I've been coming here since I was a kid - the GH was always a much- anticipated treat between Salem and Detroit. The food's always been fine, but the gingerbread and ice cream were the main attraction! Stopped today to bring my husband for the first time. The service was S-L-O-W. The gingerbread was out of a package and heated in the microwave, and nothing like I remember. More like a nutmeg muffin. The icecream had a weird consistency, More like ice milk. Overall a highly disappointing visit to an old fave. Next time, we'll just drive on past. read more

This place is awesome! Been going here since I was a kid! Note, I only live 10 mins from it now and use it as a treat restaurant! I called them to see when they close the other day, and not only did they stay open later, but they let me place an order so I can pick it up before they left for they night. So nice! The burgers are delicious with the option of elk or bison, I mean come on, can't find that very often! Curly fries are amazing and the pineapple shakes are to die for! Now *that's* how you run a restaurant!! We had great food. Child and I had burgers. Very tasty, very fresh. Very simple, but in a great way. I'm very burnt out on gourmet burgers. I just want a darn good burger. But, my wife's fish was raw and undercooked. She brought it up and they immediately redid it. The next one was almost as bad. They were so apologetic and thankful for our patience. My wife finally got a burger because they said they didn't know what was going on with the fish. Every single person in the kitchen and behind the counter came out to ask our forgiveness and see if we were ok. They even offered us a free ice cream (my daughter took them up on that :) ). And after all that they brought out a cash refund of my wife's meal. And apologized again. Great crew, great owners, great restaurant. Look, no restaurant is perfect. There will always be a mistake at some point. It's how you act when that happens. Don't make the guest feel uncomfortable asking to have it fixed. These guys set the bar on how to do it right and treat the customer like you *want* them to be there (and to come back). It's a great burger stop on the highway. Their breakfast are good as well as their burgers, shakes, fries, tots. For a while, I let these mixed Yelp reviews prohibit me from eating there. However, one day in a pinch I stopped by and was so pleasantly surprised that I now go there most of the time for a local Burger. I've never had anything close to a negative experience there and I've been there dozens of times now. Definitely give this place a try if you're considering stopping by. This was the place when I was a kid to eat...THE PLACE. But the thing with age is this: it's best to not return to a place you loved as a kid -- because it won't be as good -- 100% of the time. I have been going to the Gingerbread House for 15 years. When my parents lived in Lyons it was a real treat for the family to the gingerbread house. I stop by almost every time I pass the place. Nothing has changed in 15 years; the inside is warm and cozy. The workers are nice to locals and passersby. The food is hot and tasty; they make the food to order. So it does take a little while to get your food. They aren't a fast food place. You can sit down and enjoy your meal without someone trying to push you out. read more

My family and friends would go here just about 2x's a week during the summer on our way to Detroit Lake. Some friends and I had a craving for it yesterday and drive 30min to get there. WORST service i have EVER had. We asked the lady about different burgers as she rolled her eyes and wrote the order wrong. I offered to pay for the person in front of me so she stompped rudely to grab the ticket she just hung like everything was a inconvience for her. She snapped at my 5yr old son for touching a cookie that we were planning on purchasing with the order. She was EXTREMELY rude! Not only that I was so disgusted with the attitude this lady had decided to not order and drive to Stayton to eat. Anyone traveling that way my suggestion is stop in Stayton before getting out of food areas. read more

Not what i expected the prices to be for the style of the inside of the restaurant. We took our food to go, it was not a comfortable atmosphere unless you are the group of old guys chatting down in the corner. Service not so great, but the food was cooked well. Why 1 star rating after a one time visit? Im a contractor and a foodie from SF. I am also new to the Cascade area working. Stopping at least 1 a week for breakfast burritos, lunch burgers, and yes the Gingerbread shakes during the week. I think its pretty descent. Not nearly as good as Trexler Farms. Breakfast burritos kick ass. Weekends tend to have less quality food because of a change in staff, often with many restaurants. Yes the fat burger patties are frozen, but they do offer buffalo burgers and curly fries. read more

My husband and I decided to go out for dinner and Lyons is a pretty small town, so we went to the only American restaurant. It was not good at all. My husband ordered the bacon bacon cheeseburger and I ordered a turkey sandwich. The burger was shoved in the bad and wasn't even put together. The bun was soggy and the patty was cold. My turkey sandwich tasted like your average "camp sandwich" meaning a sandwich you make for a day trip to the beach or while camping without bringing very many ingredients and with cheap stuff you pick up at Walmart on the way out of town. I could've made a better burger and sandwich at home. The milkshakes were good but so overpriced. Seriously, $8 for a milkshake!?!! The food was very overpriced too. We had to wait 10 minutes before they even acknowledged we were standing at the counter. Save yourself the money and the disappointment, go to the dragon inn instead. read more

Spent the day at Detroit Lake and decided to stop for dinner to support the local community. Nonexistent service. Waited while the gal helped another table. As she was taking their order they obviously were out of items. She was saying they were out of a lot of items since the owner had been on vacation. Never came to our table. Went and asked for a menu. Never came to see what we wanted. Waited and waited. Thought she was coming to get our order and instead went and sat down with a friend at the table right behind us. My husband and I stopped by this restaurant on our way to check out a property to rent. We ordered our food and sat down to wait. My one year old began playing with the sugar packets on the table. He did not put any of them in his mouth, nor did he open any of them and make a mess. He was just moving them around the table. The waitress brought us our food and immediately ask that he stop playing with them. When we explained we would put them all back before we left, she said she didn't want his "germs all over them." I told her she was incredibly rude and we immediately took our food and left. NOT family friendly at all. We plan on moving out to this area and I will never set foot in that place again. read more

I took my fiance here on 10/28/13 @ 12:30pm. We walked in and their was some locals in already. The older lady took our order and when my finance ask for her meal the lady had the body language that said she was not happy to serve us because we were not local. Then my fiance asked for a peanut butter and chocolate milk shake this lady really looked pissed. After we got our cheese burger baskets and at $8.00 each it tasted nasty. I met some friends for breakfast prior to a hike at the Gingerbread House. After finishing the first cup, I was waiting for a refill which never came. The woman behind the counter just stayed in the back and talked. Finally, another gentleman got up to the counter and asked for me, she then came around to pour coffee. Also, after waiting for approximately 45 minutes, we got our food. Mind you, the restaurant was not horribly busy. When the food arrived everyone's food was cold. If I could give this place no stars I would! Ok for starters the food is mediocre but if its the only carry out place to go to you make do. But today was the last day that place will never ever get any business from me. I always felt that some of the staff was rude but I brushed it off I am from the city I am kinda used to not so good customer service. The last straw came when I went in to order just a ice cream cone and was ignored while they served the other guest. The woman behind the counter didnt even attempt to acknowledge me she served a guy behind me and then just walked off saying nothing. Im an not trying to accuse this place of being redneck but I felt very unwelcome and the fact that all the other " white" patrons were served and I was left there to look like a fool angered me very much. It's been a few years since I have been here. Came here on Memorial day and ate with the family. We tried the Bacon Bacon Cheeseburger. This seemed to be a handmade patty filled with bacon and then topped with bacon and cheese! It was really good and my entire family loved it. On the way home we stopped back by and got Gingerbread A La Mode and it was excellent as always. The only downside is it is a tad on the expensive side but not too bad. read more

Isn't your "restaurant style" place. Quick food served in your typical red cafeteria baskets, mainly fried foods and processed foods. Slightly overpriced, 8-9 dollars for a fried chicken sandwich and fries, can get the same at a fast food joint with a drink for less. The patio area is nice for a hot day.
