I keep meaning to write a review about Ginger Betty's but end up getting distracted by their wonderful ginger cookies. (in the spirit of full disclosure: I have created photographs for Ginger Betty's a number of times over the last few years. However, I have also very quickly, become a client of theirs as well!) Two weekends ago, I had a grand opening open house at my new photography studio and called up GB's to get an assorted plate for the dessert table. Through a snafu with shipping (not GB's fault), the plate did not arrive the day before as we had planned. I called them up to see what was up. The response to my situation was immediate and decisive: they were ready to drive up a fresh plate of cookies in time for the event. As it turns out, the original plate did show up before the event started. But, the willingness of the GB staff to go above and beyond to make sure we were ready for the Opening was exemplary and so rare in this age. As for the flavor and presentation, I can only speak to the presentation. It looked great and the plate was empty before I got back to it. So, I guess it does say something to the flavor as well! Ginger Betty's is a charming and joyfully frivolous place! The inside looks a bit like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, if it were a bakery. The only reason I gave it 4 of 5 stars is because the frosting on their cookies and cakes is a bit sugary for my taste and they use a ton of it on everything (except the ginger snaps, see below for more on those). I like my frosting on the creamier side. Now for what's amazing about Ginger Betty's! First, their rich breakfast pastries and perfect coffee (both hot and iced). Second, the people who work there. They seem to love working there and know all about the variety of baked goods, what's fresh today, what they can do for a special occasion, etc... Third, their signature ginger snaps, yum! They are the greatest cookies every invented - chewy on the inside, a little crispy on the outside, and a little chocolate drizzled on top. But the reason I really love Ginger Betty's is because you feel like a kid in candy store every time you walk in there. You can't help but be in a good mood when you're there. My coworker just introduced me to Ginger Betty's today and after my first bite I was hooked. They have the perfect ginger flavoring with a buttery aftertaste. They are not too sweet or bitter and the frosting adds a nice sweet kick! On the harder side, I paired mine with tea and it was perfect. Not only are these the most delicious ginger cookies, Betty's profits occasionally actively support great charities and foundations in the Massachusetts area! My cookie today supported the Martin Richard Foundation. The cookies come decorated or plain, you can special order and order online! The website is adorable and easy to navigate. I personally didn't have any interaction with ordering as my cookie was a gift but just based of taste, I cant imagine you would be unsatisfied with your purchase. read more

This is where I go when I'm jonesin' for gingerbread. They get _really_ busy around the holidays, so place your order ahead of time. It isn't easy to make gingerbread from scratch. Why on earth does this place have such high reviews? Is it the packaging? Clever name? It's certainly not because of the taste of the cookies...because there is none. They are like cardboard. Although the first time I tried them I got a batch that was overwhelming with almond extract. Figured, it was a fluke so gave it another try. Maybe others complained about the chemical taste of the extract and she omitted it which is great, but now these cookies have zero taste and the consistency is tough. Not worth the high price she charges. Save your money and your palette. read more

I was extremely disappointed with our visit to Ginger Betty's. The space was very inappropriate to bring a group of children for a cookie frosting party. There were racks of uncovered food surrounding the table that we were directed to. Even if children could always be expected to keep their hands to themselves, it was impossible to avoid brushing up against the racks of food while moving in and out of the cramped space. The staff was brusque and rude. I also overheard a racist comment while we were there, although I'm not sure if it was made by staff or a client. It did not surprise me, though, given that the proprietor is such a vocal proponent of our bigoted president. read more

So I am normally not a huge gingerbread person. I don't hate it and I don't really love it. However I LOVE Ginger Betty's gingerbread cookies! A few years ago a coworker of mine gave me a bag of the gingerbread cookies with chocolate drizzle and I nearly died and went to heaven when I tried them. Literally so soft and delicious! I had never been to the shop but stopped in there today to get some of the cookies to bring in to work for everyone and it was so cute in there. Everyone was very friendly. They nicely gave me a basket to put all my stuff in as I was browsing. They had so much gingerbread...from cookies to house kits to gingerbread men (sports themed, Christmas themed). Went for the first time yesterday for a tray of cookies for a party. The place was crazy busy because of Easter but we enjoyed browsing for a few minutes. We drove a stretch from West Roxbury to find the bakery, but we scored a top shelf gingerbread house kit---fresh baked gingerbread---not like the kind you get in the supermarket kits--that you would never eat for fear of having your stomach pumped. It came with 3 different colored frostings--and tons of different and fun candy. The staff was super nice to my kids and gave them a free cookie that broke with some icing so they could mend it. Although small there is more than enough room to hold tons of little treats exciting for kids of all ages. The staff was friendly and the prices were fair for such intricate edibles. We just went here after eating at grumpy whites...it was a group of five and it was all of our first times being there. When you walk in, you smell deliciousness. The aroma that fills the air is enough to make you want to buy everything. The cookies are all very good. It looks like they make their own ginger bread houses and they all look amazing. Ginger snaps had little flavor and gingerbread men were dry and had little flavor. The inside was cute but chaotic and did not provide organized flow for customers. Gingerbread house kits were sparse candy-wise so I still had to stock up at the grocery store. Staff was super nice and knowledgeable and even offered to help carry things to the car. It was mobbed in there but everyone was still kind and calm. Prices were a tad high, especially given the quality of product. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! Beth makes the best Elephant Ears ever. I do wish they would make more for the day sometimes I come in and they are gone already. I get there cakes for family events and hoidays. The ginger snapes are moist, soft and chocolately. During the holidays the houses are the best and they also make Halloween, houses. I'm sure they can make any house you want if you order one for other religions. The prices are good not over priced like some other places. Kids are allways looking for candy to buy besides cookies. It pains me to write something negative for reasons non-food related, but I feel compelled. I special ordered a crazy expensive (over $100 with shipping) cookie basket for one of my best clients before the holidays and set it up to ship directly to him. They accidentally shipped it right to me, but that happens so I figured no biggie, I'll just call and we'll get it all straightened out. I wouldn't have even been the slightest bit upset but they failed to return several of my calls and emails and I ended up having to ship it on my own dime. He ended up not getting it until after the holidays and I still haven't received a return call or email from Ginger Betty's. Needless to say, I'm disappointed. read more

Wow, drove almost an hour to get here. I stepped into the place and it was like stepping back into childhood and an enchanted German bakery. The smell was incredible. I got my large gingerbread house which was hand made and thick like you made it yourself. Then I bought another. While I was waiting for my houses to be boxed they offered me coffee and even gave me some gingerbread. The gingerbread was the best I have ever had-moist, tasty and not too strong. I saved half the cookie for my husband but never gave it to him. With three kids in the car talking about how good it smelled I pulled the 1/2 cookie from my jacket which they split. They have been asking about eating the gingerbread house. Will definitely be back next year. Glad this place isn't close because those gingerbread cookies were to die for. I love Ginger Betty's. But there is room for improvement. Not all items have prices on them, prompting a search for a staff member that is not busy ( not always easy, since the store can be busy). Also , it is starting to look rather cluttered. Doesn't take away from the quality of the products, but definitely takes away from the cuteness of the place.
