It's hard to decide whether to leave a review as an entertainment space or as a restaurant. As an entertainment space, it's 5 stars, no questions asked. The performers are amazing, the vibe is fantastic, and I genuinely appreciate that they emphasize leaving tips for the kitchen staff who are so often overlooked. It's a ton of fun, so positive, and just an all around blast. I think the kindest way to review Godfrey's as a restaurant, is to compare it to a bowling alley or a stadium. You're not there for the food. Expect for your food to take a loooooooooong time (mine was probably crossing an hour). If you're ordering drinks, order two or three. There are no prices on the menu, and my quesadilla was (around-I can't remember exactly) $28. It was also not good and filled with an indiscernible cheese paste? It was the only vegetarian item on the menu, so maybe it was a "picked the wrong thing" kinda deal, but I noticed that a lot of food did not get finished at my table. My Bloody Mary was sad and my mimosa not much better. With all that being said, you really couldn't pick a better and more fun way to spend your day. It feels like a celebration (and is!) and if you come understanding that you're not going to be doing fine dining, you'll be okay. My advice would be to eat beforehand and to order your drinks in bulk. You'll have a blast. Note-bring cash! The show was so much fun, and the energy of everyone I came in contact with was positive and upbeat. The cocktails kept flowing, but the charges were really quite reasonable. This review pertains exclusively to Godfrey's Drag Brunch (although I have hazy memories of a nighttime visit there as well..). It's Sunday in Richmond...I know bed seems like a really good idea, but get out of bed at least once a season for the fabulousness that is drag brunch. There are 11am shows consistently, but also 2pm shows often. You absolutely must call to make reservations in advance, because it is a small venue and popular for large groups. You'll need to give your name and a credit card to hold the spot. I hear there are consequences for missing party members, but I've yet to have a problem. Give yourself ample time for parking and getting into the waiting room on time (15 minutes early). The ladies: Every Sunday features several performers. This morning's show had 4 ladies. Usually one or two are locals (RVA or VA Beach) while others come from farther South or even from LA. If you go infrequently, you are likely to always see a very new show. I'm amazed at the queens' athleticism at that hour -- gyrating over your brunch food. Wow. High energy. Enjoy cocktails so you can feel as though you might be able to keep up with them. Ranging from campy disco to Rhianna realness, each queen makes three costume changes and will usually do two sets of two songs and then a single song set. Photos are welcome, but videos aren't allowed. Your dollars will get some extra love and attention and a chance for your friend to snap a good photo with you and the performer. Some of the ladies favor lingerie and lots of fully-equipped body exposure. The crowd: I'm always amazed at the variety of patrons during drag brunch. I've never been there without seeing at least one birthday party or bachelorette gathering. Though I've never seen any underage patrons, I have seen many grandmothers! The emcee with be cheeky with you and the girls will give lapdances to your guy friends who are seated along the "runway." The food: My first visit, I wasn't that impressed with the food. However, I just had the crab eggs benedict which was very yummy! All of the dishes come with herbed potatoes and a couple of fruit slices. The fruit platter is quite abundant! If you are a vegetarian, make sure you let them know you don't want bacon on top of your french toast! That came as a surprise, since it wasn't listed on the menu. Also, the food is made to order and takes awhile to arrive. Quite likely, your neighbors will be done eating before you are even served. So, eat a snack beforehand if you are super starving and hungover. Have a bottle of water in your bag so you can hydrate in the waiting room. Alcoholic drinks come out quickly. Water sometimes takes awhile. The cocktails are great! I thoroughly enjoy their bloody marys. The protocol: You can get ones from the servers or from the emcee in the waiting room. Tip liberally -- those girls are working it and you are barely awake! This is not the venue for picky eater requests. The staff were working a few hours before in the same place and do not want to hear you knit-pick. So, get some cocktails in you, relax, and enjoy the show! Use the restroom before the show starts since you can't get up during the performance to work your way back to the bathroom. Oh, and bring a small purse. It's cramped! Godfrey's is definitely one of my favorite brunch places to go. Not only do they have lovely ladies performing Sunday mornings but the food is to DIE for. I've had the Eggs Benedict and the fruit platter on separate occasions and both are wonderful. The eggs are cooked to a perfect over-easy, the English muffin isn't soggy, and the potatoes on the side are cooked so they're nice a soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. I absolutely love that all the brunches come with a side of fresh fruit. The fruit tray is HUGE! They have grapes, blueberries, watermelon, raspberries, blackberries, cantaloupe, and melon on there. It's the best! The bloody Mary's and mimosas are fantastic! There are are about 5 different choices of each and all of them are tasty. The owner is always there and is good at talking to the crowd. He gets us very involved and it works perfectly. The girls that put on a show are full of energy and life and are SUPER nice. You can even take your picture with them after the show. They put on a different show almost every week and it's always super fun to go to. I will absolutely be going back here again and again! Love this place! I'm a little bit of a Godfrey's veteran. I've been a ton of times to the Sunday drag brunch for all different occasions. People regularly go for birthdays, bachlorettes, or just to have a wild time with