We've been coming to Buena Vista Cafe for over 20 years whenever we visit San Francisco, and it's still a place we make time for. This trip was especially meaningful because we brought our kids and got to share somewhere that used to be part of our own date nights. Daytime was great. We were seated quickly, service was efficient, and the atmosphere had that classic, lively SF energy. The kids enjoyed their hot chocolate, and it was fun introducing them to such an iconic spot. That said, the nighttime experience felt very different. Service was inconsistent, and when I ordered a simple classic cocktail (a Bees Knees), the bartender refused to make it, saying he didn't have mint--even though the drink doesn't require mint. The interaction came off as dismissive, and he also made a comment along the lines of it "not being a cocktail lounge," which felt unnecessarily rude given the simplicity of the request. The kids' hot chocolate also came out extremely hot, and my daughter ended up burning her tongue, which was frustrating since it was clearly ordered for children. The Irish coffee is still the signature here, though the quality doesn't feel quite as strong as it used to over the years. Even with those issues, it's still a San Francisco institution. It was genuinely special to bring our kids to a place that holds so many memories for us, and that part of the experience really mattered. It's still worth a visit for the history and nostalgia, even if it doesn't quite feel like it did years ago.
To go to the Buena Vista is to experience a little slice of San Francisco, no doubt. I absolutely love this spot. On a recent visit, my friends and I actually grabbed a table inside and sat down to truly enjoy our Irish coffees. We also ordered a basket of garlic fries and sat and yapped for a while. The service is always on point, and it's fun to people watch and see tourists, locals, and those that have never experienced the magic of the Irish coffee making watch in wonder and excitement. The Irish coffee is just a must, and they also offer decaf fyi! The menu looks pretty good too for brunch/lunch, and they even have dinner, dessert, and drinks to-go (who knew!) Located in an iconic spot of Fishermen's Wharf, great to walk the area pre/post visit or hop on a cable car to take you throughout another part of the City. Ride-share strongly suggested for this location as it's very congested and busy.
Came here with a friend after walking around to try the Irish coffee. There was room at the bar so we sat there. The bartender was friendly. He asked if I liked whiskey, told him so-so. He recommended the Nutty Irishman since it had frangelico and baileys. It was nice and warm like a hug. It wasnt too sweet, easy to drink. My friend tried some of mine after her chocolate coffee and she liked it. After that,but wanted to try the Irish coffee since it's what they are known for. It was different from the Nutty one. The whiskey that was used seemed balanced, different profile from Jameson. After that, I also tried the Mexican coffee. After going through half of it, it kinda grew on me. Felt like maybe the kahlua help cut through the tequila. The bartender asked which I liked the best. I told him it's between the Nutty Irishman and the Mexican.
You might notice that this is the only restaurant in this touristy area that is crowded. That's because it's an institution. Their Irish coffee is really good. I even had the decaf one since I needed to wind down for the evening, so I bet the regular tastes better. Had it with a clam chowder. Then had some French toast because I was craving it. The staff were friendly and attentive despite the place being completely packed. It's a great vibe too, I love the energy despite it being a chilly day when I went here. Lots of history on the walls to look at. I came here solo on business so it was easy to get a spot at the bar.
Buena Vista ended up being our go-to restaurant while staying in SF. Absolutely love the guys working the bar. We ate in a back room but the short time we spent in the bar area was pure entertainment. Great guys and I hear they've been there forever. The real reason we kept going back was the food and cocktails though. I highly recommend the Irish Coffee for which they are famous for. Breakfast was solid and a good value for the money. We truly enjoyed chatting with our waiter who was open to making suggestion for places to visit that only the locals would know about.
A San Francisco institution [San Francisco CA] Came here with a group of friends for the experience and, of course, to try their "original Irish coffee." I was told that coffee lovers should not miss visiting this coffeehouse while visiting San Francisco but they also serve food here including soups, salads, apps, sandwiches and entrées so open invite for all guests even if you don't drink coffee. Immediately as we walked through the open doors the aroma of coffee can't be denied. The atmosphere was lively and bustling. It was very busy but we were finally able to find a round table that fit all of us LoL! The building it sits in is also historic. My friends tried different flavors and I'm not sure which one I had a taste but it was very good. I believe it was the Chocolate Coffee. But the Skrewball Coffee seemed to be a popular one within our group. Great customer service! You might have to do some walking or have a keen eye in finding parking. Even at 9:30 on a Saturday night, this place was packed. We got lucky and grabbed a table right