if he'd like to sample anything from the meat case. Cured meats are the way to his heart, so he definitely said yes. The guy was more than happy to let him sample anything and told us no pressure to buy, just try it. Can't argue with that. We did end up buying about a half pound of various meats. It's all reasonably priced considering this is a specialty grocery store. In addition to food they also sell books, toys, dvds, and cds all from Eastern Europe, of course. We are enjoying our deli choices! Polanski cheese is wonderful, zervistaya salami to die for, and I splurged on some salmon roe! We stocked up on black currant juice and jam, and are excited about the the frozen dumplings too. It's a clean shop, and there are so many different items to try... we'll be back soon. read more

Today was my grandmother' birthday and I wanted to eat a few Jewish culinary standbys in honor of her day. KC has a serious lack of Jewish eateries (can I get a Kosher deli up here?) so my husband and I thought we'd give European Delights a try, on the off-chance that Eastern European might be close enough. We arrived at the store and were immediately greeted by the nice woman behind the counter. My husband explained our mission (I couldn't, as I was more than a little verklempt) and she so sweetly helped us find some Grandma-reminiscent options. We wandered around the store, she told me about her Grandmother and pretended not to notice as I cried and snotted my way through the frozen aisle. I could not be more grateful for her kindness. As for the store itself, European Delights is sparklingly clean and way fun to explore. Fantastic selection of candies, and off-beat items. We were able to try a few samples of the merchandise, much appreciated for folks not too familiar with some of the offerings and sadly, not fluent in any Slavic languages. We were able to find a ton of items that looked intriguing to try and speak from experience when we say that the hamemtaschen are sublime. There are some crazy delicious smells emanating from my oven right now, thanks to the stuffed cabbage. My real takeaway from European Delights, however, is how wonderful the owner was and how she helped me connect a little with my Grandma on a day I sorely needed it. Thank you so much! read more

I cannot believe I did not come across this place sooner. European Delights has a name that doesn't really express what it is - a Russian culinary store. The only Russian store that I'm aware of in KC metro. In my teens, the Russian population just exploded where I grew up and that meant stores to supply the population. We had a huge Russian supermarket open up a few blocks away - one of the first. I learned the products and the food became part of my background. So I've been missing some of it. European Delights has enough to satisfy your basic Russian needs and then some. They have the different deli meats, a variety of cheeses and smoked fish (whitefish, cold trout, hot trout, salmon) that I'm used to getting only at the Russian markets, pickled vegetables including the only pickles in this whole damn metro that don't disgust me, a number of caviars and more. You've got to try the farmer's cheese (slightly sweet and a cross between cottage cheese and cheesecake). They even have it in snack formats, covered in chocolate with fruit in the center. Try their cakes too (shipped in from Chicago and Brooklyn). They are very tasty - less sweet than American cakes with more rum to make up the flavor. Everyone that tries them seems to love them. They also have a nice selection of chocolate filled with alcohol. The people that run this place are really good about explaining stuff to you if you don't know what stuff is. At least I think since I'm familiar with most things there. They will let you sample certain things there. I really want to give this place 5 stars and I guess it deserves it for being the only Russian store in the whole metro and fairly decently stocked at that. I just cannot since I'm so spoiled but what it truly could be and sticker shock. It's not really pricy for what they sell but I'm just used to paying less for the same items. This is a nice little grocery. I wish I came here more often, because the owners are so nice and helpful, they deserve a lot of business, and the products are great. But I usually show up twice a year, for Norwegian Constitution Day (May) and Christmas. Because that's when I need smoked fish, and pickled fish, and hard dark rye bread, and farmer cheese, and caviar. I make do all year (shame on me) with pickled herring from Hen House, but on these holidays I get salt herring to pickle myself, and it's always lovely. They have many kinds of deli smoked fish, salmon and sable (ohh that's good but expensive) trout etc. I got a beautiful smoked trout today, only $8 a lb, and couldn't wait for christmas morning, had some for dinner, it was very good, from some company in NY. They have salmon roe caviar and cod roe and so on, lots of russian and eastern european sausages. They have wonderful pickles - cucumber, tomato, carrot, sauerkraut, all refrigerated, not canned. And a huge section of european candies and chocolate. The staff is russian, or eastern european perhaps, and anyhow not outgoing, but if you ask for info or help they are so very nice and helpful, show you everything and explain what you are buying, or help you find what you want even if you don't know what it's called. Man - there is nothing more odd than a complete throwback to Russian culture, food, music, dolls actually setting up shop in one of the most dead strip malls in Kansas (somewhere off of Antioch). And coming from Al Habashi's Middle Eastern market the other day (a dark and grungy-looking place, as much as I enjoyed it) I was shocked at how clean and airy and bright the store was. Of course, I didn't understand a word spoken - everything was in Russian, of which I know only little: What is your name? My name is wolf. No thank you. Goodbye. (I had a class in 3rd grade and our teacher used a wolf puppet to teach us...I don't know why I remember any of it at all...strange...) And I was steadily ignored (and I think even laughed at by the cashier) as I looked through the small market and found items like: cases of traditional Russian wooden dolls, Russian Cosmo and other magazines and newspapers, strange herbs that 'eliminated tobacco and alcohol breath!' I found tons of bologna in the meat cases and imported cheeses, kringles and cakes, teas, jams, calendars of Moscow, an entire aisle of little mysterious candies. And the bast thing about the store? Tatu was playing on the TV on repeat - maybe the only Russian singers I know, and they were on! Love it - an experience you can't have anywhere else in KC - I'll venture to guess, which is why I can award it no fewer stars than four (anything rare is worth a good review). read more

