Ginger is good for a lot of things - a place for passable and affordable sushi, a place for make your own noodle or fried rice bowl with usual protein choices, six sauce choices, and lots of veggie toppings offerings. They do feature lots of specific Chinese dishes as well but rarely do you see someone eating these in the dinning area which almost always has room. They are organized and quick with the rare exception of big sushi orders coming in at once. And the pick three sushi rolls is a common and my go-to order. Eel avocado, fried sweet potato, and peanut avocado is my eclectic mix of choice (picture below). Dining companions who opt for the bowls often get a lid and take home leftovers (or they should). And hot tip - pay with cash and get a free fountain drink! It is located right in the middle of Court Street, the main drag for Athens. Parking isn't always available right in front at meters but the parking garage is a block away. They do quite a bit of delivery business as well. read more

The concept is kind of like an Asian food version of a Chipotle, where you select elements to be added to your bowl-- a base, protein, veggies, toppings and sauce. I chose lo mein noodles as my base, steak, broccoli, edamame, onions, and shredded carrots. I added teriyaki sauce and was given a packet of Yum Yum sauce when I picked up my freshly stir-fried bowl. It looked and smelled incredible. I also ordered crab rangoons. My bowl was well-balanced and tasty. It was a good portion and combined with the rangoons, I was quite full. The dining room was large and a little disheveled, but I was there after lunch time- around 3 o'clock. There are numerous tables and the room is quite bright. There's an island in front of the counter with a beverage station, cutlery, napkins and other assorted necessities. Decided to have a little treat and this was my first time here. There was a sign to save like 5 dollars on the app. So I did that, just for a bowl was over 15 dollars. I go inside and my order was done later than it said it would be. Which I don't mind. Later on I find out while I pick my food up, that the prices are cheaper in the restaurant than in the app. I was upset, since it advertised that it was a savings, everything was a dollar or two cheaper in the restaurant. My chicken was dry and hard with the bones still inside. Rice was fine. The place had dirty tables but was decent compared to some places. Very loud. Our friend recommended this place to us as we were driving by Athens! So happy we stopped! We came on a Sunday around 3:30 pm. Parking was free on a Sunday and we were able to get a spot very close to walking distance of Ginger. The place is a lot better than it looks like from the outside with lots of seating options. We were able to go up and order right away. It is create your own bowl so you are sure to like it! Love the options available. There are many vegetables and sides to choose from. I loved the noodles. I was sad that there was a limitation to some of sides you could have. But I loved my bowl. I thought the flavors were fun with lots of different sauces to choose from. We have been going here for years, and over the past year, it has been going downhill. The sushi rolls are wrapped so loose that it just falls apart, wontons are less than half filled, if you do a pick up order, they short you on items in bowls and poke bowls. Over the past few months, their spicy level has gone from perfect to ridiculously hot, to the point of making my son get sick and the others in our house hold not able to eat the food. Their Chinese dishes are under sauced and taste awful. The seasame chicken tastes like straight mustard no depth in flavor or classic seasame chicken flavor chicken. They have great deals on sushi trays, and you get to pick the rolls on your tray, unlike most other restaurants. Ginger Asian Kitchen is a decent choice is you're looking for something quick and filling. If ordering Sushi, I would absolutely stick to the specialty rolls at the bottom of the menu rather than the more simple, traditional rolls, like the smoked salmon toward the top of the menu. We ordered the specialty 'Mars Roll' and the specialty 'Athens Roll', along with the traditional spicy salmon roll. The Athens Roll was easily the better of the three. It is a tempura Roll with fresh salmon, kani & cream cheese topped with spicy mayo, wasabi & eel sauce. The eel sauce and spicy mayo together is a winning combination. I plan on going back next week and getting the same roll along with perhaps another specialty. I wouldn't recommend the traditional rolls. They seemed to be rushed and just were not visually appealing. The spicy salmon also just seemed to lack flavor and unfortunately just looked like 'mush', the best way I could describe it. Like I said earlier, Ginger is a place to obtain a quick fix, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking to wow someone with a quality sushi dish. read more

Ginger is basically an Asian Chipotle, but no where near Chipotle's level in terms of the food. The only thing that I really like from here are the fried rice bowls. I get either chicken, steak, or hibachi shrimp and it's decent. This is probably my least favorite of the Asian places here in Athens and the sesame chicken is the worst I've ever had in my life!! This is an odd establishment. They do chipotle-style "choose your own" bowls with Asian ingredients but they also do sushi and sashimi, which is kinda cool. In addition, there's even a small Asian grocery store in the basement open until 8! It has a very small selection of interesting Asian grocery products that you won't find at any other grocery store. The bowls have several options for bases (noodles, fried rice, white rice, etc), proteins, veggies and toppings. The bowls are pretty big portions for the price and it's a popular dinner spot for the local college students. I think Ginger Asian Kitchen is cheap tasting but it's not cheap. It's still around since there's no other sushi in town except at the grocery stores, which is actually better for less cost. The Tropical Roll is about $8 something. It's filled with asparagus, avocado, cucumber, and seaweed. The roll was bland and not fresh. It tasted premade like the ones in stores. Those are also much cheaper. It also has bowls that are better tasting. Bowls come with a choice of protein, rice, and vegetables, and you get one or more sauces. The peanut sauce is the best. The Tofu Bowl is about $7. It's big enough for 2 people. This is what I would order the next time if I were coming back here. I say Ginger Asian Kitchen is mediocre but you can find some good value. Such a disappointment. I was so excited to hear that sushi was coming to Athens, and don't get me wrong, their sushi is definitely decent, but the atmosphere in this place could kill even the best tasting food. Way too many employees, except none of them do anything. They just stand around. I went in to try to the frozen yogurt three different times, and every time the toppings were out. When I asked an employee to get more toppings, they proceeded to glare at me, walk to the back, and never come back out. Great service guys- really? Do you want customers or not? If you are going to try to run a business, make it welcoming. If you want people to buy your froyo, put out toppings. I was also bummed to find out the ingredients for the Wok bowls were not fresh. Great value and downright addicting. We love the bowls as you get a ton of yummy food for cheap, but the sushi is also great. Vegetarian options available. Their potatoes are underrated, and I always get double potatoes in my bowl. Tofu is good. Current obsession is the traditional fried sweet potato roll, which comes with this sweet, hickory-like sauce and ends up feeling somewhat reminiscent of chicken. There's also an Asian market downstairs, which is great if you want to try something new or need an item which isn't sold at Kroger/Aldi/Walmart.
