Small place, maybe 5 tables. Super efficient pair working the counter and making the sandwiches. Bread and bagels fresh. Get in line, know what you want and order away, there might be an additional question or two if you aren't a regular. Straightforward, neighborhood outpost for outstanding bagels, sandwiches & coffee. Loved it. I am a simple breakfast person. I want a perfect bagel and a solid cup of coffee. Sometimes with a shmear, other times an egg and cheese. When hungry, I will add some lox to the shmear. Sounds easy? 98% of places fail miserably in at least one but almost always both! So, as an entertainer who travels extensively, I am always in search of the 2%. And I was thrilled to find one in Secaucus NJ! The excellence of this type of meal must start with the centerpiece. The bagel. What makes the perfect bagel? The ideal bakery-fresh bagel will have a crispy or occasionally dark, blistered, and crackly crust and a chewy, not bready, texture. The unique shape, taste, and texture of a well-made bagel differs greatly from any other bread product. This is in sharp contrast to the big coffee chains that serve bread in a round shape with a hole in the middle and misrepresent them by calling them bagels. The bagel should be a good size, not too big or too small, roughly fitting 2/3 of a dinner plate. And, a high gluten flour and excellent hydration must be used for taste. Which brings me to an aside. There is no such thing as a gluten free bagel. I have sampled some great gluten free bagel substitutes and found them to be an excellent treat but they are simply no closer to a bagel than a motorcycle is to a car. Both may be great but they are not the same!!!! Anyways, the bagels here fit the bill perfectly. Contrary to one review on here, you can see they are perfectly sized. Another reviewer noted the outside could be darker and more crackly. While I do not disagree, the great taste negated this being an issue. I loved it. The rest of the experience was exceptional as well. The egg, properly fried freshly, not scrambled or premade, was delicious. Perfect amount of cheese. The coffee was fresh brewed and had a great taste and aroma. None of the fancy stuff for me. Great service, great food, and even the passionate, loud discussion in Spanish among some patrons and the staff made for a great breakfast dine in experience. read more

When in Jersey one must eat bagels! So I found a bagel shop within walking distance of my hotel and set out on my mission to not just have a bagel for breakfast but to have THE most Jersey breakfast bagel possible ... Taylor Ham Egg & Cheese on a Toasted Everything Bagel!!! Now I'm from Jersey so I know bagels and the bagel shop experience ... and this little gem although small is mighty. Their customer service is top tier as they were friendly from the door and went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with my brekky sammy. The bagel itself was soft but had that chew and crispness you want in a bagel and the egg was fried perfectly. The Taylor ham was sliced extremity thin which isn't typical in my Jersey life experience lol but it was still tasty nonetheless. Walked downstairs from the connected hotel to grab a bagel breakfast sandwich. The 2 guys working were friendly and quick. I had a sausage, egg, and cheese everything bagel with a juice and Gatorade. It was made in front of me and I was walking out within 5min back to my room. It was still hot and fresh by the time I got to my room and my drinks were ice cold. I have been going here for years and never had any complaints until now. I recently discovered that there is a new owner and all I can say is he is NO Jimmy! The new owner is rude and has an attitude problem. This all started a few weeks ago when he went to hand me my change and I tapped on the tip jar. He called me rude for trying to leave a tip! Then the other day I got into an argument with him after he basically threw the bag with my buttered roll in it at me. We exchanged words and he basically said if I don't like it, don't come here any more. This is how you treat customers and run a business? This new owner needs to learn what customer service is and start respecting the people who patronize his store. Needless to say, I will NOT be supporting his business any more. It's a shame because I really did enjoy the bagels & rolls. read more

Stopped by this shop with my family before catching our flight back to California last week and all I have to say is, out of all the bagel spots we visited on the east coast - THIS PLACE WAS THE BEST! We all ordered bagels and they were amazing! We also tried the carrot cake and coffee cake. Not to mention that the coffee was fresh and flavorful. I tried 3 different coffee shops while in New York and was very disappointed. I was happy to find some decent coffee before heading back home. Not only was the food and drinks great but the customer service we received was as well! Jim and Tito were very welcoming. It's rare to across a spot with both great food and customer service. Average bagel at best. The most important thing in a bagel is how it's cooked (should be crispy on the outside and soft/airy on the inside) and this place somewhat hits the mark on this. Has the crispy part down but not so much the airy, soft, chewy feel. The size of the bagels are also very small. Won't come back. read more

Sorry, but the prices are just out of control. Also being charged $1 more by accident and then not apologizing is unacceptable. If inflation, covid, and rent are hurting the business then you need more customers and need to move someplace where you can be profitable at normal prices. I'm wondering if it was because it was a holiday week, and people were out of town, so maybe they had more bagels left over? But typically when I've ordered TooGood2Go from other bagel spots, they give me multiples of the ones people no one wants, like blueberry or egg. But at Knead A Bagel, there were so many different varieties - a bialy, everything, strawberry, rainbow, sesame, cinnamon raisin, pumpernickel, just to name a few. The bagels still tasted fresh too. Would visit again, even if it's not through TooGood2Go. I think they also have breakfast sammies, so I wouldn't mind getting one of those next time. Tip - there's a small lot in front, or street parking. It's far enough away from the main area of Rutherford that you should be able to find street parking if the lot is full.

They also offer sweet and savory pastries, as well as salads, açaí bowls, and toasts. I enjoyed their signature avocado toast with a "green morning" juice. In an area where there aren't many healthy food establishments, Shakey's is a welcome addition!