friends((be careful taking straight guys there as long as they don't mind being embarrassed). It's a great place to take out of town FUN friends which is the reason for my last two visits. The drag queens always put on an awesome show and the MC is always hysterically dirty(might want to leave grandma at home unless she's a wild woman). You will need lots of 1's to tip the dancers but they are very accomodating in exchanging your cash for 1's at the club. The wait staff has always made our visits even more fun and the food is pretty good. I read one review of the Eggs Benedict that said it was plan and had too much Hollandaise however I think it tastes great and love mine with too much hollandaise anyway. I've been here about 6 times for Drag brunch, once for the Sunday night cabaret, and 3 times to the bar. Drag brunch is what I'm reviewing for. The entertainers range from awesome to just plain good, but the last time I went one of the drag queens was Missy Elliot and totally stole the show. The emcee was awesome (see pic with fringe) and the service was phenomenal (see pic of guy on my lap doing a shot with my table). My only complaint was the food. One of the reasons I look forward to Godfreys was the crab eggs benny and is wasn't as good as it usually is. Crab meat was not lump crab but fishy and it had a big oily piece of cheddar on it. I ate it cause I had too with all the drinks I was pounding, but that's the reason for this being 4 star and not 5. Upon arrival, we were ushered into a dark, dusty room with all of the other patrons where the MC goes over the "rules" of the show. We were then seated in their main dining area and our server promptly asked for our food and drink orders. --FOOD-- The food comes out first come first serve so they try to get you to put in your orders quickly (which was still really difficult since we were all indecisive). I got their crab salad which tasted a little too "fishy" and had some shell fragments in it as well. My food was a major miss but everyone else at my table seemed to enjoy their items. They have a good number of brunch cocktails of which I ordered the Poinsettia and Flirtini. They're strong, but easy enough to drink and definitely helped to bring down everyone's inhibitions. --DRAG SHOW-- The show was either really dull or really entertaining. Some of the divas/girls just slowly walked around the room plucking money out of everyone's hands and then took a shot with the MC. I thought that it was just part of their act, but even on their second run, they didn't do any entertaining. However, the other divas were really eccentric and danced around the room, got all over people, and even showed some pasties! So much fun! I came here for brunch on a Sunday with my fiancee and a couple of girlfriends. The drag performances were so entertaining and funny and the performers were so nice! (I went for a bridal shower type thing and the drag queens were very sweet). We all were drag virgins, so had no idea what to expect. By the time the show started, we were all starving, so everyone ate all of their plate and no one complained about the food. Our server was wonderful and nice. I would recommend this place as a definite 'go to' place for people from out of town. I didn't feel like we were in Richmond at all; it felt like a much bigger city. People actually eat here?!?! I went last night for "College Night" and other than a few tables at the front I wouldn't have been able to tell that this was also a restaurant. When I walked in there appeared to be a coat check. No one was there so I just walked passed and got a drink at the bar. Very strong Absolut and tonic. So strong that all of the ice melted before I had the drink in my hand. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but definitely a nice way to start off. I walked over to watch the drag show for a little while before coming back to the bar for a frozen drink. That's when they noticed that I didn't have a wrist band. I didn't know what the guy was talking about, so I went back to the front where I was told that there was a $5 cover and a mandatory coat check. Total = $6. That didn't make me very happy. The rest of the night was uneventful, although I did meet a very cute boy there (gotta love those VCU students). Lots of lesbians, especially in line for the bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom, it's really small. Looking for something to do on a Wednesday night? Well, "College Night" at Godfrey's has always been jam packed and a people watching nirvana. Yes, the crowd is young, but that is half of the fun. Not many of us want to go back to the messy behavior of our youth but it is great to be reminded why.....go here on a Wednesday night and you will see what I mean. The drag queen cast on Wednesday's is led by Tiffany Devereaux who is the energetic show hostess. The cast changes each Wednesday but each performer does two numbers each with an hour of dancing in between. The last show ends around 1230 and dancing is full tilt from then on. There is a large outdoor space behind the bar/club that is primarily used for smoking. The club is basically two store fronts merged together with one side being a bar and the other being a dance floor, DJ booth and bar in the rear. There are a variety of nights that attract different crowds based on the type of music being played or the crowd being catered to. There are nights that are primarily African American and nights that are young (Wednesday) If you haven't been to the famous Drag Brunch, you are missing out on a "must see" while in Richmond. You don't come for the food, you come to drink and throw dollar bills at the queens. Get a reservation or get there early because it fills up fast on Sundays. There are also Drag Dinners on Saturdays. Every second and fourth Thursday of the month is Joanna O and Jessie Split, along with guest DJs focusing on music types such as dubstep, D&B, house, and underground. Not known for fine cuisine but serving Sunday brunch and dinner twice a month, Godfrey's is best seen as a bar/club/cabaret that serves food between very entertaining performances by and ever rotating cast of drag queens. read more

