This is the second house we've had renovated by Gary. This house was outdated and unattractive but we knew it could be special. We are always happy with Gary's work. He is a competent professional and trusted contractor with a solid team of subcontractors who have been doing this work for decades. With this renovation, we brought our 1912 Craftsman bungalow down to the studs. This was a full-gut renovation that involved replacing all mechanicals, drywall, new bathrooms, new kitchen and doing a primary bath addition. With Gary's construction expertise, we were able to restore the home while maintaining its original charm and bring our design to life. Some of Gary's many contributions included framing a new tray/drop ceiling, installing custom window and door casings to match the originals. He also rebuilt the front porch railings and reinforced the porch ceiling so it would accommodate a porch swing. He built our backyard studio shed in just a couple days and it's adorable. While nearly everything is new, you can't tell. And that is a compliment to the quality of craftsmanship. Gary doesn't cut corners and it shows. It is very important that you trust your contractor and that they have integrity and do what they say they are going to do. Experience is also very important. Gary has all of this. He did our addition in 2020 (we reviewed him and his work back then) and we called him again to create a little window seat/coat area which was a closet before off the front entrance. Gary did a great job repairing the upper balcony on our 1928 house. The support beams had deteriorated. He had lumber specially milled to match the original beam. He replaced the flooring and the upper beam that supports the roof. It was quite a job and required a good measure of skill. This also required stucco work that matched perfectly to the existing. We had damage to our garage roof from a tree limb that fell on it due to high winds. It was great working with GK. The owner (Karan aka Gary) was very easy to work with and for the initial estimates was prompt to the appointment. Karan provided a reasonable estimate and we had a good discussion about the work. Older homes are special, they hold lots of memories and are an endless opportunity to provide general maintenance. We recently had a small bathroom that needed a lot of help, painting of vintage kitchen cabinets and the installation of new interior doors. We weren't sure if our project was "big enough" but our first call was to GK General Construction (GKGC). The owner Gary, listened to what we needed to repair, was respectful of our small budget and did not try to upsell us to redo the entire kitchen. How refreshing! The gentlemen that GKGC had work in our home, are real craftsmen! The tile is beautiful and all the tile joints subtlety blend together. The kitchen cabinets had not been "loved" since the 1930s, but after GKGCs painters worked on them, the cabinet finish was perfect and worth every penny! Quick follow up update. We worked with Gary again to repair the "garage" in the rear of our property. Called in the morning, the gentleman (I guess Gary) was immediately curt and seemed somewhat annoyed. Being an army veteran, directness does not bother me. He then asked for pictures of the potential job: I needed a carport assembled and set in concrete. I did as requested and texted him several pictures of the space and pre-fabricated carport. He then said he only got one picture, then corrected himself, then said he would call me back... Didn't call me back till almost 8 o'clock at night to say "I'm not interested. This is soley based on the estimate visit. I found Gary to be not professional and rude. I had sent pictures through yelp and set up an appointment to get an estimate. He arrived on time and I started to tell him about the residing project. As we started to walk around, he said "no I don't want the project" and just walked off with no explanation. My partner thought that was very rude and yelled to him "why (amongst other things)". Gary then said something about windows being replaced which we never said. Basically he was making assumptions about the job without asking questions. I understand it's his prerogative and it's his business, but why waste my time and not be professional? We've had other reputable contractors come and provide us with good information, estimates, etc. Gary later called me back and to give me an explanation and said he could take the job in the summer. What?! Then later after I posted the review he texted 2 times apologizing with more explanation and requested me to remove my review. I would say don't waste your time on someone who can't communicate. read more
