(I wrote this review on Eric's Yelp but adding it here to show some love for Glama-Rama!) This is the first time I ventured far from my tried and true stylist and I feel like I'm sneaking off with a new mistress and cheating on my former stylist!! In my defense, I need someone closer to home and with a bit more availability in their schedule...plus, have you seen the magic that is Eric's work with these colors?! I think I'm ready to take this step to a new stylist and that stylist's name is Eric Gutierrez. My friend recommended Eric after I saw how amazing her hair looked. The perfect shade of mushroom brown. She said, "You know how you show a stylist a picture and you want your hair to look exactly like the picture? That's Eric." TRUER WORDS HAVE NEVER BEEN SPOKEN! I had gone from super blonde to a faded brown (after trying to go dark) because I was ready to quit my blonde-Asian-girl-days and was not happy with the faded color. I knew I didn't want to go blonde again and I wanted to try something dark but different. Enter: dark denim blue. Or maybe dark silvery blue? Steel blue? I don't know, but I showed Eric one picture and then another one and then another one and basically said "yah something like that?!" My friend was right: my hair turned out exactly how I wanted it in the picture(s). I am sold! Also: Eric was so sweet to run and grabbed me a cup of hot tea when I started having a massive coughing attack while my head was in the sink. I've been really struggling with leaving this review, because I love Glama-Rama SF and Frankie is a super sweet person, but my haircut just came out so incredibly different than I asked that I feel like I have to. I went in asking for a choppy bob that was a little bellow my ears. I ended up with a cut that is basically a bowl cut that landed around my mid ear. On top of that, Frankie seemed to have scheduled her clients so close together she didn't have time to dry it before her next client got there. I basically just went to my car with a wet, way too short, awkwardly shaped cut and starting crying. There's another review for Frankie that says she's great at cutting curly hair, and I bet that's true! But if you're going to Glama-Rama for Frankie, maybe make super sure she understands what you're asking for before she jumps in and starts cutting. read more

I've been coming to Glama-Rama for a few years now off and on, and had always been happy with my cuts and color. Sometimes if it's a new person they pouf out my curls more than I want when drying it after but that's not a big deal. This last time though, I was not very happy about my cut. I saw Joey, who specializes in curly hair so I thought it would be the perfect fit and was excited to get the cut I wanted after the last cut at an Ulta salon got me a bob even tho I had asked for it to stay below the shoulders. I had explained that to her, how sad I was that so much more of my hair got cut off than I asked for so to have the wrong cut twice really sucks. She asked if I wanted layers, I told her I want some long layers but not a lot - especially not much in back, because my hair is very curly and frizzes. She suggested *some* layers in back to give my hair some volume, and I told her to go for it as long as they aren't short layers in back. I told her I wanted layers mostly framing my face in front. Well, the overall length was just slightly shorter than I asked for. Not as short as Ulta had cut it and my hair does grow fast so that would not have been a big issue. It looked nice when I left, a little curlier than I usually style it but when I got home I noticed I had REALLY short layers in back. Like, extremely short chunky layers that were even shorter than most of the layers in front :/ Some seemed to be only about 2-3 inches long. I waited a long time to leave this review, as I wanted to see if maybe I would learn to like it, but no. I got the cut in December. They're going to take a while to grow back in, I'm still not happy with how short they are. The way I like styling it, if I don't style it just like she did, the ends look frayed and it hangs awkwardly. The layers were done with a razor, which was also a new thing, and maybe that caused more of it to be cut. Whatever the reason, I don't feel like going back again. Ever since Moe left the salon, I haven't had a regular stylist I've been quite as happy with. I was satisfied with most of them and the cuts had still been great, but she had some kind of magic fingers that made my hair curl just the way I like it after the cut. I don't know where I'll go but I don't want to pay a higher price and drive from Richmond to Oakland to get a cut I'm unhappy with after specifically asking for a certain thing to NOT be done, and leaving with that very thing I didn't want. Photos attached (the one with the curlier hair) show my hair that same day of the cut. The other photo is what I showed her as an example of the length I wanted to go back to. I would love to leave a 5 star review but unfortunately I did not have that experience... I came in for a bleach and tone with Tabitha. I asked for an icy white color for my hair. I understand this is hard to achieve. My hair has always lifted very easily and I have obtained white colored hair several times before, in only one session, with other stylists elsewhere. I had to ask to have my hair rebleached after the first bleach because it was still very yellow. After the second bleach my hair was still very yellow. Tabitha offered to have me come back to tone my hair, complementary, which I thought was very nice of her! I came in a few days later to tone my hair with her and she toned it to a dark grey color. She told me it would wash out after one or two washes. I washed my hair every day for a week and a half and my hair only changed from dark to light grey. I ultimately completed an at-home chelate process with lemon juice and dish soap to get my hair back to a basic blonde. To be honest I would appreciate a refund. To be fair, the trim and blow drying she did was fantastic. But six hours and $200+ for grey hair is not what's up. I will not be returning. read more