Always check the "best by" date in this store. I looked at several items (dairy products...even an entire stack of cookies) and they were passed their BB date. I notified whom I assumed is the owner. He looked at the dairy products then left them on the shelves for any current customer in the store to purchase. *blank stare* In a couple of cases he tried to tell me that the month of the BB date was listed first, i.e. 06/02/16. Knowing that European dates typically list the day first I asked him to prove it was indeed the month instead of the day. He said he got a new shipment the previous day and he'll bring me another container. He comes from the back of the store with a product with another date - 12/04/16. That doesn't prove which number is the month nor the day. I needed to see something with a 13 or higher just to put my mind at ease. Since there were items that he left on the shelves that he acknowledged were passed the BB date, he came off as a shyster just trying to sell a product. I can't say that I'll go back but if I do, I'm definitely checking the BB date. read more

Yum! A Russian Market!!! Ok Russian refrigerator pickles are a bit of an obsession of mine.... what am I saying! Pickled things are a bit of an obsession of mine! And they of course have very very good homemade pickles. And you need these pickles to drink vodka in the traditional Russian way (pickles and black bread both available here). They have a good selection of low to medium end sturgeon caviar which is always a fun dinner party offering without breaking your wallet. Of course the array of goodies cannot be done justice in a review, so go down and check it out, try something new and have a fun night in with goodies from European Delights. read more

My experience not been so great. Service was horrible if not say not at all. Two people behind the counter and line is not moved at all. I agree about assortments of the food , but majority of diary products is expired. Huge variety of candy. But chocolate is hard and white , which is first sign of not fresh for long time. Almost hour I spend there to finally go to check out point , people still talk and talk. You as a Customer staying on the side and nobody care, because you do not speak Russian?! It had been a while since I went to European Delight, but it's still delightful. If you're looking for the foods of Eastern Europe, this is your spot! Lots of imported sausages from the Eastern bloc, pickled goodies for zakuski, candies, cheeses, smoked fish, caviar, etc. I was looking for tvorog (the Slavic name for farmer's cheese, also called quark in Germany and fromage blanc in France). It's a product that's mysteriously hard to find in the U.S. I don't know why it hasn't caught on here because it's used in just about any way cream cheese can be used, but it's MUCH lower calorie! The store has a couple of brands in a number of different styles. I also picked up an inexpensive jar of cod roe which can be used to make taramasalata or just eaten as an appetizer. As usual, many items are labelled in Cyrillic, but if you pick it up there will be a sticker with the name in English, the ingredients and the nutrition info. If it's not there, ask the person at the counter -- they're friendly and helpful. If you can't find what you're looking for here, try Taste of Europe at 135th and Metcalf, which also specializes in Eastern European goodies. Between these two stores you'll be able to find virtually anything you might be shopping for! read more

It would be a misnomer to call it "European Delights" in the sense that most people would understand it. The store has a very heavy Eastern European slant to it. That said, I can't say I didn't like anything. I particularly like the cold cut selection. The owner clued me into a selection of semi-sour pickles and sauerkraut that was best I've ever had outside of New York City. All in all, it's worth a shot if you like to experiment and try new things. read more

I really enjoy this place but there are a few things you need to keep an eye on. First, do not let multiple cashiers ring your purchases up because I ended up paying 20 dollars more than I needed to at an already expensive store due to a second career rescanning items. Second, check the expiration date of dry goods because you might be purchasing an either already expired product or one that will expire in the next few days. Next, do not mix differently priced candy as you will most likely be charged 9.99/LB if one piece of 9.99/LB is in an entire bag of 6.99/LB. The only reason I used to go to this place was for their awesome sausages but last time I went, the guy sold me close to expiration sausage with a smile on his face. I tasted a slice at the store, it was great. Came home with the half of the whole sausage I have bought, had some with bread and thought it smelled a tiny bit of something funky. 3 days later, the sausage smelled soo disgusting, I knew he sold me something that had gone bad. So terrible of those people!!! They only care about the money and will sell you anything. Needless to say I havent been back for a couple months now and not sure if I ever will again! read more

The best place in Kansas to get authentic European produce. Very friendily staff who will help you find anything; they told me if i pick a country in Europe there will be a product from there! I love the cheese and juice selections, my favorite thing to get is Pelmeni (Russian dumplings). Like this place so much! And not only because I am a Russian and live in US not so long time and of course missing my native food. Firstly - here is a great assortment of REALLY European Delights (the same chocolate bar that you buy here, you can easily find in every regular Russian store From Moscow to Vladivostok), second - it's a good composition of food that really give you opportunity pretty easily prepare native Eastern Europe food in you kitchen (borsh, sshi, golybci, plov etc.) Actually only here I can find necessary ingredients to cook traditional Russian dishes for my wonderful American, who opened for me this store and as me, almost every day enjoy taste of European Delights! By the way, I wanna give a good advice for all Americans who only starting open the world of European meals, as a behavior try a non-alcohol drink KVAS (my hubby prefer "Monastyrsky" - with a picture of a monk at the label, I like "Nikola" - try them both). And for all persons who likes salmon roe (sometimes we Russians calls it "fish eggs", it's a joke :)) try roe of another fish, like cod and pollock - smoky or regular, it's pretty cheap but I guarantee you will impress! No matter how you will eat it, we eat that roe just spread on white bread, very delicious! read more
