So I decided to go on a cooking and baking frenzy and this place had everything I needed in the recipes I had. I had to find these three different types of cheese to make my lasagna from scratch and the guy working at the cheese area was very helpful. He even helped me get a grated version of one of the cheeses since I didn't want to go through the hassle of grating the block of cheese. The worker at the seafood counter was also nice and friendly. I could literally spend hours here if I could due to all the variety of food selection they have here. I definitely will be back for the huge variety of pickles they sell in their barrels! This place reminds me of a Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and your typical grocery market all combined in one. I even love how they have a wine vending machine in the front! read more

The produce here is always beaten to a pulp and expensive. We only get it here for convenience. The romaine is especially pitiful. We complained (finally) and received an apology and an offer for free cotton candy flavored grapes. We never did redeem our grape offer (as Snape would say, 'Pity',) and we haven't bought romaine here since we started getting the bulk of our groceries from Aldi for less. They have a large selection here and the generic brand goods are, well, good, but it's still pretty pricey. We head to Aldi first and get whatever's still on the list at GE, but we're getting less and less here. Overall thought on Giant Eagle: MEH. read more

The variety of sections in this grocery store makes it very convenient, e.g., There's a hot bar, a café, kosher, dessert, sushi and a very open fruits and veggie section. Where they lose points is on prices. I find prices here to be too high for the quality and find that I can snag a better deal at TJs and even Whole Paycheck if I hit the sales. I went today to grab some snow peas and they were dry, turning brown and shriveled up. Seems like no one is paying attention to keeping fruits and veggies fresh. read more

Ok, what a hassle. I haven't been to this location for a couple of years, and today just did not seem to be my day. I went there for a few grocery items along with some alcoholic beverages. Ok, it has been a while since I've been a PA resident, so I don't quite keep up with their liquor laws. I knew that they have state stores, and I was surprised that they opened it up to the grocery stores. I wasn't aware of the limitations... First off, alcoholic beverages and groceries cannot be purchased at the same time. Meaning, if you have a cart full of stuff (like I did) and some drinks, you will only be able to purchase the drinks at the cash register near Starbucks. I don't know why I keep saying the plural "drinks" because that's not happening either. One case per person. That's it. And they will card you. Be prepared...I saw someone try to buy 2 cases of beer for someone, and neither had their ID. They left empty-handed. The only thing that saved this store were the nice people that worked there. I was totally confused about the whole situation...I should be able to buy whatever I want...but I guess not here in PA grocery stores. The people that worked there both apologized about the rules they had to follow...but really what can you do? I hope the citizens of PA will wake up and move from the antiquated liquor laws into something more modern. read more

Store has a lot to choose from, but we have had HORRIBLE service from the bakery. Went into the store three times to order our wedding cake, left my contact info only to have no one call back - I finally get someone who can talk with me about a cake at 9am on a Sunday morning, and now they can't do it on a week's notice. I called the Giant Eagle Marketplace in Robinson, they said no problem, come into the store, we'll have someone to meet you, we'll figure something out. I guess the snotty people in the Shadyside store just don't need my business. read more

Overpriced, many items in produce have no prices marked and for good reason, current price for Asparagus is $6 per pound, dragon fruit which is very mushy is $5 each, I dread shopping there but not much major competition in this city. read more

I have to say along with others here that the only reason this was my grocery for years was that it was close and cheaper than a Whole Foods. However, a huge highlight for me is that it's open until midnight. This brings me to the major disadvantage of this Giant Eagle, in that's it's a MAD HOUSE every time I go here. Parking is a nightmare, getting into and out of the parking deck is painful, traffic in the aisles, and the waiting line to check out is typically awful. Therefore, I usually did all of my shopping at about 11 at night and I would go straight through (even though I had to get the bottom of the barrel with produce and other items). I have since moved over to ALDI's, which I assume is now stealing a bunch of business from Giant Eagle. One thing I do miss is picking up a Redbox movie right outside on my way out! read more

the produce section gets pretty barren at night, so go earlier in the day if you want fresh veggies. they also recently re-organized the store, and the asian aisle in particular was significantly reduced as a result. i used to buy sriracha here, but it seems that they don't carry it anymore (at least not the emblematic huy fong brand). also saw a mouse crawling around the fridges here once, but at least they have alcohol. read more

So I stumbled into this Giant Eagle Market District on my way home from Trader Joe's. (Note: The only grumble I have with TJ is lack of everyday essentials and I was suprised to learn that TJ doesn't stock dry beans). So I am headstrong about making lentil soup that day and instead of going to Whole Foods (see past review). I have been to the South Hills GE Market District before. I actually enjoy the experience of walking around HUGE stores that overwhelm me with variety and random things. Thus is the experience of GE Market District. You are in a full-service grocery store that caters to all income levels. AND you get FUEL POINTS for wasabi-covered soy beans. Fantastic! They give you a map of the store, which is truly needed, because the variety and stock is endless. The parking at the Shadyside GE is sort of hectic. Making a left out of the parking lot is pretty difficult. I enjoy these new Giant Eagle grocery-monopoly attempts. read more

