It's a beautiful Sunday in RVA to meet for brunch. I made reservations for 2 online and tried calling to confirm but wasn't able to reach anyone. There is a small parking area on the side of the building so be prepared to find off street parking. I arrived and there was a large birthday party of 25 waiting to be seated. I was told upon arrival there was no dining table available but only seats at the bar. I was told that even though I made reservations it wasn't going to be honored due to the large party was about to be seated in the dining table area. Looking for a brunch spot near our hotel in Richmond and found this place... what it lacks in decor (minimal) ...it more than makes up for in food!!! We had an absolutely delicious brunch trying the French toast platter, chicken and waffles and the specialty omelet loaded with shrimp! Everything was cooked perfectly and the bacon was the perfect crunch and the Home fries were tasty. The servers were great as well... strangely they had no milk for their coffee and only had heavy whipping cream so I passed...condiments were sparse (ketchup and syrup) however the dishes are so well prepared they were not needed!!! Found this restaurant on yelp, as I was visiting from out of town. The atmosphere was very nice, we came for brunch and Riviere did not disappoint. There was a DJ with a nice set and the service was great as well; it wasn't overly pack as well. My best-friend got the mimosa flight ($25) and the french toast with two sides ($20); she said it was good. Professionalism is lacking. We booked a birthday brunch reservation at 1pm. We received confirmation emails the day before and the day of. We had some people that drove and others that spent money on Lyft/uber to be responsible. When we get there, the restaurant is closed. Embarrassed and very annoyed, I even attempted to call to make sure I wasn't missing something. No answer. Their website, yelp, social media, and google all say the restaurant is open. So no one could take 2 seconds to let customers know they wouldn't be open? Or update their sites? Why even allow people to book? I came to the Riviere a few years ago when it had some decorum and gave the impression of a restaurant serving delicious and fresh food. My most recent experience was horrible, like I would not be surprised if the health ratings were questioned. My salmon had a weird fishy smell and tasted as if it was bad or had been sitting out and not properly prepared. The shrimp appetizer that I have had before and is advertised as jumbo shrimp were small, popcorn in size, and overly fried. The servers were disengaged and on their phones and one was even eating outside food behind the counter in the bar area, where food was being packaged. The music was extremely loud, and took away from my party and I being able to have a conversation. And to make matters even worst, one of the cooks walked from the back, hair on top of his head, no hair net, pants sagging, hole in gloves, and crocs filthy. You would think as the cook he would have at least had on proper kitchen safety shoes and a hair net. I will not be eating at this establishment again, it's definitely a health concern. read more

Seating is a bit tight otherwise (think Cheesecake Factory table space). Service was pretty quick with the server taking our drink orders and clarified menu items we had questions about. As a first timer, I will not recommend this place. We had reservations and upon early arrival, the place was packed and had to wait about 25 minutes to be seated. After another long wait, ordered a mimosa tower, literally had a bug inside. They replaced it but was rightfully grossed . Another wait to order food, and by the time food arrived appetite was already gone because we waited almost an hour for service. The music was extremely loud, the space was too small for the amount of patrons. It didn't come with any mint, but it tasted pretty good so I didn't mind. FOOD I started with the salmon bites ($15). I've never had fried salmon so I was excited to try these. The bartender recommended the hot honey sauce so I went for it. They did not disappoint ! The salmon was so juicy and the sauce was delicious. They weren't spicy and had the perfect amount of sweetness too. For my entree i tried the lamb chops and waffles ($26). I enjoyed the sweet waffles. They were a little dry, but the flavor was good. The lamb chops were juicy and well seasoned. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy the sauce on them though. I recommend getting it on the side just in case. Visited on a Thursday as soon as they opened at 11am. I love breakfast and was glad they have a breakfast menu worth visiting for. This place has amazing food and great service! The vibrant colors and paintings lined along the walls made for an upbeat atmosphere. I ordered the Waffle flight and the Blackened Salmon and Eggs. The waffles all tasted the same even though they are different colors. I was confused by this, but it didn't matter because they still tasted scrumptious. The eggs in the blackened salmon and eggs tasted like they had cheese in them so if you're lactose intolerant make sure to ask first. My friend had the Salmon bites and Grits along with the Momosa flight. I didn't try her mimosas, but was really interested in how the Grits tasted. She let me try them and this definitely is the dish I am ordering the next time I visit. They have great music playing, but it was a little loud for me to the point I had to watch my friend's lips as she spoke to me because I could not hear her. I asked the server to turn it down some and she was gracious enough to do so. Even if I never eat in again, I'd definitely try carryout. We love a venue that passes the vibe check!! The music was A1 the entire time and we loved it!! I will say it was my husband and toddle and one thing we did not know about this location was they were a hookah bar. We definitely should have done more research before going. The Mac and cheese was okay. It wasn't great and honestly we could have done without them. The fish and grits were not great. I asked if there were bones in the