Omg I can't stop looking at my pup! He's so cute! I've loved our two experiences at Gloria's and plan on returning. From the beginning, the energy and vibe is so chill. Me, and my pup, can tell when a groomer is stressed, frazzled, and impatient. He tries to turn around and bolt haha. That doesn't happen here! He enjoys coming in and the groomers seem relaxed and happy. They take special care to listen to my requests and are honest about what they can and can't do and why. I moved back to La Jolla with my 7 yr old Maltese, Harry, about 2 months ago and was delighted to find Gloria's! I had a wonderful groomer in MN who groomed my dog since he was a pup. While she did a wonderful cut I was never thrilled with the fact it often took 3-4 hours to get him out of there and he was held in a cage when not being actively groomed. He would be shaking and sooo ready to leave when I picked him up. I heard good things about Gloria's from the staff at Muttropolis as well as several dog owners I've met walking around La Jolla - it's always nice to ask someone else with a small dog who looks great where they were groomed. I've been to Gloria's twice now and each time I've called they've been very friendly and able to accommodate Harry within 2-3 days. Each time I've dropped him off I've been impressed with the calmness in the salon - from the groomers and the other dogs! The place is also spotless and smells great. Best of all, they don't hold your dog in a cage - they have little pens on the ground with shallow dog beds - both times I've picked up Harry he was resting comfortably on a little bed - happy to see me but not chomping at the bit to get out of there. First time he was ready in an hour and a half and second time just under two hours. I've had 2 different groomers, both took the time to ask about and listen to what I was looking for and they made notes for next time. I am a picky dog owner, I like a modified puppy cut with no bangs, keep his body hair about an inch and fullness in the face/tail - so he doesn't have that "I just got groomed look". I have to say that Harry has looked more handsome than ever since being groomed at Gloria's. I've had people stop me to ask where he was groomed! Gloria has been grooming my dog since he was 4 months old, he is now 9. She is the BEST!! She is very gentle and thorough. I love the idea that the animals are not kept in cages but in small pens around her grooming tables. She actually calls her place a "spa" for pets, as you don't hear a bunch of barking. It is as peaceful as it can get for a grooming salon. The salon is small and quaint. She gets my dog in and out of there usually within a couple of hours. On recommendation from my dog's trainer, which made me feel confident, I took my 6-month old cockapoo to Gloria's for her first grooming. She had a few knots and tangles, and generally needed a trim as her hair is quite long. When I dropped her off she was very shy, as this was a new place filled with new people. I brought her in to make her more comfortable, but then they advised me to leave when my dog wasn't looking so she wouldn't know I was gone. I received a call 20 minutes later saying that they couldn't groom my dog because she was trying to bite them when they were brushing her leg, and they were afraid to get bit. That's fair enough, nobody wants to get bit by a dog, even a cute little cockapoo puppy. However it surprises me that with all their tools, harnesses, and experience, THIS dog is the one that is too scary and unruly to groom. Perhaps I'm overestimating the professional nature of a groomer, and in reality my dog turns into evildog when left at a groomer. Or perhaps they just want catatonic dogs, so if you think of your dog as "easy money" for a groomer, take her to Gloria's--they'll stick her neck in the noose and chop away. Either way, there are better groomers out there, a Google printout and a dart board should suffice to find one for you. read more

When I got my dog back it looked like a beginner had cut my dog. His whiskers were cut very short on one side. He had nicks down one side of his back. I called thinking Gloria had a new person, but no Gloria had done the cut herself. I told her the problem and she gave me short response of disbelief. In short it was a very bad experience.
