My wife has a view Ritter's is overrated; still, I brought her last night for a "pre-theater" dinner date. Because of the time window we had before the show, I called early in the day to see about a reservation. I was told that the restaurant only makes reservations for parties of four or more--okay, that's reasonable. We show up a little before 6 pm in hopes of securing a table. After waiting a few moments to be greeted at the host stand--two employees were having a conversation while we approached, the first question I was asked was "do you have a reservation?". I explained that I'd tried but was told they didn't do that for a party of just two--we were told "oh, that's not what we do". There were three tables near the window, and we were brought to the small, two-top in between two larger tables that could accommodate 3 or 4. I thought about asking for one of the others as it would afford us a bit more room, but decided to just hold my tongue. Again I thought, okay, it's reasonable--they may get other patrons to accommodate. (As it turned out, neither of the other tables got occupied in the whole time we were there.) Our server greeted us about 5 minutes later and brought water to the table and asked if we'd like to see a drink menu. He came back with one about 5 minutes later. I ordered black tea, and my wife ordered a mocktail. The tea came out with honey; before I could ask for milk and Splenda, our server took off. (My wife flagged him over a couple minutes later when he reappeared.) We ordered our meals--a bowl of chicken gnocchi soup and the flatbread platter for my wife. I ordered the butternut squash and goat cheese salad and asked to have chicken added. About 10 minutes later, our server brought my wife's soup--her intention was not to have it an appetizer, but --oh well. The rest of our food arrived via another staff member probably 15 minutes later--not an outlandish amount of time. However after spending a minute looking at my salad (which was very pretty) I realized the chicken breast I'd ordered wasn't included in the salad. Again, our waiter was not to be found so I went over to the host station and asked after it. I was told "sometime the kitchen makes it later"--which seemed a little odd but again, okay--maybe they were searing it and the timing didn't work. About 3 minutes later I was brought a small plate with around 4 oz of sliced chicken on it. It was lovely looking and clearly moist, although the meat was cold--clearly not meant to be hot. We were never offered more water at our table, nor was I offered a refill on the hot water for my $3.50 tea. We realized around 7 that we needed to leave and could not see our server so I again went to the host station and asked if I could just pay the bill. I was told that our server was on the phone with the restaurant manager and they could have him come over in a bit. I repeated my request to simply pay the bill (and not have to wait for our server to be free). Another server came over and accommodated me at a register begins the host station, which was appreciated. Despite relatively mediocre service I tipped a bit over 20 percent--I understand the importance of tips on restaurant staff--il even if I'd prefer that they didn't rely on them for a fair compensation. The quality of our food was decent--but it's unlikely we will be back in the near future together. I know it's a popular meeting place and I may return to socialize with work colleagues--but we will find other places for our next dates. read more

First time I've been to ritters since they opened years ago. Not by lack of trying, just so busy at times I couldn't get a seat. Today we are lucky enough to have a late lunch. We ordered a few items on the menu. As you can see, by the pictures. Atmosphere was amazing. Customer service was great. The food was delicious.I wasn't blown away by any means but it was solid!!! I love the chill vibe and was very much the place for parties as there were two birthdays going on while we were there. The sound level wasn't crazy though. We squeaked in right at the end of happy hour and I'm so happy we did. The steak bites were soooooo good and to be able to get Gluten-free bread with them was lovely. My partner got a mini charcuterie broad and it was plenty of food for a light dinner. Also, had a pineapple upside down and it was great. Our server was so nice and attentive. Nearby to our hotel (The Grand), Ritter's was very convenient. Nice spot, maybe a little too brightly lit inside to achieve a five-star ambiance, but ok. - Beer tap list is adequate but not exceptional. - The spirits list IS quite exceptional (separate menu - ask for it). I decided on a flight (three 3/4 oz shots) of Speyside single malt whiskys with my wife getting a double of Oban. While we knew the Oban would be top tier, the flighted whiskys were new to us. Weirdly, my order of preference came out opposite the order of aging for the three. - Smashburger: one of the better burgers I've had in recent years. Messy, large. The rosemary fries are excellent. Excellent service at the bar (you can order food from the barkeep directly - no need to go to the counter). No loud music. read more

