Views looking down on Oregon's coast from high above God's Thumb.
    Seth A.

God's Thumb is a cool vista point setting offering panoramic overlooks of Oregon's coastline. It can be tricky to find, and is part of a side trek hike off the bigger...Knoll Trail. If you plug God's Thumb into Google Maps, what'll appear under search results is..."The Thumb via The Knoll Trailhead" and yes, this is what you're looking for. I arrived back in early August around 3pm and although there were cars parked on the side streets of the road next to the trailhead, there was still space for me. The trailhead will say...The Knoll...a 2.8 mile roundtrip walk through the forest. And actually, there's zero signs or information about God's Thumb. This had me confused... I just assumed that along the 2.8 miles, I'd stumble upon God's Thumb which is this lush green mound where you stand at the top for awesome sceneries from high above. But actually, the pathway for God's Thumb (while hiking along The Knoll Trail) is unnamed without signage. Let me explain... When entering the tranquil, Knoll Trail forest, you have the option of veering left or right, and ultimately, it doesn't matter because it's a roundtrip trek. I headed off to the righthand side. Now...here's where you'll discover the trail for God's Thumb... Maybe 1.5 miles (around halfway) into the 2.8 mile length of The Knoll, you'll come upon a clearly defined dirt path with an uninviting warning sign saying..."danger, trails are not maintained, use at your own risk, unstable cliffs". This is it! This is now the path for God's Thumb! Don't worry about the warnings...this new trail heading to God's Thumb is easy and safe. I had zero concerns along the way. So now...this God's Thumb will add an extra 1.1 miles each way onto the entire trip. That's 2.2 extra miles and add that to the 2.8 miles of The Knoll Trail and pretty much you're hiking for 5 miles altogether. I'd rate the hike casually moderate, not strenuous whatsoever. After venturing down to the forest floor and back up again, God's Thumb will be straight ahead in clear sight. And...it resembles a giant green thumb. Making your way to the peak can be somewhat scary with some sheer drops, but nothing out of the ordinary or dangerous from my POV. It wasn't windy while hiking so I never felt off balance. Each step was secure. Finally arriving at the pinnacle of it all, the views were pretty special. You get 360 degree perspectives from all angles. The Oregon Coast definitely shines as the prime photo opportunity. The Pacific ocean is gorgeous with waves crashing against the rocks. While standing at the peak, it's worthwhile to hang out and take a brief break. Because God's Thumb is sort of a small area, I was standing beside other hikers. Everyone started taking pictures of each other and sharing stories and where their adventures were taking them. All this while admiring the views. Returning back onto The Knoll Trail you come upon another overlook that's good for pictures. Then you return to the neighborhood and keep to the left for arriving back at the side street of the trailhead. In total, I used 4 hours for hiking the 5 total miles including time at God's Thumb. Btw, it's free to visit and the trail is located a few miles on the outskirts of the town of Lincoln City, Oregon. Overall, it's a fun experience even though the trail is hidden and can be difficult to locate. Lastly, what's good about coming to God's Thumb is that it's a unique destination that fits in well to anyone's itinerary for exploring up and down Oregon's coast.

Great trail...loads to see and a real workout in the process…read more We arrived at the trailhead at 8am to be the first in the lot on a Saturday. By the time we returned the lot was full. There's a decent amount of parking...spots for cars, RVs, and trucks with boat trailers. The pre-trail wanders in and out of the trees and road for a bit, but they have great signage to lead you to the actual head. The trail is great, as you get a smidge of everything you could ask for along the way...some shaded forest, wildlife, wildflowers, stunning coastal views, and a pretty butt-kicking workout to the top viewpoint. Keep in mind, we aren't young, and neither are our hips and knees. There are a good number of high clearance steps to climb that weren't the easiest for a gal with short legs and bad hips. Not to mention that the trail is pretty steep as you zig-zag your way up the non-shaded knoll to the second viewpoint at the top of the lower trail (where it meets the upper). The trail is narrow most of the way, especially on that hillside as you push your way through the tall grasses and flowers. You definitely need to watch your step constantly going up and down, as there are hidden steps, rocks, and uneven surfaces beneath the grasses. We almost ended our trip at the lower viewpoint, but after a bit of contemplation decided to push through and up the hillside to the top. I'm super glad we made the choice, but we definitely felt it! So much to see along the way. We got to watch the elk herd as it grazed the knoll at the first opening, so beautiful. Halfway down the hill from the top a fast moving fog bank came off the coast right at us, engulfing us and removing everything from sight for a minute, while providing us with much appreciated and FABulous cold air... a very cool experience for sure. I highly recommend this trail. Go early if you go on the weekend. And if you're now young ONLY at heart, be prepared for a decent workout if you plan to go to the top...but do it, it's worth it. :)

On the day we went you could see everything you ever wanted to on a hike. The trek up was filled with streams and plants and at the very top a nice clear view of the beaches shorelines which seemed to have stretched on forever. We cant to come back to Oregon simply for this hike alone! Made our trip to the coastline by far the best we have ever gone too! I would highly recommend this hike to any avid hikers not because the difficulty but because the VIEW.

Nothing but sunshine greeted us. No rain, fog or clouds dampened our road trip. The weather this week where we visited: Coos Bay, Florence, Newport, Yachats, Depoe Bay forecasted rain and wind with even a gale warning in some parts. The Oregon Coast is so beautiful! Thor's Well in Yachats at high tide was amazing to see. At low tide we saw some brave folks walk down towards the edge of that gaping hole. In Florence we descended down 208-ft in an elevator to the Sea Lion Caves... we didn't get a chance to see any sea lions at the time but the cave was cool to see. In Newport was where we saw sea lions bask and roll about at the docks just below Clearwater Restaurant and Port Dock One in Historic Bayfront. FREE! No matter the season, the Oregon Coast is a rejuvenating getaway. We enjoyed visiting the coastal cities, admiring lighthouses, making footprints in the sand, dining on the coast, checking out unique souvenir shops, seeing miles and miles of public coastline that continue to be free and public... captivated by the beauty of the mighty Pacific Ocean. Let's go! Review #3262

The fries are always a big hit, wish they had a buffet, we typically come here for the grill or crispy sandwich or halibut sandwich. This particular day my halibut was two small strips! I will come back, I recommend the chicken sandwich. For being a casino I feel that this place can step up their game in the menu. Just my opinion.. Great view on both locations!

Most of my problems are related to the actions and temperament displayed toward me by the reservations staff, Heather the supervisor, and Nick, an employee with 6 years tenure. I found their communications with me to be unfriendly, disrespectful, devious, and not ones that reflect favorably on the massive corporate structure whose rules they of course follow, unflinchingly. I refuse to spend any of my time and/or money with people and companies that treat me like Chinook Winds incorporated, trains, expects and requires their service employees to treat customers. So sayonara, I will never return Heather. I hope your corporate profits will now soar in 2026 since you have charged me a late checkout fee of $25, when I was led to believe otherwise in a conversation I had with Nick at 11:20am, and not notified that I would be charged by a very dour Heather at 12:45 when I was granted admittance to my room for 5 minutes to collect my things. Just duplicitous and deceitful behavior. Ciao for now, and forever!!
