We had hoped to be able to lift the whole thing a few inches, but had no idea how. Enter Eliot from Applicare. He pondered the situation, consulted a printout of the manufacturer's docs, and discussed with us. The conclusion was that we could probably just eliminate the canopy and retain the key functionality of the hood. 90 minutes of hard work ensued, mostly by him, but ably assisted by my wife and (occasionally) me, and it was done! The charge was entirely reasonable, and we'd be happy to engage him again. And he's a character!

The price was more than I expected: $174 for replacing my vent duct (which I thought was fair) $109 to hook up the washing machine (which I thought was too much simply for hooking up the hot/cold hoses and drain hose -- this service unfortunately did not include setting up the drain pan under the machine, which is the most difficult part) $59 for the service call.