Parking is tough. Good food quality & pricing are fair. I don't write too many reviews but the Pharmacy department is below average. Alex C in checkout is the absolute worst!!! They call you 10 times & say your prescription is ready to get there & they say it hasn't been filled yet. We need about 20-25 minutes to fill. read more

I remember when I was a student at Pitt, this grocery store opened my sophmore or junior year (hopefully I didn't just reveal my ripe old age!), amidst great fanfare! There really were no grocery stores convenient to campus (I'm discounting the slightly scary South Side GE) and to have such a massive, uniquely-stocked store right on the 71A and 71C buslines was a phenomenal asset to have at the time. I imagine this is still where many students do their shopping although there are several more options available (Trader Joes, Aldis, Whole Foods) now than back in the day. I have used the parking garage (since it's free) to go to some restaurants in the area when street parking has been difficult. I found myself in a pinch needing canned cat food (yes, I have a diva cat who turns his nose up at his dry food if it's not mixed with canned food) late this past Saturday night, and since my bf and I had dined in the area, we took a sidetrip after to market District to pick that up. Even at 11:30pm on Saturday night, there were a decent amount of people in the store. My bf, who does not live in the area, had never been to a Market District and he was pretty impressed with the variety of items you could get. While this is not my favorite MD-that honor belongs to the massive store in Robinson, although Wexford is quite nice too-it's a prime location for city residents and those that happen to be in the area and are in need of picking up a few items (or three). read more

Overpriced groceries, but this review is for the beer and Starbucks. The beer selection is by far the best iv seen in any of the giant eagles, and it beats the hell out of the ridiculously overpriced bottle shops. They also have a handful or so of rotating beers on draft, most of which are world class, where you can fill growlers or drink a pint right there in the store! And for the Starbucks, well its starbucks. But Its so convenient and quite an experience to have all this in one store. Considering the PA alcohol laws, this location is a blessing read more

The good: large selection. The bad: the crazy high prices, missing price labels, inconvenient location. It's come to the point that I avoid this place if I can. Aldi's is better for the basics and Pearl Market in the Strip district has better produce for 4x cheaper than this place. read more

The GE is overly-large and over-priced. Yes, I have seen the food same item at other neighborhood GE's for less. For those of us who like to "shop the perimeter" of the grocery store (meaning where the real food lives), and for those of us who do not like their grocery store to feel like an airport, this store is not good. I realize I am in the minority, however. Most people want bigger, more, more expensive (if they notice). And they put up with a bad parking lot and long check out lines, too. Honestly, I prefer the (gasp) East Lib/ Shakespeare St. GE. I can always park right outside the door and have had no problems with the produce, the dairy items or the service. read more

Wow, this store has greatly improved since I've been gone. In ten years, it's turned into quite a nice store. The variety of merchandise is great, although coming from the Midwest, I need to adjust to the price of food being higher. The cashiers have been pretty friendly as well. read more

One of the best beer selections and beer prices in the city. They've got a well-stocked craft section with high turnover (so no ancient IPAs) and get a lot of rare and specialty beers. They get some great stuff on tap too, plus have a happy hour with $2 off a growler fill. Grocery is fine - a little pricey, good selection. Expect a crowd on the weekends - it is the easiest supermarket to reach from the universities and plenty of students live nearby too. Crowds mean high turn over, so the veggies are generally pretty good. read more

Everyone complains about how expensive Whole Foods is in this area, but I find the Market District to be even more expensive for lesser quality. I despise going to this location, it is always packed with the rudest people imaginable and the employees act like they have anywhere better to be than at work. I have worked in a grocery store before and it is not always the most pleasant, but the way I have been treated there everytime I go is beyond imagining. Giant Eagle has managed to monopolize grocery stores in this area and kept out other chains I would prefer such as Wegman's. The produce here is subpar and anytime I do buy it I end up with a swarm of fruit flies at my house. I once saw a tomato display crawling with hundreds of them and the employees did nothing. Go to Whole Foods and buy their store brand, you'll save yourself money and be around employees who are enthusiastic to help. read more

From beginning to end, I just wanted to escape this Giant Eagle as soon as possible. I made the terrible decision of trying to stop by this grocery store today (a Saturday) in the late afternoon. The traffic was terrible outside on Centre, but I finally made it into the parking garage, surprisingly close to the exit. I was in search of mason jars and cheesecloth to make homemade yogurt and water kefir. (Yes, very hippy and crunchy of me, I know.) I found some jars and containers on the paper products aisle - but not what I needed. My husband said that it should be on the aisle with the kitchen gadgets - still couldn't find what I needed. I was about to give up when I walked past the nearby coffee section and found suitable jars. I was so desperate that I didn't care how much they cost -- but now that I see that a 12 count box of Ball® 32oz wide mouth mason jars cost only $11.99 on Target.com, I kind of want to kill myself for spending the same amount for two at Giant Eagle. Now that I had (overpriced) jars, I had new-found determination to now find someone to help me obtain the cheesecloth. Thankfully, I found a very friendly (actually, couldn't decide if he was nice-friendly or awkwardly-overly-flirty-friendly) young guy who pointed me in the right direction for cheesecloth. I checked out as quickly as possible and nearly ran out of the store. read more

