Oh, Guibbe Rosse...I want to think you're super weird and creeper because you have a gaggle of men outside trying to direct people into the restaurant...but your food was tasty, and seriously, you can't be the view of people watching in Piazza della Repubblica. This restaurant is technically outside, but it's entirely covered by plastic and has heat lamps going to keep you warm. The inside looks like you're eating at a 5-star restaurant. Nice table linens, comfy couches/seats, and waiters dressed the the nines. Even the guys outside trying to direct you inside are in suits. Amazing. At this point in my stay, I was almost at my carb limit, so I went in with the intention of getting a gigantic salad. But, I couldn't pass up the pizza bufala. I wish that there was more meat on the pizza, but I really did like the thinly slices pieces of tasso ham. This pizza is pretty moist, as the mozzarella is fresh. I did have a side salad with olive oil and balsamic, with a complimentary basket of bread. You know, just in case I hadn't already had a million carbs already. The service was great. I never had to ask for anything, and the wait staff conversed with me in Italian (many other restaurants had answered me in English even when I spoke in Italian). It was a nice perk to be seated right in the midst of Piazza della Repubblica so that I could watch all the passersby walking the street. And it was an extra nice touch to have the inside heating. I think the prices are comparable to other restaurants in the area. I would definitely come back during my next visit to Firenze. read more

In one of the busiest sections of central Florence, but easy to overlook - it is not visible from the piazza. Hint, if you are facing the Apple Store it is right behind you. You can read about its interesting history while inside. What is most remarkable is that they can make a vodka Martini without instruction. When we ate here, we sat outside which was nice to be able to people watch. Our waiter was friendly and funny, but at times seemed preoccupied. The food was delicious. I got a steak that was perfect. It was thick, juicy and spiced well. The potatoes were to die for. My husband had a thick soup of sorts to start that also tasted great, kind of like a minestrone flavoring. This restaurant is in a line with a few others and there are hosts/hostesses that stand outside to try to lead customers in. Watching them interact was fun. We discovered Guibbe Rosse just off the Ponte Vecchio bridge in a piazza with a carousel. We were reviewing the menu next door when Nicola with Guibbe Rosse enticed us over with promises of free Prosecco (wine) and a 10% discount. We were delighted with our servers, who were the friendliest we encountered our entire trip. The lasagna was excellent and my friend also reported the spaghetti carbonara was delicious. It was the only place we went back to eat again. The same gentlemen served us and brought us free Prosecco, again, along with free rides to the carousel. The price for a full meal at Guibbe was in line with the average for the area - between 20-30 euro - and includes a pasta dish, salad, water, and service/seating charges. Additional notes for eating in Italy: everything is sold a la carte. Pasta dishes range from 10-15 euro. A mixed green salad, which is lettuce/arugula with tomatoes and carrots will cost between 4-8 euro, and forget about asking for ranch dressing in Italy because they've never heard of it. Salad dressing is vinegar and oil, which I'm actually a fan of, but it's good to know in case you're not. Also, water isn't free and costs around 4 euro for a liter. You're not required to tip servers in Italy, but sometimes you'll see a percentage-based "service charge" and a seating charge ranging from 2-5 euro per person. We generally only ate one full meal each day and stopped for smaller meals or snacks in between. Bottled water and soda can be found cheap at shops similar to a dollar store in the US. read more

Stop here for a quick lunch one day during our visit in Florence and what a surprise! My black rice scampi was so delicious! The tuna tartare that my husband ordered was really good too. It's located at the plaza which is good for people watching over a drink. read more

This place was the only spot we ran into while it was raining and we were hungry so we went inside. The service was super slow because one guy was working, but the food tasted like a chain restaurant. Nothing special and the meal was around $17 per person for lunch. Food: 3 Service: 1-4: started awful but improved at the very end. Atmosphere: 3.5 It's a nice location and you sit in a cool "tent" area that's not joined to the restaurant. Plus, when it's cold outside they have the heat lamps. The waiter didn't come by for over 5 minutes. Yes, I understand we're in Italy and things run a little slower here, but at least come by and introduce yourself. Plus, there is only one waiter for the entire area. We ordered our drinks and food together and received our drinks very quickly (oh, by the way, my husband ordered a glass of wine and they brought 2). They then delivered my food to the table shortly thereafter, but never brought my husband's food. We waited about 15 minutes, then FINALLY got our waiter's attention to tell him. He was apologetic, but didn't offer an explanation; also, if he would've came over at any point after they gave me my food he would've known we hadn't got my husband's plate. He brought the food, and my husband ordered a third glass of wine. The food is actually pretty flavorful for a touristy area. I had the spaghetti carbonara and my husband had mushroom gnocchi. My husband had finished his food and asked for the check before he brought him the wine. When he brought the check, he basically knew and said it was a sucky experience, so they gave us the third glass of wine free and a percentage off our bill. I did not eat here so this is only about this place as a cafe for coffee and as a bar to drink. I am a big fan of some of the 'better' big cafes in Florence but this place came recommended during this recent trip. It is 'artsy', friendly and down to earth. I loved having a macchiato there...sorry...in the mid 90's that was... They had a little sugar bowl contraption (glass/steel) filled with little "droplets" of chocolate - just sitting on the counter for the customers!! I loved having a 1,300 Lira macchiato...back then, the exchange was 1 USD to 1,200 Lira...those were the days... Last time we went some years back, not only was there this awful carousel right smack in front of them....our daughter loved that ride SO much, we practically asked Nonna (grandma in Italian) to sit around the bench so she will not have to stand around waiting... read more

