The weak response from the Sprague company is typical of horrible experience I had just trying to get an estimate from this company. There is nothing complicated about replacing 8 slates to a side roof. You do need a manlifter. I was giving Sprague the benefit of the doubt by taking the $400 manlifter price. I called three companies. The average manlifter price was $250 per day. I got four estimates for the slate replacement work. The next highest bid was $1750 for replacing the 8 slate including the price of the manlifter. Stay away from GF Sprague with their rip off prices. read more

I called GF Sprague to get a free estimate for my condo building's roof. Bob Scribner came to do the estimate, and told me that we likely needed a new roof. However when I asked for the estimate, he told me that he would not give it to me without all other condo owners present. I assured him that I am acting as a representative of the condo and have full authority to hear the estimate, but he refused, stating that GF Sprague does not give estimates, but full proposals that they will only give to the entire condo association. I'm not sure if he wouldn't speak to me because I am a young woman in charge of her condo association and he did not respect my authority, or if he is equally dismissive of all condo associations, but I strongly advise against scheduling a "free estimate" from this company for anything. read more

We contracted G.F. Sprague for 2 leaking skylights and one problem area of our roof after the installation & replacement of our entire roof by a roofer. It was less than a year after the installation when I notified them of the problem areas and that was the last successful contact. In finding a roofer to do our repairs, it was very important to find one that would quickly made the leaks stop and stand behind their work for the life of the roof. G. F. Sprague has been in business for over 40 years with the owner, Jerry Sprague still actively involved, and that meant a great deal to us. We were very pleased with the response time of our initial call and the extra time Jerry took to explain how a roof operates properly. I could not be happier with the quality of workmanship G. F. I called GF Sprague because I have see them doing work in Newton for years. I didn't hire them because of the extremely high pressure sales tactics used. The owner is way too aggressive. I continued to get calls for months from his sales team. Based on the owners response to a previous review (owner didn't address high pressure sales) he doesn't get it. He would have more customers if he wasn't so aggressive to the point of being rude. I wanted to throw him out of my house but I didn't want to make a scene. I would never recommend him. Their process is flawed - hard, hard sell, and they're persistent - and their pricing ... oh please. $69,650 quoted (plus "investment" grade suggested upcharges) on a job I've now had completed for $32,000 by Power Construction (on time, politely and flawlessly.) I see that others reviewing this company have had similar experiences and I can't fathom how they've stayed in business - perhaps because most people don't have a clue what a new roof on an expensive home should cost so figure it's safest to go with a name you see about town. This company will come to your house, inconvenience you with a hour long presentation during which they will not discuss any pricing and instead focus on how great the company is and the history of the company and how high grade they are. My favorite is how they were recommending a roof replacement when not even having gone up to the roof to look at the problem we were having. All these guys want is the big ticket and to make you get bought into it by wasting so much of your time on their pitch that you give in by the time they are done. We had a water leak in our two year old home, and I called GF Sprague for a quote, based on their good reviews on Google. We had a very good experience. After a nice chat with Linda, she scheduled Mark to come to our home in Wellesley. The day before he was due to come, I heard back from our builder, and he agreed he would be responsible for the roof repair. I called GF Sprague to cancel, since I knew I would not be hiring them. I spoke to Al, and he suggested I keep the appointment, and that way we'd have a second opinion (to hopefully confirm what builder planned to do). That seemed like a good idea, so I agreed to keep the appointment. Mark came at the beginning of the two hour window, and was very professional. He diagnosed the problem quickly and explained it clearly. I was pleased with the visit, and appreciated the fact that he was willing to come out, even though we were planning on our builder doing the repair at their expense. I feel obligated to write this so others do not waste their time with this company. This is a saga so get comfortable or see the cliff notes at the bottom. I inquired online then got a call, was asked many ?s but as soon as I said "Roslindale,"- suddenly they would not be able to send someone. WHY waste my time? Days later Ernie left VMLs (didn't know someone had already called me?) so I called back. I didn't use the "R" word & despite a noticeable hesitance, ~1 week later, Joe came to the house. He talked at length about how great the company was and said that he would have to meet the other owner, BEFORE even mentioning the job. I said that I was the person to whom the invoice should be made and that the other owner was away. Only after seeing the overflow of mail did he FINALLY back down. The only way to get the estimate was to meet him again which he couldn't do until ~ 2 weeks later. The week of our mtg., the co. cancelled our appt. but could reschedule...~2 weeks later. Really? Ernie offered 10:00 the day after Xmas. Thanks but no thanks. Mark came a few days after Xmas...and here's where it gets truly remarkable. Mark came at the correct time but made me suffer through a PPT presentation of how great the company was. He finally got to the estimate - price page (plus 6 other sheets that he did NOT review, no detail of materials used, etc.). Mark then gave me the price of the entire roof DESPITE my having JUST TOLD HIM (& Joe before) that I wanted only the front done now & the entire roof this Spring. I asked for that price and took notes (thankfully) & had him write that cost on the estimate. He did but when I saw it, it was literally $2,566 more than what he had JUST TOLD me. Not a mis-key and not even close to what I was quoted. He didn't "know how that happened." I do. I asked for the estimate & he ONLY gave me the price sheet b/c they do "not normally give the entire thing." I insisted on getting it but WTH are they hiding? IF YOU: 1. Want to be disrespected, condescended to, treated like you, the home owner, have no intelligence, 2. Believe that your time and effort have zero worth, 3. Can be told anything & will not question it, and 4. Will pay top dollar... Sprague is the company for you. read more

