First time going to a brewery since pre-Covid, and I really appreciated the enforcement of social distancing practices/mask wearing when you weren't at your table. QR codes at the tables allow you to view the menu and order beer/food directly to your table! I met up with a friend and we did a sampling of our favorite beers - for me, that means anything that tastes like coffee or chocolate, so stouts ;) Also ordered a ruben sandwich; which has set the standard for all futures rubens. I had bookmarked Gilman Brewing Co. after reading that CM Emma W's review listing it as one of her favorite Bay Area breweries. Arriving around 1pm, we easily found parking at the corner. At the entrance, the worker said we can either sit inside next door or at one of the outside tables or then order from the menu by scanning the QR code. Since it was windy, we sat at one of the seven round bar tables. For the larger groups, there are a couple of long bar tables. After scanning the QR, we checked out the beer and food offerings. Since we just had lunch, we ordered our beers. I enjoy porters and stouts and I saw only one on the menu, the 5W30 Russian Imperial Stout. The beer had a dark color with flavors of vanilla, chocolate and coffee. It was so smooth and tasty! It had a full body. My co-worker, who's a beer aficionado was impressed how good it tasted. Was in the neighborhood and have wanted to stop here for quite a bit so I couldn't pass by. Outside looks like a typical metal industrial workshop common to the area, with some shaded patio area for outdoor seating and dining. They have a nice planter area covering succulents to aromatics. A trailer kitchen shows up outside which has a great menu. Inside is completed with reclaimed wood shiplap and metal (copper & weathered zinc)in areas of service and seating juxtaposed with conventional brewing fermenters, refrigeration, and a small kitchen area. Service is at the ready in the main entrance. They have a couple small fridges with packs to go. Order your beers and food then get in where you fit in, you get a buzzer so you know when the food is ready for pick up at the warmer table by the front. The guys working the taps are busy, friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to accommodate the requests. The crowd on a Sunday is everywhere from Berkeley to vintage to punk and even after-church (lots of boots: hiking to fashion to punk). A steady stream of people coming in all getting served without hiccup or extensive wait is a super nice feature here. The music is chill, low enough to enjoy but not overwhelm. The main dining area has TV with baseball. Best thing about the venue: everyone has a smile. I ordered a 6 pack of tasters for $18 that covered some ciders to ipa to saisons. The Pamplemoussee Cider is light and refreshing, while the Cherry Cider is liquid cherry pie (light, sweet, sour, cherry, yummy). I liked the French Maison Saison, the esters are not too pronounced while the malt and yeast combined to give something pleasant (it went down quick). The Nectarine Saison is something one should try while it is available. It has just enough nectarine essence on the front and after taste to please anyone who likes a little sour but is looking for farmhouse style flavor. It isn't too filling but is not a light beer and I chose this for a to-go selection. Their Punxsutawney Hazy is on the lighter side of hazy ipa, it has a slight note of bitterness tempered by a medium-light malt; as with many of their hazy ipa styles I have tried before this, would be a great afternoon session beer. The Gilman Belgian Saison is robust, fresh barnyardy, light on texture, but toasty in the malt notes; it really compliments the recent winter weather of the bay. After all those great tastes I went back and got a taste of the Frog on a Bicycle West Coast IPA. This beer made me smile, it's simple, hoppy, crisp, balanced, and clear; drink it with baseball, drink it with lunch, drink it! To my understanding the menu has recently changed with Detroit style pizza now being the focus. I heard some folks asking about the wings and Birria, if they are asking it must have been good. No worries I saw some great pizzas coming out of the kitchen and could not ignore them. I ordered a half pie pepperoni and a full pie to-go of the green goddess. Look at the pizza pic make your own judgement if you want that with beer. The pizza is nice, high hydration focaccia style dough, cheese on top, then sauce and toppings. The dough is fluffy, crust crispy, pepperoni cooked to a cup, onions caramelized, arugula snappy, ricotta pillowy: makes the beer that much better when the kitchen detail is this good. This is like hipster bro paradise. For COVID safety purposes, staff and patrons must wear masks, seating is socially distanced, and hand sanitizer is provided. West Berkeley located Gilman Brew co is a small taproom. Came out for a mini East bay brew tour with my brothers and this was our first pit stop for the night. I got a glass of Gilman farmhouse at 6.5%. It was smooth and with a hint of fruit in the middle and at the end was kind of dry. I don't know if that makes any sense. Go Belgian Saison. I've been to Gilman Brewing Company one other time in the past and I remembered their menu being very IPA heavy: I was happy to see a stout on the menu, as well as a sour. I had the 5W30 and the vanilla, chocolate, and coffee flavors were bold. I would not hesitate to get this beer again. I opted to get a large pour, but in hindsight, should've gotten the small pour so I could've tried out another beer. The garlic parmesan fries are delicious. If you're looking for a snack to have with your beer, this would be my recommendation. I have to begin this review by stating that I had orginally planned on going to the Daly City location for there wood fired pizza. Upon arrival to the Daly City spot I knew immediately it was odd. Everything is contactless, find a table, sit down, keep your mask on. Scan the QRC code, order, and be patient. You cannot sit at table for to go orders of beer, and you need to order food. I say be patient, because a dude was rude (yes, I said it) to the waitress because she asked them to NOT sit at the table if they were NOT drinking and eating there. He proceeded to say she was rude to his wife as she walked away. No, she was just communicating the COVID rules to you , jerk. Ok, the beer, so good. This brewery is definitely up to par with excellent brews, Fieldwork is just down the street, and I overheard a couple say it was a three hour wait, come here! I started with a IPA called anti-freeze, very smooth. I ordered a 4 pack to go. No flights to speak of, but, you can order small 5 oz. pours, which I did, a blackberry Hibou, an ale flavored with blackberries, a Champ Rochaux, which had the bubblieness, is that a word, of a champagne. So good. Next thing I knew, the waitress brought me another full pour, I don't remember ordering, so be carefull when ordering on the app, it's easy and fast, lol. I couldn't drink it all. Now, the food. This spot does not have the wood fired pizzas I had been looking forward to, and I don't think they served food pre-COVID, but I don't care. The selection is sandwiches, grilled panini style, hot dogs and chili dogs. I ordered the cubano, which is pork, ham, pickles and mayo & mustard. I have to say, what a delicious treat to eat while enjoying a delicous brew. The bread was crunchy and had a pleasant buttery flavor. The pulled pork inside the sandwhich was so good and had a nice sweet, bbq flavor. Shredded perfectly and tasted as if it had been cooked a long time. The ham meat was an excellent compliment to the pork, and carefully folded on the sandwich. The sandwich had a dill pickle spear, but on the sandwich itself was a bread and butter pickle, which I don't normally go for, but the sweetness was so good. Also, the sandwich was perfectly wet. Love Gilman Brews! I first heard about them at a Yelp event, so it's been a long time coming that I check out their brewery (mostly because I was pregnant for the first 10 months I lived in Berkeley). No outdoor space is really the only thing that I would love to see. The beertenders are so nice and knowledgeable. They have a huge variety of beers; I love their hoppy ones! Dog and baby friendly, to boot! They have plenty of seating, a huge screen playing sports and they usually have a food vendor or food truck selling eats to enjoy! On a Friday happy hour during NBA finals, the place was packed, but not uncomfortably so.