as someone was leaving. The staff was quick to clear and clean it right away and wave us over. It was perfect timing for our group of five. We'd just finished dinner nearby and came specifically for the legendary Irish Coffee. This was my first time here but my friends have been raving about it. The employees were great. As soon as we sat down, they brought menus and waters for the table. We ordered 5 Irish coffees and they showed up at our table within minutes. That cold, heavy cream on top is perfect, and while you can definitely taste the whiskey, it's not overpowering. We couldn't stop at just one. It's loud and crowded here but the staff were so efficient, they were clearing empty glasses the second you're done. Parking around Ghirardelli is a nightmare as usual, so just head straight for the square's garage or take an Uber over. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the area!
No trip for me on St Patrick's weekend, is complete without a trip to The Buena Vista! Headed here for breakfast and of course had to begin with their Irish coffees which are always spectacular! Enjoyed their Crab omelette which was loaded with fresh crab and served alongside potatoes and sourdough! Always love the crowd, the location, the history, service and food here and it will always have fond memories of this restaurant
This establishment is famous for its Irish coffee and was recommended. It was always full when we passed by but they seat you right away. The ambiance is great at the bar. The food is just ok. Nothing unique or special. We went for breakfast so it was the eggs and potatoes combo that's on every breakfast menu. I think it's a bit overrated when it comes to breakfast but the Irish coffee was great!
If somewhere claims to have an original of something, I want to try it. The Buena Vista claims to be the place that created America's first Irish Coffee. Of course it's probably not true, but they likely did popularize it and inspired other bars and restaurants to serve it. I'm not a huge Irish Coffee fan, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but the coffee tasted like it was brewed way too hot and possibly burnt. I still drank it and enjoyed it though. It definitely warmed me up after being outside on a cold night. A great spot to end our night!
I love St. Patty's Day. So when it comes, I need to have corned beef and cabbage. Yesterday, I found this spot via Google search for the corned beef and cabbage in the Bay Area. Visited their IG page and saw that they are also known for their Irish Coffee not just by how it tastes, but how it is made. I was very intrigued at this point to visit. This place gets very packed and stays busy. It is a very touristy spot. It took awhile for my wife and I to locate parking because it is a busy area and it was a Saturday (It is near the Wharf...Piers). However, we lucked up and found one without needing to pay a meter....YAYYYY. When we arrived there was a small line. We waited about 7 to 10 mins for a table. The host also offered standing by the bar, if we were just getting drinks or take out. We wanted to sit though yo her the full experience. Our waitress name was Antoinette (I did not ask her for spelling..ask for her when you go). She was bubbly and welcoming (I have her in one of my videos standing directly behind me... she's the one with short hair). I immediately told my wife to get the Irish Coffee and to go video it being made...lol ( They are in the Guinness Book of Records for their Irish Coffee). She was not excited because she didn't truly understand why I was telling her this. However, once she went and completed the task.. she was throughly pleased and excited lol. I dint drink coffee, so I had a Irish Car Bomb. We agreed that both drinks were simply delicious. We both ordered the Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner. When it arrived, the portion size was pleasing. I took off a star because since of the food was cold and lukewarm smh. Antoinette immediately took the plates back. Unfortunately, when she brought them back, the portions had slightly decreased. I did say something about that, but nothing was done at that point. Also, my wife and I just decided to enjoy what we had because it still was enough and we were hungry. We both ordered the whiskey that the advertise on their wall, ginger ale and cherries (They have a full bar). This was delicious. I had dessert, which was the chocolate lava cake. Honestly, I don't normally do dessert not do I eat all of it. However, this cake was so good. It was light, fluffy, and moist. It had just enough "Lava" in the middle that it did not overpower. Unfortunately, the restroom had a "Out of order" stall, so only 1 was being used. This made a line each time. That needs to be fixed because this restaurant is large and that is an inconvenience to patrons. The overall esthetics is beautiful. It gives a very nostalgic feeling and it was nice to see and read all about their history.
Always a favorite place to visit when in San Francisco. Located on the Embarcadero at the base of Hyde Street, this is a venerable institution. They serve food all day, but come for the famous Irish Coffee! I enjoyed a delicious breakfast with my Irish Coffee on this pleasant morning. Come early on the weekends, as there can be a line of customers waiting to get in! The beautiful Bay view, the fabulous old back bar and the photos of San Francisco make it feel like you've stepped into history. Wait staff is friendly and efficient.