The "owner" talked us into eating here, we fell for it thinking it was atleast going to be a good meal for those prices. I went for pasta. It tasted ok (exactly like a meal I made myself in 10 mintues back home in Sweden though so nothing special) but the pasta wasn't cooked properly and kind of hard to chew. The service was horrible after the sweet talk that got us to sit down. Overall food was meh, he was meh, but the people watching was probably the best part of this place. Our first night in Firenze after walking around the city we decide to see what we would come across to eat ..we came accross this place , good choice. you have seating outside & inside the restaurant, we sat out side. nothing special but it was cozy, nice service. we decide to go with a bottle of red wine for our diner. they give u a nice basket of bread with a spicy olive oil , very good hard not to over eat some because it is pretty tasty. we went with the plate of meats to share , this was so good .. it had chicken, beef , steak, sausages ...oh man way to much for us two !! since we were unaware of how large the portions were we ordred a penne pasta in garlic spicy sauce ...this was delicous !! my main course i had the pork chops , really good & my date had a steak good as well. Everything was really good but way too much food for us in the end. this place was great , I would definatley return if in Firenze again. read more

I think the waiters are sick of tourists who don't know Italian. The vegetable soup was good but the waiters were impatient and seemed really annoyed that I spoke mostly English. My husband & I had a wonderful time. The food was fantastic...I had a spicy pasta dish and my husband had the Fiorentina Steak. The manager sat us right in front so we had an unobstructed view of the comings and goings in the piazza. We thought the food was go great that we went back...and we were only in Florence 5 nights! Pretty mediocre place, although based on the price I honestly think this place deserves a worse rating. Service was pretty poor comparatively to other restaurants in the Florence area such as Simbiose. The food I ordered, lasagna, came out exceptionally fast. This turned out to be due to the fact that it wasn't done. It was extremely cold in the center, however was quite soft and mushy. This is the worst restaurant in Florence. Our experience from the start should have stopped us from eating here. The maitre dei pointed to a table for us to be seated. There we sat way too long before we were acknowledged for our order of beverages and appetizers. By this time two other families have been seated received there beverages and appetizers. We still have not received anything. Finally my husband gets the attention of another waiter, explains our frustrations of being ignored. We immediately receive our beverages and appetizers. Again we wait for our waiter way too long. By this time the other families have already received there meals. Again my husband flags down another waiter.(same one) he fetches our waiter to take our order. He finally takes our order. AGAIN! We wait way too long. Because we have already spent over 35 minutes at this restaurant we decided to stay. We were very hungry and it was getting late. Just as we are ready to give up, our food arrives. I look at my meal and realize it's wrong! The other two families have left the restaurant. I was so hungry but chose to correct the meal and wait once again. When I finally got my meal it was cold. Ate in the outdoor tent, which although there were heat lamps, it was still too cold to eat dinner there (unfortunately the actual restaurant is tiny and doesn't have many tables for larger than 2 people). The food was very mediocre, I had a pasta dish with porcini mushrooms (10 euro) which was very bland and the pasta didn't taste very fresh. Worst service we've had in Florence. The food was not good. The chicken had no flavor and was still raw and undercooked. There were barely any other tables filled yet it took an hour to get my raw chicken. I complained to the manager who did nothing and I still had to pay for my nasty meal. Don't waste your time here. Wow. What a bad experience. Terrible service, mediocre food and an extra charge on the bill. When we asked the bad waiter if 'service' had already been included on the bill, he said "No- you tip now." which was uncomfortable to begin with as I knew I did not want to tip for such bad service. Then we saw a "16%S Tax" on the bill and asked what that was for. He said it was a city tax. When I showed him the receipt for another place we had eaten at earlier that day that charged no "city tax" he pointed out that instead they had charged a 2€ per person service fee. He then eventually admitted that the "city tax" was the same as "service fee" and that this restaurant charges 16% of the bill (and I quote) "because we ate outside on the square." So we paid an extra 10,21€ that is not listed anywhere. It's the Wild Wild West in Italian restaurants. They seem to be able to charge whatever, whenever. Be aware and definitely skip this place. read more
