We finally got to Ginger Gourmet. The service was excellent. Staff were attentive and friendly. They have a great bar! Many options and wide selection. We had a sushi boat for 2. I'm giving this place 2 stars based on the fact that it was clean, fairly attractive and the waitress was very kind and attentive. That being said, the food was bland and unappetizing. We got some Spicy Broccoli that despite having asked for it "extra spicy", had zero seasoning or chilies. The Chicken Pad Thai was flavorless and had a few sad pieces of tofu & chicken but no scallions or savory fish sauce flavor. Dear Daughter got some sushi & sashimi that she said were awful and fishy smelling. The price was very low and the quantities were plentiful but we didn't take home any leftovers. New ownership. We've been in many times since the new owners took over and have been pleased. Loved the old place, and the food is not too different yet...(more in a second). Old standby favorites are as good as ever. Ask for the Hibachi rice which is not on the menu. They'll make it as spicy as you please, if desired. Everything was fresh and tasted great. Portions were good as well. Very quiet. Lots of take out but few diners, though it was a Tuesday. Always feel this place doesn't get the love it deserves. A big knock previously were the drinks. Not as good as the place down the street. Well, they seem to have changed that. Apparently the new owners also have a place in Boston, seems they have taken the drinks to the next level. The drinks are now quite, er, potent, to say the least! If you ask for a Mai Tai, you'll be asked normal or white, which was a nice surprise. Bartender will also offer to jazz it up with Tito's for an extra $1. Ask for the "Green Tea" welcome drink if Robin is working. He's a riot! He showed us a few pictures of what they can now do for sushi and the like that aren't on the menu. The photo below is of Salmon being cooked over coffee beans, on blades of lemongrass with a raspberry sauce on the side. If they start offering dishes like this regularly, i think they bring the food to a whole new level. Unfortunately, service was slow. Real slow, even though it was a quiet night. We have been customers for a long time. Tonight we were disappointed with all our food. I ordered my usuals: chicken with broccoli, shrimp egg foo young, chicken amazing and pork fried rice. It was all bland except for the pork -fried rice which looked and tasted like Spanish rice. The shrimp egg foo young was filled with only bean sprouts and onion and each 'patty' had one small shrimp. The brown sauce was lumpy and bland. The chicken and broccoli had no flavor. The chicken amazing was overly sweet. All of the items we have had before at this establishment. I'm not sure if it is the new ownership, but we will not be returning anytime soon. read more

Very happy with our overall experience at Ginger Gourmet! For drinks, we enjoy sitting at the bar and having either a mai tai or scorpion bowl for two. We had the General Gaus chicken combo special, beef lo mein and sushi. This evening we ordered takeout from here got home and found our order incomplete. Called and their options were refund or refund. I choose to leave my family and get then come to the rest of the food needing reheating. What they did for me on my pick I'd hand me a can of coca-cola for my trouble. Insulting and they did not think to say what can we do to make this right? Or least say what kind of soda could we offer you. I haven't been here in almost a year, but went last night for a friend's birthday and it's just the way I left it. By that, I mean delicious and seemingly unnoticed. Located on a main road (appropriately named main st.), this little gem is quietly tucked away in a plaza next to a Stop and Shop. Once you get inside you may be surprised, due to the fact that the storefront gives nothing away about the beautiful and modern interior. But looks aside, their warm and welcoming service, and fresh well prepared food are the the real reason you should go to Ginger Gourmet. For me personally, the red Sox roll is a favorite, but I don't think anything you get here would disappoint. Consistency is a big deal to me and it's something I can count on every time I've come here (knock on wood). Somewhere definitely worth checking out. read more

This a New York Cantonese style place, although it does have some Thai and a fair number of Japanese dishes. We ordered Chinese takeout. It brought back memories of eating takeout food as a child in NYC. The only thing different was the carrots and peas in the fried rice. It was good, better though with bean sprouts (we didn't ask for it to be made that way). Salt and pepper calamari was milder than most, no jalapeños, but was excellent. Spicy chicken wings tasty,but too many broken bones. Portions generous to huge (the boneless ribs appetizer). Beef chow fun very good, it had lots of beef and did have bean sprouts. Shrimp and lobster sauce was more like a soup and didn't come with rice which it really needed. Good flavor. Not perfect but I really enjoyed it. read more

