I've heard good things about this restaurant and yesterday was the first time I visited. I chose to use the valet parking because parking is very limited. I was not able to park on those tight streets. When you walk in, you notice how small the place is, but it felt cozy instead of congested. Our waiter was nice, but a tad bit distracted. I think he was covering most of the tables so that's kind of understandable. We had appetizers, which were delicious. My entree was the frittata. Nice evening with parents celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last Saturday night. Place was packed but had made reservations and got seated straight away. Waitress was so kind and friendly throughout the entire night. My father has a cocktail that he orders and it has become a family effort for the drink to come out correct as it isn't a popular cocktail (@50 years ago) so when our waitress took on the challenge and broke out her phone to look it up for the bartender we know she was keen to please him. Of course it was wrong but she stayed to make sure she got it right 2nd time. She also helped my mom select a nice dry red bottle for dinner. Dad loved the goat cheese appetizer and could have ordered a second helping. My husband's veal chop was huge and wonderful -had to take home leftovers. My veal piccata was a large portion lemony, tender. We brought in a cake to celebrate and waitress asked if it needed candles which I didn't think of since it wasn't a birthday and she was so thoughtful that she put a pink and blue candle on top for each to blow out have a cheers to 60 years! My wife and I visited our first time for her Birthday. All parking is valeted. That's nice... it allowed us to walk right in. We had a reservation. We were seated immediately. My first time here but my friend is a regular and always spoke highly of their menu , staff , etc. I am now a HUGE fan for sure!!!! We sat in the wine bar area , which is separate from the actual restaurant. The area we sat in is rather cozy and just low key. I loved it!!! Our server was amazing and extremely attentive. We sampled a few reds and decided to go with a bottle vs ordering individual glasses. The bottle we selected was excellent and paired nicely with our dishes. Since this was my first time here, I ordered an Italian dish. The Chicken Parmesan here is beyond amazing. This dish was seasoned perfectly and the portion sizes were huge. We had heard so much about Gianmarco's and how it was the best Italian restaurant in Birmingham. I'm skeptical of Italian restaurants given I grew up on the stuff being part Sicilian. So we went ahead and made reservations. We arrived and pushed our way through the busy bar area as you walk through the front door. Once we reached the hostess stand, we were seated and greeted with bread and olive oil. The wine list was pretty impressive, including the prices. It was your typical 300-400% up charge in wine. We had the beef carpaccio and the fiocchi as appetizers. These were the stars of the meal. I should have just gotten two orders of the fiocchi, which is a pasta purse that resembled an Asian dumpling filled with cooked pears and Gorgonzola, topped with walnuts, prosciutto, shaved Parmesan, in a drawn sage butter. The pears give it a slight sweetness but together with everything, it is very pallet pleasing. The entrees were the rack of lamb and the veal marsala. The veal marsala was just okay. I could make it a lot better at home with a bottle of dry marsala wine, mushrooms, fresh veal, and some other ingredients. The lamb was great though. Very tender and juicy piece of meat with lots of flavor. Honestly, there was so much lamb on the plate, I couldn't get over the cost. Hell of a deal if you ask me. We didn't partake in dessert but instead decided to head out after the entrees. Overall, it was pretty good. Would I make reservations a month or two out again to eat here? No. I think the restaurant was alright but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. I give it 3 stars because of the appetizers and the lamb. It could have been 4 had they been honest up front when you make reservations and let people know you are going to charge a 3.5% fee for any debit or credit card use. You can pay with cash or check though and not get charged. Even on the menu it says it, but it only says for credit cards, which actually applies to debit cards too. So remember that when you go, you need to have plenty of cash or a check if you don't want to get charged an extra 3.5%. read more

We had grouper, pork shoulder, and pear fiocchi. The pear fiocchi is an absolute must. I would have liked more of a sauce or something on the fiocchi. It just seemed like it was missing something- but still delicious. The grouper was pretty good but also felt like it missed a little depth. The pork shoulder had good flavor. We went for one of the last lunch services at Gianmarco's. The waitstaff was amazing. They perfectly paced our drinks and meals so we had a leisurely lunch experience. Three of us had the chicken Parmesan and two had the bolognese. The chicken parm is some of the best I've eaten, rivaling my trips to NYC. The portion was generous with breading that wasn't overly thick and a lovely sauce. But the unlikely star of the show... the olive oil. This was my first visit and had come highly recommended from many people, maybe an off night but I didn't understand the high reviews in my experience. We were seated in the backroom which was fine except it was very apparent there was an overall odor in that room, sour or methane which a dining partner indicated was stronger when going to towards the bathrooms, ok older building odors aren't enough to turn me away. Ordered two diet cokes, they were brought out in cans, always weird to me but more restaurants are doing it so ok but both cans were terrible tasting, server was great, brought two more, also terrible, server tasted also and agreed something was off, so that was strange. Ordered the Louie salad which was special, I didn't try it but person said it was ok. Another member of our party had the arugula and raddicchio salad and thought it was good and bigger than expected. Also had wedge salad, underwhelming, large slices of tomatoes and large slices of cucumbers served in a bowl not big enough to cut any of it. Was excited for the gorgonzola dressing but tasted like almost just mayonnaise. Table ordered veal chop Parm with polenta, the polenta was the highlight, very creamy and buttery. Also ordered the veal special, breaded, it was fine, but also underwhelming, and finally ordered the stuffed shells special. I believe it had five cheeses in it, one was overpowering the rest, would've loved more ricotta and also more seasoning. Our dinner was fine, server was attentive, but after all the recommendations I was expecting a little more, would go again if invited for a celebration or by others but wouldn't choose it myself given so many other options in the area. This was the dining choice of the 86 year old birthday girl in our 3 person party. We decided on a 5 pm reservation and that is the same time they open. Was a great choice for time and restaurant. Our waitstaff was wonderfully kind and knowledgeable. We didn't feel rushed at all, making our experience a two and a half hour gastro adventure. We started with a Pinot noir wine out of the Willamette Valley of Oregon (Stoller Family Estates) that was suggested by our waiter. We all loved its velvety and so smooth taste...perfect. We finished off two bottles! Our shared appetizer was the flash fried Calamari with a marinara dipping sauce. This was a hit with everyone at the table, even me. I tend not to partake of this dish due to most restaurants inability to properly cook it. This was perfect. The Ceasar salad was everyone's next choice. The main courses were all great as well and plentiful. The birthday girl had chicken Parmesan with penne and red sauce, my other companion ordered the Seafood Risotto (which was a VERY large serving) and I ordered the Italian meatloaf with garlic Parmesan mashed potatoes and broccoli-Rabe. Everything was fabulous and flavorful. (Well, actually, I can't speak to the broccoli-Rabe as that is a vegetable that is a non-starter for me). Fried crab claws, fiocchi, fried mozzarella, mushroom ravioli, sauage and peppers, steak and grouper cake, sorbet, chocolate tort, etc. I could eat their entire menu.