I hate posting bad reviews, but I feel it's my responsibility to pass on my experience in case it's helpful to someone else. I was going from brunette to blonde. I had been flying down to LA to see an awesome colorist that was taking me blonde but it was inconvenient and expensive to do that. I went for a couple consultations around the area where I live. Some people told me they didn't want to bleach my hair anymore because it was too risky. Someone said my hair could take one more bleach but it would fall apart after that (my hair was in really good condition even though it had been bleached a number of times.) I went to Glama-Rama and Ari Lea was so dang confident. She was sure she could get me platinum. She was all about it! No one had been that confident with me so I decided to go for it. The first time I went in... She said it would take 3 hours I think I was there 6, she had me leave that evening with a conditioning treatment on and come back again in the morning. When I got home I saw that the lululemon sweater I was wearing had bleach all over it. It's totally ruined. The next morning when I went in, she was rinsing my hair out, and a few strands of hair fell across my face. When I went to pick them off my face they disintegrated. Like literally fell apart in my fingers. I asked her if that's what was happening to my hair, and she responded in a shaky tone... "not all of it". Anyway, my hair was so fried as she was trying to blow dry it it was breaking off and flying all over the place. I told her we're just going to have to shave my head, but she insisted it was salvageable. She was shaken by the fact that my hair disintegrated and she seemed upset. I think she gave me a free conditioning treatment or something but I paid for the service-- and called the salon later in the day to make sure she didn't feel too bad about it. These things happen. Because my hair was so fried I needed to trim off the bottom portions as it grew out. She offered to give me a half price cut. The cut she gave me was great! She's good at cutting but I guess she thought it was so great that she raised the price of the cut when I went to pay. It went from $37.50 to $65 or something. Which was disappointing but I paid it. She also offered to grab me some olaplex at wholesale prices. I work in the beauty industry and have a license too, so I can easily get ahold of professional products at wholesale prices but when I paid her for them she charged me retail. So, so far I've lost my brand new lululemon sweater, most of my hair and I'm bleeding cash on haircuts and products I don't need. After I'd seen her for the haircut, I asked her if we could continue bleaching just the roots since I'd already sacrificed so much money and time to get to this point. She said absolutely. We can just bleach your virgin roots and there shouldn't ever be any problem again. She canceled 3 appointments of mine over the next 5 months until she finally told me to grow out all my virgin hair and she would bleach me after I'd regrown an entire head of my natural hair. There is no way that I would ever let her touch my virgin hair after what happened. She wants me to grow my hair for 2 years and then return to her so she can possibly destroy what I have again? Honestly, I. Just. Cannot. The whole point of her bleaching my hair was so I could get to the point where I could just bleach the roots. She kept telling me that's what we were gonna do, that's the plan, this is gonna work,, and then she ignores me and cancels all my appointments and tells me she's not comfortable doing my hair. I asked her what she suggested I do since I have black and some gray roots and bleached hair. Is there a way to soften the look? Is there a semi permanent color? Should we cut it off--- she never responded. Basically I realized that everything she told me wound up being untrue... 1 she could take me blonde and it would be no problem 2. The haircut would be half price 3. The olaplex would be wholesale 4. We could continue bleaching now that we've gotten to this point. So, I don't recommend Ari Lea unless you're only going for cuts and happy paying full price read more