Ginger Gourmet is basically the sister restaurant to Wilmington's Golden Ginger restaurant. Originally from Tewksbury, the Golden Ginger was our go-to for sushi for many years. But in recent months the quality has definitely declined... and after my last visit involved bleachy-tasting water and dirty serving dishes, I decided I really didn't want to go back. Fast forward to now: we've moved, and Ginger Gourmet is much closer than Golden Ginger. I almost didn't want to check it out after my last Golden Ginger experience! But the convenience coupled with memories of the 'golden' days (har har) at Golden Ginger tempted me through the door. Lucky for us, Ginger Gourmet is MUCH better! Where do I start? First and foremost, my biggest qualm with the Golden Ginger was the slipping cleanliness standards. It was tidy and clean for the first couple of years after opening, but no more. Ginger Gourmet is much cleaner - surfaces freshly wiped down, no overpowering bleach smells, and my dishes were clean! (This is sad, I really shouldn't have to be excited about that.) I also really enjoyed the interior design. Golden Ginger is DARK. It's hard to see, and the booths are very low... I feel like a small child at the "adults" table when I dine in because I sit so low compared to the table. But at the Ginger Gourmet the booths are comfortable, clean and well-lit. It actually felt a bit upscale quite frankly, and I wasn't very nicely dressed! We had a bit of a hiccup with service, and our server got the wrong order for my fiancé, but they corrected it quickly. Both orders smelled delicious regardless. I ordered the chirashi sushi - a former Golden Ginger favorite that I stopped ordering because the fish was tasting off. This bowl and presentation were different, and the fish tasted much fresher! My only qualm was that there was wayyyyyy too much rice. Enough rice for side dishes for a family of four. I'm looking forward to going back, and I really hope they continue to maintain the quality here compared to the Golden Ginger. read more

The suggested ordering Seafood Mix but there are a few pieces of seafood and the rest are the canned vegetables. other vegetable dishes are not fresh. They charged $8 for a bowl of rice for 2 people. We were visiting family, was super tired, needed a place to relax, have a glass of wine and food after a long flight. This place is perfect, I prefer sushi and my hubby prefers orange chicken. I only eat sushi at Japanese sushi restaurants, because I am allergic to not fresh seafood. We chose this restaurant since it is less than 5 minutes drive and it has both what my hubby and I wanted. This has become our go to Chinese restaurant since we moved to north reading. I think we've eaten here (always takeout) at least ten times. Prices are phenomenal, food is plentiful and delicious, and service is always friendly and fast. This is also the only (literally) places that serves chinese and sushi where I have found the sushi acceptable. At most places the sushi is extremely lacking. I would never have even given it a chance, but my wife was more daring than I, and I'm happy she was. Even the sushi is reasonably priced. I like that I am able to order miso soup with my chinese meal. That is a definite plus, and again unique. Rest of the family also enjoys their egg drop and their spicy wonton soups. Grab ran goons are also piping hot, plenty of filling, and delicious. The only thing I had here that I didn't too much care for was the eggplant in garlic sauce. I actually wanted chicken and eggplant and they must have misheard me in the phone. I was driving when I placed the order so I am not even going to pass the blame here. Overall super happy with this place. As long as you are ready for Americanized Chinese, you should be pretty happy here. read more

Found this restaurant in a coupon magazine that was mailed to our home then the YELP reviews convinced us to try it. Arrived on a Sunday evening a bit before 5 pm. The outside is deceiving, the inside is very nicely done. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress also came over immediately with menus and fried wonton wrappers with a sweet duck sauce for dipping, then asked for our drink order. We ordered just water. Upon her return, we ordered the vegetarian steamed dumplings for an appetizer and proceeded to plow through the menu which spans about 6 or 7 pages. The dumplings were hot and tasty served with a soy based dipping sauce which was perfect, it's often too salty. For entrees, we ordered: the steamed chicken and vegetables with brown rice, the spicy beef (mild spice) with string beans with brown rice and the shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer as our 3rd entree. Our entrees arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The beef was very tender and had just the right amount of spice. We loved that it was not swimming in sauce and not covered with oil. The steamed chicken/vegetables was plentiful and came served with a very light ginger sauce which looks almost like a soup. We didn't use the sauce, instead used the sauce from the beef. Without any sauce, the steamed dish was a bit bland. The tempura was excellent ... 2 shrimp, 2 sweet potato slice, 1 large mushroom, 1 large broccoli crown, 1 eggplant and 1 tarot root slice. The batter was light and crispy. Overall, a VERY good meal. Service was also great, very cordial but not overbearing. Total bill including tax and use of $5 coupon, $38. Can't beat that for dinner and the amount of food we received. Really a 4.5 star rating but half stars aren't possible. The .5 is reserved for steaming brown rice vs. warm, serving hot oolong tea along with the water, WIFI access and a fortune cookie at the end. Came here after looking at the reviews on Yelp. We were in North Reading for other reasons and needed a place to eat for lunch. The decor was very nice, Asian modern. They have the usual lunch special choices - each dish comes with a choice of hot and sour soup, wonton(?) and miso. Then you get a choice of white, brown or pork fried rice. Finally you also get a choice of spring roll, chicken finger(?) or a rangoon. To venture out of my Americanized choice of General Gau's chicken, I ordered the coconut shrimp. 5 large shrimp were lightly fried - the batter was not heavy at all. But instead of fried coconut pieces surrounding the shrimp, it was a light coconut sauce that was drizzled on them. I enjoyed that difference. My husband ordered the 2 roll maki special. It came with an asian garden salad and miso soup. He said that the fish was very fresh and he finished his rolls very quickly!
