This is my 2nd review for them. Made an appointment for balayage and they were very accommodating. I had Gina as my hair stylist and she is an artist and I loved my hair. Gina was very professional and talented. She asked me of my vision and delivered better than expected results. She did my balayage on black hair and a trim and style. Her suggestions were on point and took my lifestyle, skin tone, etc. in consideration when working on my hair. I've gotten my hair done before at other places and the service has been above par here and I highly recommend Gina. They were very clean and everyone in the salon wore their masks. I had quarantine hair that I needed to chop off. My landlord suggested I went here, and she even called to make an appointment on my behalf. Things I appreciated: 1) appointment was set for 3 pm and was promptly taken in the back for hair washing and haircut didn't take more than 25 minutes. 2) great customer service. 3) for those of you concerned about virus, they wear masks, hand sanitizer is located at the very entrance for anyone that may want. Every seat has a partition. Big black sofa has blue tape on it to remind social distancing. 4) cashless payment and plastic partition between customer and receptionist is present. First and foremost, my three star rating is ONLY applicable to the salon and how it's run- NOT the quality of the stylists- that is hands down 5 stars across the board. As far as stylists go, I have been going to see Dimitri for 5 years through a coworker referral. I would give that hair God 10 stars if I could; I have sent about 6 different people to him and all have left his chair feeling sassy and gorgeous- the way you should always feel leaving a hair salon. For the other hair dressers, I always see beautiful hair and happy clients by the time they are walking out. Now for the important part...why I'm giving the salon 3 stars. I'm not cheap by any means and I have zero problem spending on things as important as hair. However, it's no secret the cost of getting your hair done in the city is obscenely overpriced which is one of the reasons why I first started going to New Image out in Queens was to get relatively affordable prices. And in the beginning, it was fair prices for cut, color, blow dry- the works. Not cheap, but the same cost as what I would pay to my trusted hair stylist back home in southern CA. I was happy and looking/feeling great on top of it. Now fast forward to the last 2 years- every time I have gone and went to pay I've been shocked with the price and asked for a cost breakdown (prices are completely set by salon management, not the stylists). I NEVER DO THAT ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE. EVER. The response I get varies from "that's the cost for a combo of the services you got" (which is not advertised or discussed anywhere) or "it's always been that price" (which it definitely never was and I always say that to them). Not only that, my friends who get the exact same service as I do pay different prices every time they go (which is not normal to not pay a close to similar price and which is always less than what I pay). I get it- prices in New York and rent are constantly rising- but not THAT significantly where someone pushes back and questions it EVERY TIME in the last two years. The last time I went- I got a color and blowout. That's it. No toner. No highlights. No cut. I PAID $170 WITHOUT TIP. I purposely did not schedule to get my hair cut because of their ridiculous new pricing structure and was expecting to pay a decent amount less than I usually do. WELL BOY WAS I SURPRISED. The time before that I got cut, color, toner, highlights and blowout and paid $280 without tip (which I used to pay $200-$210 w/o tip for). So you're honestly really telling me that I got 3 less services with a $100 price difference?! No. That's not what it is. They change their prices around a cost they want you to spend or think you should spend every time you go and it's obvious because their pricing structure or cost for services IS NOT CONSISTENT. It's really upsetting because they know I've been going there for 5 years now, have sent many people to them and they also know well that people come out to their salon with the false pretence they will be getting a better or more fair price than what they would pay in the city- but now, there isn't much of a difference. Other than that important factor, the salon is clean and well kept and generally has a nice energy which is important for clients to have an enjoyable experience- and I always do....until lately at the very end which is not a nice way to end your appointment. The more their prices rise, the less I can afford to tip my hair stylist and the wonderful, hard working hair assistants they have in the salon. I personally don't think that's fair to them (in addition to the customer) and it's also not something I want to do because they deserve it. Will I keep going because I love Dimitri? Yes. Will I continue to earnestly insist their prices are affordable to new people I refer? No. read more

So after quarantine, I desperately needed a haircut and decided I wanted a pretty big change and decided on a lob. The first day that they were open, I called and was fit in immediately and I was hooked up with Gina who was super friendly from the get-go. I was nervous about getting my hair washed and dried given the coronavirus situation, so I came with my hair wet and opted not to blow dry, which obviously makes getting a new hair style a bit challenging. Gina told me to come back if I thought I wanted it shorter since it might look different when it dried. So, I got home, and it was a good cut, but once it dried it was definitely longer than I wanted. I felt morally conflicted about going back and asking for it shorter. Long story, I did go back and I'm glad I did. Gina warmly welcomed me back and made sure I was happy with my cut. (I am- it came out great!). I mostly wanted to leave a review not because of the cut I got which I love, but for how Gina treated the situation and never once made me feel weird or awkward about coming back. Instead, she made me feel at ease for what was a totally uncomfortable situation for me. For review on virus precautions- they have all the necessary things in place to keep everyone safe- barriers in between chairs, hand sanitizer, and everyone was wearing masks, which at the time of this review, is exactly what is being recommended. read more

