On a trip to my roots in New York City on Dec. 30 2014, I met a longtime friend for lunch in the shadows of the NY City skyline and on the NJ side of the Hudson River, to avoid all of the holiday crowds and traffic. We wanted Italian food (hard to get real Italian food in the Washington, D.C. area that I live in, so I take it in when I can in NY). Looking at the various choices on Yelp, we agreed on this place, as neither of us had been to it before and the reviews seemed good. Upon entering at 11 a.m., we were taken back by the small and cramped space (although typical in much of the NY City area), which had just three tables (metal outdoor ornate furniture that belongs in a backyard during a barbeque, not in a restaurant setting). Regardless which of the three tables we selected, all were within inches or a few feet of the entrance/exit door and the blasts of cold air from the winter season as people came in an out. And, true to the reviews, the volume of people coming in and out to get their takeout food was high, thus we froze our tails off. The counter staff (a female and two males, all in their late 20s or early 30s) were nice enough and as we sat, gave us a taste of the mozzarella which people rave about in the reviews. The Italian Wedding soup was good, the mozzarella was equally good, if not better. When I ordered the soup, I told the female I wanted the special of the day - Sausage, peppers and onions - but wanted to wait until after I finished the soup for it, since I didn't want it to sit at the table and get cold as I slowly had the soup. Not having seen my friend in person for a couple of years, we had a lot to catch up on and chat about as we both had our soup. When I went to get the special of the day, a male staff member told me it was all gone and other customers bought the contents of the single tray that they make of the daily special. I was miffed and expressed that and the fact that I had ordered it when I did the soup, as the female staff member listened to the entire conversation and said nothing, I assume because she knew she was wrong. The male gave me a smart-guy answer that they sell out when they sell out and don't make more since the cook gets off work at 2 p.m. (it was now about Noon). I ordered the stuffed pepper instead. It was a lot of meat (meatloaf like) and no taste, buried in sauce and melted cheese. Overall, this place gets an "okay," not good rating. read more

Wow! This place was recommended by a colleague who lives in Secaucus and I am so happy I took his recommendation. I've gone twice and ordered the chicken cutlet sandwich and the mortadella sandwich. Both were to die for! The portions are giant (I ended up splitting both sandwiches with a friend of mine) and all of the ingredients were fresh. They also are able to customize any sandwich, so the possibilities are endless. I will definitely be returning to check out the other menu items and suggest you do to! read more

I have been to Secaucus NJ many times..and there is NOT much of a food scene up here. But this deli rocks...look at the reviews they don't lie folks.. Oh my!! A must if you are in this area!!! Such a cool family run deli!! The subs were so huge, we ate half for lunch and had the other half for dinner! We asked the older woman behind the counter to make a sun that she would eat and exactly how she would eat it! She made us an Italian sub with balsamic vinegar and huge slabs of fresh mozzarella!! I'm born and raised in Secaucus and I first came across Gio's back when I was in Middle School. And to this day I can't visit my family in NJ without swinging by. This place was also the first place I experienced eating fresh mozz with dark balsamic vinegar and sliced tomato. What I'm trying to say is... I have a lot of history with Gio's. When I visit I always get the same sandwich; bologna, dark balsamic vinegar, sliced tomatoes, fresh mozz, and a little olive oil. And over 10 years later the mozz is just as fresh as ever and the service is just as friendly. Though the prices has gone up since I was a kid, the portion sizes are still VERY generous. I've yet to really try anything else on their menu but honestly all I ever want is their cold sandwiches. Always fresh and always delicious! read more

Was en route from CT to MD and hated the idea of having to eat at one of the Jersey Turnpike rest stops. We found this place with the help of the Yelp app and I am SO GLAD! The place is small and sort of out of the way, but the sandwiches were SO GOOD. The boyfriend had a chicken parm and I had one with salami and their homemade mozzarella. I decided to throw a luncheon party for a few friends and wasn't up to cooking. Scrolling through for a good hoagie shops in the Secaucus area I came upon this eatery. I notice it got good ratings on yelp. I ordered for sandwiches: the Italian sub, a ham and mozzarella sub, a mozzarella and roasted red pepper sandwich and a turkey and mozzarella sandwich all with the works. We also ordered cherry hot peppers on the side. The order was easy over the phone with a very nice gentleman. I paid with my credit card over the phone. The delivery took 38 minutes. I was shocked. Very nice delivery guy. I tip them well because I appreciated them getting to me so quickly. And then my guests and I enjoyed the sandwiches. The Italian bread was amazing. The mozzarella was fresh. All the vegetables were fresh. They were lightly seasoned and lightly oiled and dressed. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the experience. It was a five star experience all the way. read more

Fantastic My coworker and I are in town for work from the west coast and we were looking for a lunch spot. This little gem popped up in our yelp search and we decided to give it a try. The two guys working behind the counter were both very friendly and greeted us immediately as we walked in. You could tell they both were happy to be there and offer a great product.