Okay, this is my selfish selfie post because there are already plenty of Irish Coffee photos in here. I was born in this beautiful city of San Francisco. It's great to come back as a tourist to enjoy what the area has to offer. On this day trip we took the Vallejo Ferry straight into Embarcadero. We love the hassle free trip and really enjoy the ride. Once in the city we simply walk throughout Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf and into North Beach. The Buena Vista is an iconic spot dating back to the mid 1800's. It's great to pop in, have an Irish coffee, and enjoy the vibe. We got seated immediately at the bar. Service was great and everyone was enjoying futbol. San Francisco looks amazing! Shared a few photos to enjoy. Hope you get a chance to try. Highly recommended. read more

Such a pretty day, had to stop in. The Buena Vista Cafe Bartender - Marty, was great and made us yummy Irish Coffee. The deco has old fashion look with great photos the share the history of this place. You must drop and and have one. read more

Partner & I are Bay Area locals who'd never stopped in but finally got to visit. * Location is compact & staff is good about keeping diners vs. bar-only patrons separate to keep quick turnover. * Bar Experience: Seats are tight & room is limited so be prepared to get cozy and be within a few inches of your neighbors' shoulder/legs/bags. * Bartender was quick to take our order (2 beers - 1 pilsner, 1 Guinness). I got my Pilsner quickly, but the bartender fully forgot my partner's order for +10min and dropped it off without apology or comment. Ladies next to us chatted up the same bartender who explained most people order Irish coffee and side eyed for ordering beer. The vibe didn't improve, we finished our drinks quickly and left. * Ambiance: Cute & old fashioned, but didn't feel especially extraordinary. Overall: $27 for 2 beers with poor service didn't live up to the hype for us. Wouldn't recommend. read more
Born and raised in SF but had never been to Buena Vista for their famous Irish coffee until recently. On a recent trip to explore SF, we stopped by to try the famous drink. We were all super full from dinner in Chinatown and ice-cream sundaes at Ghirardelli but when in the neighborhood, how can we skip? Nine of us crammed into BV and the host immediately seated us at a corner table. The place was bustling and lively on a Saturday night. Most of us just ordered drinks but my husband decided to get some garlic fries and fried calamari for the table to share. A couple of the kids in our group ordered clam chowder. The fries and calamari were okay, nothing special to write home about. We also weren't expecting the garlic fries to be oozing with melted cheese. The kids enjoyed the clam chowder that came with oyster crackers. Our server was so observant and attentive that he noticed my son lining his crackers around the bowl of chowder but didn't have enough so immediately grabbed more packs of crackers for him. As for the Irish coffee, it was good, but not worth the $16 price for coffee with whiskey. I would probably not come back for the Irish coffee; however, I would totally come back for the vibe, friendly service and to try other items on the menu. read more

Low key and chill and yes, Irish whiskey. Was there just to try the Irish whiskey so cannot tell much about anything else. Yes it's pricey but again it's in a touristy part of SF. Take the cable car and get down at the Hyde st terminal station and walk over. It didn't feel touristy and maybe it is because of the time of day. read more

