I've got wavy/curly hair and tried for years to find stylists who can bring out the curl and cut my hair in the shape I want. I've tried so many places in the State College area, and have had some good and many disappointing cuts. But Amy always gives me an excellent cut and my curls are renewed. I just came from Gio's hair salon this morning and got a cut and color. The cut was awesome, but the color was a little too light for my liking. Inside the salon it looked fine, but when I stepped out into the daylight I realized it was a little lighter than I would have liked. As soon as I got home and made sure I really wasn't comfortable with the color I called and asked if they could darken it up maybe add some low lights or a toner. They refused to fix my hair for free even tho I had JUST left and was not happy with the outcome. They wanted to charge me a completely new fee for the toner and low lights. I have NEVER heard of a salon that would not fix a customer's hair for free and as soon as possible. I paid $115 and as a college student I expect to get my moneys worth. Although they usually do a great job, I would not recommend this salon to someone that may be particular about their cut and color because they won't fix it unless you want to pay a completely new fee. Pretty ridiculous in my opinion. read more

I come here every time I have to get a haircut. I've tried more than five haircut places in State College and one of the staff here was the only one who gave me a satisfying haircut. The staff is very friendly and it'll take no longer than 30 minutes for them to finish. Unfortunately the man that I always go to is away but I'm sure the other stylists there are just as good. read more

I had really long hair but needed a cut for an important visit weekend for a PhD program. Didn't want anything complicated, just a decent haircut that would make me look professional. My friend recommended Gio's, and I thought I'd give it a shot. Was able to get an appointment promptly, and when I showed up the stylist actually spent 5-10 minutes talking to me about what I wanted. After settling on a general style, I let her go to work. After the cut has done I was pleasantly surprised by the result. I'm from New York City and have seen several barbers and asked for a similar style, yet the stylist at Gio's was the only one who ever actually cut my hair how I wanted it. A week or so later, I'm still thrilled with the haircut, and obviously it wasn't the only factor, but I got into the PhD program. Great place for a haircut if you're a dude willing to pay a bit more for a stylist that will listen to you and give you a nice cut. And when I say a bit more I mean standard haircut prices (about 30 bucks including tip), still cheaper than NYC!! read more

Worst haircut I have received in a very long time. After a recommendation from a local, I called the salon ahead of time to find out if they knew about cutting naturally curly hair. I was assured that yes, they were all exceedingly educated in the art of curly hair cutting. I was even told that everyone except one person that worked there had curly hair. I scheduled an appointment with Liza. I should have turned around and walked out when I saw that no one in the salon wore their hair naturally curly. I grow my hair to my waist and cut it to shoulder length every 4 or 5 years to donate it to Wigs for Kids. I told Liza about this, and that I was a year into new growth for my next donation, and that I am planning on getting married in the next few months, and wanted nothing drastic to be done. informed her that I just needed a trim, and for the layers around my face to be softened up a bit. I specifically asked that she not add more layers, that she not thin it out, and that she just shape it up a bit. I let her know that I do not put any product in my hair, do not blow dry it, do not flat-iron it, do not use a curling iron on it. I let it dry naturally. I was exceedingly specific as to my needs with my hair. I am blind as a bat without my glasses. Of course, I have to take them off in order to get my hair cut. Liza did everything I asked her NOT to do. When I questioned her, she said, "Oh, this isn't really thinning out your hair, it's called a brick cut. it's just lightening up the heaviness on top a bit. We used to do it all the time in the 80's with all of those layered perms." I asked her to stop layering the top and adding more bangs, and she told me she was just softening it up. It went on like this for the entire time I was in the chair. She asked if she could blow it straight for me. I said sure. At this point, I know that when a stylist asks to do that, quite often, it is because they have cut my hair for a straight hair style, not a curly one. Once I put my glasses back on, I was sure I had seen this haircut before - back in 1995. I had that "Jennifer Aniston Shag... Then, after letting it curl back up after I washed it, I realized that it was actually the haircut I had with a bad perm in 1985 during the Madonna rage. Don't go there if you have curly hair. They claim to be curly hair experts. They may be - but only if you straighten your hair every day. I now have to re-think my veil, hairstyle, and hairpiece for my wedding. I am still a bit upset about it, and will never set foot in there again. read more

I've been going to Gios for nine years and love their salon. Ed has been cutting and coloring my hair and I highly recommend him. He's personable and extremely attentive. He takes his time to discuss options and to he works to enhance your hair and highlight your features. Everyone on the staff is friendly and helpful. Both my teen sons now see Ed too and he's great with them as well. read more

Rip off salon . Do not be surprised if your hair comes out glowing in the dark as did my daughter's hair. Most expensive unreasonable unprofessional salon I have ever dealt with. Owner has not returned my calls, who needs customer service when a new set of victims arrives with each semester. read more

I was a bit skeptical about trying a new hair salon at first, as I usually stick to what I know, but Gio's was great. A haircut for $35 opposed to the $50 I pay at home in NJ, which is way more reasonable to a student. No frills or fancy lotions. They don't bog your hair down with anything, or try to sell you their products. I loved how my hair looked afterwards. Give them a try - plus everyone is So nice and easy to talk to! read more

I had REALLY long hair (almost down to my butt) and decided to go for a short haircut recently. After reading reviews of salons downtown and comparing prices, I decided to go with Gio's. I was able to set up a same-day appointment and even though the salon was closing at 4, a stylist took me at 3:30. The stylist, Casie, was extremely attentive and really went the extra mile to make sure she grasped exactly what kind of cut I wanted. She was friendly and gentle and my hair turned out EXACTLY how I envisioned it. 10 inches off and I could not be happier! The salon itself was stylish and comfortable. My family and I try to get up here every year around my birthday. I colored my hair for a while at home and even tried to trim it up at times. When we got up to State College, I wanted to treat myself to a "real" cut and color. After I read some reviews, I thought I would take a chance and go somewhere where the reviews were pretty good. After researching, I called Gio's Hair Design 2 and asked for "Tara". I was so happy when I called that day, they had room to see me. It was a very nice hair salon and easy to find on the corner. Tara was very friendly and you feel very comfortable while being there. When I sat down I told her my hair history and told her what style I was comfortable with and what color I liked. She then told me what she would like to do and even showed me the color that she wanted to use. It was so nice that Tara was able to get rid of ALL of my "old" coloring and also make my hair feel so soft again and shiny. I love my new cut and color and when my family walked in to get me, they all loved it as well. I was thrilled when I left and felt like a new person. I live 2 1/2 hours away in Hamburg PA, but I will be back in 2 months to touch it up and continue to see Tara. If you go here, you will not be disappointed. It is a "down to earth" hair salon and they make you feel like you are part of their "hair family" while being there. I am not a youngster either, I am over the age of 45 but younger than 55. The girls there, although I do not know their ages, all look like they have plenty of years of experience and I felt like I was in "good hands" .
