Finally got to come here on a Saturday night. They were very busy, but still had our table ready when we got there. In order to get a table here you have to call at least two weeks to a month in advance for a reservation. We started off with the fried mozzarella and prosciutto, it was very tasty. We each had a blood orange martini and they were very potent yet flavorful. My friend had the swordfish special with risotto and he said it was some of the best fish he has had. I ordered the duck special with kale. It was one of the best dishes I have had in Birmingham. It was extremely flavorful and components all worked together so well. I cannot get enough of this place. This past visit we were given a free appetizer on the house because of our wait time. We got the the fiocchi fresh pasta purses stuffed with pears, Gorgonzola, and walnuts. It was soooo amazing. The dish was sweet, but was complimented by the cheese. We came here because of the great reviews this place had. We were in town for work and when we arrived we were asked if we had reservations. We did not as we didn't know we needed it. The place was pretty full and we were told they would try to accommodate us. Sure enough they did not disappoint. Within 10 min we were seated. This place serves amazing food, has great ambience and the staff is very friendly and attentive. My friend had the penne vodka with sausage and it was amazing. I had the chicken parmigiana and it was very good. The only con here was the 3.5% charge for paying with a credit card so be prepared with cash to avoid this charge. Our friends planned for us to come to Gianmarco's when we visited so we could check out the wine shop/bar. I like wine and food so I was in! Basically this place is a restaurant out in the middle of a neighborhood. Literally, I thought we were going to roll up in someone's living room. The building in front is the restaurant, but out back is a small building with tiny patio tables out front, a small bar, racks of wine for purchase, and maybe a back patio too (not sure). It doesn't open until 5 and doesn't take reservations. So if you want to hang out, you show up at 5pm and wait in line to get seated. We were surprised to find many people in line but we still managed to get a table on the front patio. Once you are seated here you can order wine by the bottle and the best part is if you don't finish it, you can take it home. But who am I kidding? I'm going to finish that bottle. You can also order from the FULL Gianmarco's menu. Which we did. All of the food was delicious and I even got gelato for dessert. Really solid Italian food. We hung out and drank wine forever and had a blast without having to have a reservation! Definitely a hidden gem of a place. Get a reservation or try the wine bar out back. read more

I am so happy I finally went here. I am from a historically Italian town in upstate New York and this is the first real Italian food I have found in Alabama. If you come here for dinner you will wait for a table, I highly suggest making a reservation first. Even so you will wait. It is that packed! You HAVE to order the fiocchi. They are homemade little pasta pouches filled with deciduous cheese and pears. Try your absolutely hardest not to eat them all in one bite and get too full for dinner. Same thing with their bread basket. They have one of the best wine lists in town so bring your drinking cap. I chose a nice Chianti reserve that was in the $40 range. They have both cheaper and more expensive, I chose middle of the road. Let the server tell you their specials. It is worth it! They have multiple and their menu is extensive so it's fun to share with your group or dining partner. I had a nice rabbit cannolini which was their special. Honestly I don't think you could go wrong with anything they make. I utilized my second stomach for some dessert. I chose their gelato which was a large rolled ball with Vanilla and chocolate coated in cocoa powder. It was so amazing I actually considered ordering another. I am going to be coming back here at LEAST once a month to get my Italian fix. I hear there is a cool wine bar behind the restaurant, so I will be trying that next! read more