I'm writing this review for Joey, the stylist who cut and colored my fiance's hair. I'll start with the positive. The cut was fine, it looked good. The color was the problem. From the cost to the color, to the recolor, all bad. The color was supposed to be silver/grey, a small section of bangs. Joey was on board with the plan, she just got new silvery tones in the color line and was excited to use them. She warned my fiance on how quickly it would wash out (which is just what it is). The cost was $120-$130, for one strip of bangs, but if the color was on point, I wouldn't complain. The problem is that it isn't, in fact, as I'm sitting here looking at it, it's currently brassy blond with a light green overtone. My fiance followed up with Joey on IG right away(where she posted my fiance's haircut), the next day, before washing her hair. With the holidays, it took 2 days to get a response. Joey's response was to come back and pay more money to recolor it or to go to a beauty supply store and buy more color for a DIY experience. My fiance is kinder than I am, and explained to her that paying $130 for hair-color on a section of bangs warranted an expectation of it looking good- for at least a week? or god forbid the next day. So, we went in together to get it recolored, which Joey was happy to do. Joey said the color would lighten after the first wash, because she didn't shampoo it, just condition it. Well, the color disappeared altogether, after one wash. It's just a brassy shade of blonde. My fiance reached out to her again- courteously letting Joey know that the new color in the shop was a dud. Now crickets... There are lots of good spots to get your hair done in Oakland, unfortunately, this isn't one of them. read more

I got a major cut with Joey recently and I absolutely love it! I'm not one to pick a hairstylist and stick with them for even two cuts but now that I've found this place and Joey I'll be a regular. I found Joey because like a few others, I searched queer haircut in Oakland and Glama-Rama popped up. I made an appointment easily and everything worked out perfectly. Joey is super easy to talk to and understood what I wanted instantly. She also understood the different textures in my hair and thought that my big jump from medium/long to super short and asymmetrical would be easy to do and look great. I'm reaaaaaallly happy! I went in yesterday wanting a black-to-lavender ombre. The stylist, Jen, was really friendly and told me upfront that we might not get it as light as I want. I assumed she meant it would be a medium purple--which I I would be ok with. But 4 hours later, my hair was a barely noticeable dark dark purple :( You can only sort of see the color in the light. Jen said it was because my hair was so so dark it was hard to lift the black off, but it seemed like she was rushing to finish me because she had another client soon and someone else had to finish blow drying my hair. If more time was spent for the bleaching process, I feel like my hair would've been lighter. It was barely a medium brown after bleaching. I know it's hard to do dark virgin Asian hair, but I have Asian friends and see Asians walking around all the time with bright, bleached hair, and I went to an Asian salonist years ago who had no problem bleaching my hair to the bright color I wanted. Yes, asian hair is tricky, but I wish they were trained more in dealing with different kinds of clientele, or gave me a clearer warning about the results, and I would've just gone to an Asian salon instead. Everyone on the staff was super friendly, and I got a lot of compliments, but I feel like I'm settling for a color so far away from what I wanted for $200 :( read more

After my second haircut I think it's fair to not consider the amazing haircut a fluke! My regular gal was on vacation (and in Sacramento, but I've been making the trek for 4 years) but needed a cut desperately. As an proud wearer of short (above ear) hair- it's a special bond with a hairstylist. I started to ask around to the folks with short hair and was given a recommendation of Glam- since they have a variety of stylists. I did a bit of research (yelp, continued asking, online, etc) only to find that this may actually work! But who, who would be the mate for the next several years of hair journey that I was on? I isolated my search and found Sonja Ekre. I walked in and of course super nervous because the last time I took a hair risk like this- I looked like Peter Pan. (See the review on Aveda). Sonja was super nice and really attentive to my situation. After 5 weeks; my hair cut grew out beautifully. I continued to receive a number of compliments and knew I'd be back to see Sonja. Second trip was this last Friday. And still in love. It's not a fluke folks- she's really amazing. Does short hair well and I'm sure cuts the heck out of a long style too! read more

Extremely upset with my last experience here. I've been here on a few different occasions and each experience has become progressively worse. My hair this time was done by Eric Gutierrez. Eric complained that he was tired and hot the entire time he was doing my hair. He seemed careless and distracted and I did not feel like I was being taken care of or taken seriously. He proceeded to dry cut my hair saying that he would wash it afterwards (which to me makes no sense). He also never showed me the back of my haircut (which is important because it's a bob). Every stylist who has ever cut my hair (even at freakin Fantastic Sams) has showed me the back. Honestly, this was one of the most unprofessional, worst experiences I have ever had in a hair salon. This place's standards have gone downhill and the prices have gone up! It was $85 for a haircut to go from shoulder length to a bob. Won't be returning to this salon. read more

