Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and spinach meal.

I had ordered a small fruit tray 1-1.5 weeks ago at a specific time since they don't always have this size to pickup. Unfortunately, some workers (possibly third party ones as it looked like handymen type employees were around) had knocked over the original tray. I ended up waiting 20-30 minutes and they decided to comp me fully! I thought I was going to get like a 10% discount. The staff here is really nice every time I have had to interact with them. The store always seems clean to me. I saw a complaint or two with the salad bar and they have taken away the salad bar. While I miss it, I also hardly use it and maybe they lost more money from it than they made.

This is the brand new Giant in the footprint of the previous but now defunct Genuardis. This formerly upscale grocery chain was bought by Safeway and from day one, it started being treated as a red-headed stepchild, losing clients by the bucketful and eventfully being considered a liability. Fifteen of the old Genuardis stores became property of Giant, while ten other stores will close down or be absorbed by other chains. Sad to see this previously imposing family chain go defunct after 90 years but Giant has done a wonderful service to the communities it serves by maintaining the employment of the staff, sprucing up the stores, and generally elevating the level of service and quality after a visible quality control decay under Safeway. The new Giant in Springfield has maintained roughly the same layout, but the produce section has visibly improved. Gone are the almost soggy veggies and the expired lettuce. And noticeably, the seafood selections have expanded as well as the deli and breads. The formerly demoralized staff seems to be now cheerful and happy after retraining in the Giant business models. Let's see if it continues and institutionalizes on its improvements.

The carts at this store are HORRIBLE!!! It takes many tries to find one that doesn't have a bad wheel that makes loud noise during your shopping. You'd think that the employees would see them set aside, test them, and pull them out of service. The restroom is always disgusting. The deli...don't even bother. You'll stand there for ages waiting for your number to be called or your kiosk order to be completed. They're understaffed but the staff is nice.

I have noticed with the last couple of months, the shelves in the store have not been well stocked. I have been told it is the night crew. Whatever- it is not the Giant that it was when it opened. Different story for the pharmacy. That pharmacy is the BEST. It has always been good but since the new Pharmacy Manager, Andrew, took over it has sky rockted. Knowledgeable, pleasant, caring and with a smile. They seem well stocked looking at their shelves. They also give all shots. If you need one, consider Giant, 721 W. Sproul, pharmacy either Andrew or Allen. They care.

There are times when the things that you need to cook something very special, or just something…read morevery specific cannot be found at a standard grocery. These happen to be my favorite times, as I love cooking and I love making things authentic and as legitimate as possible when I can. Over the past year, I have made it my personal achievement to become proficient in making tamales. Over the last eight months I have learned to perfect multiple different tamales, but I cannot call myself a master, as I have not put in the time of a true master. This is what led me to La Mexicana. A search for proper ingredients beyond just the simple masa and lard. I am always looking for fresh peppers when it's out of season that I cannot grow and dry myself. As well as other things to toy with my base tamale recipe to try and create new and amazing things that may have not been done before. I am happy to say LA Mexicana has everything one needs and more to make any Latin meal and also has incredible people working there. The shop looks small from the outside but runs deep with a wonderful vibe and classic decoration and bright color. They have a deli towards the side and rear and even have the wonderful pastry cabinet that I hope to find in every carniceria. If you are in the area, this is one of the best and your best bet for great produce and all the best products you will not find anywhere else.

Sometimes a person will find a gem of a store that is so easy to miss it is a shame. If you ever…read moreare curious about trying Spanish-inspired dishes or at the very least want to see what you can get in a store like La Mexicana check it out! I have gone here as of today almost a handful of times and I get more interested in food culture and how food is cooked in Mexican and other ways. There is a surprising amount of food in such a small shop including as the front sign states a deli. They also have canned foods bagged foods like beans and blue flour corn and a section of refrigerated drinks that I only scratched the surface with purchasing. If you are wanting to support a rare business in the delco area or want to make something that is hard to find ingredients for in this part of North America, this place is for you so check it out! I do think you will love it.
