Meeting beers friends in the Bay Area, Tenma Beer Project kept coming up as a recommended spot with awesome owners and amazing beer. Finally with one friend, I visited and it was definitely a highlight of the whole trip. This is clearly a labor of love; the couple that own it brew styles they want including lots of clean and bright styles. This place feels like a brewery from an older time, built on quality and passion. The customer base seemed very local to the area, with regulars coming in for a pint or getting new cans to go. Prices were reasonable for the quality. Unpretentious interior is comfortable with seating, plus dog friendly. If you're a beer fan, this one is worth seeking out. I see them going far. read more

Dropped by while in the area and had a decent experience. I was a bit disappointed that there were no sours on the menu, though not entirely surprised since another nearby brewery didn't offer any either. I'm not much of an IPA or bitter beer fan, so I leaned toward the lighter, crisp options. The bartender recommended "Depends on the Question," a German-style Pilsner. While it had a slight bitterness, it was also smooth, grainy, and subtly sweet. Even though I typically prefer sours, this one broadened my beer palate in a pleasant way. Bonus points for the glass full of Smarties candy... never really see breweries offer free candy. I'd definitely stop by again whenever I'm in the city. read more

Just the best local microbrewery. Fantastic staff and even better beer. Will hang out here every week until they outgrow the space bc they're that good. Highly recommended if you love traditional german style pilsners and west coast IPAs. read more

Visited yesterday and was greeted warmly when we arrived! We had looked forward to visiting for some time so it was exciting to final be drinking their beer! The bartender was friendly and let my partner try a splash of something. We got the What Once Was Timeless Pilsner (which was really delicious, smooth) and Onward from Yesterday pale ale. Both were great! We also had their West Coast IPAs and I loved the Pulsewidth Modulation! All of our drinks were the short pours, which was just enough beer! They had a food truck, Don Taco, which had good and affordable food. The space was small, but welcoming and felt like a place you could go to with friends or hang out and have a beer with a book. Lots of rotating beers, always something new every time I visit! The beer menu must have many small batch creations. I especially enjoy their IPAs while I've had other great drinks as well! The customer service is great and the staff can provide their expertise if you have trouble choosing a drink! They do not have food available, but they offer suggestions on nearby food that you can bring and eat while enjoying a nice cold glass. I usually bring my take-out to eat with a beer here! read more

Located at the intersection of Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley, Tenma is easy to get to no matter which direction one is coming from . Without any exaggeration, this is currently my favorite brewery in Northern California. The space where Tenma found its home used to belong to Novel and is on a smaller side. Especially knowing that the whole brewing operation is in the back. The front of the room is reserved for the taproom operation with Dana always ready to answer any questions or give recommendations. The brewer Brennan is no stranger to quality craft beer, with ton of experience behind him. If you like the smell of wort, then this us is the place for you as every time we stopped by, there was magic happening in the brew house. While Tenma's hoppy beers are top of the line, I was very impressed with their pilsners and lagers which were all ultra crispy and could easily stand on their own next to the best German or Czech examples. Due to the size of the operation the only place where I can find Tenma's beers (at least for now), is right at the source. While it would be nice if they could expand a little and start distributing, in case it stays this way, I don't mind making that trip across the bridge every few weeks....The secret is out, Tenma's beer is truly worth that drive! read more

This bar has it all. The beer is incredibly tasty and fresh, the regulars are friendly, it's a great place to have a conversation, and the trivia is top-notch. The brewer loves brewing classic styles -- Czech beer, German beer, IPAs, you name it. There's even a juicy hazy for frat bros. Recently, jerks have started listening to TikToks on speakerphone in inappropriately spaces, like bars and city buses, but the bartenders at Tenma will ask them to use headphones, for which the patrons are always grateful. (If your plan is to blast TikToks in a small space instead of talking to other people, maybe you should just stay home instead of ruining the experience for others. Your addiction is embarrassing.) I love hanging out at Tenma. It's full of friendly people who remember your name, and the brewer is a true artist who will be sweeping beer awards soon. Treat yourself to a pint, sit at the bar, and say hi! I can't wait to have a fulfilling conversation with you. read more

Checked this spot out based on a Reddit recommendation. Great beer, nice vibe. It's an easy and nice walk from Ashby BART as well which makes it convenient even if you're not local. Would recommend getting a taster flight for your first time as their lineup changes pretty frequently. Not every beer I tried was my favorite but none were straight up bad and the price was very reasonable. Not sure if I'd make a deliberate detour to go here again since it's not near me at all but it's definitely worth trying at least once. read more

Remember when things weren't so corporate and Instagrammable? Yeah, it's hard to imagine. But, Tenma is that throwback. It's a small brewery in a little garage across from my favorite sushi restaurant, Mujiri. And the beer is good. I didn't love the rice lager, but I did love the New Zealand pale ale. They have what looks like 8-10 varieties going at a time. My husband walked away with a few six packs, so he enjoyed it. They have menus available for local spots, if you're hungry, along with a few snacks like chips and such for sale. I see people comparing it to Novel, the previous brewery which I mean, c'mon, that one isn't standing, this one is. Support small businesses. Seemingly, most nights they have some sort of community oriented programming from trivia nights to sip and draw nights. Most recently, we popped in for a pre dinner beer and we were able to catch a round of their Thursday night trivia, and it was so fun. Overall, Tenma is bringing those friendly, casual, authentic vibes while serving up some solid beer. If you're looking for more of a brew pub, this is not it. A big score if you live in the 'hood. read more

We came here Saturday around 6:45pm. They are fairly new. They only have malty, light, and hoppy beers. We liked the Portal of Stardust Hazy IPA and A Different Tempo Hefeweizen. Only indoor seating. There's also board games for you to play. Street Parking. read more