Known for their Irish coffees. Kind of a tourist trap, due to location right next to Ghirardelli square. But also a SF staple! Space- old school bar. Eat at tables only drink at bars. Lots of staff. Gets busy. Menu- we got the crab omelette and salmon sandwich. Both tasty. Love that you can substitute boudin sourdough. Drinks- full bar offerings. Ppl have no shame drinking at 9am. A classic spot for Irish coffee loved by tourists and locals alike. I usually go with friends in the morning and grab a drink at the bar. Even if the restaurant is full, if you're getting drinks only you can usually find a spot quickly. I did go once for food, although I don't remember what I had, but the Irish coffee is unforgettable. The vibes inside feel historic and cozy, a great spot worth visiting read more
Got Irish Coffee? Why yes I do! This iconic bar that is known for creating the modern Irish coffee is such a SF vacation destination that even in the middle of the afternoon, there is a line out the door and crowds inside. However, the old world vibes transports you back to a classic period time when the Barbary Coast reigned over the grand wooden bar and the view over the bay is refreshing. Buena Vista has food as well - such as the reuben sandwich or their famous bread pudding. But try the Irish coffee...because the scent of vanilla cream and coffee entices you in and makes it irresistible. The chocolate (chocolate liquor) or the peanut butter (with Skrewball) are also fun to try. But everyone should come at least once here so you can soak up the atmosphere and history and enjoy a favorite cocktail to boot! read more

The Buena Vista is an experience.....- This cafe is a historic San Francisco landmark that is famous due to making Irish coffee popular in the US by introducing it in 1952 based on a recipe from Ireland's Shannon airport. This cafe can be found near Fisherman's Wharf....just across from the famous all year long beach and the popular place to pick up he cable car nearby. From the cafe windows you will get the opportunity take in some of San Francisco best views- the ocean and the trolley! This cafe offers a full menu beyond its staple bar menu-I came to try the famous Irish Coffee. I plopped myself on the wood bar among a host of others to take in a show and some coffee...and boy was I treated to a show by John and company...the staff really know how to entertain the crowd....the staff members behind the bar have all been with the cafe for a long time-- one bartender has been at the cafe for over 30 years....Thanks John for being a trooper and letting me video you making the infamous coffee that really warmed my tummy! I had such a great experience- talking with the bartenders and guest- that I ended up staying for two! An Irish Coffee will set you back $16 dollars for the basic one. Pro tip.....you even get one to go....to enjoy at the beach or on the trolley! Cheers! read more
We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it was very busy but we were seated immediately. It's a loud lively atmosphere. We were there to try their famous Irish Coffee, and it was served piping hot. I must admit it was delicious and I'll definitely take friends and family their for the experience. read more

Unique and historic bar/breakfast spot in the Fisherman's wharf area! I visited this spot on a Sunday morning and there was a long line, but my friend and I were able to get seated quickly since we were just ordering drinks. Walking-in, I loved the old-fashioned decor and vibe of the place that withstood time. My friend and I ordered their famous Irish Coffee and it was great and strong! The did not skimp out on the alcohol haha. The drink was sweet and the alcohol meshed well with the coffee. The cream top was tasty and creamy. I also enjoyed watching the bartender make the drinks! Great experience here and would recommend. Would like to come back and try the food one day. read more

