We were heading to visit family in the area for dinner and were asked to bring dessert. While driving through Stayton, my wife remembered The Lovin Oven from years ago. We also recalled that there was some connection to Gerry Frank's Konditorei in Salem, which immediately caught our interest. After doing a little research, we discovered there's a deep and fascinating history linking the two businesses. The Lovin Oven began in 1983, when founder Doreen Helmemn operated the bakery out of her home. In 1993, the business expanded into a small storefront in downtown Stayton after being purchased by Mike and Valerie Schultz. Mike, who was formerly a logger, was personally taught cake decorating by the original founder, an origin story that adds to the bakery's charm and authenticity. One of the most interesting details we learned is that The Lovin Oven is the primary baker for Gerry Frank's Konditorei in Salem, a partnership that dates back to the 1980s. That relationship grew even stronger in 2017, when the Schultzes became co-owners of the Konditorei. Many people enjoying desserts at high-end restaurants throughout the region may not realize that their cakes were baked in Stayton. The Lovin Oven is especially well known for its Champagne Raspberry cake, Marionberry cheesecake, and an impressive variety of gourmet bars and cookies. Their menu also includes cakes, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls, brownies, cupcakes, and more, something for just about every dessert preference. The bakery itself is housed in an industrial-style building that includes the production bakery, a storefront, and a small seating area where you can enjoy your treats on site. The outside is a unique with a black painted brick exterior. The customer facing area of the inside is industrial. We picked up a selection of cupcakes to take to dinner and were quickly back on the road. The cupcakes were a hit, everyone loved them, and they disappeared fast. It felt great to share something local with such a rich backstory. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and we're glad we stopped. Absolutely delicious! I had a piece of carrot cake and a peanut butter bar. The carrot cake is to die for! Made from scratch, so moist and tasty! Icing is just as delicious. And the peanut butter bar, that's just a little slice of heaven on earth! If you like peanut butter, this is a must have. I will be going back on my way out of town tomorrow morning to try a cinnamon roll and several more slices of carrot cake to take home! The ladies working were very nice. There were no carrot cake slices out and when I asked if they had any she said she had a cake she just needed to cut it, if we didn't mind waiting. Only here for a week and already tried chocolate blackout, afterschool cake (chocolate frosted yellow cake), carrot cake, and a cinnamon roll! Do I have a sweet tooth? The blackout was my favorite! They also serve a very good coffee and have a dining area if you want to enjoy your cake there. They've got a large busy cake kitchen meaning these guys are well liked in this community. The cinnamon roll was good, but I recommend they just can it cinnamon roll cake! Even make it look like a cake. The dough is very cake textured not like a traditional cinnamon roll. I thought I would try the bakery my daughter keeps taking about. There was a group of people ordering when I arrived, but my wait time was short. Their pastry cases are packed with individual slices of cake and the selection ranges from the traditional (the "Afterschool", which is yellow cake iced with chocolate buttercream) to the fancy (Champagne , white cake filled with champagne mousse, iced in buttercream). I selected the Raspberry Lemonade (Lemon cake filled with lemon filling and fresh raspberries, iced in raspberry cream cheese icing). My slice was generous and tasted as good as it looked. I took my slice to go, but they have a great area for sitting. I'm already planning what I'll try next time and can't wait to serve one of their creations at our next family event! read more

I hate to give a negative review to something that tastes so good but...We had ordered a strawberry cake early in the week to pick up on Friday. When we got there, they brought out the cake to show us. I told my wife there are no strawberries on top. They said "oh, yeah, we need to get those for you". They went to the back for a minute and came back to tell us they were out of strawberries. They said we could wait for him to run to the store to get some. It bothers me that they knew that strawberry cake was going out but didn't have any for it. Didn't offer to compensate for the inconvenience either. We ordered a cake to be used at a wedding. While the cake was delicious and what we ordered, it was put in a box that was to small, the lid wouldn't close without damaging the cake. And there were no bumpers to keep it from sliding around and hitting the edges of the box in transit. Once it arrived on location we had to do some work to fix it and add decorations to the cake to hide all the imperfections. read more

Chuck B. is right! Lovin' Oven can always be counted on for tasty fare in the heart of downtown Stayton. Well, "always" means Wednesday through Friday....but nevertheless! If you go for lunch their soups are great, if not a little gloppy, but the best on the menu is the Spicy Jack sandwich, piled with meat and a little kick with pepperjack cheese. Cakes are all delicious, especially After School if you can get your hands on it, but the prize treat is the mint brownie.