A bunch of fake reviews here about how great Gina is. Please don't go to this place for hair color (that's all I tried). I requested that they do roots only. Pictures speak for themselves as to final result. In fairness they offered to fix it, but there was NO WAY I was going to trust anyone in that salon to touch my hair again. Worse is that they tried to overcharge me (from $40 to $50 for roots only) when what they should have done is not charge a penny for destroying my hair. I've had a few positive experiences here but the one thing that always leaves a bad taste in my mouth is the way that the staff speaks about poc and members of the lgbtq+ community. Their conversations frankly come off as very ignorant and is most definitely not a safe space for anyone that isn't white and straight. especially with what's going on in the world, i don't understand why they think its okay to speak like this. This is my second time getting by micro bead Exstentions done by Gina not only is her work the best i have ever got i have been getting Exstentions for 12 years i dont know all my years living in Astoria i have not found Gina sooner.!!! I came in here this past week and I literally got the WORST haircut of my life by Katerina/Kathy. I asked her for layers and she seemed to know what she was doing but I couldn't have been more wrong. When she was done cutting my hair it looked OK, not great but I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I guess since it was blow dried it looked fine. The next day I woke up and noticed that my hair legit only has 2 lengths, really short, and really long. I asked for layerS, not a layer!! And second, she didn't use those thinning scissors at the tips of my hair once she was done cutting so my hair looks literally chopped and just so terrible! I am so embarrassed of this cut that I have been wearing my hair up all the time. I need to let my hair grow out a little bit and find someone who can fix it. Men... Women... Stay away from this place. I go in for a haircut, and they give me some lady who knew scissors as well as I know love. She was taking chomps of hair in her fingers and looking at it like, "yeah, I guess this is right." She knew less about layers than a nudist colony, and made me look like the bass player for Hootie & The Blowfish - that 90s haircut somewhere between a dirty blonde penis and Leonardo DiCaprio's hair, circa Aviator. To end it all off, she blew hair clippings into my shirt and shoes. When I say, "I'd like the back to taper off," and she stares at me and says, "Yeah, we gonna do like..." and then just proceeds to grab a chunk of hair and toss it, that's inadequate. I'm not a shill for Envee (I criticized their Yelp for fudging their page with fake reviews) but go there instead. New Image can keep their image -- I want a haircut. read more

Monica is "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" This is my third haircut, and I am continually amazed at the hairstyle she has created for me. It literally took my breath away the last time I left the salon. I had really long hair on my first visit, and she expressed trepidation on giving me a shorter "do". I feel like the hairstylists in there need to go back to school to learn more style or at least listen to what the patron wants. Great place! I have been to 3 stylists there and they were all amazing. Eleni is the best of all. She's very talented and really listens to you and works with you to find the best cut for your hair type. She will be honest if she thinks something won't look good. And she's freakin an AWESOMESAUCE human being. Never overly busy, but with steady stream of clients, the place is small and clean with friendly staff. The staff really listens to you and helps you find a style you like. Fairly priced at about $40 for a ladies cut and style. And the best part is they don't try to sell you products while cutting your hair. And don't forget to tip the girls who wash your hair. I usually tip them 3-5 dollars They do cut and color and bonded hair extensions. Good for both youthful clients and baby boomers. I'm a salon floater- meaning I just go from salon to salon getting cuts. My half buzzed-half Rihanna do grew into a box & ive been living in beanies and hats, so I randomly dropped in to New Image out of desperation. Receptionist was nice enough since I've had unwelcoming experiences at other salons. Have to admit the wash was the worst I've ever had though- ONE rinse and done in like 3 minutes? I had Monica as my stylist. I was freaking out the whole time since she was taking a while as if unsure. And my hair had been turned into 80yr old granny-style too many times... But to my surprise, it was the total opposite! For the first time EVER, a stylist actually gave me a trim when I asked for one instead of hacking it all off into a cut. Everything was cleaned up nice and Monica actually listened and asked questions. The trim came out pretty much like how I wanted it although the style looked a bit dated. She even gave me tips and what products to use for growing my hair out (not pushing me to buy their products at all). I washed and styled it at home and Monica was on point with cleaning my boxy hair up. Have to say that $36 is pretty pricey for a trim, but it came out well. read more

I moved to Astoria about a year and a half ago and have gone to a few different salons. So far, New Image is the best I've experienced. They cut, styled, and colored my hair (which was very long cut to shoulder length) and it came to $80 (which included double the dye due to the length). I was charged three times this amount when I went to SPACE, which is on Ditmars as well. The overall service was typical for a busy salon. They were friendly to me while working with me, and otherwise left me alone. I appreciated the feedback from the colorist when choosing which color they would apply. They had suggested I go a little lighter than I had requested due to my complexion and I can honestly say I'm glad. I have never received so many compliments on my coloring in my life. I've recommended this salon to a few of my friends and will be returning. read more

She was the only person who understood how to take my black hair, to blonde (and all different shades of it through the years) by highlighting and not double-process. She can match any picture. I used to be a salon hopper constantly looking for a better deal. I get my hair highlighted (1/2 head), cut and color and its usually around $130 for everything. I think this is very well priced compared to other Astoria salons. I have been going to Reina for the past 2-3 years and LOVE her. If you ask her to trim your hair that is exactly what she does. She listens to what I want and gives me exactly what I ask for. Every time I have had my hair washed they do a great job. I would highly reccomend this place to anyone. They also just added in a nail salon in the back so its really full service. Everyone that works there has always been friendly and outgoing. Gina has cut my hair twice- she spruced up my style with some layers but made sure to keep my hair long enough to put in a ponytail. I have gotten many compliments on the cut.