He came as planned, spoke with me for a few minutes and went on to look around and measure what they needed for the quote, telling me he'll come back to discuss the project. I have gotten many quotes over the past year for a lot of major projects, and it was the first time i'm not just getting the estimate mailed or emailed. be it. A few weeks went by, and I heard nothing so i called to hear they left me a voicemail (that I never got and have have no trace of). I requested the quote, and was told that they don't send out quotes, i need to schedule a time for Mark to come back. On the day of his visit, 7/23, he arrived at the scheduled time, came in, looked around, asked where was my husband and just said he won't talk to me unless my husband was present. Are we back in 1950? did I miss the memo that women cannot make decision about house business? no one mentioned over the phone that my husband needed to be present, and if they did they would have heard that he is busy and would not make time for this. Mark left, and i will probably never see that quote. I may be a woman but i know far more about home repair than my husband. i have a checkbook, and have signed a lot of contracts for a lot of far more extensive work on the house. I made countless decisions without him ever questioning them when it comes to this kind of issues. Mark said it was about communication, and to avoid getting disputes later. he also said that he would need both our signature on the contract so can't talk to me if i'm alone. Maybe he has never heard of someone not signing a contract right in front of him right when presenting a quote? The only other stories of businesses requiring both spouses to be present i've heard are in the cases of shady high-pressure sales tactics, and according to some other reviews I read (after the fact unfortunately) it seems that's what was about: sign now or loose a big virtual discount. Unless it was about my gender? I'm not sure what's worse. But moreover, they charge a ton for 'emergency service' where they only "TRY" to fix the problem. Long story short, we spent over $700 and still have zero improvement in our situation. I contacted GF Sprague to remove ice dams that had formed on the front of my home. I was told they would send a team of two guys for two hours at a fixed cost. I got a confirmation call the day before they arrived, which was good. They showed up on time with two workers and a supervisor. The supervisor told me they'd be working for 1.5 hours because it was a 3-man team. He said the team "works faster when a supervisor is there." I watched them do much of the work. The supervisor stayed on the ground, sometimes in his truck, occasionally instructing the two workers on where/how to proceed. The crew left after an hour and a half with the ice only 3/4 of the way removed from my roof. Though I was home the whole time, there was no knock on the door to tell me they were leaving or acknowledge they had not finished the job. I contacted them to complain and received a follow-up call the next day. The person I spoke with said that because it was a 3-man team, the 1.5 hours was getting extra time (3x1.5=4.5) instead of a 2-man team for the full two hours. He offered to send another team out to finish the job, but said he'd have to charge me again. I'm giving two stars because the company has been very responsive, despite being busy with a large volume of ice removal customers. However, I do not appreciate being short-changed 25% of the work I agreed to pay for. I would not use this company again. read more

We've used GF Sprague for two roofing needs. The work they did has been totally satisfactory. As with most roof repairs, we won't know for a few years how well the repair lasts. The first repair was for a shed roof. They lost the request and estimate. When I called to ask why they hadn't come to do the work, they immediately responded with a person who has to be one of their best: Paul. Great job and he had a sense of humor too. The second repair of part of a mansard roof looks good and hopefully will wear well. I will use then again if needed. read more

