Whenever we are in North Beach, especially with the dogs, we always make a pit stop at Gino & Carlo for a couple drinks. #1 thing to know is to have CASH since it's a cash only establishment. There's an ATM there but there's also a couple major bank ATMs around the corner. We usually come during noon, and finding a space at the bar is never an issue. We keep it simple, a topo Chico hard seltzer and a shot of espolon tequila. The pours are generous and the bartenders are also very welcoming to our pups. We've gotten pizza next door and they don't mind us enjoying it while we sip on our drinks. If you are looking for a no-frills bar to grab a drink without paying crazy high prices, this is a spot to do so. read more

Came here with colleagues who were here for a meeting and we were looking for a Sports Bar with character and close to Original Joe's North Beach where we had a dinner reservation later that evening. Light Bulb clicked since I am a native of the Bay Area and we headed to G&C. Chris was our Bartender and after introductions we had a combination of beers and whiskey. The place reminds me of the Philosiphers Club in West Portal where one can also bring in food from the neighboring places such as Golden Boy next door - so convenient! Make sure you get a receipt. The bar tenders will make up their own tip on your credit card charge. There's nothing special about this place either. I recommend you find somewhere else that's nicer and doesn't steal from you. read more

The bartender was extremely rude, like he wanna fight with me, calling me out for not leaving a tip, despite the fact that I had already circled the tip amount on the receipt. Also, the fact happened within five minutes when I showed up at the bar This behavior was completely unacceptable and the negative energy was palpable, prompting me to return my drinks and leave. Never coming back. When ordering a drink my friend was verbally yelled and cussed out after getting a coaster thrown at him, by Nick, the bartender, out of nowhere. We weren't even talking to him but apparently he had issue with my friend. after my friend politely asked him why he had just harassed him, he continued his yelling and swearing. Won't ever be coming back and will be telling everyone to stay far away from Gino and Carlo. Nick needs to be checked up on because he has serious anger issues and should not be treating customers that way. read more

At least once a year, my cousins, friends and I visit Gino and Carlo for beers and cocktails. We've drive from Sacramento and we visit Tadich Grill for a quick bowl of clam chowder before we make our way to Gino and Carlo. We've been visiting Gino and Carlo for the last 15 years and we have not had one disappointing experience. The prices for drinks are reasonable within the times we live in. The bar tenders are always friendly and quick with short conversations. There's always a good pool game to watch or play a friendly game. On one occasion, we came in on a Thursday and they had free food available for the patrons. The pasta they had was great and the patrons were very friendly. The regulars treat us like long lost cousins. After they find out where we are from, good conversations start up and drinks continue to come. I highly recommend Gino and Carlo as a bar to visit every time you're in North Beach. They are located next to Golden Boy pizza. read more

Stopped into this place to get a drink and play some card games with my friends one a Saturday afternoon! We loved it so much we stayed for hours. How do you own a bar and not know what a Jameson "over" is? The bartender is this kid who apparently also owns the bar and he's too busy hitting on women customers (and pouring them free drinks) to actually bartend. And again, dude has no idea how to make a drink. Place is also dirty and a bunch of cops get drunk here and drive home, if that tells you anything. There are way better bars on the block and in North Beach in general. Won't be coming back to Gino and Carlo's lame lounge. read more