I called the salon to book an appointment last friday. They got me in for a consultation the next day and made my appointment for this Friday after I got out of work. I've been seeing Katey for a cut and color for at least the past five years. Within the last year or two, she bought the salon. There is one in SF and one in Oakland. Before she bought the salon I always saw her on the weekend -- no problem. Katey had mentioned she would only be at the Oakland location one Saturday a month. However, she would definitely schedule me on those Saturdays. Katey and I scheduled my next three appointments since she was only going to be there one Saturday a month. The salon called me two days before the first scheduled appointment to tell me she needed to cancel because "the salon made a mistake and double-booked her." I knew this wasn't true because I had scheduled the appointment with Katey in person. I thought it was weird but gave Katey the benefit of the doubt because we had worked together for so long and I knew she was under a lot of stress. Second scheduled appointment, I get a call (again, two days before) explaining she had to cancel because "she accidentally double booked herself." Double-booked? In this day and age? Hhhheeeellllllooooooooooo? Google calendar. It's free. Come on. Third scheduled appointment, I get a call (yes, you guessed it) two days before the appointment. Explaining, "she forgot it was her birthday." WTF? Am I on a Seinfeld episode? If you haven't been counting, that is three appointments in a row that she scheduled directly with me and then bailed on. If you're going to break up with a client, at least have the decency to have a conversation with them; instead of ghosting them. LAME. read more

I was 100% pleased with my appointment with Hilary. ACTION: After hashing out the game plan and going through reference photos before the haircut began, I felt assured that she understood what I was going for. There was a lot of good back and forth communication, checking in, adjustments, and most importantly: questions before snips! She had great suggestions (given w/o any pressure) that I am happy to have gone along with. She also let me know that I could come in for a free bang trim between cuts. VIBE: Hilary and the rest of the staff were super friendly, easy to chat with, gave me CAFFEINE, and generally led my morning to a lovely start. I've been ricocheting between salons for a few years since my longtime stylist moved. This is the first spot I've walked out of completely satisfied. Speaking of which, during this visit she completely salvaged the zombie leftovers from my (ultimate nightmare) previous cut (yes there is a review.) I would definitely recommend coming here. UH OH: If I had the dough, this would totally be my regular stop. Unfortunately this salon is way out of my budget. I -definitely- do plan on returning and look forward to it, but I can't come as frequently as I would like. I'm only shaking my head at my wallet, not the salon. read more

Hair update y'all!!! Once again Lucca is amazing!! Told them I wanted some bangs, my bleach brought up, and rose gold/pink put in! Didn't disappoint, as usual. The salon has complimentary water and tea which comes in handy when you're sitting in a chair for a few hours :) I still love love love lucca and will never see anyone else for as long as I live!! I had a haircut and color from Sierra this week and she did an amazing job. I usually cut my own hair but this time I took the chance on having a professional do it because I knew exactly what I wanted and it felt too tricky to do myself. I was so scared I'd end up with yet another cookie cutter soccer mom haircut (which is apparently the default setting for my head LOL). Turns out, Sierra listened and asked questions and took her time carefully creating the exact look I asked for. She's got technical skills AND a great eye for style. I couldn't be more pleased with her work. Highly recommend! read more

He walked me through the entire process and meticulously worked on my hair to make sure it was perfect. I love my hair and have received so many compliments on it so far! I rearranged my entire day for this appointment, and they had nothing to offer in the way of apology or appointments except for, " Yeaaa Arianna's not going to see you today." I have gotten my hair done by Rebecca a few times now and she is absolutely the greatest with her skills and one of the most personable human beings I have come to meet! She took me from my dark drab virgin hair to bombshell blonde my very first time I saw her. I have gotten so many compliments everytime I get my hair done. This last time I wanted something fun and she worked her magic. She asked me if I wanted my hair to "scream, sing, or whisper" and I told her I wanted the color to sing and oh man it's beautiful. She is really an artist and has an adorable personality to top it off. I will continue to go to Rebecca forever! UPDATE! Becca made my hair even lovelier. Jinelle is an artist for my hairs. I've been going to her for 6ish years now. She is always receptive to ideas, and happy to customize them to fit you. She has great ideas of her own. I've had some extreme changes with my styles, Jinelle handles them no big deal. She's easy to talk to, and laid back. She can do everything from simple blonde highlights to rainbow unicorn magic. She was in SF Glam for at least 5 years, then came to the east bay where parking is plentiful and the street is a good one for strolling. Salon feels open and bright, staff are all chill. They also have revolving local artists featured on the walls. read more