Sprague did work on our gutters as well as our chimney. The guys were kind, reliable, and did a really great job. We had a bunch of back-and-forth initially with what needed to be done and what would have been "optional" at this time, but everything went very smoothly once we had the contract set. Special thanks to Sean O'Connor! All I needed was my broken weathervane removed, so I started by calling these guys and they came out the next day to give me a quote. After I explained the situation, Sean told me that this small of a job wasn't really in their wheelhouse but he offered to hop on the roof to take a look to see if it would come out easily. I had the same exact experience as Daniel G. I feel that I got an even worse deal though in that I stayed initially to tell the workers the specific area I needed cleared to prevent further leaks in my house, but they didn't even touch that area! Instead they removed about 20% of snow from my roof and that was it! Since I had to leave for work, I question that they even stayed for the 90 minutes they said they would be working. When I called the next day to question the poor quality of work done for my $900 "Bob" the "production manager" called me to discuss and said he would get back to me but never did. I wish I had read the Yelp reviews beforehand - instead I went on a recommendation from a friend who clearly had a better experience. This company after pressuring me to sign a tablet contract that I had no access to until I signed .Then they would then deliver it to me by email. He held the tablet the entire time. It gave me limited access to seeing the contract. I told him I was uncomfortable signing but he assured me that he would not RUN my card for one week, giving me time to get other quotes. He told me it would hold the price and my place on the list for service. (ridiculous ) . He ran my card the next morning . Immediately I called and cancelled sent 4 emails , 4 calls, and was told it would be removed and yet a week later it IS still on my card. Not to mention they were 13K higher in price than 4 other companies that quoted me. They are unethical and deceitful. More concerned with high power sales pitch and wasting your time. We had to have a section of roof replaced last fall because of rotted sheathing. The repair involved shingles, sheathing and some blocking of the rafters. The crew showed up 6 or 8 weeks late and blamed it on the rainy weather. I was on the roof blowing out my gutters a month after the crew was gone and discovered that the peak had not been capped. Inasmuch as final payment was forcefully requested the day after the crew had left a month earlier, I felt that Sprague is more concerned with the money than the quality of the work, which only took 1/2 day and was extremely expensive ($7,000.00). I would not ever use them again without getting 2 competitive bids, and would withhold final payment until I put a ladder on the roof and walked the job. I found some nails in my driveway (which was used as a staging area) and am disappointed with that as well. read more

Jim from G F Sprague Roofing did repairs on our chimney. The work is first rate. He arrived on time, put down tarps to protect the cellar stairs, and cleaned up well after he finished. He seemed very efficient. Bob (Manager) was very helpful. He came to the house to make sure the job was set up properly and returned the next day to inspect the work, sign off on its completion and ask if we were satisfied with the work. We would definitely hire G F Sprague again. The are trustworthy, provide skilled workers, and are great at customer service. read more

GF Sprague has been maintaining our slate roof for almost 40 years. They just finished replacing some slates, a practice which we have followed every other year for many years. We have had the original roof all 40 years we have lived here and never have had a leak or other serious problem. The work crew today Jake Pedro and Nino Lombardo were up to Sprague standard which is very high. If you have a slate roof or any roof, I don't think you can find a more competent roofer in this area. We use Sprague to keep our slate roof in tip top shape. Upkeep on a slate roof is expensive no matter who does the work, but Sprague has a good knowledgeable team, great customer service and does the job right, with a warranty. I hired Sprague for a considerably large project to my mansard roof: replacement of slate, repair of slate, installation of ice shield, and structural work to the mansard gutter system and soffit. I was very pleased with the professionalism of the crew and particularly with Paul. I was updated daily on progress and any issues that cropped up. The crew showed up when they said they would and cleaned up everyday before leaving the site. I had a couple of post-job issues with the drainage system which were promptly addressed. Overall, the experience was very positive. I would give Sprague my highest recommendation. read more

