We moved to the area and this is our second attempt at a good Chinese restaurant. Ordered take out. The Szechuan Chicken was relatively tasteless and not spicy. The Lo Mein had an odd flavor to it, so much so we threw it away. This is all relative to the chinese restaurants in Lexington, where Asians make up 25% of the population in 2018. Specific comparison is against the Yangtze River restaurant. We probably will not go there again. Had the same experience at China Cusine, just down the road. read more

Gave take-out a try this week. Ordering process was smooth and food was ready in 15 minutes as promised. The lobby and bar area are bright and new and I stuck my head in to see the dining room. Place looks great! Food was not bad. Boneless spare ribs are always a hit in our house and went quickly despite being a bit on the greasy side. Moo shi beef was tasty but had a seemingly small amount of beef. The shrimp lo mein similarly seemed low on shrimp and also tasted just a touch off - can't quite say why. The Szechuan spicy chicken was hot and tasty! Overall, a good amount of food at a very good price. I'd summarize as high on value and average Chinese food. We'll go back to try the bar and sushi for sure. read more

The fried wontons/duck sauce were a nice touch; very much akin to chips/salsa in a tex-mex restaurant. They were also necessary due to the incredibly long wait due to it being a Friday night before a weekend blizzard. The food arrived after a bit of a wait, but it was well worth it. Although standard American-Chinese food, it was cooked delicately and with care. Not your usual grease-laden slop that fills the plate. The three-appetizer combo was awesome: we went for the boneless ribs, beef teriyaki, and boneless chicken fingers. I went for a chef's special (crispy chicken in a szechauan sauce with onions, peppers, pineapple) and the wife chose a soft crab sushi roll. Each dish was delicious and prepared with care. The wait staff was superb, continually filling our water glasses and apologizing for the delay. They were nothing if not attentive to our needs. read more

Let me start by saying that I am very picky about my sushi. I was in town for work, and looking for something yummy. Don't be fooled by Ginger Gourmet being in a strip mall, I was wary too -it does not feel like that inside at ALL. The atmosphere is very welcoming; place is well decorated. The server was over right away, and was extremely friendly. She gave me some "chips"-which were essentially fried dough with duck sauce. A little weird, didn't really eat them, but a nice gesture. Everything-from my spring rolls to meal- came out very quickly (which was good, 'cause I get hangry) and the sushi was SO DELICIOUS! They even put a Christmas tree on my plate and some "snow" (see the pic)! The server was so on top of every little thing I might need, and at the end gave me some kind of wall scroll gift I've yet to open. She was so adorable! We have been to Ginger Gourmet several times since they opened and we love it! Tonight we ordered Chinese take-out for the first time (usually eat sushi in the restaurant) and everything was great. The Seafood Delight has a decent amount of seafood that was perfectly cooked. The Chicken Udon was very tasty. The egg rolls had whole, small shrimp in them and were excellent. We've also had sushi there a few times and it's excellent - better than the Chinese food. It's fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. I haven't had a roll yet that I dislike and definitely have a couple favorites (Yellow Dragon Roll and Treasure Island Roll). The waitstaff, barstaff and sushi chef are all very friendly and add to the relaxed yet trendy feel of Ginger Gourmet. We are very happy to have Ginger Gourmet in our neighborhood :-) read more

The wife and I enjoyed a Saturday evening dinner here. The place wasn't too busy, but had some live music, and nice decor. We started with Crab Rangoon which were great. I had the Crispy Beef, and she had a Dinner Bento Box. The crispy beef was seasoned well, but wasn't very crispy at all. My wife said her Bento Box was fine, but nothing spectacular, the sushi was a highlight. Overall, the appetizer and sides were a hit, the entrees were just OK. Service throughout the meal was great. I would consider it OK Chinese, but there are a lot of places in the area with better quality entrees, but is certainly a viable choice if you're nearby. read more

We decided to try a take-out order because (a) we have a $5 coupon and (b) it was the new Chinese restaurant in town. We typically have take out from China Cuisine and really enjoy their food but it would be great to have two good places to pick from. We order the usual: Crab Ragoon, Salty Spicy Fried Squid, Lo Mein and Fried Rice. And I recognize that it is a new place and probably need time to get it right. I go to this restaurant about 1 or 2 times a month for dine in, and order 1 or 2 times for delivery. This review is for my experience for dine in. I go for lunch with my wife usually on Mondays or Fridays. Fridays has a fair amount of people during lunch, but there's never a problem finding a table. We've never experienced a wait. The table service here is polite, efficient, and consistent. They are quick to get your drink order, fast on providing it, and if you need more time on the menu (as my wife often does) they will give you extra time to decide. They don't forget about you, and are literally back to the table in under 5 minutes. The food here is high quality. Since the recent addition of an oyster bar I am in seafood heaven. The past part (aside from the delicious oysters) about receiving them at the table is how the chef prepares them. No erroneous bits of shell left over from the shuck. You can tell that the chef cares about the preparation and presentation of them, and that is certainly not lost on me. Right now, they only have 2 kinds Duxbury and Blue Points. I hope in the future they add more. I would love to try other varieties here. I get the lunch bento box each time I dine in. Usually, I go for the shrimp bento. It's teriyaki marinade and large pieces of deveined shrimp mixed with vegetables have been excellent. Plenty of sides in the bento too, rice, pot sticker, salad, California roll. Comes with a soup to start. Our last lunch bill was very reasonable. We had 6 Duxbury oysters, 2 shrimp bento boxes, and 2 sodas for $39. This will not be our last time here. This is the very best Chinese/Japanese food that I have had. It beats any other place on the North Shore and Southern New Hampshire. The sushi is exquisite, fresh, and very decorative, and pleasing to the eye.the staff and management are very pleasant, and knowledgeable, and interact with clientele. I and my family have dined in many Chinese and Japanese restaurants from Boston to Southern New Hampshire and we now go nowhere else. The restaurant is always very clean, but I always look for clean bathrooms in a restaurant, and Ginger Gourmet's bathrooms are always day or night exceptionally sparkling clean. This place is a hidden gem. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. It's an adorable restaurant inside. My husband and I have been coming here just about every week for the past year. We used to have to go out of town for decent sushi, but the sushi here is amazing, fresh, and beautiful. My favorite is the spicy tuna roll or the New Hampshire roll. Sashimi salad is also a favorite. Meals from the kitchen have all been high quality too and they don't mind special orders. They will make pretty much anything you ask for. The staff is very warm, friendly, and efficient. After having been there only a couple times they remembered us, and remembered our preferences. That means a lot. It's rarely very busy because most people get takeout. I definitely recommend coming in and sitting down to enjoy your meal. read more

I stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a new sushi place in the area and decide to give it a try. I was hesitant at first because it looked like every roll was either fried or tempora or had crab meat or eel. Maybe I'm a sushi snob, but I like my sushi without the extra filler and I'm not a fan of crab meat or eel. Those criteria cut down the selection from which we could choose. We ended up with the seared tuna appetizer, which was decent. Nothing to write home about but I might order it again. For sushi - we got a special Honey something-mer-other (maybe Honey Ginger?) with scallop. It was delicious! Also had a Spicy Salmon Maki and a House Special Spicy Maki. The menu says the House Special Spicy Maki is "assorted fish" which made us initially a bit nervous but decided to give it a go.... it was really good. Really fresh and tasty and had a combo of salmon or tuna and scallop and other fishes inside. I wish there were more fancy special rolls without friend stuff and ell or crab but I guess I'm just picky. I will definitely be back. read more

I live right down the street from this place and finally tried the food there - for the second time now. Got to say, it was better than I thought it'd be. The Szechuan beef or chicken with spicy chili is REALLY good, especially if you like hot food. The mongolian beef was also very tasty. Just noticed they have scorpion bowls there, too...was is exciting considering it's in walking distance to my house! I would say the only thing I wish they'd do differently is offer more authentic Chinese dishes that they do so well, and not bother with the sushi and other common American Asian standards that are fairly common in the area. read more

I was bored on Sunday and decided to stop in for a cocktail at the bar. I have never been to this place before but was always curious about it. I liked how it was in the strip mall and the parking was easy. The staff and bartender was super friendly and I was offered a drink within a minute of sitting down, that's something I really like especially if your alone somewhere. It just makes you feel more comfortable. I wasn't ready yet though, and wanted to look over the menu more. As I scanned the drink menu I was blown away at the low prices I was seeing. I was happy because everywhere now is so expensive and one drink and a tip can run you almost $20!!! This place was affordable. I saw customers engaging with the sushi chef and bartender which is always a positive thing to see. I didn't look at the food selection but next time I plan on staying longer and maybe even eating. We came here the very first night they opened for business. Sushi was fresh and very good. My husband enjoyed the crab legs and another couple eating there as well ordered the crab and thought it was very good. Dinners were generously sized, beautifully garnished and presented, and quite tasty. We ordered the two delight and the mango shrimp. We also tried the green tea fried ice cream, which neither of us had before and we would definitely order again. Tonight was our second time eating in the restaurant and Simon (manager) and Miya (waitress) recognized us immediately and remembered that we were there a month ago and were celebrating our wedding anniversary that day. I was very impressed with that level of customer service. One month later and the food quality has not decreased: fried calamari was tasty, my husband ordered his new favorite the two delight and I ordered the Kung Pao chicken- the ingredients were fresh and well seasoned. Not too much batter on the General Gao's which seems to be the norm at most Chinese restaurants. This place is now one of our regular places to order from and we highly recommend it. read more

The drink selections seemed somewhat limited--especially the Sake. My buddy had a Mai Tai and said it was pretty good. When Ginger first opened we came once a week, then there was some staff turnover and the quality of the sushi wasn't the greatest. We actually felt sick twice so we didn't go back for months. Well recently we went back in just for a drink (white mai tai is delicious!) but ended up eating there and we got some sushi, chicken pad thai and some wings - ALL were delicious. We've tried just about every Chinese place in the area over the past decade - Ginger is the place we keep coming back to every time. Consistently excellent, nothing disappoints. We usually get 4-5 different things and have found every other place seems to be good at somethings, bad at others, for example, good beef & broccoli but awful chicken fingers, good steamed ravioli, terrible chicken w/ mixed vegetables etc...Ginger Gourmet we think has the best of everything - it's the only place we go to these days. There are at least 15 Chinese food places closer for us (Andover) Ginger in Reading is worth the trip. Fresh, clean, nice bar, great food, service and friendly attentive staff. This my favorite restaurant in town. Also the strongest drink in town. Ask for Simon's regular margarita. I get mine with no salt, no fruit. Strongest drink i can have unless it's a shot. No one in this town or neighboring towns makes a stronger drink. If you want to eat healthy get teriyaki salmon or chicken chop suey with no corn starch. Only reason for the four star is portion size for the soups are rather small (sometimes I go in for just soup), and they are on the more pricey side...
