She knows the origins of her fabrics and how to solve wardrobe creation quandaries, such as what to use for lining to control wrinkling and which pattern companies create the best-fitting pants patterns. The address on Yelp at 12 S Broadway is wrong. The correct address is next door to the Garden Inn which is at 225 South Broadway, Rochester, Minnesota, 55904 - which is completely opposite of the Yelp address. The owner has been unable to correct the address on Yelp. In minus four degree weather - that's a very long cold walk. The phone number is correct. The store has a tiny doorway into a fine fabric lovers version of heaven. The fabrics are not cheap so if you want cheap you will have to go to a big box store. If you are seeking designer fabrics and fine silks and wools with an assortment of interesting trims, you will definitely want to visit. The store is narrow and deep with bolts of fabrics going up to the ceiling. The owner Ginny (Virginia) is quite kind and willing to share knowlege or ship fabrics cut to order. Although they did not say, I suspect they are criticized for the cost of the fabrics - so if cost is a factor - save the negative comments and visit for the experience of how fabric stores operated before the big box stores arrived. Ginny's Fine Fabrics is not a quilters store; however, quilters who value fine fabrics might enjoy purchasing some fabrics for specialty quilts. Those of various faiths appear quite comfortable shopping in the store to meet their religious attire restrictions, so be willing to share close quarters with a diversity of other people. Again - think positive. We were in town to visit the Mayo Clinic, so a positive attitude was a requirement for all we did during this trip. I purchased a fabric that inspired me to reach higher in my sewing skills with Virginia's tips on how to work with the fabric. If you are the kind to stash fabric - well yes uh - hoard fabric ~ you will definitely want to purchase fabric from this store and you just might sew it. Ginny's is wonderful; Ginny is wonderful. She gave us a tour of her wonderful store and chatted with us like we were old friends. The variety of fabrics is unmatched. What a wonderful find in Rochester! I will go back when I am in Rochester again. One caveat: the store has moved up the street since #12 is being torn down. Don't let an empty lot turn you away.