The only reason this is a 4-Star instead of a 3-Star review is because of the roofer that showed up to do the work, James Mitchell. In considering how to structure this review I see it fair to evaluate the 2 GF Sprague employees I dealt with separately. My first contact was with Mark Vaccaro. He was on-time, seemed very knowledgeable and was professional and courteous. Unlike another reviewer I did not experience any pressure to sign any papers or give a check right away. In fact, Mark came out to assess the job more than once before I signed any papers. My problem, though, is that the job turned out to be about $300 more than the estimate given because it required more field slate than originally quoted. As one can imagine I was not happy to hear this news but the work needed to be done. My second contact was with James Mitchell. He was very professional, personable and made an extra effort to coordinate his schedule with mine, as the job took longer than planned because of the estimate. He worked diligently and ensured that any concerns I had were addressed in a professional manner. He informed me of some gutter issues and trouble spots on the house that need to be addressed when the weather improves and took the time to explain what the scope of the work he was doing. I think it's important for people that are working on your home to treat it as their own and I certainly got that feeling from Mr. Mitchell. read more

I needed to replace some basement windows which were of the original single pane variety. Past good experience with Sprague's gutter work required that one of my three quotes be from them. While Sprague's quote was marginally higher than both others, it was clear that the quality of their replacement windows was higher than the competitors' and I was familiar with their quality workmanship. So I opted for them and was not surprised at the timeliness and quality of the job they performed. They were efficient, clean, and knowledgable about working in confined concrete window bays. the roof repair job -i shingle about 3 feet long and 4 rows didn't even last a year and no offer of warranty to fix it. instead, they said they should do the whole one side of the roof which is pretty brand new under 4 years old. the chimney they repointed and installed a screen leaked rain water. the guy who came said he'll come back to look at it. 3+K dollars for that was a waste. i wish i've found this site before i hired them. read more

I would not use Sprague Roofing. We bought a home that had the roof replaced a couple years prior to our purchasing it. During a bad storm we noticed a small issue with two gutters that we wanted fixed before winter and I called them. I was told by Mr. Sprague that they would not come out to fix the issue until a salesman came first and inspected everything at the home because they don't know what kind of work was done in the past. I pointed out that they did the work and that I did not want to sit with a salesman who would offer an upcharge. They also said they needed all the "decision makers" present and asked if I was married. We found a nice roofer to come out and attend to the issue in a polite and courteous fashion. read more

jan. 2018 do not even think of using this disengenuos roofing comany. came home at 5 pm on nov. 29, 2017 to find roofers who do not speak engish on my roof in the dark..no flood lites, no harnesses, no nothing. tried to hack into my visa for final payment. i pd them $5,000 up front for a deposit in sept. very sneaky. i called visa and since i have a+++ credit not to give them a cent. i always pay my final bill from my credit union with a cert. check. arlington bldg inspector was also useless. seemed to be taking the side of roofing company. without me present he and mark vaccaro of said company ran around my house without my present. here is the best part. i only needed a new roof as my roof was 30 yrs old and had leaking ceiling in the kitchen with large shards of cement falling....plus i had shingles off the roof and had ice dams in the past in my tv room. when the job was 'supposedly' done kitchen ceiling still leaving with large shards of cement falling. i do not have any problems with leaking pipes in my home. my home is well maintained all the time. keep sending bills via email....i don't think so. then they send a bogus bill thru the mail which was handwritten and trying to get $350.00 extra from me for bldg permit. the bldg permit 'is included with the contract. i am very smart and hard to fool. do not use this company elly, arlington jan. 8, 2018 read more

Believe all of the negative reviews. I wish I read them before hiring this company to work on our slate roof. Their policy of meeting with "both members of the couple" is wacky and out dated. They use "hard sell" techniques to strong arm you sign with them, and their leaving "hidden" costs out of the initial contract is unscrupulous. Check out Better Business Office on line for law suits if you don't believe me. Our salesman acted like we deeply hurt his feelings when I said we didn't have time for the silly powerpoint presentation of their company. He said it was "the first time" any couple objected to their policy. What a joke. They grossly overcharged us for replacing some flashing on our roof. The work performed was average, and they needed to return to adjust some sloppy work. The reason for 2 rather than 1 star is that they showed up when they said they would, and did complete the work, though sloppily. They wanted an additional $2,000 for additional work that they said was not included in the original quote. We passed. We will look elsewhere for any future work on our roof. read more

Hal Davis promises the world and then delivers very little. Prices are thirty to forty percent higher than comparable services. If you have a problem, Hal disappears. Takes lots of phone calls and certified letters to effect any follow through on service claims. read more
