This woman was rude and made me feel like s**t about my hair. I will never give this woman another cent of my money ever again. She may be good at cutting curly hair, but it is NOT worth her rude behavior. She started off the session by telling me I clearly don't know how to take care of my hair and that's why it's so damaged. Excuse me, I have hypothyroidism which makes my hair grow in frizzy and dry. It's not my fault! AND I had already told her that in the consultation session! I told her that because it also makes my hair grow in uneven, so it needs special layering. She goes, "Well you must blow dry your hair everyday." I said, "No, I never blow dry my hair, I don't know how." She even started talking to her assistant and next customer about how damaged my hair was! How embarrassing! Why would you do that?? When she was coloring my hair, I said I wanted it red (I had blonde hair at the time). She "suggested" that we leave in blonde highlights. I kept saying, "no, thank you." and she kept insisting. Eventually I gave up saying no, and I hated it. At one point, I was so fed up with being there and having her talk down to me about how I don't take care of my hair, I almost got up and left! The Phoenix salon in Walnut Creek was SUCH a better experience, not to mention cheaper (and they know how to cut curly hair). I only tried this salon because it was closer to my house. I'm never leaving the Phoenix salon again! What an awful experience!! read more

Easily The Best curly cut and customer experience of my life. Lisa is warm, friendly, and so easy to talk with. Her salon is a two chair place which feels intimate without feeling claustrophobic. There was another client there when I arrived. I was warmly greeted and easily felt like fast friends. Lisa has been trained in Lorraine Massey's Diva Curl cutting and styling method. I found Lisa first on divacurl.com as an affiliated stylist. I was really happy with the cut and will definitely go back. I liked that she cut it dry and made my thin and fine curls look fuller. She's the first stylist to style my hair naturally curly, the way I would do at home. (i.e., I don't need to wash and dry it to see how the cut really turned out.) She explained to me step by step all the styling techniques she used, making sure along the way I was understanding. I recommend her very highly for curly hair girls. Update: It's been almost two months since my cut and I'm due in another few weeks. The cut is still holding out great. I've gotten several comments on my new cut and lots of people have noticed my hair is actually curlier than before! I'm looking forward to my next visit to Lisa. read more

Wow! I just love my hair now which is not something I could ever really say. I went to Lisa because she was recommended as an expert in the Deva Curl method. She took one look and me and said "we have some real potential here". Then she sat me down and we talked about color - which is AMAZING - and curls. Absolutely loved my experience here today. From the moment I walked in, Rania was personable and welcoming. She asked me what I was looking for and helped me come up with a cut that would best suit me. I can't say enough beautiful things about Rania or her lovely salon. I have - had - very long, thick, fuzzy curly hair that I didn't let anyone touch. I haven't gotten a hair cut in nearly two years. Call it trust issues, call it too many stylists who claim to know curly hair when they don't, but I'll wait 12, 18, 24 months between cuts instead of risking a bad one I shell good money out for. I love my long, heavy hair so much that I never take more than two or three inches off. It's my security blanket and I kept it like that even when it meant my hair wasn't the healthiest it could be. Rania listened to my hair routine and all of my anxieties, and gently let me know all of the ways I was drowning my curls in cream-based products. She gave me suggestions based on my hair's specific needs and talked me through every single thing she was doing to my hair during the dry cut. My hair is just a few inches below my shoulders now, but it's that way because Rania is someone you can trust with that kind of major change. It's also that way because my hair's actually springing up into ringlets instead of half wavy, half straight chunks, covered in a day's worth of conditioner. I wouldn't have known what I was doing to it, or how healthy and happy it could be, if I had landed in another salon. It's worth noting that she was finishing up with two other clients when I came in, both with curly hair. After me, another young girl with really tight ringlets walked in. OMG - I could not disagree more with the negative review. Lisa is FABULOUS!! The woman knows what she's doing when it comes to curly hair - I've been working with her for several months, and I never knew my hair could look this good!! Besides the great cut, Lisa colored my hair a beautiful shade that brings out my eyes, and she turned me on to the DevaCurl line of products, and took the time to show me how to use them most effectively. I don't find Lisa "rude' - I find her a straight-shooter with a strong, funny personality. Putting my hair in her hands has been a great decision for me. I'm also going to strongly disagree with the negative review. Lisa has worked with me and my curly hair to get it to a place where it has never looked better. I have complete strangers constantly telling me how great my hair is. Never had that before. Lisa loves what she does, and she is constantly learning new techniques to make curly-heads look great. When I first went to Lisa she asked me if I liked how my hair looked. I told her I thought it was OK, and she told me: "I don't think your hair style and color matches your personality. You are much smarter and classier than the impression you first give by how your hair looks." How wonderful to find a hairdresser that actually cares how you look and tells you honestly what image you project. Maybe some people's egos are too fragile to handle someone being totally honest with them, but I find Lisa's approach is very needed when you want to look your best. She is a great hairdresser - all her customers' hair always looks fabulous when Lisa is done with them!! I highly recommend her to anyone!! read more

No one was able to do my hair, before I would always leave the hair salon disappointed as my hair would be cut way to short and had no shape. I found her through the Deva Curl website and made an appointment for a dry curly cut. We cut 12 inches off! The cut is amazing, the layers fit my face perfectly and she introduced me to some new products which my hair is loving. (The day I got my hair cut a random lady at Costco stopped me in an aisle to tell me how great my hair was!) Ohhhh, Lisa is the BEST Deva hairstylist out there!! I had never been comfortable with my curly hair until I started going to Lisa almost 2 years ago. When I say Deva, she is trained in the Deva Curl technique. Other stylists at reputable salons told me they could cut curly hair, but what happened? I walked out and immediately put my hair into a ponytail b/c it was too poofy or triangular. Lisa is a hair artist...does what she thinks will look good and it DOES! I have VERY thick and VERY curly 3b hair and she has tamed my mane! I drive 30 minutes for my haircut and it is very worth it. Yay! read more

"Well at least you do that right" ~ Rania tells me about the fact that I only brush my curly hair after the shower. I have to say that I did some research before making this appointment and originally made it based on the reviews for the prior owner Lisa Calhoun. With reluctance I kept it when I found out there was a new owner. What I ended up with was a long appointment that left me feeling anything but glamorous. It was a long lecture on how I took care of my hair wrong, how damaged it was, and really nothing positive. Not one thing. My daughter texted me from the corner asking if we could leave because she didn't like the way Rania was talking to me. Also she didn't even cut the front of my hair! She said - "I didn't do anything with this because it is too short and damaged, maybe grow it out some and we can cut it next time" I thought you cut damaged hair?? When I left my daughter said I looked like I got out of the deep fryer . Oh and it was $120. Sorry Rania, I hate to leave bad reviews, but customer service needs to be a part of the experience of going to a salon. This was not my experience today and this curly girl won't be back. read more

I have to agree with the comment about Lisa being rude...I called several Deva Curl stylists to decide where to go since none of them were very close to me so i knew I would have to travel a ways ( an hour). In her talking to me, I was not impressed as she told me if there was any disagreement about what to do with my hair it would be her way ( yes, she actually said that). When I told her I would have to think about whether to make an appointment with her ( my "nice" way of saying I was not going to come to her) she said, "OK, Sue, you're off the hook!" My hair is quite wavy and when she cut my hair the wave (and curl) fell right into place! The next step was my first 'balyage'. This is a process like highlighting only better!
