It's scary yet amazing that I'm now taking advice from my 5 year old on where to get my nails done. Especially since her criteria for a 5 star nail salon consists of: - as many different shades of pink as possible - lots of glitter nail polish options (to go over the pink) - ability to create designs on nails (ex: rainbows, little animals, etc) However, when I mentioned to her I was going to get my nails done I decided to try her favorite spot, Girlfriends, even though she wasn't joining me! She's been lucky enough to attend a few bday parties at Girlfriends the past few months. Yes, my 5 year old gets her nails done more than I do these days. While I can appreciate impressive nail design and a bit of glitter, my criteria for a good nail salon: - cleanliness - speedy - vinylux polish (dries fast and stays on my nails for at least 2 weeks). They've got the cleanliness thing down, but didn't quite meet the rest of my criteria. Granted I was rushing my nail technician to get to another appointment, but it felt slower than what I'm used to at my regular nail salon. They had a few vinylux polishes to choose from, but they were so old that the nail technician recommended we don't use them. The result...4 days later my nails chipped. When I mentioned I got my nails done at my hair appointment later (day of luxury for me!) my stylist said "isn't that place for kids?" This would be exactly why I'll likely only go back w/ my daughter in tow. read more

Used Groupon for manic & pedic for the 1st visit here. Alla seemed to be very experience in what she was doing except she hurt one of my big toe and one of my finger pushing too hard into my cuticle which finally recovered after more than a week. I guessed she was in a hurry even though there was no other customer waiting. In the end, I tipped her more than 15% on the regular charge disregarding somewhat mediocre service. read more

Purchased the coupon and I tried to make an appointment and told me I cannot use their coupon because I cannot use it on holiday weeks. Well it sure doesn't say that in your fine print or anywhere! Took my daughter here...they were very nice and painted her nails and toes and had a huge selection that she loved. She was able to do unique designs and was very happy, which, as a dad, made me very happy. read more

Bought a WeDeal for Girlfriends to use for my daughter's birthday party. I wasn't clear on exactly what we were getting since there were so many things listed: nails, hair, milkshakes, etc. The salon is right in downtown Winnetka. It is a cute little store with lots of jewelry, makeup, and nail stuff for sale. When we got there, they immediately got the girls started. They got to choose a really cool nail design from a large selection, they got mini-manicures, and drank milkshakes. That would have been enough, but then each girl got to custom make a lip gloss and then got those color strands put in their hair. The girls had a FANTASTIC time and loved their nails. They played fun music while we were in there and the girls danced around while they waited for their turn to be pampered. The women there were nice enough, but there was a high school girl working there who did a fantastic job taking care of the girls. The party was AWESOME! We would definitely do the party again, or just go their for manicures. read more

Got a groupon, for a mani/pedi deal, close to my home figured I'd try it, as I was going on vacation. Cute little spot, I was one of the two customers inside (not sure if it's just me, but in general, I hate being the only or one of a few customers in places. I feel slightly awkward). They have a large window that looks into the street, keeps it bright inside, very clean, I was offered coffee, tea etc. Anyway, the owner greeted me and was the one to do my service, she was very nice and seated me for my pedicure right away. I picked out my color, my pedicure was exactly what I want, pampering but not overly so-I don't need to be sitting there excessively long, she did a great job softening up calluses, trimming nails, etc. I brought in my own nail polish color for my manicure, I was going on vacation and if I had any chips I wanted to be able to fix. No problems there, I also happened to tear my nail as I was leaving the house to get my mani, she applied acrylic to fix it, no extra charge, I was really grateful for that-the tear was pretty high up and painful. Manicure same as pedicure, professional, clean, neat, cuticles trimmed and polish neatly applied. I was told to sit at the drying station, again offered a drink. Only issue I had was I wasn't sure how long to sit there, the drying station doesn't face the front of the shop, so I was staring at the nail polish wall...it felt weird. She walked away, and I think because I was one of two clients, it made it especially quiet and weird. The women were very friendly-it was just really quiet. I had a good experience, however, i think my nail polish was applied without my nails being dehydrated or wiped with an alcohol swipe bc my polish literally peeled off later the same day :( I'm glad I brought my own polish. I went there this past weekend for a pedicure with my daughter to celebrate her 13th birthday. It was not a great experience. My massage chair was broken. When I brought it to the techs attention she indicated that I should just lean harder back into the chair. She did NOT move me to the empty chair that was available. She then proceeded with the worst pedicure I ever received: she massaged the top (!!) of my foot only. She also left a huge glob of polish on the side of my toe nail and then told me I was done. I had to point it out to her in order to get it fixed. When I went to pay I told the cashier about the chair. Her only comment was to say 'I'll tell the owner' and 'how do you want to pay?' For all the hype this place receives I would expect a much better experience. We will not be back. read more

Don't. I don't know what went wrong. I went years ago and it was amazing and this was just bad. I emailed and called ahead for specialized manicure, they told me they could do it. When I got there, they had no idea what I was talking about or how to do it. The Nail polish chipped not even a day later on my nails. I had ask her numerous times to cut my nails shorter, instead of just filing them to be shorter. Worst pedicure I've ever gotten. Took so long to do a manicure and pedicure, I just wanted to walk out. read more

Very good experience. My nails look great and it was very relaxing. They had a very broad selection of OPI and Essie (including their latest collections) along with some China Glaze and other brands. It looks like no one has posted a review in a while. I have never written one before but my daughter and I have been so disappointed the last two times we have gone that I felt compelled to say something. We have been loyal customers for years because they cater to kids as well as adults and offer a nail design service you seldom see anywhere else. However, lately, and this is really due to what seems like a turn over in staff, the work has not been up to par. The woman who did my daughters nails the last 2 times, was very rushed and wasn't talented enough to recreate any of the designs we picked. This past sunday we had an appt for 2 people and shortly after we arrived, another party of two arrived booked at the exact same time. There were only 2 employees there so how was that going to work? Unfortunately, the current employees aren't very talented at their jobs and the quality of service has gone down hill. When we left, disappointed, my 11 year old daughter said, "we won't be back." read more

This is not the same Girlfriends any longer! When I made my appointment last Tues for a mani/pedi on Fri, I told the person that I would be using a Local Flavor voucher. She asked if it had expired and I said no that it didn't expire until late April. When I showed up for my appt. I gave them my voucher first thing. After getting my mani/pedi and I was drying my nails THAN they told me that they couldn't honor my voucher as they were under new ownership and I would have to pay the difference between the voucher and total amount due. I was confused! I said, I mentioned it on the phone, I gave it to you an hour ago when I first walked in and you tell me NOW after the service has been performed that you won't honor the voucher?! Who does that? Seems pretty shady and not legit. The worst thing was that 3 employees pretty much ganged up on me at the register so I paid, just so that I could get out of there. It was awful. I called to get the owner's number to ask for a refund and they never responded. Local Flavor gave me my $ back, but I won't go there again! read more