Cozy atmosphere but on the day we came, it took a while for us to get greeted at our table. After finally being greeted, we were never asked what we wanted to drink simply because we didn't want a bar menu. We wanted non alcoholic beverages and we had to ask after we got our food. Our appetizer came out cold. I didn't sent it back because it was clear they were busy and just trying to rush. Horrible!!! Service was molasses slow. We were seated an hour by the time our cold apps arrived. Roasted brussel sprouts were more like slightly steamed. Just underdone and awful! There were probably 8 halves for a total of 4 whole brussels with a couple bacon flakes and a small dollop of glaze. The silver lining is the restaurant's profit margin on those is great! My daughter in law's smash burger wasn't smashed. It was more like two small meatballs on an oversized bun. Server even acknowledged that he should have caught that. My extremely fatty NY strip had zero seasoning and neither did the accompanying hard green beans. In fact the only thing with salt was my daughter in law's sweet potato fries. I think what they did was put all the salt on her fries that was allotted for all the other dishes because they were ridiculously over salted. Wife's beat salad had no dressing and stale hazelnuts. I think they were punishing us for sitting outside. But at least the ambiance was entertaining as we watched a homeless woman help herself to the left over food on the table behind us that was left un-bussed and a meth'd-up dude walk in circles while talking to himself, dropping f-bombs about God. We've been here a few times and it has been great. I'd like to give the "perhaps they're having a bad night" line but everything was so egregious it can only have been intentional. Brick oven pizza amazing- even with gluten free cauliflower crust! The bartenders were so friendly and knowledgeable! Makes the best Bloody Mary's also with house made pickled onions on top of it with other condiments & bacon!-delicious! I won't be coming back here. The tables had dishes on them. It was a Monday at 3pm, not busy with servers who were chatting in the back rather than attending to tables. My party had to literally clear the table we were going to sit down in. Wait staff was friendly but had no sense of urgency in cleaning up. Our food also took 20 mins to come. Food is alright but I don't like this place because of the poor service. We tipped 20% on the tip screen and didn't get our moneys worth. read more

The space is upscale and pleasant, if smallish. The service was ok. But the food was poor. It didn't seem like terrible quality -- albeit commodity restaurant food-- but it just didn't taste that good. It was so smooth I walked over and complemented the bartender. Happy Hour house salad and Mushroom Garlic Goat cheese pizza were everything I hoped. Went here for lunch with my wife and niece. Wife had been here before and recommended the burger, which she and my niece had. I went with the chicken Caesar salad. I'm a regular at Ritters. Their bourbon selection is solid, and has really improved over the years. They also have well made, fresh food and have several gluten free substitutes if you're watching your weight. Recently had their burger with fig spread on a gluten free bun...delicious! The additional seating was smart, and I always get good customer service from the servers and the bartenders. Love a drink they make called the Argonaut - the only time I drink gin, and appreciate being able to try a new bourbon without having to buy the bottle first. Their pours are a tad on the pricey side but, I don't mind so much because of the atmosphere. Would LOVE it if they offered simple syrup made from a non-glycemic substitute like monkfruit, allulose, or erythritol for folks like me who are gluten/sugar free. I'd be in heaven! read more

Great drinks, good food, inhospitable staff. Went to dinner with a coworker. We walked in and asked for a table for 2 and were seated at 5:30. We ordered The Botanist and Bangkok cocktails and they were delicious. Waitress was attentive. I ordered clam chowder (yum!) and the crab/shrimp sandwich. Colleague ordered a burger. I thought it was odd that the soup came out with the meal, instead of before. Then a few minutes later the Hostess walked over and told us there was a reservation for our table in 30 minutes, 6:30. We finished our meals and were chatting for ten minutes when the Hostess came over to tell us, "this is warning number two. You have 15 minutes." We thanked her for the reminder and let her know we would need our check so we could leave. Not a comfortable place for a meal, especially if you want to stay longer than a few minutes. First and foremost! This is half restaurant. Half bar. You must go up to the register and stand around with your menu that a thousand other hands have fondled to make an order. Then you get a letter for your table. When our food came it was by a quiet young man. Masked. So no real social interaction to make the drop more pleasant. It's clean enough, yet small things are left unkempt like the left over Christmas decorations and the tinsel on the floor in the corner as well as the dusty shelving. The heat isn't usually on in many places these days, but if you're sensitive to cold, there is no shelter here. Both doors bring in considerable cold and draft when opened. Not overly outdated but needs a little help in the cohesive department. Bathrooms are clean. Gender neutral but you have to find them first. The young man at the bar was very nice and accommodating. Thank you! The food. The smash burger was served on a baking tray. Not sure why but it's their thing I suppose. You see though, a cold baking tray made cold fries and cold burger from the bottom up. Funny but the ladies at the next table got a piping hot basket of fries. Lucky ladies! The burger tasted pretty good though and it was unfortunate the fries were cold. I bet they taste amazing hot or even warm for that matter. The soup was warm enough. Tomato basil. VERY thick. Cream added. Not bad though. The white chocolate cocoa was not great. It tasted VERY sweet and like syrup was added. Maybe almond? IDK but don't order it. It tasted of a water base not milk. I specifically asked about it being made with milk. I was assured it was. Maybe skim? The flourless chocolate torte. Death by chocolate. The torte was basically fudge. Needed more bake time and the ganache was rather thick as well, the slicked berry on top was old and partly shriveled. There were two of us eating. I took a picture of what remains so you can see. AND nope nothing was taken home. Overall, I noticed a lot of patrons drinking alcohol of some sort. In my experience, establishments with a big bar and drinking patrons don't rely heavily on being on point with their food. It's a shame. We will not return. To the owner or manager. Please do folks a favor and stop serving hot food on ice cold metal trays. If you have staff with masks and menus that are not cleaned after each person. You're sending mixed signals. If your masked staff needs to be there. Try to have someone who isn't masked serving. read more