Gianmarco's brings great Italian to Birmingham. We just don't have many "true" Italian places here in the Ham, unfortunately. But everything about Gianmarco's is spot on for "true" Italian. The service is spectacular. We can always count on being taken care of in the highest fashion - We DO have a favorite ... ask for Rachel! She will be at our table no sooner than the bread and water have hit it for our starter cocktail order! She's super attentive and also intuitive: she knows when we're in a conversation and doesn't interrupt us, yet makes sure we're always in perfect order! Gianmarco's menu is traditional - apps, salads, pastas, mains (save room for dessert!). But the specials ... the specials in each of those categories will knock your socks off. The chef's specials are usually a cool twist on a traditional Italian dish. Something you can't get anywhere else. And they're cook and presented PERFECTLY! I was visiting Bham for a college graduation and our friends made a reservation for lunch at Gianmarco's! Our servers were very attentive, bringing food and drinks promptly. This is no exaggeration, the pasta purses (fiocchi) was one of the BEST things I've ever had to eat at any Italian restaurant. It was delicately sweet from the pear and fig, with the subtle saltiness of the sauce. Every one else was equally pleased with their pasta, pizza and entrees. Without a reservation, we sat along the wall in the bar area, but the setting, service, and selections is equally as good, I'm sure. The table was a little small, but the server takes away dishes when appropriate to give you enough space. Gianmarco's is hands-down #1 Italian and top 3 restaurants I've experienced in Birmingham! I think the owners transplanted from Brooklyn years ago and maaan are we fortunate! You browse the wine menu and realize their selection is serious business. I hear the back of the restaurant has a different, more wine enthusiasts setting and you can take-out as well. We began with an appetizer of Fiocchi Pasta (purse-like pasta w/ some type of delicious filling in each one). These are magical and a necessary must-order your first time. Next up, entrees...we got distracted a little because they had at 4 specials on-deck. Ask for a recommendation if you can't decide and the waiters know the meals inside-out. So this isn't somewhere I go often. It's kinda pricey and you typically have to wait a long time to get a table. The two times I have been here, one being last night, I ate at the wine bar so not in the actual restaurant building. The wine bar is very cool it has a very cute little Italy feel that would be enhanced if people had to wait outside. It so tiny and get so crowded inside that people are right up on you while you eat. I am not a avid wine drinker and that is all they have in the wine bar for alcohol, which makes sense, but they have bottles to choose from with all levels of price points and any white wine you pick is already being chilled so that's nice. The menu is great with lots of choices but both times I have been I have ordered pasta. With the pastas they let you order two half portions so that you can try two different types. Which is pretty fun and I appreciate it. I would recommend this place but not for an all the time dinner choice. read more

Our third time here and a great experience. We brought out of town guests so our fingers were crossed. Two of us had the veal in wine sauce. It was served with spinach and polenta. The veal was perfectly cooked and was cut-with-a-fork tender. The portions were generous too. The other meals were chicken in a pot and lasagna. We also shared crab cakes and shrimp & grits appetizers. We all agreed that everything was great, and it is rare when four people have no complaints. Excellent Italian fare. Probably one of the best spots in Birmingham. Restaurant has an extensive wine list. Lasagna does not have ricotta, so, yeah, this is a real plus but the red sauce is very garlicky which is not Italian. I also had the "gelato" for dessert which is not quite a gelato, not even a gelato trying hard to be honest but it was a good ice cream (let's put this way). The restaurant has a log cabin in the back which is also a wine shop and you can actually eat there. Pretty nice setting for a date! You will require reservations for this restaurant and the valet parking is free but allow around 15 minutes for them to get your car. read more

First time here! It's a really cute hidden gem on the side of the road, first I thought the GPS was taking me to the wrong place. I Arrived and plenty of parking. I was taken care by JB and September they were very friendly and helpful with what to order. I sat in the bar and started off with a glass of Marquez de Cazares and a beautiful beef carpaccio with arugula, that was very good! As an entree de Fiochi.. If you haven't had it .. Absolutely a delightful meal. Service was also very good. I am not a pasta fan at an Italian restaurant but that did not matter. They have nice daily specials as well. The $14 Chicken Prosciutto pizza is delicious and I enjoyed every piece of it. It's much larger than their actual menus imply so avoid ordering any pizza item as an appetizer. You won't have any room left for the main course. When I asked for marinara sauce, the waiter oddly responded with "we don't know what a side of marinara sauce is" so he sent me home with a container of warm marinara sauce instead. I don't know if he was being funny but I sure enjoyed my sauce. The service is fantastic and the restaurant is intimate. Dress to impress. Food was pretty good. Had a party of like 12 there, so I got to sample a number of items. Drink: I had a vodka and blood orange drink. Great balance of strength and sweet. Appetizers: they had a special crab rangoon flatbread that was like brick oven fired pizza. It was awesome and my favorite part of the meal. I tried other Appetizers like risotto balls, and they were good. Main course: I ordered the filet special, which they ran out of, so by the time i had to order something else I was already filling up on apps so I just got a crab cake on corn maux choux. It was good, not great. But that allowed me to sample some of the other food on the table. I got a couple bites of steak and it was delicious. Fish and pastas were good too. Dessert: shared the apple tart thing. The cinnamon ice cream with caramel really made the dish. All in really good food. I saw some yelp reviews that were negative about atmosphere and physical comfort, and I have to agree. Just sitting at the table wasn't real comfy, and there was a cold vent blowing right on us. It looked like they might have outdoor seating in the back, but that could've been a different restaurant, since we were with a group I didn't ask. That would be a completely different feel.