Buena Vista is one of those San Francisco institutions that is absolutely timeless. It's been 10+ years since I've been back and their Irish coffee is still as good as ever. Great for a small group of friends but there's limited space and even if it's busy, just wait and spots will open up. If you go, try the nutty. It's my favorite. Also if it's nice out, they offer Irish coffees to go! Just go to the middle of the bar. read more
It was packed during the holiday season, so we did wait outside in a line that went around the corner (took 20 min). When we made it inside we were seated at a table already occupied with a party so we just said hello and joined them. I ordered the clam chowder in a bread bowl and it was yummy and a decent portion for the price ($15.25)! I was surprised. My friend ordered the Penne Pasta and we both thought it severely lacked flavor. She had to add a bunch of salt and pepper to eat it. But as for atmosphere, we loved the vibes here! Expect a wait during the morning hours, but it's well worth it. Hearty goodness all-around, with warm, friendly service from start to finish in this quaint diner/bar. Come for the show, but stay for the Irish Coffees (or two.) They're a must and go well with breakfast, for sure. My Avocado Toast was tasty, but be sure to eat it before toast loses its toastiness. Always crowded, an iconic place near the wharf. Place has a bar with the classic look and feel. Service was great, quick and friendly. We tried a burger and lobster roll, lobster roll was mediocre, burger was good. Irish coffee is excellent, must order. We sat by a window looking out to the cable car station with the lawn connecting to the wharf. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for years and we finally made it happen! I love the historical feel when you step in, along with all the historical pictures and decor. Of course we came for the famous Irish coffee. I'm not a fan of whiskey and I'm still not lol! But, the Irish coffee was good and even my coffee hating husband liked it. There's a nice view out the window and then the bartender making the Irish coffee is also fun to see. read more

Coming here since 1980 on my first trip to San Francisco primarily motivated by the movie Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucile Ball and Henry Fonda's hilarious scene in this restaurant. I wanted that irish coffee! I got it and I come almost every year since from S. CA. I came again tonight. It's the same, doesn't disappoint and had to happily line up outside the door because it is saturday night and christmas decorations are out! My husband and I quickly get to the bar to be seated for a traditional irish coffee. There's Joseph still there after 49 years making my Irish coffee. It is wonderful it's hot it's delicious with cool cream on the top. Yep it's expensive. Always has been. Now it's 16 bucks for a little glass, but you're also sipping history. The Buena Vista may be famous for its Irish coffee, but it's great for so many other reasons. I love the old-school feel, especially when you grab a seat at the counter in the back. The service is consistently awesome -- the servers and staff genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs, and that good energy shows every time I visit. On this trip, we had an Irish coffee, an IPA on draft, a patty melt, and a grilled cheese with tomato. Everything was delicious and hit the spot. The only downside was the bathroom. It was honestly pretty gross -- the floor was soaked and there was a lot of trash, which made me uncomfortable. I'll spare the photos, but it definitely needs more frequent attention. Walking into the Buena Vista you get transported to another level of dining. This was our second time, and each visit you feel more and more at home. The place is cozy. Find the best seat in the house, and sit back and enjoy some fine service. They let you take your time here and enjoy the history that made it what it was. Sit there and wonder how many Irish Coffees had they made when you see one on every table. The food was delicious and as big or small as you want. The clam chowder fit exactly my craving. The eggs and sourdough toast with home style potatoes was like walking into the friendliest kitchen and bar you've been to in a while. read more

Is the Buena Vista wheelchair accessible?
They can provide a slight ramp into the restaurant. But the restrooms have stairs for both the men and women. Impossible to get to in a wheelchair.
Does their clam chowder contain bacon?
I am not aware they have clam chowder? I've been doing tastings for years never seen that. If this is for a special event, you'll have to call the winery for what their ingredients.
Is pet friendly?
They have a heated outdoor enclosure and your pets are welcome.
Does your establishment have dedicated menus for people who are celiac or have food allergies?
They definitely do not have menu like that. This is a old school menu and my vegan daughter can't be accommodated either.
Are they open thanksgiving day?
Do they have a vegan option for Irish Coffee?
No, they cannot provide a vegan substitute heavy cream.
I know my chances are slim but do they happen to have an option for Irish coffee to-go?
Yes they do!! Just don't open the Tullamore bottles inside - you have to add them yourself outside the shop (learned my lesson the hard way lol)

You have to park along the street. Sometimes it can be a challenge to find a spot.

We got there at 11:00 and lunch was being served. Breakfast is served all day.

Food is great! We had breakfast there and it was good. Omelettes were great! I ordered the Denver unlettered and it was very tasty 😋!
