I went here looking for a nice house plant to get for a housewarming gift, and also was looking for some herbs. They gave some beautiful house plants and I like that almost each one is identified by name and care instructions provided. I ended up getting some plants for myself! The herbs are also indetified and properties given, which I find incredibly helpful. The herbs all looked healthy and I brought home a bunch to use in my cooking at home. I also bought a few clay pots to transplant them into. They also have potting soil, dirt, birdseed and bird houses, and annual and perennial flowers and outdoor plants. They also sell fresh eggs ( I was told they sell out quick). Prices are on the higher end, but I think much better quality and choice then at box stores. They also have a nice little gift area which was lovely. Parking lot and wagons for use to load up all you want to purchase. read more

This is my go-to place when I replant my herb garden every spring. Fabulous quality and selection, including many harder-to-find herbs like verbena, lemon thyme, tarragon and red-veined sorrel. They have multiple varieties of the more common herbs (basil, mint, sage ...). I also really like their unusual annuals, especially coleus, but you have to go early in the season before they all get bought up. Gilbertie's has lots of great pots and cool items in the gift shop, as well as seeds, fertilizers, and much more. I love how the friendly cats act like they own the place. It's a gorgeous property, and sometimes I go there just to walk around and enjoy the beauty and peace. The winter farmers' market is a wonderful place to visit for a change of scenery during the colder months. read more

I brought my mom here for Mother's Day & we both loved it. It's so beautiful here and there's so much to see & pick from. I returned 2 weeks later by myself to pick up some ladybugs and enjoy the ambiance. I recommend this place for wide selection of starter veggies, fruits, herbs & beautiful flowers! read more

Rows & rows of herbs, veggies, flowers, & hanging plants, planters, lawn ornaments, shrubs & anything else none might think of to enhance the gardening enthusiast's experience. I'm gonna have to agree with David - cats are the highlight of the store. The only reason I go is the very convenient location. It's rare I get any type of service or help here. Though a disclaimer that on my very last visit, a lovely lady helped me pick out some plants for my window boxes and an equally lovely lad helped me carry them to my car. The tiny plants were $6 each, expensive for window boxes, and we did ask the manager for some sort of discount but he wouldn't budge. If I had time to buy them elsewhere, I would have, but needed them immediately. I did see some garden vegetables for sale at the counter, which is a very nice offering. If the location were anywhere else, I would never ever venture into the store. read more

I remember going to Gilbertie's Nursery with my Mother when I was a child. She was the person that instilled the love of gardening in me. I may have unconsciously given an extra star for nostalgia. Gilbertie's was established in 1922 and it's still a marvelous nursery. Sal Gilbertie wrote the book on herbs... actually he wrote several books on herbs. The nursery is packed with herbs, annuals, perennials, succulents, shrubs, water plants, tress, fruits, vegetables and so on. Check out my 13 Photos. Cane here on a Saturday afternoon with the bf to pick out our new herb children to grow this summer. There was a 3/$11.99 sale for small herb and vegetables going on. Pretty pricey compared to the chain stores like Lowe's, Walmart, Stew Leonard's, etc. However, the variety here can't be beat. I've never seen so many different types of basils before, and they have lemongrass, lemon verbana, spearmint, oregano, and the list goes on. We ended up buying the rosemary, basil, cilantro, and mint. Should have bought thd hot pepper and leeks as well to save money, but oh well. Didn't want to start off with a lot in case we end up cursed with no green thumbs and dead herbs. The cashier did give us a $1off coupon for future purchase bc we bought over $10. The prices for the soil and pots were out of our reach, so we ended up buying them elsewhere. read more

Great family garden center for seeds, pots, tools, soil amendments, flowers and shrubs. There are butterflies all over the perennial yard because their pollinator plant selection is excellent! This has been one of my favorites for over 30 years! read more

My family and I used to shop at this nursery until a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning. I waited in line where the cashier was kind and hospitable to the people in front of me. When I checked out with cash, the cashier had a bad attitude and threw her arms in the air as she complained saying I can't pay with a $50 bill. I can't help but to notice that I was the only Hispanic in line and was the only one spoken to this way. I will never go here again. There are other nurseries where the staff is more knowledgeable, more helpful and absolutely more welcoming to all people. read more

This is the best Garden center I have been to. Not only is it a beautiful and inspiring garden center to visit, they have a wonderful array of flowers, plants, herbs and pots and garden tools, and their staff are all incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. As a novice gardener I have lots of questions and one of their most helpful staff members, Deb, has gone out of her way to give me tips and ideas and spends extra time to answer all of my questions, going well above and beyond the type of customer service I have received elsewhere. you can find quite a few different herbs at the union square greenmarket, both cut and ready for the kitchen or as plants. if you ever find yourself wishing for even more, gilberties is a great find. they carry my absolute favorite mint, kentucky mint. this is the best mint i have ever come across for making mojitos and mint juleps. i've tried quite a few other mints for these drinks, and there's just no substitute for this variety. in the last few years i've tried growing one of every type of rosemary they offer, and their foresteri rosemary is the clear winner, both in terms of tripling it's size during the summer and in it's unmatchable flavor. there is no better smell in the fall than the smell of foccacia peppered with liberal amounts of the foresteri rosemary baking in the oven. this year they have added some different herbs used in different japanese dishes. i try to keep up with what's out there but before this spring i've never heard of any of them. the website lists most of the herbs they carry, but it seems like they haven't updated it, because quite a few of the new varieties i found at the nursery were not listed on their site. the other problem i have is that the last frost date for this area is may 15th. it's not a good idea to do any planting before then. so why did their stock seem so depleted only a few days before that? the bottom line is that if you don't go early, you'll miss out on the best plants like i did this year. that, in combination with the website not being updated makes them lose a couple of stars. still, this place is definitely worth a visit if you do a lot of cooking, baking, and like to grow your own herbs. read more

Theres only one problem with Gilberties and its way too easy to get carried away here. There are herbs you never knew existed, of course you HAVE to buy them and try them, there are endless varieties of lavender, thyme, oregano, mint, rosemary, you name it. Beautiful flowers, plants and trees, as well as gardening supplies, pots, planters. This place makes me WANT to garden and I loathe yard work. It's also nice to support a local business even though similar products (as far as pots and planters and tools) cost less elsewhere. Everything here is well cared for and you can enjoy it as soon as you bring it home. My favorite buy this year has been the wasabi arugula :) read more

They have the best selection of herbs and a nice assortment of perennials. There are some veggie plants including tomatoes at the start of the season. One greenhouse is full of planters. It is a great place to browse. The prices for somethings are a bit high, but the small herbs are very reasonable. read more

A terrible experience. As a rose bush purchased from Gilberties grew out, its rootstock took over. The New Dawn roses disappeared, replaced by withering flowers and ugly thorny growth. When we went back to ask for help, an employee told us that the bush would be replaced and we would hear from the owner. The owner's response was "good luck." And when we told him that we could no longer recommend the nursery to friends or neighbors, his comment was "go do your worst." Rude and insulting attitude towards customers and a failure to stand behind their products. It's only a mile away, but we'll never go their again. read more

just called their store and spoke to one of the most disinterested and unhelpful functionaries that I have ever dealt with! was simply trying to get a list of the herbs they sell by fax, on line...anyway we could so as not to waste a long drive for naught. this person could not have cared less and was very bothered by the request maybe it is the "Westport factor" but better to drive twice as far and find nice people somewhere else! read more