The bartender, perhaps as a personal insult to me (for which I wonder about how I deserved such disparagement) filled a shaker with ice, poured a few drops of booze, and gave me two cups with no more than a thimble-full in each. What happened? For many years, this was the place of excellent drinks. Word on the street was that this was the place for best martinis and mixed drinks. Brought family visiting to grab pizza next door and while waiting the 17 year old white kid walked in and used the restroom at this bar. I then had to go and asked if I should ask, and he said no, they didn't seem to mind, so I headed in and as I walked by the bar the bartender inquired what I was doing. I said using the restroom and he just continued to be extremely snarky...it's for customers only, did you buy anything. I said no, and walked out. As I was exiting, without arguing, he continued on to his customers, loudly saying: if you would have just asked. Now, if your restroom is for customers only that's fine, but you don't need to be a d*ck about it. Also, be consistent...why was I treated in that manner and the young white man not? What exactly makes a bar a great one? Obviously the answer is subjective, which is one reason why I waited so long to write this review. So, let's just remember Ernest Hemingway. And Herb Caen. We all know that Hemingway loved to get his drink on. Did he actually come here? Not sure. But this bar is as vital to North Beach as Hemingway was to literature, cocktails, & tropical locales. First, the hours. G&C is open from 6 to 2, everyday. That's AM. Because greatness should be accessible as close to 24/7 as possible. Second, this is the definition of a neighborhood bar. People that call it a dive bar, complementing it or not, are missing the mark. Come in more than twice, & both you & your drink will be remembered. Before cell phones, it was common & welcome to get phone calls here. And once upon a time, when I lived upstairs, I ran down for coffee cream when I was out...in my bathrobe & wedge slippers. A few times. Thanks Ron, Sherrie, & Silvio. Third, the clientele. Locals? Puh-leez. This is where everyone from North Beachers, fishermen, firemen, cops, service industry, Congressman, & even celebrities rub elbows. Remember Carol Doda? You should. If you're a millennial, google it. This was her joint. We miss you Carol. Finally, the drinks. Short & stiff, something on tap, a mean negroni. Just PLEASE don't order anything along the lines of an appletini for chrisakes. Sure they'll make it, but this is a proud & respectable bar. This bar was (& probably still is) the number one seller of fernet in the country. When in Rome... have a fernet. Now, Herb Caen. The late SF Chronicle columnist himself was well known for loving both North Beach, & a great bar. The Washbag, Moose's, & NB Restaurant were all a regular part of his rotation... along with Gino's. Finally, family. Ownership has always been a partnership & has had its subtractions & additions, but this is still a family run business in every sense. And if you're cool, you'll be treated as such. There's even a monthly luncheon. Antipasto (usually just bread & salami), salad, pasta, entree, bottomless wine. They move the pool tables out & turn it into a bonafide dining room. Check out the upcoming menu on the board above the bar, & buy a ticket. $30. It used to be every 2 weeks, & Rachel & I were there every 2 weeks. Still the best deal in SF. Thank you G&C. I love Gino & Carlo lounge for many reasons but mostly because this place is a great little neighborhood bar that's always full of regulars. Anytime you venture into this place it's packed with local patrons who are die hard north beachers and let's be honest, mostly Italian. The drinks are super reasonable and my standard "dive bar" order is a boilermaker. That usually includes so form of cheap domestic lager and a fernet. The combo here will run ya about 12 bucks. Not bad. It much else to report other than this place is an institution. It's been in the family for generations and I'm happy to support it when in the neighborhood. read more

My boyfriend just stopped in for a drink before going home this evening. As we sat and waited to be served, I overheard the bartender saying to a customer, " If you don't have the money, don't come in here!" I was so shocked that the bartender talked so badly about a customer. Then, we were next to be waited on by this very unhappy bartender, whom I now know was one of the owners. The owners are Ronnie, Frank, and Marco. I believe the rude one who we encountered was Ronnie. He took our drink order like he was doing a big favor to us. There are so many bars and restaurants in this area, and for him to have an attitude like that was unbelievable! When he got us our drinks, he said cash only. I stated that shouldn't you not have a sign that states that. He said in a very mean and sarcastic voice, "Okay, I will just put one up just for you!" He told us where to locate the ATM and just continued to ignore us and talk badly about other customers. I love SF and have lived here for many years, and to go into a little bar and be so disrespected by a bunch of young punks is completely despicable to me. This place is a hidden gem found right outside the heart of San Francisco. An Italian style bar right next to a really good pizza joint. The bartender Paul is so cool. His drinks are world famous. This is one of the oldest bar in North Beach. Built in 1942, this bar is a favorite hangout for the old-school and newer generation Italians. The bar has 15 beers on tap with family-members bartending & serving, cool music, a pair of billiard tables and entertaining locals with a ton of priceless and nostalgic stories of North Beach of the yester-years. Where North Beach once was the epicenter for the Italians. I love to hear stories of old North Beach. But unfortunately, North Beach is beginning to be an area for the younger generation who could care less about the past and care about getting drunk immediately. With the bar's pair of of billiard tables, every Mondays and Wednesdays the bar has a pool tournament. One of my co-worker's best friend, who is also a regular Gino and Carlos patron, is one of 64 players involve in the tournament. I was there earlier tonight and she was one of eight remaining hustlers. Yes, she is that good. The entrance fee is $25.00 and the grand prize is a pair of airplane tickets to Las Vegas with hotel and car rental included. That's is not bad for $25.00 for the entrance fee, but you have to be a really good pool-shark. While she was playing, at the bar I ordered a Sea Breeze. For $4.00 the cocktail comprised with parts cranberry juice, grapefruit juice and vodka. Frank, one of the family members and bartender, used Ketel-one Vodka for my cocktail and he didn't skimp on the higher-end vodka either. One sip of the potent cocktail has changed my mood completely. I was sipping on my cocktail and sadly saw my co-worker's friend lost and being eliminated from the tournament. Maybe I jinxed her. I hope not. " Hey, I'm just being my Joe Cool-self and chatting to and listening with the regulars!" Other the priceless stories of the neighborhood, I was told that the bar has great lunch specials on Thursdays. With a slice of Prime-rib or Petrale sole with sides of salad and pasta and a glass of wine for $20.00. If I comeback during the midday, I might try that one day. I hear stories about famous personalities dominating North Beach. I hope one day that the newer generation will hear stories from Joe Cool. read more