This Easter Sunday was particularly disappointing. As closing time was approaching they were yelling to shut the lights off all the registers and walking up and down aisles yelling customers it was time to go. They claimed they made announcements overhead but these were not heard. When I inquired about the reason for all the commotion the lady at the door got very argumentative. There is a better way to treat customers...especially on Easter Sunday. read more

Just came back from shopping there and have vowed I won't return, even though I live nearby. They have deliberately shortened the conveyer-belts on which you unload your groceries as they are rung up, and if you have a large order, there isn't enough room to both unload your groceries and bag them yourself, which is what you ALWAYS have to do at this location if you have a large order, because the baggers always conveniently disappear when it's your turn in line. Luckily, the cashiers are usually surly and passive-aggressive, so the experience is entirely horrible, rather than just generally awful. Bonus: if you buy boxed La Croix seltzer, the box will ALWAYS break as you're trying to set it on the conveyer belt, and the surly cashier will act as though it's your fault, even though this has happened three times in a row (but previously only when you've tried to pick up a box to put in your cart; previously, you have actually been injured by the seltzer cans falling on your sandaled feet. An extra bonus, though, is that you'll have plenty of time in the long check out lines to think about just what it is the stockers do to the La Croix boxes to make this happen every time. Twice, you have taken home La Croix boxes that have been TAPED UP, so you aren't crazy. This is an actual thing. If you're especially lucky, your passive-aggressive cashier will step away from slamming your produce down to slowly, slowly, sllllooowwly move the cans you picked up and set them somewhere else while you are waiting to pay but you can't pay because she has inexplicably left the very last item of your groceries to ring up while she moves your sad and bashed-in cans of La Croix slowly slowly away to await the magical moment when they will be reboxed and taped up. Lather, rinse, repeat). If you care anything at all about customer service or the groceries you've carefully selected not getting damaged in the course of being rung up, don't shop here. Ever. this giant eagle is far superior than the one on shakespeare street. and yet, it's still got a long way to go. i bought a bottle of their store brand sweet ice tea once and when i got home to drink it, it didn't taste right. further inspection revealed that the bottle was a full month past expiration. and they still had it one the shelves. when i went back to return it, they told me i could get another one, but all the other ones on the shelf were also expired. just yesterday i went to buy simple orange brand orange juice. all of the bottles had expired by a month! i ended up buying tropicana. moral of the story: always check the expiration dates of anything you buy at this giant eagle. their dry cleaning service here does a decent job of cleaning, but the service is lousy. i won't go here for my dry cleaning again. read more

Shadyside Giant Eagle has really gone down hill! I think that their deli is quite good, and they keep their store stocked and well staffed. However, I often feel unsafe shopping there. I have had my shopping cart taken from me while I was shopping. I confronted the individual who took my shopping cart, only to find that he really didn't care that I had it before him. The security on staff didn't seem to care when I complained to them. The customer service staff can be rude. I was told over the phone that they cash third party checks, but when I arrived at the store they told me "I don't know who you talked to, but we don't do that here!" I recommend Whole Foods they are much better! read more

There are too many sections in Giant Eagle. I wanted to give them a 4. The reason for 3, is when you go to the hot food section. Rarely does anyone want to help you, you have to ask and they seen frustrated, Just today, at around 11am. The gentlemen at the pizza bar (tall, mid 30's white male) was so helpful, so attentive. Out of the whole line of employees at the bar, he was the one attended to my order, and even gave me a sample as I waited. I ordered 6 - 8 pieces of fried chicken, which is usually sitting on the hot table outside and easily accessible. It was too early and they still did not bring that out. I want to give him a 5 star. 3 for the hot table (before him). and 4 for the overall store. I think their parking in the front needs more handicap spots. I was taking my mother to the store, and the handicap spots were almost filled. This place is crowded - indeed! However, if you are familiar with self check-out. The check out section is not so bad. It's very close to my house. I only drove because or my mother. I can walk, it's two blocks away. I love this place, it's usually very clean, long hours. I'm one of the weird ones that likes to shop at 6am. 3 stars for the hot table, 4 stars for the over all store and parking spaces, and 5 stars for the gentlemen by the pizza bar that helped me today. read more

I'm completely bewildered by the bad reviews I've read. I am new to Pittsburgh and until recently I always shopped at Dorothy Lane Market, rated the best gourmet grocery store in the country last year. I am impressed with Giant Eagle and some of the items they carry--Jeni's Ice Cream, Talenti Gelato, Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce and great fresh fried chicken. There are strange items missing though...white corn, brining kits, chicken cloth, thick cut peppered bacon, fresh calves liver, tulips, anchovy stuffed peppers at the antipasto bar, store made salad dressings, pico de gallo for instance. And in spite of having a HUGE kosher section they do not carry Empire brand frozen chicken fat (schmaltz). Back home if you asked for something they would order it for you. My only negative experience at Giant Eagle was with the Kosher deli associate who wasn't at all helpful along these lines. Everyone else has been great! Including the store security guard who helped me find things my first time in the store. read more
