The family is currently on the West Coast and the memorial would be in the Chicago suburbs. Melissa Nelson was patient and compassionate as I called for information regarding a death half way across the country. She provided details on what Meadows could provide and also offered alternative solutions for us which wouldn't even result in revenue for her. To me, this is a sign of a true professional looking out for the best interests of the client. She also made any expenses that might be incurred very clear as she understands that many times families aren't prepared for the expense. Ultimately, due to size constraints, we were unable to use Meadows, but I absolutely recommend Meadows Funeral Home and Melissa.

Very positive experience with Tom Eccles and the entire Memory Gardens staff…read more My mother passed in March of this year, and we elected to have her cremains buried next to my father, who was buried there back in 1972. As my mother's only surviving son, I haven't lived in suburban Chicago for over 30 years, but do recall my father being buried there many years ago. With little to go on, a call to Memory Gardens put me in touch with Tom Eccles, who could not have been more helpful. Tom was able to look-up my father's records and found the plot where he was buried, and advised my mother had purchased a plot next to his when he died. I made all the arrangements long distance with Tom, got all the paperwork signed and delivered via eMail. He was very helpful in the design of her headstone and had it ready at the grave site for the burial of her cremains last week. Given the passage of time, we had no contacts with the church we used to belong to, and Tom put me in touch with a local minister who delivered a nice, thoughtful graveside service for my mother, whom he had never met, and chose some very thoughtful words for his service based on her obituary. Pouring rain last Friday when we did the service, and Tom had arranged a tent graveside for my wife and I to be under for the service by Pastor Tom. Could not have been more pleased with the services of Tom Eccles and the Memory Gardens staff, all completed via eMail and a few telephone calls between us, over the course of 5 months, for the arrangements. And despite what others have written, we found the condition of the grounds at Memory Gardens very good. grass recently mowed and trees/shrubs nicely trimmed, despite the rainy conditions on the day of her burial. Highly recommend Memory Gardens as the final resting place for your loved ones, and in particular, Tom Eccles as our counselor throughout the process.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Before his passing, we had an initial visit with Michael regarding plot selection and he was helpful with helping us pick the location that best met our needs. No pressure, just a friendly visit and discussion. After he passed, we then worked with Sherry and Arlene to purchase the plot, casket, vault, shroud, death certificates, etc. The cost was substantial, but I imagine it is likely in line with other Jewish cemeteries in the area. Included in the cost is perpetual care of the grounds so there are no additional fees down the road. The chapel for his service was very nice and all of the people working there that day were super friendly. They live streamed his service which many in my family used. They also provided the ability to download the service which I decided to do. Shalom Memorial received the death certificates a few days afterwards from the village and we picked them right away so we could begin sending them to those who needed them. I really can't think of anything that I didn't like or was disappointed in.

The cemetery is always smaller and quieter than I expect, every single time. It's just a patch of grass, a few leaning stones, and a few trees, but standing here I feel the weight I walked in with begin to loosen. The people buried here lived ordinary lives just like mine - they worked, worried, loved, and died - and their presence makes my own problems feel less urgent, more like my life becomes part of a longer story when I allow it to intertwine with theirs. The ground under my feet is solid but uneven, the trees' roots weaving silently beneath the graves, and the quiet lets me breathe more deeply, slow my pace, and notice small sounds: a bird that always seems to be there, a creaking branch from the gaggle of gnarled trees that tries to protect them from the parking lot, the whisper of tires on pavement. I don't have to solve anything here; I just have to stand, let my shoulders drop, and remember that even though I'm nearing the end of my time in this life, I am still able to choose how to carry what I'm holding. When I turn back toward the gate, the world outside hasn't changed, but I've shifted enough to move through it a little lighter, knowing this small, still corner will be here whenever I need to reset again.