Ritter's has become a staple of mine whenever I visit the Salem area! Every time I have come, I have sampled something different. I am not a coffee person but I recently had a chai latte from here and it was my most favorite chai I have ever experienced. I can never make them at home the way that they are made in some restaurants. I was in heaven and sipped it for at least 20 minutes to enjoy it even longer! As for the BYO salad, it was just what I needed! Plus I was impressed of the plating, very fresh and great amout of ingredients. It was just what the doctor ordered! I brought my friend my most recent visit and has now become a favorite spot for her trips down to Salem, too. This is a kind of mixed review because there were things I liked and things that would keep me from returning to try again. When we entered it felt like there was no air conditioning running and it was very stuffy and humid inside. Greeter seemed a little stressed. The gal who took our drink order at the bar was very friendly and suggested our drinks. Drinks were delicious, but took WAY too long to receive. The place did not seem that busy. We had dinner at Ritters last night. First time since moving from California. Food, Drinks, and Service were great. Thank you Skylar, you were awesome! If you're big into burgers, sandwiches, salads, and signature drinks, this place is one of the best in Salem! We had the Reuben, the Smash Burger, a house salad and a great Old Fashion. Everyone enjoyed the meal and drinks! My only recommendation would be to have a designated waiting area. The waiting parties were asked to wait off to the side, in front of a table where a party of 8ish were seated for dinner. I assume this made it awkward for the waiting parties, as well as the party/family that was eating dinner. Other than that, I am looking forward to coming back and having another Old Fashion! read more

Who knew a busy restaurant like Ritters does not have waitress/waiters to seat you and take your order?? I did not. Went there with co-workers for a safety luncheon. There were 4 of us. We had to stand at the counter to give the order to the "cashier". I ordered a meatball appetizer and Caesar salad. When the food deliverer brought our meals to us I was shocked at both my items. The meatballs, you get 3, barely had any cheese on it, the meatballs were so tough, you couldn't use a fork to cut them into bites. I had to saw at them with my knife as well. The salad had little dressing, so I had to go to the cashier, for a side of dressing. I was given about an ounce for my salad. Overall, for the price and other issues with the place, don't go for lunch. The food was marginal, at best, and I will not go back to use my money for a low quality meal. read more

Joined friends here for an early dinner (5:30pm). The location downtown is easy to find & there is street parking nearby. The restaurant is nicely laid out. We sat near the window (oddly, our bench seat next to the window rocked back & forth?). My friend tried ordering a drink from the bar but they were out of the ingredients; his fourth choice proved to be the charm. Our first choice of 2 of their sandwiches aren't served after 4pm. ‍ Our waitress eventually mentioned the special that night (chicken Alfredo with broccoli) when she noticed that I was having a hard time, deciding what else to have. My friend ordered their rosemary fries along with her sliders. The waitress later brought out regular french fries and informed us that they were out of rosemary. I had opted for just water with my dinner. Unfortunately, it took two requests for the waitress to refill it. The food was tasty but the combination of running out of ingredients, lackluster service & not offering the full menu after 4pm left me with a mediocre experience. They do offer pizzas, hamburgers & salads thru the dinner hour. read more