Everyone is very friendly and chatty. Bar tender was tight and threw back a lot of shots with us. She also made us unique concoctions which made getting stuck sitting at the bar a plus. SHOW: Amazing show. Only time I ever experienced drag was at a Broadway play. This was so much fun. You get to take pictures with the "girls" after the show. The girls are so lively, animated and have so much character. They pick great songs and have the most amazing outfits. The HOST of the show though- wow he's another story. He's HILARIOUS. This review is based on two things: the food and Groupon. I would say in general the food wasn't bad except for the fact that my friend had a bottle cap in his sandwhich. He actually took a bite of his ruben and looking worried spits the damn thing into his hand. A bottle cap! Let me reiterate that this was in his mouth and he could have easily choked on it. Went to the drag brunch this morning. Had a really good time. I surprised my best friend with it for her birthday and she said she haid a great time as well. To put this review in perspective, I am a straight 24y/o female. But honestly at Godfreys it does not matter how old or young you are, if you're straight or gay or what your race is. The crowd at Godfreys is a mix of people from all walks of life who came together for the common purpose of having fun! Pros of drag brunch- Entertainers work very hard for their tips and will definitely show you a good time, food tastes pretty good/ good amount of options, they let you take pics during the show, so bring your cameras because they have some pretty hot outfits, and the drinks are reasonably priced and VERY strong Cons/ Things you should be aware of- 1.) They make you get their early and you sit in this dark room for 15-20 minutes waiting for them to give you the house rules which really only took them like two minutes to give, 2.) because everyone must order an entree and because they sit everyone at the same time it can take a while to get your food (they do offer a muffin/bagel basket that you can get immediately if your food is taking a while), 3.) the best seats seem to go to people in larger parties, I was a group of 2 so we were seated near the kitchen, the performers will come down that way for tips, but the majority of their performance was across the room, near the front, so we were craning our necks most of the morning read more

Godfrey's is a must go to place when you have visitors in town. I've come here several times and prepare yourself to drink on Sunday morning if you come here. Despite its small sized venue your packed in like sardines and the noise level is very loud. When the "stars/divas" come out the place is electrified. You've got to shout just to talk to someone seated next to you but hey it's part of the fun. Bring your $singles and tip generously as those ladies are high maintenance if you know what I mean. You'll be knocked if your mommas rocker when the food rolls out. You might think what can that kitchen put out? And put out they do: great eggs, salads etc and the drinks the drinks strong and large. ~DON'T GO HERE~ This past Friday was my first night going to a gay bar in Richmond and I decided to go to Godfrey's because I heard from many people that it's a good place to go. I did enjoy the drag show, but when I tried dancing and having fun I felt like an obvious outsider because of racial demographics. So I left around 12:30am to get in my uber and am suddenly being yelled at by the security guard/bouncer. He grabs my drink out of my hands and POURS IT OUT ALL OVER MY SHOES while he continues to yell at me. I told him I'm not from here- I'm visiting for the weekend and I didn't know the rules. I also recently turned 21 and don't go out much where I'm from. A manager came outside and apologized to me for him being an asshole, but this unnecessary animosity plus feeling like an outsider has resulted in them loosing me as a customer. I am never going here again and will continue to spread bad news about this business to others. read more

It's an exciting new life adventure, so we thought what better way to celebrate one adventure than with another adventure! Godfrey's drag brunch is certainly an adventure. There were a ton of drag brunch virgins in the building yesterday (my party included) and they made sure to point us out and pick on us. The host, Natasha, was fabulous! The ladies who performed were just alright. I've seen better drag queens and I've seen worse. I imagined that they would be doing a lot more than they actually did. One of the girls stole the show (I wish I remembered her name) ! The food was ok. Everybody else's plates looked great, but I was not satisfied with my choice of the french toast panini. It was good and definitely edible, but I expected more. It was a small portion and I was hungry very soon afterward. It was definitely more about the experience than the food. Ignore the onslaught of 1 star reviews. This is a concerted campaign by a group of students unwilling to speak to management regarding their concerns and issues with the bar. Their goal is to spread misinformation and lower our ratings on social media in order to harm our business. We are not transphobic. We are not racist. We have never kicked out anyone for using the wrong bathroom. Our only request is that if the urinals are being used the door must be open. We will remove any one from this bar if they act disrespectful, violent, or on a destructive manner. We are a safe space as we have been for 21 years in this community. read more

Came here with a friend yesterday because we had a Groupon. I'd been wanting to check out this RVA institution forever, and it was too fun! Our server Eric was a pro and super sweet. The dancin' divas were fabulous, of course. And the food was surprisingly good! I thoroughly enjoyed my strong strong strong Spicy Bloody Mary and the delicious shrimp and avocado salad. I'll definitely be adding Godfrey's to my roster of fun weekend brunch spots. Others have already said this but it bears repeating: if you can't take a joke (or colorful language) you will be extremely uncomfortable here.