fish and was told there shouldn't be. There were quite a few bones present so that was disappointing but not a deal breaker. The real issue for this dish was everything else. The fish was not seasoned well and it wasn't fried to be crispy so when they sat it on top of the hot grits it was giving soggy...mushy...not textures that balance well at all. The grits were VERY cheesy. So much so that you could get entire bites of cheese with no grits. And it was sweet. Hot take, most people either like their grits sweet or salty. I'm a salty for sure! So that could have contributed to this. I probably wouldn't go back just because I'm a nonsmoker and typically do not enjoy smoking environments HOWEVER God knew what we needed because he brought us to a hookah bar that ended up being smoke free. I want start this review off by saying I've been in the hospitality industry for 10 years as a server, bartender and manager so Im always understanding of service and all of the things that could potentially be out of the control of waitstaff. My experience for brunch was very lackluster. When I arrived there was no one at the door to greet guest and I ended up having to walk up to the bar to let the bartender know that I had a reservation. The space is smaller than expected but all the tables were full and they had a dj playing hip hop & t&b. I was seated at the bar and sat there for about 15 minutes before I was greeted. The choice of alcohol at the bar was VERY bare! During that time the bartender and kitchen staff were having a disagreement behind the bar in front of myself and other patrons. The bartender seemed very annoyed as she seemed busy and was making drinks. As a bartender/manager, I completely understand being in the "weeds" as the only bartender for a busy brunch shift but it is also still very important to greet customers as they sit at your bar and just let them know you will be right with them, providing at the least a menu. For me that goes a long way and at least lets me known that I am seen. Once we were finally given menus, it took the bartender about another 15 minutes to take our orders. I ordered the peach mimosa pitcher, catfish and grits with a house salad and my friend order the salmon Philly which I was very interested to try. Unfortunately, they let us know that they wouldn't be able to make the salmon Philly so my friend opted out for the chicken Philly on the menu. The food came out in waves with my catfish and grits coming out first and the chicken Philly about 10 minutes later. I normally would like all the food for a group to come out at the same time but we had already waited a while so I let it go. The fish was pretty good but the grits were hard and flavorless without the sauce. My friend stayed the chicken Philly was just OK. My salad didn't come out until I was basically done with my meal but I sent it back because it didn't have the toppings that were described on the menu. I don't even know why they would bring it out to a guest if it didn't look as described. We ended up getting hookah as well which was $50. I was ready to go so I asked for the bill which game to $150 at first. I noticed the bartender still had the salmon Philly on the check which was a different price than the chicken. When I let her know, she said that they didn't even have the chicken Philly in the system although it was on the menu and a different price. She end up removing it and changing the price. The service was "okay" but the food was pretty decent, only wish it came out steaming hot!! It arrived luke warm but overall taste was good! the Mac & Cheese was delicousssss!!! Had the Fish and grits entree which had a ton of bones but my other guest enjoyed the shrimp and grits. The mimosas were good & also be aware that they offer hookah. There were infants and kids in the restaurant while people were smoking but that was the parents option. The music was mainly the best part. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! We arrived at 12:55 pm for our 1:00 pm reservation. The waitress was AWFUL! She sat us told us everything they were out of and left. We sat for 15 minutes with no water, drinks, communication at all. There was a table seated after us and she waited on them, went behind the bar made them drinks and took their order. We finally flagged down another waiter and asked him if he could be our waiter AWFUL! It took them 45 minutes to make me salmon and scramble eggs. The salmon was the size of 1 chicken tender. I could not believe they served me that for $20.00. It was more eggs than salmon. I sent it back and they said they were now out of salmon. At 2:00 pm and they were open until 6:00 p,m. I opted not to order anything else that this was my experience for an hour. My husband ordered the grit bowl that comes with catfish and was told they were out of catfish. He and my son ordered the shrimp and grits. The shrimp was piping hot and the grits were luke warm. It was sent back, reordered and it came out the same way. I believe the grits are precooked and on a warmer which explains why they are never hot. We were so unhappy, we left. I never ate which is sad to leave a restaurant without eating. The focus on the food was lost. The esthetics are not good. When you walk in, it is a small tight spot with seating jammed in 1 small room. There is a DJ who plays the music so darn loud you cannot hear the people you are eating with. There was a birthday scene that was supposed to emulate bottle service that looked horrible and forced. The focus should be on the SERVICE!! The female waitress is awful and it seems she would rather be a bartender than waitress. She gave horrible service to the table next to us as well. Our service was so bad the table beside us complained for us because they noticed it. Stop adding automatic tips to the ticket. This is why we get bad service so that's why they do not give good service!!!!!!!!!!! If they have to work for it they will do better! It is UNPROFESSIONAL to run out of food AND to open at 11:00 am and to be out of anything at 1:00 pm. Lazy business! Black businesses want to say people don't patronize them.