It still brings me great sadness that Novel Brewery closed down at this location that Tenma Beer Project has taken over. The beers offered by Tenma Beer Project are not even close to the vast offering that Novel once had. I tried two IPAs during my visit and both of them were unremarkable. When I stopped by today, the outdoor seating area was not open for seating. Additionally, other than a few small packaged snacks, there wasn't food available at the brewery. It's clear it will take some time for Tenma to develop its space, beer variety, food offering, and event schedule. Until then, there are better breweries in the area to check-out. read more

Husband is hard of hearing so his phone volume was up while watching a video from his friend. Bartender came up abruptly and demanded he turn his volume down. Didn't have the cognitive ability to request directly -- instead yelled from halfway down the bar. Closed our tab and left, won't come back. Figure out your customer service or close so another brewery can take over. read more

Fantastic beer. I was in town for work and had to make it out to Tenma to see their new spot. I had Fade into the Shadows (a Schwarzbier) and Magma Chamber (an Irish Red Ale). The Schwarzbier was smooth and toasty. It was true to the style with notes of coffee, chocolate, and caramel. The Irish Red was malty and caramely, also smooth and well balanced. The staff were super nice and I loved the modern vibe inside. The owners, Dana and Brennan, were also there and showed us around. They were really cool and it's clear they know what they're doing, as made even more evident by their recent GABF medal hanging over the bar! Congrats to them :) read more

Love this place! Stopped by for the first time last weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the awesome selection of beers on tap. Had an amazing rice lager that was out of this world, and some other really great pilsners. The music was also perfect Friday night vibes. Service was awesome and we will be back! Fun little neighborhood spot. Used to be another brewery that closed down, so happy Tenma came in and revived! read more

Like they are good, but they are $10 beers. It's so frustrating. Okay, so they are $8 beers. Before tax and tip. $8.82 after tax. So even if you want to tip like an asshole, it's a $9 beer. If you are tipping even somewhat reasonably, it's a $10 beer. If you are tipping the 20 percent expected, it's closer to an $11 beer. Who is this sustainable for? I wish I could come and support this local haunt more. Enjoy this third place. But f*ck. read more

I found out about Tenma Beer Project at the Jack London Brewing District block party earlier this summer and visited shortly after. I sampled nearly the whole tap list and was thoroughly impressed by both the breadth and quality of the offerings. Very few breweries around offer a Dunkel (which was excellent) in addition to very high quality IPAs. My only gripe is that I don't live closer to be able to frequent more easily, but I will certainly visit many times in the foreseeable future. Cheers! read more

World class beer. Warm and friendly service. I tried the IPA that just won multiple medals at the IPA fest in Hayward. It did not disappoint. Thankful they had a few cans left so I could take some home. Everything I tried was absolutely outstanding. I highly recommend Tenma. read more

Now for the famous outdoor seating, if you REALLY want to go here, please just eat inside. Yes it was cute, but leaves and seeds were constantly falling into our hair, drinks, and food. Maybe it would've been nicer to have lids on your cups so you weren't literally drinking around Lord-knows-what in your cup. Hopefully the seeds from the trees have protein, because I know I ate some. Finally, about the actual food, I will say that it was pretty good, and it came quickly! However, a burger from in n out or a pizza from blaze pizza is around the same quality for a more reasonable price. As for the pizza, it was pretty good and able to be shared with 2-3 people. Just avoid the "spicy" fries because they are just regular fries drowing in paprika lol. Overall, there are so many other cute spots like this around so just go to one of those.

Firstly, I love GT and really enjoy their beer and visiting their taprooms. Full disclosure I'm a former professional brewer so I take beer VERY seriously! I've also worked in the service industry and understand that role. I know sh*t happens and I typically extend grace but if you know craft beer like I do you know when there's a great batch of something you love, there's nothing else like it and you will DRIVE to get it. Hop profiles shift, strike temps can differ, water chemistry varies, salts do only so much so a great batch is a great batch!! My issue is simple, when I order and pay for beer online for pickup, I expect that my beer will be there at the scheduled time. This is the second occasion that this has happened at this location, thus me writing this review. I don't have to tell anyone how rough it is driving through Bay Area traffic to pick up an order in another city and finding out once you arrive that your item isn't there. In this instance the beer-tender was extremely nonchalant and almost flippant so of course I left with a level of frustration that didn't just go away. What happened to accommodations when situations like this happen, ya know a small discount on the beer that I end up buying as a replacement. Telling me my card was refunded and you tried to call me when I have no voicemail from you isn't it. Surely my inconvenience deserves some sort of nod of acknowledgment. Overall it's an experience that leaves a bad taste, an off flavor if you will! It ended up being much spicier than expected, which caught me off guard a bit, but the flavor was still good. The crust really stood out, with a great texture that held everything together well. Even though we only had the pizza, everything coming out of the kitchen looked really yummy and worth trying on a future visit. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable, making it easy to hang out for a while.

Area is also great because of the distance of the three breweries right there. I put Bay Area or even Northern California breweries up against any region in the US. I firmly believe we have the best breweries quality-wise of anywhere. They had the flea market going while we were here which was kind of funny to me because most of the sellers had the same thing but it's nice to have and this is a perfect place for it. A tall older white man, who looked to be in his 50s, refused to tell us his name the entire time…read moreand insisted he was "not the owner." The service was terrible from start to finish, and he aggressively pressured my friend into tipping. What shocked me most was that the moment my friend turned around and walked away, I was standing outside clearly saw him raise both hands and flip us off. The beer itself was genuinely very good, which makes this even more disappointing. I feel sorry for the employer who hired someone like this to represent their business. I'm writing this review in hopes that no other customers have to go through the same experience again.