FInally! I got the haircut/color I've been looking for. Moe is the best! I love my haircut so much that every day I get up and look in the mirror and get a big smile on my face because I wake up with great hair. I've tried many salons over the years, and because of my age, hairstylists give me very matronly haircuts that do not fit my personality nor work with my face, until NOW! Moe listened very carefully, and put a lot of time and attention into the look I wanted to achieve, as well as giving me a "wash and wear" haircut that I asked for. I was really excited to get my hair done because of all the positive reviews. I wanted to get my hair done quickly, but they didn't have any appointments for a month so I decided to wait. I wanted a very simply cut and color, something anyone could do. They asked me to send them pictures of my hair and of my "inspiration" before I came. I have a very busy schedule and planned on doing it when I has time. Rebecca texted me the Saturday before my appointment asking me to send the photos and warning that if she did not hear from me she would have to cancel my appointment. I responded to her and told her I would do it when I had time. I planned on doing it the next day as I was indisposed all that Saturday, however the next morning she informed me that although I got back to her, she still canceled my appointment that I've waited for the entire month. I'm sure she's fine at doing hair, but I was extremely disappointed. I would understand more if I was doing a major change on my hair, but what I want is so simple that I really didn't think the photo was necessary, although I was willing to take the time to do it. I've never left a Yelp review, but this left me with an extremely negative taste in my mouth, I'd suggest trying another place! read more

I went to see Tresca for the first time, and she was fantastic! I went in with a vague idea of what I wanted, and she helped me get a clearer sense and to feel inspired about hairstyles. She's a great listener, great at asking questions, and also answering questions and explaining how hair works. I really appreciated that she seemed focused on what I wanted--a no-hassle haircut that wouldn't need product and could come out from under a bike helmet still looking good. I love my new cut, and it does exactly what I hoped. The space is big and airy, with good ventilation. We were the only ones in there. It felt good in terms of Covid safety. Note: I didn't see her in the online booking system, but I called and made an appointment. She offers early morning times, which I really appreciated. read more

Just left the salon after a great morning appointment with Tresca- she is such a fun and easy person to chat with, and lovingly took my tangled droopy curls and gave them what they wanted/needed! This review is for Eric, he's just simply AMAZING. I followed him from Walnut Creek and will continue to follow him wherever he goes! I have really curly hair so my whole life I've struggled looking for a hair stylist that knows how to give me a great haircut that looks amazing straight & curly. His haircuts are flawless and very precise, he listens to what you want!! I continue to refer everyone to him because of how talented he is, he's fixed bad haircuts and colors for my friends and myself before. I won't let anyone else touch my hair anymore, I only trust him to color or cut my hair. I always leave Eric's chair looking amazing! He's truly a hair genius. As far as the salon goes, it's a super cute and chill the staff is super friendly and nice! They take card & cash. There's only street parking but that's fine with me because it's in the nice part of Oakland and you can just park in the neighborhood. read more

I just had another excellent experience at Glama-Rama! Today Sierra cut my hair, and again, I was comfortable and felt my energy level was met - a consideration not all stylists take into account. I have felt awkward at other salons with over-bright lighting or extreme enthusiasm, especially when it's right off the bat. Sierra is confidant, pleasant, and asked thoughtful questions about how I wanted to clean up my self-given haircut. I was happy to have my hair texture worked with, rather than against as is often the case! I really liked how Sierra styled my hair- my waves were all in the right place and the new length was flattering and more youthful. I was also excited to see how it would straighten out- it looks polished and classic flat ironed! I've been taking a lot of interviews for a new position and my hair had been looking sort of ... undefined and fuzzy, with some weird layering. You are in capable, thoughtful hands with Sierra! I look forward to going back for some highlights later this summer and a trim. I feel confident going to my interview tomorrow that I will look - still like myself- but a sleeker more stylish version. I had a great time getting my hair cut. First, my hair dresser and I had a good talk about what she thought would work well and want I wanted. We ended on a good compromise that ended up looking great. Then, she washed my hair and we talked about our favorite foods. She cut my hair and blow dried it in the bowl dryer. She styled it with mousse and then voila. The price was somewhat on the medium-higher end, but the end result was definitely worth it. Thanks for the great haircut! read more
